Henrik Juel: The intention may be 1.dxc3ep 2.Kxb5xc6-d7-e8 6.0-0 Rh8#, but -1.Kb2 seems possible. Should bBc1 be moved to a3? (2003-04-28)
GW: Yes, that's the solution, and the problem seems indeed to be cooked. I don't know if it has been corrected. (2003-04-28)
James Malcom: I believe that the intent was that the sLc1 must be the orginal one, and thus an impediment to wK foreplay, as the wBc6 "must" have captured the e7 Black pawn on its way from f2. The problem is that it can take the alternative path fxsLf3xDe3xTc5-c6, and there are enough White pieces to capture for the Black b pawn to make it d2 and for the d pawn to make it to c2. (2021-09-14)
James Malcom: It turns out this problem actually was corrected a long time later: P1012052 (2021-09-14)

Max J. Meyer in 'Brighton and Hove Society', 1904: "It will be seen that the ideas of these two problems [dieses und P1143870] are the same. The addition of the White B. enables Mr. Mackenzie to get a much better key for this position, a point in which Steinweg's problem does not excel; but, of course, the use of an extra piece renders the miniature less remarkable from the point of view of smallness in size."

Rosalie Fay: R: 1. 0-0 b2-b1=B 2. d2-d3 c3xb2. What did the bP capture? A wQ or wR doesn't leave White a previous move; a wP makes an illegal wP structure, so wB or wN.

bK got into the SW cage via a3. When bK was on a3, [wPb2] was on b3, and [wPa2] was on a2. So these wPs did not cross-capture. wQ cannot have been in the cage at the time, because, if it were, bK could not get in without walking into check from wQ. So when wQ entered the cage, bK was already in. wQ must have entered via a1 or b2. To avoid giving an unparriable check, wQ must've moved to a1 with bKc1 and a shield on b1.

But this shield doesn't have to be the piece captured on b2 by the promoting bP. Why not

1.Rc1-b2 0-0;
1.Rc2-b2 e6xf6 e.p. 2.f7-f5 Tg6-a6+;
1.a2-a1F.
(Quartz 4/1997) (2010-03-22)
Henrik Juel: For the benefit of readers, whose French is a bit rusty:
Paul points out that the retroplay given on top is incorrect. Ph4 is [Pf7] who captured the dark-squared [Lc1] on its way to h4; so its latest move was g5xh4, not h5-h4. (2010-03-26)
Paulo Roque: Henrik:
Not R: 1.h5-h4. See also that [Pa7] was promoted in the square a1, at some point. But I think also possible Ph4 is [Ph7], by: h7xg6-g5xh4 or h7-h6xg5xh4 (2010-03-27)
Henrik Juel: You are right, Paulo; my mistake, not Paul's. I should have written: Ph4 is [Pf7] or [Ph7], who captured the dark-squared [Lc1] on its way to h4; so its latest move was g5xh4, not h5-h4. (2010-03-27)

Seule reste le dernier coup blanc 0... c2-c4 Ceci implique que le FNb1 est issue de promtion ! C'est le PNb7, il aurait pris 2 pièces blanches. Les PNg5 et h5 ont pris 2 pièces blanches.

James Malcom: I see nothing wrong with fiddling if it improves economy. (2020-05-11)
A.Buchanan: If promotion to Bl unit is allowed, can’t Bl just have played e8xd7+ or g8xh7+? Can replace bPd7 with bR but eliminating bPh7 is more complicated. Need +wPh7 +bPg6h6. And also bRb7 to prevent discovered check by bPc8 prior to e7-e8=bK. I think that’s watertight now! :-) (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: The issue is that there are two or three levels of Bl promotion joke: this problem relies on the "basic" joke where black officers can be created. But where's the line to stop us promoting to Bl pawn or king? If we go that far, then a position like this 2kr3K/1r1r1qrR/7p/8/8/8/8/8 is required.
