Wo wurden die fehlenden Steine geschlagen?
Henrik Juel: Solution: 2 bP's were captured ep on b6,c6 to explain the check; 2 bS's were captured on f7,e8 because of wRd8; orig. bQ was captured on d8, so bK could sit on d8, when White played Sf6-g8; hence bR was captured on g3; wR was captured on b2 to allow orig. bPa7 to promote. (2003-5-26)

Henrik Juel: Solution: Yes, the position is legal and White is mate. Last move was g7xh6#, so bP's captured all missing white men; it turns out that the black captures were h7xBg6, b6xRc5, a7xRb6, g7xRh6#, while White captured gxQh, f3xRg4xRh5 and promoted to R on h8,h8,a8. -1... g7:R -2.Sf6 d7 -3.Sg4 Sd3 -4.Sf2; now there is no time pressure and the positions releases as intimated above. Simon Foulkes: I think the problem is cooked. 1. Ka3xBb3 Ba2+ 2. d2 Se8 3. Qg6 Bc2 etc. One of the white squared black bishops simply promoted on c1. The position unravels. (2004-8-19)
gw: The solution found by Henrik is indeed the author's solution, and I think that the cook by Simon is correct (with the typo that the promotion of the white squared black bishop occured on f1, not c1). (2004-8-19)
gw: Simon, your cook has now been confirmed by Hans Gruber, thanks again! There is no mistake in the diagram, so it seems that the cook has indeed remained unnoticed until now. (2004-8-26)

Original bRh8 never got out; W. has to uncapture on g3 to retract the check (mate), and one wP cap. exf3 accounts for missing b. men. One bP cap. accountsfor w.cP, and w.aP died on its file. Thus b.fP went to f3 for w.exf3, and bR to g3. To release the position, w. lightsquare B must retract to f1 after being relieved of his shield duty on f7 by thebR, relieved in turn by wSd7, relieved by bSd5. This is probably the record for longest determined retroplay in position where one of the sides is represented by a bare King. In case that repetitions are disregarded, it is possible to achieve 26 determined retromoves, as in problem P1193563. (2011-4-25)

Des Autors (geb.27.12.1938)"`Erstling"', also mit 36 Jahren.
Henrik Juel: Black captured [Lf1] on f1 (so Le4 is promoted), h7xg6xh5 on light squares, and a3xLb2; White captured axPb, dxc, h7xg8=L, and once with [Pf2] (as this pawn was not captured on its file)
It seems that last move could have been a3xLb2 (in addition to the intended c7-c5), implying that this problem unfortunately is cooked by no solution (2017-6-24)

Henrik Juel: My guess is -1.Ra6:B. (2003-6-2)
Mario Richter: Position after 1.Ra6:B looks illegal to me: How do you get the wK out of his prison? (2010-4-15)
Henrik Juel: My 2003 guess was probably a youthful attempt to provoke somebody to copy the tedious solution from Die Schwalbe, so far without success. (2010-4-16)
Mario Richter: Unfortunately I only have the issue of Die Schwalbe, in which the problem was published (so I can confirm, that the diagram is correct), but not the one with the solution.
Pleas notice, that the complete stipulation reads: "Weiß nimmt einen Zug so zurück, daß die (entstehende) Stellung remis ist!" (White retracts one move in such a way, that the (resulting) position is drawn!)
(There are many compositions, which use the 50-moves-rule, but this one is perhaps the most complicated one to solve.) (2010-4-17)

A.Buchanan: Would appreciation clarification on how the 50M rule & convention apply here. (2015-8-31)
A.Buchanan: Specifically, in the prior position we are asked to find, doesn't the 50M rule trigger the end of the game, so we can't proceed to the diagram position? (2015-9-1)
Henrik Juel: The end of the game cannot be triggered before it has been established that 50.0 moves without captures, pawn moves, or castlings have been played (2015-9-1)
VL: In author's book "Po sledam shakhmatnykh figur" (Tracing Chess Pieces), Zaporozh'e, 1998, p.66-7, this problem is stipulated so: "W retracts his last move and demands to fix a draw" [to recognize, to declare]. Implicitly, more or less clear in Russian, 'demands' means 'justifiedly demands'. Indeed, at the end of the solution, in which the last move 51... O-O-O! is called critical, the author writes: "So, between castling and wRa6xBa7, 50 full moves without captures and P's advances were made. The demand of W is correct: a draw by Laws of Chess!" AK considers the 50-move rule as acting non-automatically, therefore -Ra6xBa7! is legal. (2015-9-12)

Henrik Juel: Solution: If White castled 11 single moves ago, no Q-moves occured at all! The diagram Q's just promoted, and the orig. Q's were captured at home. -1.Q=a7 Q=a2 -2.Kf1 a3 -3.Kg1 b4:R -4.Rf3 Sd1 -5.Rf1 hSf2 -6.0-0. White promoted his h-P to R on h8, and moved Sf6-h7 when bK sat on d8. (2003-5-26)
