Es ergibt sich aus der Position des Diagrammes, daß Schwarz die Rochade begonnen und sie zur Hälfte ausgeführt haben muß. Auf Verlangen des Weißen ist dann nach den 4 vorbereitenden Zügen 1. e4 h5 2. Lc4 h4 3. Df3 g6 4. Lxf6 a6 die Rochade vollendet worden, d.h. der Turm h8 ist nach f8 herübergesprungen, worauf dann die obige Lösung folgt.

(Angelehnt an eine alte Erzählung über den heiligen Bernhard von Clairvaux (geb.1091, gest.1153), der mit einem Würfelspieler um dessen Seele spielte) Wir knüpfen an diese Erzählungen an und lassen St. Bernhard mit dem Teufel Schach spielen. St. Bernhard zeigte die nachfolgende Stellung, welche unser Diagramm wiedergibt. Weiß hatt mit dem Bh2 drei Offiziere von Schwarz geschlagen; er hatte eben (von e7 nach d8) eine vierte Figur genommen und holte sich einen dritten weißen Läufer auf d8, worauf Schwarz zog und sich die unten angegebene Diagrammstellung Nr.14 ergab. Es wird nach den jetzigen modernen Regeln gespielt, ferner kann man sich davon überzeugen, daß die Diagrammstellung eine mögliche, d.h. aus dem Anfange einer Partie ableitbare, ist. Es geschehen zunächst die nachfolgenden, von beiden Seiten verabredeten Züge: (Weiß; St. Bernhard, Schwarz: der Teufel) 1. e4 h5 2. Lc4 h4 3. Df3 g6 4. Lxf6 a6 Weiß zieht und setzt in 3 Zügen Matt.
(Die Aufgabe war zunächst mißverständlich formuliert, dies wurde in Heft 02/1885 korrigiert.)
