paul: Compare with P0002278 & P0002279 (2010-04-30)
Mu-Tsun Tsai: This one is by far the toughest retro I've ever solved. Very little certain information can be determined by structural consideration alone, even with long and complicated argument. It took me five days to complete solving this. (2012-07-22)
A.Buchanan: @Mu-Tsun: that's an interesting data point - thanks for posting. (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: The current record is 58.5 moves in a proof game problem by the authors + Keym, Die Schwalbe 2017 (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: I just learned that the 58.5 move proof game has been cooked... (2017-09-07)
A.Buchanan: In retrospect, my earlier comment about "interesting data point" is a bit weak. It's actually great that for such an extreme problem, someone took substantial time to independently validate it. It's like doing science: people want to do their own new stuff, and are unwilling to take the time to validate what's already been claimed. This one has survived 30+ years, and maybe the use of constraints e.g. in Jacobi can eventually allow it to be HC+. (2021-05-29)
Olaf Jenkner: This problem is the current record, because P1338946 (58.5 moves) has been cooked. (2021-11-25)
Reto: This is C+ up to 51.0 moves with Stelvio 2.0. This ties the record for partial testing of an SPG. Took 1200 CPU hours of strategy seeking (finding 378 0+0 strategies) and another 13h of strategy playing these strategies. If this can ever be completely solved, then it needs to be the case that all strategies have 0+0 free moves, otherwise playing is utterly hopeless.
@Andrew: There is absolutely no way a brute-force based program like Jacobi ever stands a chance at solving something like this, no matter how many conditions you add. (2023-12-14)

Ld3-h7# Th1-h8 2. Lh8-g7 Tg1-h1 3. Se1-g3 g2-g1=T 4. Th7-h8=L scheitert allerdings an der Schlagbilanz.

Yoav Ben-Zvi: WBd8 can be replaced with a BN after moving BPg7 to f7 and BPh5 to h6. (2018-08-08)
A.Buchanan: Yes after all these years, I found this a few months ago, but when I told Thomas Brand, he said that Werner Keym had found it - one of a series of modifications through seeking to avoid non-standard material. (2018-08-12)
Henrik Juel: Werner's improvement can be found in his 'Eigenartige Schachprobleme' from 2010, p.196, dia 1.68 (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: I thought it was more recent (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: In fact Werner was not trying to avoid non-standard material, but to prefer "cheaper" knights over bishops. But this is not the canonical ordering, which regards knights and bishops as equivalent. So the older record will win out in classical terms. (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: And non-standard material is no defect, according to the 1977 grading criteria, so old Theophilus reigns supreme (2019-10-04)
Henrik Juel: The further retroplay is
-1... h6 -2.a6 and e.g. -2... Ka7 -3.a5 Ta8 -4.Tb8 Ka6 -5.Kc8
and wK out via g6 (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: I don't know if a bishop is more expensive than a knight for these economy records. If modifying the criteria, I personally would prefer to minimize non-standard material. But more generally, how to handle a later version of economy record, with similar force? In some cases, the change is trivial, just transforming one unit which might as well be a dummy. At the other extreme, the matrix is completely different. In "Eigenartige Schachprobleme", Werner Keym stoically prefers the earlier record. Even the original composer(s) of a record problem are forbidden from making any artistic improvement to a published economy record! Over the years, the only change to the grading criteria is that Type C problem now needs to contain a check. Any old check-free Type C would a fortiori have been a Type B economy record at least. Here in PDB, I've tagged some cases of "ex-aequo" (search k='economy:eq') but I fear that Werner would not approve of this. What should we do? (2022-03-31)

Michel Caillaud: The original stipulation is #1 (durch wen?).
As wPe2 cannot be captured on its file, the 4 white captures for 4 Pawns to promote to Knights are (a2)xb3, (e2)xf3 and (f2)xg3 2 times, and wPb2 was captured on its file by (Dd8)xb6.
As b3-b2 (before (a2xb3)) and c7-c6 (before (Dd8)xb6) cannot be immediately retracted, only bK and wSs can play the last moves.
As indicated by Gerald, bK has to go to g8 to unlock the position, freeing bSg5.
When Ka3-a2 is retracted, previous white move places the 6 white Knights on black squares; the resulting Retro-Opposition implies that black is to play in the diagram position.

GW: Yes, that's the solution, and the problem seems indeed to be cooked. I don't know if it has been corrected. (2003-04-28)
James Malcom: I believe that the intent was that the sLc1 must be the orginal one, and thus an impediment to wK foreplay, as the wBc6 "must" have captured the e7 Black pawn on its way from f2. The problem is that it can take the alternative path fxsLf3xDe3xTc5-c6, and there are enough White pieces to capture for the Black b pawn to make it d2 and for the d pawn to make it to c2. A.Buchanan: Without getting into the distant retro history, I am guessing that the intended solution is R: 1. h2-h1=S+ a7-d8=L 2. Kc8-d8, then 1. h1=T a8=D#, so it's an allumwandlung. (2021-06-28)
A.Buchanan: If we retract the last three single moves in this way, the position is legal. White Volet pawn captures f2xPe3xdxcxbxa7, while bPh was waylaid. Black captures were bxa,axb,dxc2,gxh2. bPf promoted to B. Can we release this position? There are no tempo issues, the White officers float free, then e.g. d2-d3 unlocks everything.
Is the solution unique? If wBa8 is original, or promoted further to the right, this saves captures of black officers, which allows wPab to cross-capture instead of bPab. This means bQ or bB might uncapture wQ or wR, however I don't see any h#1 forward from that. An engine supporting simple retractions, without regard to global legality, could allow an HC+ solution as exceptions can be checked by hand. I hand the baton to Mario Richter at this point, for further validation :) (2021-06-28)
Mario Richter: rawbats finds many solutions, the most trivial one supports your observation that claiming that wLa8 is an original Bishop, gives White new opportunities:
R: 1. ... Bh2-h1=S 2. Lc6-a8 Le8xBd7, dann 1. h1=T dxe8=D# (2021-06-28)
A.Buchanan: Thanks, Mario. WinChloe has Jean-Claude Gandy as co-author, who I will add. However it is listed in WinChloe as "analytic retractor" rather than "help-retractor". What is the distinction, and does it affect soundness? (2021-06-30)
Henrik Juel: I think there is no real distinction, Andrew
This problem is a help retractor, because White and Black help each other in the retroplay (as opposed to a defensive retractor, where they fight), not because of the forward stipulation
For some people this may be confusing, and the term 'analytic retractor' might 'help' those few, although any problem with retroplay necessarily involves som retro analysis
Analytic retractor can also be used as opposed to the Mrs. Baird type retractor, which involves little analysis (2021-06-30)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for the helpful clarification, Henrik (2021-06-30)

Zuge."

A.Buchanan: The retro logic is fine, but forward play is savagely cooked. I wonder about changing wSc8 to sS. The retro stuff still works OK, indeed sSc8 is a fourth thematic unit to retract in the try. Ignoring proof of ep legality, there is a unique #4 beginning with ep, and no #5. Promising: but when can we interpolate w000? Any solution must begin 1. axb6ep+ Kb5. There are now numerous #4, but none include w000, so I think we must stick with the still unique line beginning 2. Dxc8 thr 3. 0-0-0. There are 3 black defenses to refute this. 2. ... Txb6,axb3,d5. So maybe #6 needed for White to prevail? (2022-03-28)
A.Buchanan: But if we shift to #6 then 1. Sxc7!,Qxc8+! mate without ep. Can anyone retrieve the original diagram for this one, please? (2022-03-28)
Mario Richter: The position here is identical to the original diagram, but it should be regarded more as a schematic example than a "real problem". Fabel in his quote above: "... perhaps the problem is still not correct, but it should be easy to improve it ..." (2022-03-28)
Henrik Juel: unfortunately K. Fabel forgot to give the easy correction... (2022-03-28)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for this. Valery Liskovetz, an AP expert, was kind enough to send a pdf of the relevant Problem issue, so I can confirm. It's easy enough to remove the two cooks (e.g. sTc8) but the difficulty is in validation of the intended solution. Is there any "exact" option in Popeye that forces the solution to include a waiting move? The actual solution might be expected to be included in that set. (2022-03-29)
Henrik Juel: Yes, Andrew
'stip exact-#5' would disregard #4 as a solution, I believe (2022-03-29)
A.Buchanan: Even with the "exact", it's still very complicated to investigate. I think this kind of problem requires an engine feature to disallow any mate or pat if the specified castling has not been executed. Gazing at the 20,000 lines of output, I don't think sTc8 works as 1. axb6ep+ Kb5 2. Qb7 bxa3! threatens axb2+ after castling. I wonder if the board might be flipped left-right except for wK, but I haven't explored this. (2022-05-31)

A.Buchanan: In both candidate solutions, counting of wPs after retraction on means it must be an original unit uncaptured on h1 so can only be wS.
The solution for b) does not work for a) because, if one retracts two promoting moves, then wPs have captured 9/10 missing Black units, while Black has 1/2 accounted for by wBc1. However wPg & bPg passed one another, which requires two more captures by a single player.
In b) the exciting retraction Qa8xh8 is blocked, however now the free pawn captures to explain g-file are shifted from 1+1 to 2+0, so bPg can pass wPg. But the vacation of d2 allows a new cook. This is fixable by shifting wPb instead of wPd. We don't need to shift it to an adjacent file: the solution is still ok if the balance is 2+1.
So "b) wPb2 to b7" fixes the cook, and it's validated by deadpos. (2024-01-15)

The pawns have captured 8 times to get around each other, plus 2 times to create the square color imbalance (6 light-squared white bishops and only 4 black ones). Thus all captures were done by pawns, so retractions like Ka3xb2, Kb3-b2, or Kc2-b2 are illegal.
Henrik Juel: The problems in this issue were dedicated to T.R. Dawson to celebrate his 60th birthday on 28/11/1949
The solution (FCR 06/1950 p.109) offered no real explanation
Dawson just wrote: Cooks claimed to this masterpiece involve illegal retractions (2022-04-28)

Autor: Dr. Schwarz
HBae: Autor unklar, welcher Schwarz ? (2010-11-15)
Henrik Juel: 'Dr. Schwarz' may well be a pseudonym.
The position is legal, but just barely so. (2010-11-15)
Olli Heimo: The current record is 51, look at http://www.xs4all.nl/~timkr/chess2/diary.htm

378. 25 March 2008: New record by Alexey Khanyan - 51 consecutive checks (2010-11-16)
HBae: Thank You Olli (2010-11-17)
Mario Richter: The author might have been Dr. Karl Hermann Schwarz.

The position has some interesting features:
- With Black to move, there are 43 consecutive checks: 1. ... Rh3-d3+ 2.Nc1xd3+ Kf2-f1+ 3.Be4-g2+ Nf4xg2+ 4.Rd4-f4+ Ng2xf4+ 5.Bd5-g2+ Nf4xg2+ 6.Rc4-f4+ Ng2xf4+ 7.Bc6-g2+ Nf4xg2+ 8.Rb4-f4+ Ng2xf4+ 9.Bb7-g2+ Nf4xg2+ 10.Ra4-f4+ Ng2xf4+ 11.Ba8-g2+ Rh2xg2+ 12.Ne1xg2+ Qc7-c1+ 13.Nd3xc1+ Re7-e2+ 14.Nc1xe2+ Qc8-c1+ 15.Ne2xc1+ Re8-e2+ 16.Nc1xe2+ Bb2-c1+ 17.Ne2xc1+ Nd6-c4+ 18.Qa6xc4+ Qh5-e2+ 19.Nc1xe2+ Ba3-c1+ 20.Ne2xc1+ Nf4-d3+ 21.Qc4-f4+ Bh6xf4+ 22.Ng2-e3+ Bf4xe3+
- slightly modified (if the bQ is put on g1 instead of h5), then with WTM 44 consecutive checks are possible. (2010-11-17)

Automatische Zugfolge (No-brainer)
PS 23 November: Some readers wondered (I did, too) whether the position of the 10-move no-brainer is legal. It is, says Elkies: "One pawn capture on a side yields three promotable pawns (a6xb7 and c3xd2, with White promoting bbc and Black add); and two piece captures on a side give four more promoting pawns (e6xf7, g6xh7, promote ffhh; f3xe2, h3xg2, promote eegg)."
Henrik Juel: The position is indeed legal, but Noam's explanation of seven white and seven black promotions might be clarified
By 'pawn capture' he means PxP, and by 'piece capture' he means that an officer is captured by a pawn
e6xLf7 and g6xLh7 are not both possible here, as the two missing black officers have different square colors, but the latter capture could be g5xLh6 after Black has played Ph7-h5 (2018-11-02)

Pairs of repeated diagrams marked (*)
Nikolai Beluhov: Throughout the game, three different positions had to be repeated two times each (with the other side on the move) in order for the position to be formed.
The theme of loss-of-tempo-motivated position repetition was deeply explored by Luigi Ceriani (1894-1969) and is present in many of his works, including numerous ortho-reconstructions.
I only know of two twofold implementations: P1183992 by Ceriani himself (possibly a version by N. Plaksin or A. Kuznetsov of P0002948) and P0005418 by S. Volobuev (with a "#1" stipulation which determines the side to move in the diagram position). D. Baibikov's problem presents the first ever threefold implementation. (2011-01-02)
A.Buchanan: “fake game array” (FPI) is another special case of Ceriani’s player inversion (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: This is a wonderful problem. The repeated diagrams are where wDb8 & sLb7. There are sequences e.g. n. Db8~ Lb7-c8 (*) n+1. Dd8-b8 La8-b7 n+2. Dc8-d8 Lb7-a8 n+3. Db8-c8 (*) La8-b7. Need to ensure that over this sL shifts from c8 to a8, otherwise there are unnecessary additional repeated diagrams. Have fixed the solution given above. (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: “Position” is diagram + the move + castling rights + e.p. status. What is repeated is a diagram. Given that the stipulation was in Russian originally, I dare to change the stipulation here... (2021-02-25)

Editor's comment: Do not be put off by the length of R546: there is a repeated sequence of moves.
James Malcom: Solution? Also, is this an Othoreconstrution? (2023-05-30)
Henrik Juel: Here is the solution from the May 2020 issue (from www.theproblemist.org , which is a treasure of info, althoug I find it hard to navigate)
R546 (Le Gleuher): Retroanalysis: The wPs captured the 4 missing black units.
Thus, wPb4 comes from b2, and (Pa2) promoted to the extra wR on a8 with (Pa7)
letting it pass by switching to the b file (first capture of the 3 missing white units).
(Pb7) must have promoted to a rook on a1 or c1 (second capture). (Ph7) must
have moved onto the g file (third and final capture) in order to be captured. Thus
(Pc7) and (Pe7) promoted to rooks on the c and e files, respectively. It is not
possible to immediately take back a4xb3 or c2xd3. The retro-move e4xf5 is
forbidden since then the bP which promoted on e1 cannot retract to e5. Black can
only move in the southeast cage, while White’s bishop is free to oscillate between
c2 and b1.

The diagram position is a draw and the last 103 single moves are determined.
White to move: back 1…Kg1-f1 …
51.h3-h4 Bh4-g3 52.Bc2-b1 then the same… Here, there are 99 single moves between the diagram position and the retro-move h3-h4. Of course, trying to insert another manoeuvre in the solution would lead to an overshoot of the 101 single moves, which would be incompatible with the 50 moves rule. Here only 102 last single moves are determined.
So, we have a D25/102, a new record for last single moves for ‘D’ type (Duplex) with 25 pieces (It is also
the overall record for Duplex). With black to move, the same diagram is also a record with 25 pieces (B25/103) (2023-05-30)

Henrik Juel: Correct key, but damaged by multiple threats and duals, e.g.
1.Kd3 thr. 2.e8=DTLS,Ke4 (2020-09-27)
James Malcom: Typo fixed. And Henrik, the threats are not the point here. The point here is how the different play of the Black knight changes White's promotions. (2020-09-27)
A.Buchanan: It's a beautiful idea, still looking for its rendering though as the many duals and the obstreperous wL are quite distracting (2020-09-28)
James Malcom: There aren't any duals in full-length variations, though. The extra bishop is indeed annoying, but unfixable so far. (2020-09-28)
A.Buchanan: There are still some trivial duals in the mating move, but yes. This problem is trying to ignore threats: you can see that the computer solution. The solution is much more coherent with "nosh noth" switched on. So when are the cases, Henrik, when you switch those options on? It would be event better if one was able to switch threats on for the 4th move. This underscores that there should be a Popeye option for any white move "noth" is self-selecting, depending upon the number of variations. (2020-09-29)
Henrik Juel: Andrew, I use the Popeye option 'nosh' when the output without them is overwhelmingly large
The 'not' option is tricky, and usually expands the output; in some cases it shows apparent duals that are not real ones, when you apply the rule that dualistic play should be ignored, when it appears after black moves that do not prevent the threat
In the case of multiple threats things get messy, like in this problem, as I recall (2020-09-29)

not 2.e7-e8=sK, because then sTa8 would have moved, and castling not allowed (2020-10-14)

James Malcom: How does this work exactly? What forbids the rook from just making some random tempi move in a game that leads to this position? (2020-12-12)
Mario Richter: James, think of time pressure. In the diagram, Black has only two retractions (a7xSb6xSa5). The only way to unlock the position is the retraction of e2-e3.

A.Buchanan: Ha, there is no solving competition for these either. But it's to avoid Gerd's solving competition protection algorithm picking up false positives (2020-12-12)
A.Buchanan: TxP happens to be the last move, but it's also the first effective move of the rook, as it is considered to be a *passenger* in the castling, and not to have moved yet. Otherwise can't get first move of a rook fixed if it capturing (except possibly by DP logic). See the explanatory article: https://www.dieschwalbe.de/download/artikel/Passenger_Rooks.pdf (2020-12-12)

Authors' solution: hey wait: so is there a dual? Well no. What was Black's last move? Let's look at all the captures & promotions first:
White: captured P promoted RRRRRBS
Black: captured QRRBBSS promoted -

bPs all on original columns: no black cross-captures. So 7 wPs captured once and promoted. The exception must have been poor wPh, because it can't get past bPh anyway, and was waylaid on its starting file by an officer. Other wPs captured as axb, bxc, cxd, dxc/e, exd, fxe, gxh before promoting.

The sequence of bP moves must have been one of:
(i) bPc6 (allows wPd to pass) then bPd5 (allows promoted rooks to escape) then bPe6 (when all the rooks are out, letting wPf to pass)
(ii) bPe6 then bPd5 then bPc6.

So which? In (i) the units promoting late on e8 & h8 must have been S & B, as the door was closed on escaping rooks. But e8 is a light square, and h8 is blocked by bPg7 which never moved. So neither could have promoted to B. Therefore it was option (ii), pawn move sequence roughly:
bPe6 & bPh6
gxh=R, fxe=R, dxe=R,
bPd5
exd=R, cxd=R
5 Rs all exit
bPc6
bxc=S
bPb6
axb=B

Bottom line: all the bP moves and captures were historical, and so it must be bK which just moved. We can now use Retractor 2 program from Theodore Hwa at http://xenon.stanford.edu/~hwatheod/retractor2/retractor.html to validate our manual analysis of the retro play, ignoring any suggestions which involve capture. So wRa had already moved: no castling now.
Henrik Juel: Black captured [Ph2] with an officer
The other white pawns captured all missing black men to promote seven times
Last move was not made by a black pawn as this would ruin the promotions, so it was Kc3-d3
Retroplay: 1... Kc3-d3 2.De4-b4+ Kb2-c3! 3.Lb4-a3+ Kb1-b2! 4.Ta3-a1+ or Ta2-a1+ (other K retractions just postpone the inevitable), so 1.0-0-0 is illegal

Good problem, maybe the best in the tourney (2021-06-08)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik. Can you figure out which pawns promoted to which kind of officers on which squares? (2021-06-09)
Henrik Juel: No, I would expect there were several feasible promotion patterns
But the need to move [Pb7c7d7e7] very carefully can easily make your suggestion correct
Offhand I do not see the right sequence, so you are welcome to enlighten me (2021-06-10)
Henrik Juel: I think I got it
(promote [Pg2] to rook on h8 at some early time)
first e7-e6, promote [Pd2f2] to rooks on e8
then d7-d5, promote [Pc2e2] to rooks on d8
get all promoted rooks out
finally [Pb2] promotes to knight on c8 and [Pa2] to bishop on b8 (2021-06-10)
A.Buchanan: Exactly! If you try the other way round, there’s nowhere to promote B (2021-06-10)

KrabbéProudly presenting: a problem, dedicated to me, by the prominent Dutch composer Gerard Bouma, who has already often been very helpful when I wanted to illustrate the problem art in these pages.
Trying to solve these elegant miniature twins gave me a pleasure that I invite the reader to share. I did solve them (found the ways to mate Black in time), but I confess that I missed the wittiest point of the whole thing.
In a), 1.Qg7 (Kd8 2.Bd6 etc.) is defeated by O-O-O! Therefore: 1.Qc5 Kd7 2.Qd6+ Kc8 3.Qc6+ Kd8 4.Kf7 and 5.Be7 mate
In b), this doesn't work because Black has 4...Ra7+ Now, however, White can play 1.Qxg7 There follows 1...Kd8 2.Bd6 Ra7 3.Qxa7 and mate in two more moves. But can't Black castle here? That is what this problem is really about. He can't. If he could, his last move should have been with the Pf6. If it was f7-f6, then the white King, in its march to g8, would necessitate the black King to have been away from e8 temporarily. If the Pf6 captured to f6 in its last move (this is what I forgot), then the Bf8 must be a promoted Pf7 - also proving the black King must at some time have moved. No castling.
Thanks to those readers who sent me solutions - most of them entirely correct.
