Yuri Bilokin: Correction: wRh4-h5 8/8/5k2/7R/6n1/8/5B2/5K2 (3+2) (2021-04-16)
A.Buchanan: I don't know what to do here. Clearly we can't disrupt the rook square, so maybe +sBf3 is best as Yuri proposes (2021-04-16)
Yuri Bilokin: It is necessary to decide what is better to break the rook square or the Ideal mate. (2021-04-16)
A.Buchanan: Ideal mates are cheap, but Th4-h3-g3xg4-h4# is a prize. (2021-04-17)
SCHRECKE: why not: +bPh3? (2021-04-17)
A.Buchanan: @SCHRECKE because the rook's movement in a square should not be motivated by capturing, and +sBh3 also blocks wT unnecessarily from h1 & h2. This problem does not appear in WinChloe, at least not in Canadian Chess Chat under this author (who has 891 total compositions - not gone through them all). Maybe he never fixed it. One clean idea is to replace wKf1 with sBg2. This is still an ideal mate. Then put +wKa1 if you must :-) (2021-04-17)
A.Buchanan: +sBg2 & wKa1 is sound, but maybe best to rotate the board as sB threatening to promote is perhaps unfairly distracting to solvers (2021-04-18)
Olaf Jenkner: Is it not a merit? (2021-04-18)
Yuri Bilokin: Correction: wKh1, wRf3, wBd1, bKd5, bBe1, bSe3 8/8/8/3k4/8/4nR2/8/3Bb2K (3+3)
1...Rf2 2.Ke4 Re2 3.Kf3 Rxe3+ 4.Kf2 Rf3# (IM) (2021-04-18)
Adrian Storisteanu: Or, finally, a variation which uses just a bP (not bB) as Andrew suggested, and still makes use of the wK (as does Yuri's):
Bg6 Rd3 Kf1 / Kb5 Sd4 Pf4 (3+3)
1...Re3 2.Kc4 Re4 3.Kd3 Rxd4+ 4.Ke3 Rd3# (2021-04-18)
Adrian Storisteanu: Or, more centred:
Bb7 Re4 Kc2 / Kg6 Pc5 Se5 (3+3)
1...Rd4 2.Kf5 Rd5 3.Ke4 Rxe5+ 4.Kd4 Re4# (2021-04-18)
Adrian Storisteanu: (In the latest, a bPe5 -- instead of bSe5 -- is just as good...) (2021-04-19)
A.Buchanan: Busy - will check these later. But Adrian I didn’t suggest bB but sB i.e. (German) black pawn not bishop (2021-04-19)
Adrian Storisteanu: I understood you fine (but I might have misplaced the text in parentheses). (2021-04-19)
A.Buchanan: With your latest Bb7 Re4 Kc2 / Kg6 Pc5e5, once might as well remove the two black pawns and replace with wPd6 (then rotating the board by 180 degrees). But surely this is not original, and indeed P0510694 by Ugren achieves full h#4. But Yuri has already corrected P0503631 by Krikehli to achieve the same thing! Time to give up - nothing new here. If it's not acceptable, then maybe there has to be e.g. bSd8 & wDe8, so can have discovered check dxe8=S+. Would need some way to prevent dxe8=L though, so pull apart the constellation around wK. I have some ideas, but no engine to validate and not clever enough to analyze it myself :D (2021-01-13)

Habe ich da wirklich was übersehen? (2013-04-23)
Vorschlag an Olaf: Du hast ja 1.Sg2+ Kf3 2.Sxe1+ Kf4 3.Sxd3+ Kf3 4.Lxe2+ Kg2 5.Txb2 schon widerlegt.

Nochmals danke! (2019-11-10)
James Malcom: The task is surely not kaputt. Entering the FEN into Stockfish analysis yields the solution very quickly: https://lichess.org/analysis/6n1/p2r2P1/3N3p/1P1KR2n/3p1k1N/3r2pP/1p2p3/1R1Bb3_w_-_-_0_1 (2021-04-18)

Henrik Juel: The award in Die Schwalbe, Heft 296, April 2019, p.80 has Pa4 on a5 and Ph4 on h3
This entry seems to come from a french source, where the authors may have made the change, which probably makes little difference
It should be marked as a version (2021-04-21)
Henrik Juel: Counting the black moves (from a8, b8, etc.) yields
2+1+3+2+3+3+3+4 + 2+1+1+1+1+2 = 29, including a long castling
Only 7 white moves are visible, but this is increased to 8, because White must move e2-e3-e5 to make room for [Lc8]
Where are the remaining 22 white moves? They are used for an incredible record round-trip by Th1, who must screen on b7 to permit the castling

Objective: fastest Staugaard (Pam-Krabbé) + another castling (happens to be kside)
A.Buchanan: Now we know more about Conrad Staugaard and his life, I enthusiastically agree with Henrik's earlier suggestion that we change this theme to be "Staugaard", which would also align with WinChloe. I can make necessary changes in PDB as a batch, and retain also "Pam-Krabbe" as a deprecated keyword, pointing to Staugaard. Pam & Krabbé are famous already, and only popularized Staugaard's funny idea. Any objections? (2021-05-08)
Henrik Juel: No... (2021-05-08)
Rainer Staudte: I agree to renaming. (2021-05-08)
A.Buchanan: OK thank you: I've made the move. Please check the definitions, and let me know anything that needs changing (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Very good, Andrew; the Staugaard fan club (both of us) thanks you
You might want to add that after a white Staugaard castling, wK is on e3 and promoted wR is on e2
I wonder whether the solution notation should be changed to 0-0-0-0-0 with 5 zeroes, so that the number of zeroes is one less than the length of the rook displacement for all three castlings (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Forget my very last remark, please
Short and long castling has rook displacement = number of zeroes,
so Staugaard should remain with 6 zeroes, of course (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Ok listed the target squares as requested. (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Curious that this economy record must begin with a tempo move (2021-05-20)
A.Buchanan: Staugaard seems a much better basis than Chess960 for further generalization of castling. Basically move an unchecked royal king 2 unattacked square towards the rook, and the rook hops the otherside. This works whatever the gap between the two. This is more similar to rokagogo.
