A.Buchanan: 1) We really need a better way to tag individual solutions. The comma normally separates phases e.g. promotion(S,T), and we should logically extend this. If there is a parameter, then this can be done elegantly as e.g. promotion(,T), but if there is no parameter, then what to do? Maybe e.g. "model mate(@,)" What do you think?
2) Proliferation of keywords is all very clever, but until they are populated, they are useless, and overlapping ones without an overall plan are very counter-productive. So here we see *four* over-specialized keywords for discovered checks. It's not trivial to fix, so please let's not dig the hole any deeper.
3) Under-promotion is only meaningful for direct mates and studies (and even there is redundant with parameters). I will always remove it in help & self compositions if I comes to my attention, and ultimately hope Gerd can run some script to replace all inappropriate occurrences.
4) Please can someone provide descriptions for Selfblock and Tschumakow.
Thanks so much! :D (2021-03-06)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Definitions of Self-block and Chumakov:
http://helpman.komtera.lt/definition/Self-block
http://helpman.komtera.lt/definition/Chumakov_theme (2021-03-06)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for these definitions. In the end, PDB should have automatic discovery of as many keyword assignments as possible, like Helpmate Analyzer and WinChloe do today. Gerd is just beginning to explore this for very simple stuff, but it presupposes for most keywords that the solutions are known.
Selfblock: "The opposite side takes advantage of it." What does this mean exactly in the context of help stipulations, or where the non-mating K is blocked?
Chumakov/Tschumakow Theme:
The qualifiers "basic" & "simplified" are misleading. The underlying weakness is a failure to name the atom of Chumakov: a single unit which behaves differently in different phases. So-called "basic" is really "doubled", and so-called "simplified" is "symmetric".
"Belfort" suffers from the same refusal to identify the singular, and only accept talking in plurals. The Belfort Theme in some random tourney a long time ago was defined on more than one piece exhibiting the property, but one really wants to talk of a Belfort piece, even though a single Belfort piece is nothing to celebrate. But from a *naming* point of view, we should have it. (2021-03-07)
Viktoras Paliulionis: This definition of selfblock is generic. In the case of a helpmate, it is important that the piece that moved to the king's field is actually needed in the mating position as a blocker. Otherwise, if the king’s field is guarded by White, then the move to this field is not a selfblock, the motive for such move may be, for example, line-closing or hideaway (the piece could be removed in the final position without affecting the mate).
Selfblocking can also occur in White's play, but only as a negative effect (AntiZielElement) followed by an unblocking (selfblock/unblock). (2021-03-08)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Only the first form is the real theme of Chumakov. Such a definition of the theme is found in most sources. Additionally, the theme can have a double form (2+2), (3+3) or even (4+4).
The second interpretation of the theme also is used, but actually it is a different theme, it is just an exchange of functions (captured/selfblock). This is a simpler theme to implement, that's why I called it "simplified Chumakov". (2021-03-10)
Yuri Bilokin: Currently there is no Chumakov topic in this problem (2022-05-04)
