Henrik Juel: -1.Ra2 B=b2 -2.Ra4 b3,c3 -3.Rd4 c4! -4.Rd5 b5 -5.Rd7, 1.cxb7ep#. The black uncaptures are immaterial. (2003-07-10)
mri: I do not understand this solution. What follows after -1. Ra2-a1 b2-b1=B -2.Ra4-a2 b3-b2? (Does "The black uncaptures are immaterial" mean, that this is some kind of a joke problem?) (2006-07-16)
Henrik Juel: The mate should be cxb6ep#, of course. White retracts his rook to d7, while forcing the black pawn to end up on b5, allowing the en passant mate. So after -1. Ra2-a1 b2-b1=B -2.Ra4-a2 b3-b2 follows -3.Rd4-a4 as stated (in abbreviated notation); if Black now continues -3... a4xQRBSPb3 or b4-b3, there are duals; the dual-free continuation is -3... c4xQRBSPb3 -4.Rd5-d4 (preventing the black pawn from retracting to d5) b5xQRBSPc4 -5.Rd7-d5 and 1.cxb6ep#. No matter what Black chooses to uncapture (if anything), White can continue as stated; in this sense the uncaptures are immaterial, i.e. unimportant. It is not a joke problem. (2006-07-17)
mri: After -1. Ra2-a1 b2-b1=B -2.Ra4-a2 b3-b2 -3.Rd4-a4 black plays 3. ... c4xb3e.p.!!, forcing white to retract 4.b2-b4, followed by Pd5xPd4, and white cannot reach his goal. (2006-07-17)
Henrik Juel: I think you are right, Manfred, so my solution is wrong. What is the intended solution? Or is the problem cooked? (2006-07-19)
gw: The FIDE Album states the same solution as given by Henrik, so I assume the problem is cooked. (2006-07-20)
mri (=[m]ario [ri]chter): According to information I got from W.Keym, the black response 3. ... c4xb3e.p. was already known at the time the solution of this problem was discussed in "Die Schwalbe". K.Fabel, at that time responsible for the retro-section, wrote: [quote]"Zu dieser interessanten Aufgabe wirft W. Henrik Juel: something is wrong here: the claimed mates are not even checks
also, the stipulation should probably be something like
Black and White retract, then #1 (2021-04-30)
A.Buchanan: Yes the problem was the word "dann" which indicates help retractor. The retro is just justification for the forward moves, showing that the relevant fairy piece existed earlier in the game so can be promoted to. What's the name of that principle? (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the clarification, Andrew
I think that this principle should remain unnamed and just stay in the joke realm (2021-05-01)
A.Buchanan: Sorry not to be clear: I am talking about the standard fairy principle that if you want to promote to a Princess, there should be one on the problem diagram. Not talking about the joke extension which riffs off this. I thought this was called "Bartel Theme", but it turns out that is something different. (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: I see; that principle probably was established soon after the invention of grasshoppers and nightriders
I do not think it has a name, but it is so well established that it should be in the Codex (2021-05-01)

Bedrich Formanek argues that it was meant as a kind of absurd joke.
hans: 1. exd6e.p.+ Kf8 2. De5 ~~ 3. De8#
If blacks last move was d7-d5 than Lc8 is promoted pawn and sLc8 is captured on the spot. So white has 5 captures left, but I count 6. (axbxc=L, exd, fxe, hxgxf) ?????
Castling is not important, for after key King is in check, so cannot castling. (2013-01-29)
Henrik Juel: As Hans argues, last move was not d7-d5; if it was c6xd5 or e6xd5, it seems possible to preserve the castling right, and there is no #3.
What gives, Mario? (2013-01-29)
Mario Richter: I do not have access to the original source, so I can only confirm that Hans' and Henrik's analysis is correct (d7-d5 is illegal, c6xd5 preserves Black's castling right, so no #3).
Formanek is well known for his joke problems, perhaps some wired logic has to be applied?! (2013-02-01)
Ladislav Packa: I asked about this problem Bedrich Formanek and he replied that it was meant as a kind of absurd joke. Details would probably be best to explain himself. (2013-02-01)

Pam-Krabbé-Rochade (nach Max Pam und Tim Krabbé)
Andy Soltis in 'Chess Life' in einem Artikel "The Antiproblem or What to Do When the Club Problemist Asks, 'Have You Seen This One?'":
"[this problem] I picked up from Ed Formanek when we were teammates at the 1968 Students' Olympiade in Ybbs, Austria. White is called on to mate in two moves; the average problemist will quickly conclude that it involves castling. So far, so good.
But after a few minutes of tortured though he will complain to you that the solution is impossible. Black has one or two retreat squares no matter what White plays. At this point the enterprising antiproblemist assures his friend that the solution is quite real and within the rulebook, and is willing to bet on it. (Don't do it-see footnote.-Ed.) After a few minutes more, the other side is hooked, the bet is made, and you reel off the solution: 1 P-K8= R!, K any, and now comes the move that can only be described as 2. O-O-O-O-O!! mate."
(in der Fußnote wird darauf verwiesen, daß die offiziellen Regeln die Bewegung des K entlang einer Reihe verlangen.)
