Frank Richter: Surprisingly a dual: 3.Df3+ Kg1 4.Dg3+ Kh1 5.Lg2+ Kf1 6.Ld5+ Kf1 7.Dg2+ Ke1 8.Df2+ Kd1 9.Lb3+ Kc1 10.Dxh2 ~ 11.Db2 Lxb2#
So we get with wSg4 a s#9 with 2 solutions. (2009-04-29)
paul: The second "solution" is rather a cook. Will be much better to be avoided. (2022-09-14)
Nightrider: Simple correction: +bPh4 (many other squares for an additional bP are possible and would make the problem correct). C+ Gustav 4.2e.

Nice logical structure: With wQb6, 1.Sf2+ Kg1 2.Sh1+ K:S 3.Qb1+ would be sufficient. The queen could make a staircase walk to b6 if wSe4 were not in the way. Hence 1.Sf2+ Kg1 2.Sg4+ Kh1 to open the queen's way to b6: 3.Qe4+ Kg1 4.Qd4+ Kh1 5.Qd5+ Kg1 6.Qc5+ Kh1 7.Qc6+ Kg1 8.Qb6+ Kh1. Now the wS has been moved, but on its new square (g4) it disturbs even more than before (on e4). Therefore 9.Sf2+ Kg1 10.Sh1+ K:h1 and finally 11.Qb1+ Rg1#. (2023-11-24)

Olaf Jenkner: I tried hard to cook this one and I'm very pleased to see it could be sound. I consider this problem to be the longest correct selfmate.
Congratulations, Mr. Mintz! (2011-11-13)

YM: Before the publication of this S#255 (and previous S#259) has been a candidate for record shorter S#244 (with one of two endings of Karlheinz Bachmann).
Jeremy Morse found a way to extend the problem S#244 in two moves, but because of my original problems with the new endings (cook - problems!) did not published it.
I hope in future joint S#246 would be in publication, like I wanted. (2015-10-14)
YM: Also is possible an oriinal ending! A new idea almost automatically lead to a longer problem - S#270.
...today was sent like correction of s#255. (2015-11-06)
YM: Now the Record position is:

YM: When inputting the problem, there were inaccuracies in the solution starting from the 15th move should be 15. ... Kc1. ...And more and more!

After the 214th move, on behalf of Bachmann, is given Cook: 215. g4, etc. with a dual: 241. Dh4/Dd8 Kb2
Unfortunately, further in the position after the 250th move:
8/6D1/8/K1BD4/4L3/8/b7/b5b1/t1k4l
are some impossible moves... (2022-06-23)
YM: Cook's ending should be 251. Dh6+, not 251. Db6+?? (2022-06-23)

White schreibt in 'Tasks & Echoes': "Here we have another type of consecutive White piece journeys quite different from the Merry-Go-Rounds ... No. 11 is a well placed example of the Staircase theme, though by no means the earliest in date. The White Queen starts from the ground floor of her house, and goes slowly upstairs to the very top. She then throws herself out of the window to the street below, possibly with a view to suicide; and surprises herself as much as anybody else to find that by so doing she has really succeeded in mating her old enemy, the Black King, who has been kicking his heels on the street corner."
In "Tasks & Echos" mit der Forderung '#12' veröffentlicht. Ebenso im Schach-Echo 1936.

Weiterer Nachdruck in "Mitchell's Guide to the game of chess" (1915, S.81)
