"Again two solutions – with black rook pinned in the diagram position and four promotions of two white pawns. Unfortunately, the author failed to achieve Allumwandlung – promotion of pawns to all four possible types of pieces: QRBS."

James Malcom: How do you add in the author name exactly? It's Gyula Breyer. After about a month of not using my editing powers, here is the first problem I have chosen to enter in! I will be adding more joke promotion problems in here soon and classify them a little bit more. (2020-01-28)
Mario Richter: Fritz 6 gives
1. exf8=N+ Kxf8 2. Kd7 Ng5 3. Nc6 Bxe6+ 4. fxe6 Nxe6 5. Kxe6 Rg8 6. Nxd8 f5 7. Kf6 Rg6+ 8. Bxg6 hxg6 9. Ne6+ Ke8 10. Kxg6 f4 11. exf4 exf4 12. Nxf4
as a win for White (+7.44)
Can somebody with a stronger chess program find a better defense for Black? (2020-02-11)
James Malcom: It seems that 2. Kd7! is the one move that cooks this problem. The Black knight can’t move to release Black’s pieces as then Black will lose their bishop. 2. Nd7+ merely draws. (2020-02-12)
Peter Wong: Not only is there a cook, but the intention doesn't seem to work either. If you manually set up the position after 1.exf8=black queen for the Stockfish engine, it finds no clear win for White. (2020-02-12)
James Malcom: Well in the intention, if 1... Be7? then 2. Kc7 Qg7 3. Nxe4 Qg2 4. Nd6+ Kf8 5. Nd7+ Kg7 6. Ne8#. It's only after 1... Qe7 2. Nd7 Qex6 3. fxe6 Ke7 does it become a draw. It seems that all known tasks with White promoting to a Black queen are cooked. It should not be surprising, but it is indeed sad. Not even Bengston's draw study P1372297 is correct. It shouldn't be to hard to make a new, correct draw study, whether or not it's based on Bengston's work, but now a winning one seems further elusive as this seems to be the only way work of it's kind. (2020-02-13)
SP: After "1... Qe7 2. Nd7 Qex6 3. fxe6 Ke7" instead of a draw there is a mate in 5:
4.Sf5+ Ke6: 5.Lg4 Sd6,Sg5 6.Sc5+ & 7.Lh5+ or
4.-- Ke8 5.Kb7 (6.Kc8 & 7.e7) etc.
Did you perhaps mean 3.-- Le7? Breyer intended 4.Kc7: for that.

Three trys by different white pions fail on three different escapes of the black king from the corner.
In the solution, two completely different matt images: one on the edge, which ends with pattern matt, and one surprisingly in the middle of the board.

A.Buchanan: 1) We really need a better way to tag individual solutions. The comma normally separates phases e.g. promotion(S,T), and we should logically extend this. If there is a parameter, then this can be done elegantly as e.g. promotion(,T), but if there is no parameter, then what to do? Maybe e.g. "model mate(@,)" What do you think?
2) Proliferation of keywords is all very clever, but until they are populated, they are useless, and overlapping ones without an overall plan are very counter-productive. So here we see *four* over-specialized keywords for discovered checks. It's not trivial to fix, so please let's not dig the hole any deeper.
3) Under-promotion is only meaningful for direct mates and studies (and even there is redundant with parameters). I will always remove it in help & self compositions if I comes to my attention, and ultimately hope Gerd can run some script to replace all inappropriate occurrences.
4) Please can someone provide descriptions for Selfblock and Tschumakow.
Thanks so much! :D (2021-03-06)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Definitions of Self-block and Chumakov:
http://helpman.komtera.lt/definition/Self-block
http://helpman.komtera.lt/definition/Chumakov_theme (2021-03-06)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for these definitions. In the end, PDB should have automatic discovery of as many keyword assignments as possible, like Helpmate Analyzer and WinChloe do today. Gerd is just beginning to explore this for very simple stuff, but it presupposes for most keywords that the solutions are known.
Selfblock: "The opposite side takes advantage of it." What does this mean exactly in the context of help stipulations, or where the non-mating K is blocked?
Chumakov/Tschumakow Theme:
The qualifiers "basic" & "simplified" are misleading. The underlying weakness is a failure to name the atom of Chumakov: a single unit which behaves differently in different phases. So-called "basic" is really "doubled", and so-called "simplified" is "symmetric".

"Belfort" suffers from the same refusal to identify the singular, and only accept talking in plurals. The Belfort Theme in some random tourney a long time ago was defined on more than one piece exhibiting the property, but one really wants to talk of a Belfort piece, even though a single Belfort piece is nothing to celebrate. But from a *naming* point of view, we should have it. (2021-03-07)
Viktoras Paliulionis: This definition of selfblock is generic. In the case of a helpmate, it is important that the piece that moved to the king's field is actually needed in the mating position as a blocker. Otherwise, if the king’s field is guarded by White, then the move to this field is not a selfblock, the motive for such move may be, for example, line-closing or hideaway (the piece could be removed in the final position without affecting the mate).
Selfblocking can also occur in White's play, but only as a negative effect (AntiZielElement) followed by an unblocking (selfblock/unblock). (2021-03-08)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Only the first form is the real theme of Chumakov. Such a definition of the theme is found in most sources. Additionally, the theme can have a double form (2+2), (3+3) or even (4+4).
The second interpretation of the theme also is used, but actually it is a different theme, it is just an exchange of functions (captured/selfblock). This is a simpler theme to implement, that's why I called it "simplified Chumakov". (2021-03-10)
Yuri Bilokin: Currently there is no Chumakov topic in this problem (2022-05-04)

Record task of 7 Black rook promotions in a selfmate
Previous record: P1225124
Henrik Juel: Very impressive, James
Black needs to post a promoted rook on g1 again and again to prevent the threat 2.Sg5+ T7xg5#
A promoted queen does not work, because of 2... Dxg5#
You should label it C+, despite the possible duals in short variations, I think (2023-06-03)
James Malcom: Thanks.
Labeled as intended, now.
This task took over two years to realize: http://superproblem.ru/archive/Labor/Malcom-S.html (2023-06-03)
