Henrik Juel: The long march by black king to uncapture [Th1] was shown in 1930 by Niels Høeg, P0001754 (2018-2-23)
Henrik Juel: ...
But there might exist an even earlier problem by Troitzky, who died in 1942, so this problem must be a version by Korolkov (2018-2-23)
Mario Richter: In his article in 'Problem (Zagreb)' Korolkov mentiones, that in the last years of Troitzky's life, when he lived in Leningrad, Korolkov often visited him and they "not only dealed with the construction of endgame studies, but also of retrograde analysis problems."
Someone with better knowledge of the russian language might perhaps provide more details ... (2018-2-24)
Henrik Juel: So this problem may be a joint composition, although it seems strange that it was published 15 years after Troitzky's death (2018-2-24)
A.Buchanan: According to Wikipedia sadly, Troitsky died of starvation in 1942 in the siege of Leningrad. With all the disruption, perhaps not surprising that publication of this problem was delayed. What was the story of Korolkov's life? Did he leave Leningrad before the siege, or did he survive it? (2018-2-24)
VL: Well, Andrew, VK worked (for appr. 50 years) as an electrical engineer at the famous Kirov plant. Afaik, during the WWII he evacuated together with the plant to Ural (to the so-called Tank City near Chelyabinsk). (2018-2-25)

Schwarz zog zuletzt einen Springer. Was war sein letzter Zug?
R: 1. ... Se3-f1
play all play one stop play next play all
Henrik Juel: Last move wasn't Se3xLf1, because then the parity of white (even) and black (uneven) moves shows that White moved last. So last move was Se3-f1, allowing wTh1 to have triangulated (Th1-g1-f1-h1).
A.Buchanan: With the stipulation as it stands, I don't think the keyword 'Last move of a specific piece?' is appropriate here. All other problems of that kind are unconditional. This is simply a conditional last move problem. But if we swap sSf1 & wLc1, then the stipulation can simply be "Last move of sSc1?", and then the keyword is merited. With all due respect to the composer, it surprises me that this made the Album. (2017-1-19)
A.Buchanan: And would need to specify who has the move (2017-1-19)

Sc6-b8: White is finishing his move! (2017-1-16)
A.Buchanan: So "hält" here means "touch", as all White pieces are on the board. Could it not equally well be Black touching wcP or wFP prior to capturing it with a Sa1 or Sh1 respectively? (2017-1-19)
Henrik Juel: I do not know the original (Russian?) stipulation
The two translations here seem at odds with each other, the English one talking about move, while the German one asks for the last move
The intended stipulation probably is simply 'Last move?', and the stuff about holding or touching a white man is just a confusing smoke screen that may have been included as an attempt to disguise the parity argument, which shows that White made the last move (2017-1-19)

VL: Presumable repair: shift wSa2 to a1 and wSd1 to h2. (2017-1-16)
A.Buchanan: The existing cook has a spare White move, so wSh2 could just use that to hop out of the way. Or can mate itself on h7. The difficulty is that sSf6 can't be shifted because its current square serves to eliminate a dual in Black move ordering. (2017-1-19)

VL: Only one castling is legal. Therefore presently (since 2009), due to Art.16 (3) of the Codex, this diagram, as is, represents a sound retro-problem (PRA) with one solution consisting of two partial ones. I guess just this was authors' intention.
