For 4) probably a name with those six letters A-C-D-I-L-U (2012-2-22)

Alain Brobecker: Dedication was given with pieces symbols. This eases things a lot! (2012-2-22)
Brassaud: Wem ist das problem gewidmet ? My ‘april fool ‘solution.
Probably a name with those six letters : KPQNNPBR … for King, Pawn, Queen etc … Which suggests: ACDILU and so Michel CAILLAUD. But this is a code, and there is no reason to say that it is not the coding of other letters.Chess problem Data Base Server contains several ' retro ' problem authors whose names contain 6 different letters.
When classifying by number of published problems, we can find : M. Caillaud, L. Ceriani, T. Dawson, W. Dittmann, T. Steudel, A. Kisljak, A. Buchanan, G. Donati, T. Kardos, N. Dupont, W. Frangen, D. Baibikow, E. Bartel, P. Kniest, M. Richter etc. .. (and even, but very far behind : F. Brassaud)- So everyone has to make a choice. (2017-12-9)
Henrik Juel: Curious that so many well-known composers happen to have exactly six different letters in their last names (2017-12-9)
Olaf Jenkner: Footballers have eleven different letters in their last names. (2017-12-9)

Färbe die Steine! Welches war der letzte Zug?
Henrik Juel: White: Kg8, Qh8, Bf8,g3, Pa2,a6,b3,c2,d2,f2,h7 (11+11). -1.B=g7:S. (2003-11-20)
Brassaud: The solution proposed by Henrik does not seem appropriate. White: Kg8, Qh8, Bf8,g3, Pa2,a6,b3,c2,d2,f2,h7. So : Queen g8 and one of the two bishops are promotions, and seven pawns ?
Whatever the color of the pieces : on the diagram there are eleven pawns, at least three queens promotion and two bishops promotion (four bishops on black fields). Total sixteen pawns (or equivalents after promotion). So there is the necessary presence of the two originals queens.
The queen in g8 is a white promotion (last move g7xh8 = D +)
If the king f6 is black: the queens d6 d8 f4 and h6 are black. The white queen from e1 is absent.
If the king f6 is white: the queens d6 d8 f4 and h6 are white. This is the black queen from e8 who is absent.
Could this be a diagram error (2017-12-13)
Brassaud: erratum : queen in h8 (2017-12-13)
Mario Richter: Henrik's solution is absolutely legal - wQh8 is the original wQueen and last move was: g7xSf8=L+. (2017-12-13)
Brassaud: Sorry I had not understood the last move B=g7:S, it's easier with g7xSf8=L+. Thank you Mario. (2017-12-13)
Henrik Juel: In my uninformed youth I wrote in English, also for the men (S=knight), with very abbreviated notation in retroplay
-1.B=g7:S reads 'bishop unpromotes (=) to g7, uncapturing (:) a knight' (this is sufficient, as there is no bishop on h8)
Nobody else thought this was a good idea, and now I use KDTLSP for the men and full notation for uncaptures, e.g., -1.g7xSf8=L
Sorry about the confusion, Francois (2017-12-13)
Henrik Juel: For this enjoyable problem I should also have written the pawn play, like
White: e2xd3x..xa6, g7xSf8=L
Black: c3xb2, dxe, fxe, e1=D three times, gxh, hxg, g1=L (2017-12-13)

Renny Bosch: Aside from that sensational 1 5/8 full circle Knight tour, this composition has some additional challenges. One never really knows one has seen all of a composition's beauty until one has actually produced a proof game. In this case a pawn analysis shows that white Pawns h and g have captured on g and f, exd, dxc, cxb6, bxc3, and a has promoted, black Pawn a has captured on b, and h has promoted. The question is, what happened to the piece that the black h Pawn promoted to? It cannot be one of the pieces still on the board, so it must have been one of the white Pawn capturees, but which one? The only way to unlock the central cluster is to uncapture a white Knight on b5, then walk the bK to b5 and the wQ to d4, after which the wPd6 can uncapture from e5.

Here is a PG (as pretty as I could make it) that shows the whole thing: 1. a4 b5 2. c4 c6 3. c5 Qb6 4. cxb6 c5 5. Ra3 c4 6. Re3 c3 7. Re6 c2 8. e4 Na6 9. e5 Nc5 10. a5 Na4 11. h4 Nc3 12. bxc3 Bb7 13. Henrik Juel: In part a) Black has captured [Lf1] on f1 and [Lc1] on a dark square, so last move was neither c6xd5 nor g6xf5
Nor was last move d7-d5, because this would entail that Le4 were [Pa7] promoted on b1; this promotion is feasible with a3xLb2, but then the promoted bishop could not reach e4
So last move was f7-f5, allowing 1.gxf6ep#

Forderungs-Alternative: Einfarben-Schach. Auf dem Brett steht ein unsichtbarer Läufer. Steht er auf einem schwarzen oder einem weißen Feld?
Yoav Ben-Zvi: In the book (page 26) the WB is placed between e3 and e4. It seems simpler to represent this with WB on e4, the stipulation "Monochrome chess. Is the position legal?" and a Twin b) WBe4 to e3. Proof of illegality with WB on e4: There is no piece that could perform the last capture on a dark square since no piece on the board is capable of a dark-squared capture and it could not be a piece that is missing since such a piece would itself have been captured later on a dark square. Smullyan's version uses poetic language including the metaphor of a Bear and a Lion fighting until each has entirely devoured the other. Essentially the argument uses the well-known mathemtical technique of "Infinite descent" leading to "Reductio ad Absurdum": It can be shown that assuming the existence of a "minimal" instance that has some property (such as most recent capture on a dark square) leads to the conclusion that it is not really minimal (there is a more recent capture on a dark square) so the assumption leads to self contradiction and is therefore not true. A formal definition of this method was developed by Fermat (17th Century) but it was used as far back as Euclid's "Elements" (300 B.C.). (2017-12-14)
Henrik Juel: It might be simpler to consider the retroplay:
With Le4 there is no way of producing a dark-squared man by uncapture (2017-12-14)
Brassaud: With Le4 it seems possible to producing a dark-squared man with the retroplay : 1) Lc2-e4, Kd7-e8 2) Ld3xPc2, b3xPc2 3) Ld3-e4, a4xb3 ep 4) b2-b4... But the position remains illegal as shown with the metaphor of the lion and the bear. (2017-12-15)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Francois
But the en passant trick still cannot create a full retroplay back to the initial position with 32 men
I should have written 'officer' instead of 'man' (2017-12-15)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: Henrik's modified claim that "with WBe4 there is no way of producing a dark-squared officer by uncapture" is correct but I do not see a simple way to prove it directly. A "lion and bear" type argument with retroplay could ask "Which of the pieces that move on the dark squares was the first to uncapture?". It should be noted that this piece could not be a pawn that was itself uncaptured e.p. (since the history of such a pawn does not include an uncapture) and that proving that such a piece does not exist proves illegality (since it implies that dark-squared officers such as BQd8 could not be uncaptured). A similar clarification is needed when applying the argument to forward moves.
The Homebase position of the diagram is an IC. It could be presented (optionally adding a WB on f1 and/or a BB on c8) with the stipulation "Is the position legal?" and the Twin b)-WPf2. (2017-12-17)

Henrik Juel: The dark-squared bishops were captured by officers, so the pawn captures were c7xSb6, d7xLc6 by Black and exLf, f2xSg3 by White (when the pawn has been added)
The forward sequence was e2-e3 (or e2-e4) before d7xLc6 before exLf on a light square, so [Pe2] could not reach f4, and the undetermined capture was e4xLf5.
This simple idea was later shown more elegantly in P1012384.

Henrik Juel: Kevin Begley told me of cooks found by Cloe:
In the set play as well as in the solution either white rook can deliver the mate on e1.
Why did Popeye 3.52 not see this?
(Popeye 4.55 analyses the problem correctly). (2010-8-24)
Mario Richter: Interestingly, my version of popeye (3.52 for Windows, pywin32.exe, file date 19.05.1998, file size 267264 Bytes) correctly sees the duals both in the set play as well as in the solution. (2010-8-24)
Frank Müller: Ergo Mattdual = cooked (2010-8-24)
VL: Cooked? When Bl has the move, only one castling is legal. Therefore presently (since 2009), due to Art.16 (3) of the Codex, this diagram, as is, represents a retro-problem (PRA) with NO SOLUTION if O-O-O is illegal. The genre and the soundness (!?) can be recovered by an additional technical wP. (2017-11-26)

VL: Only one w castling is legal. Therefore presently (since 2009), due to Art.16 (3) of the Codex, this diagram, as is, represents a retro-problem (PRA) with NO SOLUTION if O-O-O is illegal. The genre and the soundness can be recovered by a shift of wPa2. (2017-11-26)
VL: Continuation. In reality, the second part of Art.16(3) formally preserves the soundness of problems like this one (without any changes in their positions): namely, in the framework of Retro-Strategy (RS), which justifies the choice of appropriate castling as a part of the solution! However, such a subtle retro-enrichment lies, apparently, beyond the original intention. (2017-12-1)

A.Buchanan: Earlier comments are misguided - it would be merciful Gerd if you could hide them. (1) I am pretty sure there is a typo, and Sc4 should be on c5. (2) The stipulation should be h#2.5 2 solutions. (3) This works fine as a PRA problem with two parts. (2010-3-2)
Thomas Volet: The position as given is the position in the Ceriani book. The following inscription also appears in that source: "Arrocco Camaleonte". (2010-3-7)
Kenneth Solja: 1. ... 0-0-0 2. De3 Te1 3. Se7 c8=T(D)#. Something in this cook isn't right. Blacks move Se7 isn't possible from the diagram and if queen goes to e7 then it is author's intended solution, not a cook. (2010-3-8)
Henrik Juel: Here is an attempt at analysis.
White captured [Lc8] on c8 and axb8=L; Black captured [Lc1] on c1 and a7xb6, c7xd6, e7xf6, and h3xLg2, and promoted on g1.
Trying to preserve both castlings fails:
Unpromote on g1, retract h2-h4, h3xLg2, and g2-g3; then Lh2 (now on g1, say) can exit, and [Th1] can reach h1 via f3 when it has been uncaptured. But retracting Lh2 to g8 is not sufficient, we must also get La7 out of the way. If Ke1, Pf4, and Th8 are not retracted, the only path available to La7 and Lh2 is a7-b8-c7-d8-e7-f8-h6-g5-h4-f2-g1, so sidetracking is impossible, and the two bishops cannot pass each other.
Giving up one of the castlings allows a relatively easy release.
Something like this was probably the intention, and I think Ceriani would write the stipulation as h#2.5 if this had been in use in 1949. He would consider the problem to have one solution (for each part of the history).
The 1... Tc1 cook is a minor issue. It is probably due to a typo in the Ceriani book; if not, it is easily fixed. (2010-3-12)
Gerd Wilts: The cook was fixed by Ceriani in 1961 by moving sSc4 to c5. (2016-2-18)
Henrik Juel: Stipulation should be h#2.5
The point of retro-analytical interest is that the castlings are mutually exclusive; there is a solution for each part of the game history, so you should write
If Black may castle: 1... Sg5 2.0-0 c8=D 3.Kh8 Dxf8#
If White may castle: 1... 0-0-0 2.Dxe3 Te1 3.De7 c8=DT# (2017-12-4)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: To clarify Henrik's analysis: If White castling is to be preserved then [WRh1] cannot be retracted home across WKe1. It also could not be uncaptured on g2 (The only Black capture on a light square must be of [WBf1]) or be retracted via h3 across g3 (WPg3 cannot retract to g2 before unpromoted BP uncaptures on g2 which implies previous retraction of WPh4 to h2 obstructing the path of WR from h1 to h3). This means [WRh1] retracts home via f3,f1 implying that the cross-over between the dark squared bishops cannot be effected by retracting WPf3-f4. Also the bishop's could not cross with WB on e1 (requires WK vacating e1) so the crossing of the bishops requires BB to stand on h8 which requires BR to vacate h8. For a modern example of a bishop corridor preventing castling see Caillaud's P1080604. (2017-12-5)

VL: Only one castling is legal. Therefore presently (since 2009), due to Art.16 (3) of the Codex, this diagram, as is, represents a retro-problem (PRA) with NO SOLUTION in both twins if the opposite castling is legal.

Henrik Juel: Tb1 is promoted, e.g., d5xPc4xd3epxDc2xSb1=T
[Lf1] was captured on f1, probably by the promoted T
Pb3 captured twice, e.g., b5xPa4xb3ep
These observations give few clues about the last capture on a dark square; this capture must have been made by Kh8, but it is hard to believe that it is unique
Did I miss something, Francois?
What was the intention? (2017-11-22)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Black's last move was a4xb3ep or c4xb3ep, therefore the last move at dark squares was b2-b4. (2017-11-23)
Henrik Juel: I misunderstood the stipulation to mean a capture, but still there are several possibilities
Last move could be Kg7-h8 (on dark squares)
If last move was Th1-d1, the preceeding move could be Td1-b1, and the black ep capture could have happened a long time ago
But if we add the condition that White has the move, then you are probably right, Alfred (2017-11-23)
Brassaud: I do not remember exactly … it was 19 years ago. The stipulation must be added that move is white. The black rook on b1 is promoted. This, combined with the pawn on b3, requires 6 captures on white squares. But there are only four white-squared pieces missing (except bishop f1)! Two black-squared pawns were captured en-passant. So black's last move couldn't have been a2xKb1=R. The only possible last move by black could've been a4xb3 ep, or c4xb3 ep. So the last move on black squares was b2-b4. The intention was to show a move played by a piece absent from the chessboard (2017-11-23)

Anti-Andernach und Chamäleon, da muß man schon um vier Ecken denken! meint WW;

VL: Only one castling is legal. Therefore, due to Art.16 (3) of the Codex, this diagram, as is, represents a sound retro-problem (PRA) with one solution consisting of two partial ones. Cf. P0527781. (2017-11-26)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: The missing BP is either [BPc7] or [BPg7]. It could not capture or promote so it was captured by WP on its home file which can only be by WPfxBPg. The other missing Black piece, [BBf8] was captured by [WPa2] on b4 so White cannot retract WPb3-b4 and is therefore in Retro-Stalemate that must be relieved by the first Black retraction, only possible by -1...BPf7-f5 -2.Pf6xPg7 Kf5-f4 -3.Qh4-h5. This is a version of P0002133 but it does not appear in the 1915 book. (2017-11-26)
