S0001372 | Attack number
Each number is a piece, and the number indicates how many squares are under "attack" by the piece, in the following sense:
1. An empty square can be attacked by pieces of both colors.
2. A non-empty square, or a piece, can only be attacked by the opponent. Pieces of the same color don't attack each other.
3. Pawns attack diagonally.
4. Pinned pieces are still considered attacking.
S0000356 | A nach B | A to B | A au B |
| Find a move sequence of specified or shortest length from diagram A to diagram B. This is a generalization of the notion of a unique proof game (in which the Game Array is diagram A).
S0000657 | Beweispartie mit Serienhilfmatt | Proof Game as Series Helpmate | Partie Justificative style ser-h#n |
This hybrid form is a Proof Game with the flavour of a Series Helpmate. One side makes n moves from the starting array, then the other mates in 1. Considered as a "mostly 1-sided" proof game, the sequence leading to the final position must be unique. Such a composition cannot be sound if considered directly as a ser-h#n - there are numerous sequences of 6 White moves which allow 6... Qh4#. The first examples of the form were composed by Richard Stanley in 2002 (http://one.pairlist.net/pipermail/retros/2002-November/000406.html), but then independently re-discovered in the France-Echecs problems forum in 2007. The goal was to find, for each unit from one side, the shortest Unique Proof Game in which that piece moves to make the mate (whether the mate is discovered, direct or even double). Ties are broken by minimizing the number & power of units captured. Ties within that are regarded as ex-aequo. Francois Labelle, and his mighty computers, also got engaged with the process at a later stage, finding all solutions up to 12 moves. The forces of humanity survived his robot onslaught well: but he did improve 2 cases, and claimed ex-aequo in 2 others. Solutions with more than 12 moves might still be capable of improvement. The two castling cases are still open. Ref: "Parties Justificatives de Serie Permettant un Mat Par L'Autre Camp" Phenix 202-203, pp 8445-8447 & 8471-8472.
S0001060 | Direkt-Reflex | Direct-Reflex | Direct-Reflex |
(Jean Zeller, feenschach-47, 07-09/1979, S.136) | A DIRECT REFLEX mate is an ordinary mate problem with the following additional condition:
Normal DIRECT REFLEX (dr#n): Whoever can play a move to help the opponent mate in 1, must do so - unless he himself can mate in 1.
White (Black) DIRECT REFLEX (W/dr#n, S/dr#n): If White (Black) can play a move to help the opponent mate in 1, he must do so - even if he himself can mate in 1.
DIRECT REFLEX stalemates, and series move problems, are defined analogously.
(Jean Zeller, feenschach-47, 07-09/1979, S.136)
S0000127 | Doppelmatt | Doppelmatt | Doppelmatt |
("feenschach" 56, Okt. 1981, S.202 ff.)
verwandt: Gegenmatt, Beidmatt
S0000011 | Eindeutige Beweispartie | Unique Proof Game | Partie justificative exacte |
(1) [Kürzestes] Beweisspiel (PG) in x.y
(2) Proof Game (PG) in genau x.y

| A composition where the solver is invited to find the complete sequence of moves from the start of the game leading to the diagram. The solution is unique subject to the stipulation, which will generally be one of three types:
(1) [Shortest] Proof Game (PG) in x.y
(2) Proof Game (PG) in exactly x.y
(3) Shortest Proof Game (SPG) (with no number of moves specified)

"PG in x.y" is usually taken to assert that no shorter solution exists (unique or not), although "SPG in x.y" might be more logical.

Where a shorter route to the diagram is known to exist, the stipulation "PG in exactly x.y" is used. This is somewhat deprecated. The stark stipulation "SPG" is not used commonly for unique proof games these days. Unless there is a real surprise, the sense now is that by indicating the number of moves one gives a fair clue to the solver and gives a hint of the level of difficulty.

The terms "SPGs" and "PGs" also flourish as synonyms for the whole sub-genre! The term unique, although used here in PDB, is not used widely, and does not appear in a stipulation any more than would "unique mate in 2".

If there are a declared small number of solutions or variants, then this is shown by adding a numerical parameter: 2, 3, etc. If a larger number of solutions exists, or if the problem aim is to count the number of solutions, then the problem is classified in PDB as a Non-Unique Proof Game instead.

All the units in the diagram appear White. It is the solver's job to determine the correct "coloring" or "colouring" (Black or White) for each unit.
S0000873 | Einziger Zug? | Unique move? | Coup unique? |
Retro-Aufgabe:
| Retro task:
(1) Each side may have the move.
(2) If White has the move, White has only one legal move.
(3) If Black has the move, Black has no legal moves.
There is no requirement in this task that the unique move be mating or checking.
| Ending move? | Coup final? |
Type A/C position where the *next* move is forced and ends the game (by mate or pat).
| Pieces must be removed, so that the diagram becomes legal or a goal (e.g. #2) becomes achievable. In particular, "striptease" is where pieces are repeatedly removed in many successive twins.

In some joke problems, pieces must be removed without an explicit indication in the stipulation, in order to legalize the position.
S0000100 | Ergänze Steine | Add pieces | Ajouter Pièces |
A specified or unspecified number of pieces must be added, so that the diagram becomes legal or a goal (e.g. #2) becomes achievable.

Sometimes the placement of the pieces can be determined independently of the goal. The #2 or whatever then a sort of secondary problem.

It would be incorrect generally to read such a problem as meaning e.g. "Add pieces so that #2 is without cooks."

An Illegal Cluster is another, very specific type of problem where pieces are added to the board. Those problems are generally not given the keyword "Add Pieces".
S0000122 | Erster Zug? | First Move? | Premier coup? |

| A stipulation of this form asks for the first move in the game of a specified unit, e.g. "First move of White bishop on d6?" or in some cases (necessarily so when the unit has been captured) indicated as the start square, e.g. "First move of White bishop from c1?" If the piece never moved, then that is the answer.

For a piece turns out to have been promoted, the question is asking about the first move, if any, following the promotion. The reference may be to the promotion square, again necessarily so if the unit was later captured.

In orthodox chess with no other constraints, it is not possible to determine the first move of an original knight. Movement of a rook is also tricky, but under the Passenger Rook interpretation, we remember that castling is a king move, and a castled rook may be considered not to have moved.

| (short 'F') A pin when used as stipulation is only reached if it is absolute and effective.
Test
1) Would the pinned side be in check if the pinned unit is removed?
2) Is the pinned unit unable to move?
3) Is the pinned unit able to move if the pinning unit is removed?
Only if all 3 questions are answered with yes the goal is achieved.
S0000444 | Forsberg-Zwilling | Forsberg Twins | Jumeaux Forsberg |
| Twinning by replacing all pieces of a certain color by a different piece of the same color on the same squares.
S0000299 | Fortsetzungsproblem | Twinning by continuation | Fortsetzungsproblem |
Mehrlingsbildung mittels Stellungsänderung durch den Schlüsselzug | The initial diagram for one twin is part way through the solution of an earlier twin.
S0000642 | Grazer Hilfsmatt | Grazer Helpmate | Grazer Mat Aide |
| Grazer h# is mutual helpmate. In a reciprocal help stipulation (sometimes written hr#n or hr= n), Blacks, after the (n-1)th move of the solution, can mate/stalemate the white king in one move, or play the first move of an h#1.0 or h=1.0 (with mate/pat to the Black King following) | Grazer h# est aide reciproque.
S0000705 | Grazer Hilfspatt | Grazer Hilfspatt | Grazer Hilfspatt |
(Reziprokes Hilfspatt) Zwei Bedingungen müssen gleichzeitig erfüllt sein:
1. Es ein normales Hilfspatt,
S0001214 | Grazer Selbstmatt | Grazer Selbstmatt | Grazer Selbstmatt |
S0000680 | Help Dead Position | Help Dead Position | Help Dead Position |
Vgl. Keyword "Dead Positon" | In a Help Dead Position problem (h=DP). White & Black co-operate so that White plays a final move that puts the game into a dead position, hence terminating it.

See keyword "Dead Position".
S0000105 | Hilfsrückzüger | Help retractor | Rétracteur aidé |
Before 1923, when Høeg published his first 'retromate', Retractor was well defined: some retroplay followed by an ordinary forward stipulation; in the retroplay all legal retractions were allowed, but in a correct Retractor only one retroplay would enable the forward stipulation, which could be #n, s#n, or h#n with n specified.
These are all termed "Help Retractors" not because the forward stipulation is helpmate in 1, but because the two camps help each other in the retroplay. This risks being confusing if in a problem the retroplay is just one white retraction and the forward stipulation is #2!
By contrast, in a Defensive Retractor (e.g., type Høeg, Proca, or more recently Klan) the camps fight against each other in the retroplay.
S0000070 | Illegal Cluster | Illegal cluster | Illegal Cluster |
| An illegal diagram, that becomes legal as soon as any unit (other than a king) is removed.
| Many retro chess problems are about state: castling rights, en passant status & who has the move. Wherever possible the solver should be able to reason about the diagram and answer any necessary questions about state that are not addressed in the stipulation. Conventions determine state in cases where ambiguity still remains. At some points in some problems during the course of the solution, we deliberately forget about state. We call these cases of amnesia. Most of these involve castling and en passant state only: the problems normally keep rigorous track of who has the move, even if this does not alternate in the regular way.

The most common example of amnesia is consequent series movers. Here, after every move with the *same* player ready to play again, we have no idea about the history of the position, except knowing that it must be legal. Amnesia does not occur prior to the final move in consequent series helpmate or selfmate. We don't use the amnesia keyword for consequent series movers.

There are three types of amnesia:
- acute
- chronic
- complete

acute:
The so-called "Quantum Logic" problems of Frolkin et al. are examples of acute amnesia. After a move or two, the position is deliberately plunged into waking amnesia again, by restarting the composition, in a new phase. We forget about the history of the position, and the state, and as a result have to reapply the conventions once to tell us what is legal.

chronic:
This occurs when the player to move is not alternating in a regular way. We forget state after every move with the *same* player ready to play again.

complete:
After every move we lose track of state, whether or not there is a change as to the player. A composition may still have the players correctly alternating in move. There is still the requirement that each position be legal.

The composer has succeeded in constructing a certain effect, perhaps static or at the end of a proof game.
S0000388 | Kriegspiel | Kriegspiel | Kriegspiel |
A popular variant of chess in which each player only sees their own pieces. Only a referee has a board showing the true position. If a player attempts an invalid move, they will be told, and can try another move instead thereby having gained valuable information. There are compositions based on this version. It is arguable whether this is a fairy condition, however, since all successful kriegspiel moves are legal in regular chess.
In the domain of Proof Games, Kriegspiel is just a stipulation meaning that the diagram only shows the pieces of one colour, and the location of all others must be deduced retro-analytically.

Solvers are given a game score, written in PGNep format, but all the characters are concealed by "*" symbols, so that only the length of the representation of each move is known to the solvers. The task is to reconstruct the game.
"PGNep" stands for "PGN spec" + "ep", which means that everything in this format is the same as described in the PGN spec document, with only one exception being that "ep" is used to denote en passant move. For example, "cxd6ep".
Summary of this format:
1. "+" for check moves, "#" for checkmates, "=" for promotion. [Keyword is placeholder until someone finds appropriate German term.] | Many mathematical chess problems lead to questions of the form "in how many ways can one get from position X to position Y in n moves?" Normally, either X is the Game Array, or Y must be deduced by the solver.

A common convention is that solutions differ only in the *order* in which a fixed set of moves is applied. Is normally combined with "Colouring problem", but in principle one might carve pieces that are already coloured (ebony & pine?). | After one Black help move, White can force a direct mate in n moves.
| One side remains stationary while the stipulated number of moves is made by the other side. In a series-helpmate Black plays n moves to reach a position where White can mate in one, avoiding checks until the final move of the sequence. In a series-selfmate White plays n moves to reach a position where Black is forced to mate in one, checks again being avoided until the last move. In a series-directmate, only White moves. There are two forms of series proof game, in both of which only White moves. In one form the Black pieces are present to be captured, and checks avoided until the final move. and the other where the Black pieces are absent yet play proceeds.

(Die Schwalbe, Märchenschachlexikon, und nach Joseph Persival Ford, Jugendschach 51, 10/1985, S.152-156) | The aim in n moves is to reach a position that is either axisymmetric in the Euclidean-Geometric sense (with respect to one of the four symmetry axes of the board) or point-symmetric (with respect to the board center), regardless of the type and colour of the pieces.

A composition where the solver is invited to find a shortest sequence of moves from the start of the game leading to the diagram.
(KLaus Wenda und Andreas Thoma 2015) | White determines the uncaptures both for their own unmoves (as type Proca) and for the black unmoves (like type Hoeg). An exclusion of the forward defense must be stated explicitly.
S0000032 | Verteidigungsrückzüger, Typ Proca | Defensive Retractor, Type Proca | Rétracteur défensif, Type Proca |
In a Defensive Retractor, you retract both white and black moves. Black is defending by trying to retract the moves that will forbid (or delay) the achievement of White's goal.

The paradigm example of a defensive retractor is the Proca retractor stipulation, named after Zeno Proca (1906-1936).

A Proca retractor in 5 (say) asks for White to retract 5 moves and then mate in 1 with a forward move. After every White retraction (but the last) Black retracts what he wants, trying to defend against the forward mate. White retractions must end in a forward mate against any retractive defense by Black. As in direct problems, White is allowed to mate forward in 1 at any time (after a retraction) and this may happen if Black picks a poor defense. Also, Black may defend by mating White through a forward move if such an opportunity exists after one of his retractions.
