Mario Richter: wBh5 is a promoted bishop, wPa2-e/g8 and white double-pawns e2/e5+g2/g6 require the capture of all missing black men. A.Buchanan: Well spotted, Mario. The first 33.5 retractions are clear but then there is a bit more flexibility. Can sLg7 be shifted to b6? I don’t think it’s actually needed in the former location. (2021-02-17)
Mario Richter: For me, this dual makes the problem cooked.

I think that shifting sLg7 to b6 doesn't help (e.g. it allows the Bishop to uncapture the white pawn ob a5) (2021-02-17)
A.Buchanan: Sorry I wasn't trying to imply that the "flexibility" is tolerable: it's definitely cooked. Without the clock ticking for the mate, there is no unique retraction at all, as Black pieces can just wander all over. I don't suppose we can shift sBb7 to b6? (2021-02-17)
Mario Richter: No, shifting sBb7 to b6 allows a black rook to temporarily occupy b7, thereby giving wLd6 the opportunity for tempo moves, e.g. R: 1. ... Tc7-c8 2. Ka8-b8 Tb7-c7 3. Lb8-d6 Kc8-d8 4. Ld6-b8 Td8-d7 5. Lc7-d6 Te8-d8 6. Lb8-c7 Td7-b7 7. Ld6-b8 Kd8-c8 8. Kb8-a8, dann 1. Lc7# (2021-02-17)

White's pawn captures of bRRB took place on f3,g3,h3. So wPa & wPc were waylaid on their initial files. (wPa could not promote because a7 only emptied after a8 was occupied by bN.) So there are just wQR available for Black pawn captures, and one of them was b6. Therefore bPf & bPg did not cross-capture. Both of them must have moved to their final squares in order for either bR to escape (a file again blocked). Thus when gxRf3 happened to release wBf1, the constraining pawns e2,f3,f5,f6 were all in place. The only way for bB from c8 to have passed wBf1 is if it could occupy the nook on h1. So wRh1 has shifted and White can't castle.

0. ... g4 (Zugzwang) 1.hxg4#
play all play one stop play next play all
Henrik Juel: The above is a try, I believe; wP's captured all missing black men, including orig. Lf8. Solution: 0... g4 1.hxg4#. (2004-01-12)

Mario Richter: There seems to be a new feature "[recalculate solution]" not yet explained in the "What's new" section. What exactly does it do?

Regarding the keyword "Whose move?", I would like to replace it with "no legal last move for Black" - any protests? (2020-05-02)

A.Buchanan: The animation requires set of steps which is computed based on the stipulation & solution when someone finishes an edit of the solution. If there is a change to the stipulation then the animation isn't automatically recomputed. Historically, this has required editing the solution and making at least a trivial change, e.g. blank character on the end, to force the animation to be recomputed. I guess the [recalculate solution] button does this automatically. I think it only needs to be present if the solution has got red marks in it. (2020-05-02)

hans: bBa4 looks impossible to get there. We need all pieces for the three captures of white and black. (2011-12-09)
Henrik Juel: What is the problem, Hans?
White captured g2xh3 and hxgxh and promoted on a8 and h8; Black captured axb and exdxc, so all missing men were captured by pawns.
I expect the resolution involves extracting a white rook via g1, like in the many other retros with a similar matrix.
Without a black bishop on a4 the resolution seems rather simple and relatively fast, whereas the stipulation suggests lots and lots of waiting retractions by the black king. (2011-12-09)
hans: I spoke too soon, but your suggestion is wrong, white captures are gxh and hxgxf=B and this Bishop goes to b8, for b2-b3 can only be played after bBa4 is arrived. And I found a solution, only cost 52 moves after c4-c3. The position after that last pawn move is wKb4, Qf8, wRa3, wRa2, wRb2, wSf3, bKh1. First Sf3 to f1, to block and for the last moves Sf1-g3+ Kg2 Sh1. (2011-12-09)

Henrik Juel: The stipulation stands for series-self-retro-stalemate, I think: White retracts 29 moves (no uncaptures) (in a series without Black intervention) to reach a position where White retractions are no longer possible (except uncaptures). The Taylor type may refer to the no uncapture rule. (2009-10-23)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: The analysis above shows that since BRg2 could have come from g4 in 1 step or 2 either side can be on the move and mate in 1.
The primary thematic content of this fine problem is not affected, it can be shown by the stipulation: "What promotion moves were played?".
Before promoting WB on g8 Pg7xf6 must release Bf8 for capture by Ph2. This locks the East cage so promoted WB prevents BB from reaching g8. Therefore:
WB was promoted on a8; BPa7,b7 made three captures to clear the way for Pa2 and promote to BB; WPh2 promoted on g8 since it cannot be captured by BPs.
The promotion to BB is done from a2 not c2 as Pc2-c3 is needed for a later tempo move.
Solution: WPg7-g8=N, WPa7-a8=B, BPa2xb1=B

To keep the #1 move WBg6 to h7, WNb1 to g6, BPb5 to b4

Yoav Ben-Zvi: On further review the East cage can be released by retracting WPd2-d3 followed by removal of WBf1 and BQg1.
In this case WBc1 was captured at home and BPa7 promoted from a2 (after the capture of WPa2). This ruins my suggested correction above.
