Henrik Juel: The intention may be 1.dxc3ep 2.Kxb5xc6-d7-e8 6.0-0 Rh8#, but -1.Kb2 seems possible. Should bBc1 be moved to a3? (2003-04-28)
GW: Yes, that's the solution, and the problem seems indeed to be cooked. I don't know if it has been corrected. (2003-04-28)
James Malcom: I believe that the intent was that the sLc1 must be the orginal one, and thus an impediment to wK foreplay, as the wBc6 "must" have captured the e7 Black pawn on its way from f2. The problem is that it can take the alternative path fxsLf3xDe3xTc5-c6, and there are enough White pieces to capture for the Black b pawn to make it d2 and for the d pawn to make it to c2. (2021-09-14)
James Malcom: It turns out this problem actually was corrected a long time later: P1012052 (2021-09-14)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cook found in P0002554 re-opens the question of the current length record for unique capture-free SPG. A search in PDB finds this problem, assuming it is sound, to be the record holder, until Unto Heinonen publishes a correction (expected very soon). Prior to publication of this problem the record was 38.5, in Michel Caillaud's P0002187. (2019-07-10)

Henrik Juel: These solution corrections should help the animation:
3... g2-g1=D, 6... f2-f1=S, 24... Db1-b2
Hans-Jürgen's numbering is a single move off from retraction 28.
(1.c2xDd3 is white, 28.a5xDb4 is black)
The stipulation seems to ask for the minimal number of black knight moves
(usually SS means knights, but here it may mean 'schwarze Springer') (2021-07-10)
Mario Richter: Henrik, if the question were about black Knight moves only, wSh3 would be able to make tempo moves, allowing e.g. to start with c2xTd3 instead of c2xDd3.
I do not have the official solution, but it obviously is: 4 Knight moves - wSb1-c3-d1,wSg1-h3 and bSb8-d7. bSg8 didn't move at all and was captured by a White officer. (2021-07-11)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your new solution, Mario, and for your enlightenments
I was misled by the originally stated solution and by Hans-Jürgen's retro game
The german convention that D means Dame=queen and DD means Damen=queens etc. may not be generally understood, so for clarification I suggest that the stipulation is spelled out, something like
Welches war die minimale Anzahl von Springerzüge?
I totally agree with your comment on the strong condition implied by the stipulation (2021-07-11)

Thomas Volet: TV: solution given is slightly incorrect. Black's first retraction cannot be Se6-d4. It should be Sf5-d4, and the next two Black retromoves would then be Sd6-f5 and Sb7-d6. GW is so reliable I never check the solutions -- just happened to look at this one in connection with some correspondence. (2010-02-07)

Thomas Volet: White also might have begun the game with either 1.Sg1-f3 or 1.Sg1-h3. The point was to show reciprocal retroscreens (here by the WBb7 and BQb4, each of which screens for and is screened by the other) involving both Kings. Beyond that .... (2010-02-12)

I expect that Mario's observation (that the unpromotion could also happen on e8) would not have changed the award; if the wording had been 'auf e8 oder g8', we would know for sure (2021-06-18)

So it was fortunate that the problem was not awarded in the tourney, despite the enthusiastic solver comments (2013-08-31)

James Malcom: Is the given retraction unique? (2020-11-08)
Henrik Juel: Unique up to 11.c2-c3, I think (2020-11-08)
Henrik Juel: One of my favorite retros with just kings and pawns
even though the retroplay is not completely unique (so my previous comment is imprecise)
R: 2... h3-h2 3.Lf6-h4 h4-h3 or 3... f5-f4 also work
but not R: 1.e3-e4? or 1.c5-c6?, and White runs out of pawn retractions
nor 2. e3-e4? or 2. c5-c6? f5-f4 3. Le5-g3, and same difficulty (2020-11-09)
Henrik Juel: In the forward play we have several temporal implications, e.g.,
e2-e3 before b7xLa6 before g2xLf3 before g3-g2 before h2xg3
d6xc7 before e7xd6 before b2xLa3 before f4xLg3
Thierry was inspired by P0008574 (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: I see the similarities as well. If Thierry's last 21 moves, stopping at 11. c2-c3 of course, are indeed unique, it seems to be the record for a kindergarten position? (2020-11-09)
A.Buchanan: I think the last 2 single moves are determined. Prior to that it could be f5-f4 or h3-h2, no? (2020-11-10)
Henrik Juel: You are right, Andrew
So, no record, James (2020-11-10)
James Malcom: Ah well then-the linked problem with 16 moves by Gerd oughtta be it then, from what I've searched so far. (2020-11-10)
A.Buchanan: Isn’t the retro record one of the Breyer versions by Thierry Le Gleuher? (2020-11-10)
James Malcom: As far as I know, the TOTAL retro record is, all from P1339006, by Theierry indeed: Type A, 100 moves, Type B, 101 with bP6-h6 & White to move, and, finally Type C, 102 with bP6-h6 and wSc7-a8. (2020-11-10)

1er Prix : n°19 ;Hans Peter REHM.
(Juge : Claude Wiedenhoff)

Henrik Juel: In the position after 30.Sa2, the last white move must have been b2-b4, allowing the ep capture. This is permitted by the stipulation's c (= consequential), requiring that all intermediate positions are legal.
The content is all-promotion plus one D-promotion.
The retro content is very small, but traditionally consequential series movers are considered to be retro problems (2014-09-07)

A.Buchanan: If I've got it right, consequential sm is more than just asking that intermediate positions are legal. It involves at every move potentially a complete recalculation of rights. In regular sm and Alsatian fairy conditions, rights carry over from one move to the next. In Alsatian fairy conditions, all positions must be legal. Is this correct? (2022-07-12)
Henrik Juel: Yes, I think you are right, Andrew (2022-07-12)

In the position with five neutral men, Ke8 Tc8 Ld8 Sh8 SBa5, it does not find the #1, 1.a5xd8=nD# (2016-01-17)

Dreifache Retro-Intersection (e7,e5,e3), dreimal Retroopposition (e8,e6,e4), weißer Excelsior-Bauer e.

Yoav Ben-Zvi: Analysis in English (approved by the composer):
The release of the Western cage requires unpromotion of WBd2 on d8 (via f4-d6-e7) and retreat of the unpromoted pawn to d5 allowing retraction of BPd6xc5. When WBf4-d2 is retracted BN stands on f3 or f1 (ready to retract to d2 to replace the WB as a shield for the WK) and completion of the maneuver requires 5 tempo retractions by BPs including BPa3-a2. This means WQa3 and WRa4 need to stand on b3,a4 (not on a3 as this obstructs the retreat of BPa2). The position of the mobile pieces WQ,WR and BN implies, by the "Parity Argument", that prior to the retraction of WBf4-d2 White must retract an odd number of moves by a pawn unpromoted from WNe8. Standing on e6 or e4 the unpromoted pawn has played an even number of retractions while on e7, e5 or e3 it interferes with the retro-path of WBd2 to d8 so its only option is to retract to e2 using a double-step first move.
Parity Argument is the main theme of the problem combined with Retro-Opposition on a3 between BPa2 and WQb3/WRa4. (2017-11-27)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: The last move was WQh2xh3# leaving one further missing Black piece. BPb6 came from b7, it could not have played BPa7xb6 as this would prevent entry of a White bishop to a7.
WP could not have promoted on f8 or h8 as this would require 2 captures by White in addition to the capture on h3. This implies that WBa7 comes from c1.
WBa2 could not originate from a promotion of WPh2 on g8 since, to open the way for the promoting WP, BP would need to vacate g7 prior to the promotion by BPg7-g6 and BPs standing on g6, e6 (or f7) and d7 prevent the escape of the promoted bishop from the North-East corner. This implies that WBa2 comes from f1.
BBg1 could not originate from a promotion of BPa7 on a1 since escape of the promoted BB from the promotion square requires its release by WPb2-b3 which implies that WBf1 has previously arrived at a2 so it was previously released by WPg2-g3 but WP standing on g3 obstructs the subsequent path of the promoted BB to h2-g1. This implies that BBg1 comes from f8.
BBf7 could not have originated from c8 since release of [BBc8] by BPb7-b6 must be preceded by the arrival of [WBc1] at a7 which is preceded by release of [WBc1] by WPb2-b3 which is preceded by arrival of WB at a2 which is preceded by release of [WBf1] by WPg2-g3 which is preceded by arrival of [BBf8] at h2 which is preceded by release of [BBf8] by BPg7-g6. But BP standing on g6 obstructs the subsequent path of [BBc8] to f7. This implies that BBf7 originates from a promotion on b1 by [BPa7].
On its way to promotion on b1, [BPa7] could not play BPa3xb2 (since this requires previous advance of WPb2 to b3 which would prevent the escape of the bishop promoted on b1 to f7) so it must capture 3 White pieces. All three captures must be completed and the promoted bishop must exit via a2 before WPb2-b3 is played releasing [WBc1]. This means [WRh1] could not cross c1 to be captured by [BPa7] on a2 or b1. A fourth White piece is captured on e6 by [BPf7].
The following is known about the position when Black plays the last of his 4 captures by pawn (BPf7xe6 or BPa2xb1=B):
Prior to its fourth pawn capture Black could not complete the entry of the promoted bishop to its dynamic cage (e8,f7,g8) as the promotion requires 3 captures and entry into the cage requires removal of the obstructing [BPf7], a fourth capture. BPg7 had not yet advanced to g6 (on g6 it obstructs the path of the bishop promoted on b1 to f7) therefore it stood on g7. BBg1 stood on f8 (locked in its home cage by [BPg7]). [BRh8] stood locked in the North-East corner. WPg3 stood on g2 (on g3 it obstructs the path of [BBf8], after its release by BPg7-g6, to g1 via h2). WBa2 stood on f1 (locked in its home cage by [WPg2]). WPb3 stood on b2 (on b3 it would obstruct the path of WBf1, after its release by WPg2-g3, to a2). WBa7 stood on c1 (locked in its home cage by [WPb2]). WK stood on e1 or d1 while WQd1 either stood on d1 or had been captured there. With both WBs locked at home White’s central cage was also locked. BPb6 stood b7 (on b6 it obstructs the path of [WBc1], after its release by WPb2-b3, to a7). [WPa2] stood on a3 (required to allow entry of [BPa7] to a2). [WPh2] could not have promoted on g8 via g7 (due to obstruction by BP standing on g7), if it has not been captured then it advanced at least to h4 to allow escape of [WRh1] from the South-East corner (to be captured on e6 or b file).
The critical position (prior to last capture by BP) looks like this (alternatively BPf7 has already captured on e6 and BP stands on a2 ready to capture on b1 and promote to bishop): 2bqkb1r/1ppppppp/2n1R1b1/r7/7P/P7/1PPPPPP1/2B1(Q?)KB1n Playing forward from this position: after 0…BPf7xe6 Black must play 1…B-f7, 2…P-g6, 3…B-g7, 4…B-e5, 5…B-h2 before White can play 6.P-g3 so White needs 5 tempo moves (in the alternative position after 0…BPa2xNb1=B White will need 4 additional tempo moves). 2 of these tempo moves can be Ph4-h5-h6 leaving 3 more. These 3 tempo moves can only be played by WK oscillating between e1 and d1 which proves that WQd1 was captured earlier on d1 and so WQh3 was promoted by WPh2 after capturing [BQd8] (not [BBc8]) on the dark square g7. Either WK plays K-d1, K-e1, K-d1 or else it starts on d1 which implies the move Ke1-d1 had been played earlier.
Going back to retraction from the diagram position: The Black piece captured on h3 by White’s last move (Qh2xh3#) could not be a Knight or Rook (This would require a second Black promotion) or a Queen (BQd8 was captured previously on g7) so it must have been BBc8. After -1.WQh2xBBh3 comes -1…BBg4-h3+ (since WQ was captured on d1 and the other 4 missing White pieces were captured by the BPs, no capture is available on h3) followed by -2.Kh3-g2 Bf3-g4+.

The moves Ke1-d1[1], Kd1-e1, Ke1-d1[2] as well as Kh3-g2 have been shown to be mandatory in any proof game. A minimal move path of the WK would add Kd1-e1[2] (third switchback), Ke1-f1, Kf1-g2, Kg2-h3 turning Kh3-g2 into the fourth switchback. These additional moves are conditional (required only for the move-efficient path) since WK could also get to h3 by exiting via b2,c3 and entering via g4 or h4.
Minimal path of WK: 1.Ke1-d1! 2.Kd1-e1! 3.Ke1-d1! 4.Kd1-e1 5.Ke1-f1 6.Kf1-g2 7.Kg2-h3 8.Kh3-g2! (2017-09-23)
Henrik Juel: Retroplay with eight moves by [Ke1]

Black captured [Dd1] on d1, axbxa2xb1=L, and f7xe6
-1.Dh2xLh3 Lg4 -2.Kh3 Lf3

a) The four pieces which move reveal their colours. So with 2. ... cxb7# delivers check to bK, whichever it turns it to be! All other flight squares are covered by wK, wLb6 & if necessary sSd7.
b) Now wK, wDb8 & (if necessary) sTd7 cover the flight squares.
A.Buchanan: Amazing that this idea can be implemented so cleanly. (2017-09-18)

A.Buchanan: What are the roles of La5 & Ba4?
Has this been proved sound? (Could run 128 h#2, then compare versions which allowed the same mate to see if all versions of unspecified piece support the mate.) (2021-05-18)

Joost de Heer: This is probably Kriegspiel? If there are no black pieces, the knight path on moves 25/26 can go over f6 as well. (2022-10-25)
A.Buchanan: Good catch, Joost. The black units (because of bK) are necessary. I haven’t heard the term Kriegspiel used to describe this. (2022-10-25)
Henrik Juel: This is a series proof game (where only White moves, and he may not check with an intermediate move)
I see no relation to the fairy condition Kriegspiel (2022-10-25)
