paul: Compare with P0002278 & P0002279 (2010-04-30)
Mu-Tsun Tsai: This one is by far the toughest retro I've ever solved. Very little certain information can be determined by structural consideration alone, even with long and complicated argument. It took me five days to complete solving this. (2012-07-22)
A.Buchanan: @Mu-Tsun: that's an interesting data point - thanks for posting. (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: The current record is 58.5 moves in a proof game problem by the authors + Keym, Die Schwalbe 2017 (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: I just learned that the 58.5 move proof game has been cooked... (2017-09-07)
A.Buchanan: In retrospect, my earlier comment about "interesting data point" is a bit weak. It's actually great that for such an extreme problem, someone took substantial time to independently validate it. It's like doing science: people want to do their own new stuff, and are unwilling to take the time to validate what's already been claimed. This one has survived 30+ years, and maybe the use of constraints e.g. in Jacobi can eventually allow it to be HC+. (2021-05-29)
Olaf Jenkner: This problem is the current record, because P1338946 (58.5 moves) has been cooked. (2021-11-25)
Reto: This is C+ up to 51.0 moves with Stelvio 2.0. This ties the record for partial testing of an SPG. Took 1200 CPU hours of strategy seeking (finding 378 0+0 strategies) and another 13h of strategy playing these strategies. If this can ever be completely solved, then it needs to be the case that all strategies have 0+0 free moves, otherwise playing is utterly hopeless.
@Andrew: There is absolutely no way a brute-force based program like Jacobi ever stands a chance at solving something like this, no matter how many conditions you add. (2023-12-14)

Kd8-e8 c2xDb3
Henrik Juel: A possible retroplay is -1... g7 -2.f3xP(-Pg7) b5 -3.f2 c6xP(-Pb2) -4.b2 a6 -5.Rc3 a7 -6.Rc1 b6xB -7.Bf8 b7 -8.Bg7xB etc. (2003-04-22)
Michel Caillaud: The problem is not cooked as indicated, as under A Posteriori convention both castles must be played in the solution to justify the en passant key. (2022-02-04)
A.Buchanan: If wK never moved, then Black has not just moved another non-capturing pawn, as White has no prior move. The only possible exception is R: 1. g7-g5 f/h3xPg4[+Pg7]. (2022-02-04)

Black needs a tempo to get on move, and the only piece to do that is Th8, so 0-0 is illegal. (2010-06-20)
Mario Richter: The term usually used to describe this kind of problems is "Parity problem". The bRh8 might have been on h8 all the time, since the tempo move might also have been made by the black Queen, but in this case, the bK must have already moved, thereby losing the right to castle too.. (2010-06-21)
Ladislav Packa: You both are right. Black would be in this position made an uneven number moves.
This can be achieved by using Rook moves (eg Rg8-f8-h8), or by the Queen moves while she was still alive (eg Kf8-g8, then Qf8-e8-d8 and then the King back). But both possibilities preventing black castling. (2013-10-04)
A.Buchanan: Parity change could also be achieved without triangulation by e.g. SxDe8 after the black queen has moved once (2022-03-15)

Henrik Juel: something is wrong here: the claimed mates are not even checks
also, the stipulation should probably be something like
Black and White retract, then #1 (2021-04-30)
A.Buchanan: Yes the problem was the word "dann" which indicates help retractor. The retro is just justification for the forward moves, showing that the relevant fairy piece existed earlier in the game so can be promoted to. What's the name of that principle? (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the clarification, Andrew
I think that this principle should remain unnamed and just stay in the joke realm (2021-05-01)
A.Buchanan: Sorry not to be clear: I am talking about the standard fairy principle that if you want to promote to a Princess, there should be one on the problem diagram. Not talking about the joke extension which riffs off this. I thought this was called "Bartel Theme", but it turns out that is something different. (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: I see; that principle probably was established soon after the invention of grasshoppers and nightriders
I do not think it has a name, but it is so well established that it should be in the Codex (2021-05-01)

Gerd Wilts (2001-10-17): The retro play given in the solution serves only to justify that it may indeed be White's turn. The forward play indeed starts with 1. Bf7. The idea of TRD was to compose a problem which is legal but in which one of the knights must be a promoted pawn. TRD called this an "obtrusive Knight".

Mario Richter: Henrik, I think certainty about the correctness of this problem can be achieved, if we take into account that Black's last move must have been a capture. (2018-12-10)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: the times you propose for testing don't seem outrageous, even without Mario's sensible heuristic. Also, the last move must have been DxLd7 from one of 5 squares only. (2018-12-12)
Reto: Stelvio is now able to retract moves and solve the resulting problems individually. That helps a lot here, but still, the 5 reasonable last move retractions took over 13h in total to solve. (2023-06-11)

If Black could castle, both parts would be cooked:

But he cannot, because explaining wTh7 by h7-h8=T would require nine white pawn captures, and only eight black men are missing; hxg8=T is even worse, requiring 10 captures (Th7 being original or promoted further towards the west obviously would require Ke8 to have moved) (2021-07-04)

Zero - the position is legal.
A.Buchanan: Isn't this a legal position? In each of the 4 pairs of adjacent files, one cross-capture suffices. So a total of 8 captures is necessary, with up to 14 available. (2022-03-17)
Henrik Juel: Yes, any master of the 20 bishops problem can see that the position is legal
The diagram must be wrong (2022-03-17)

A.Buchanan: In each of the 4 pairs of adjacent files, one cross-capture suffices. So removing 8 officers is enough. However, they need to be an even number from each side.
However it's possible to do better by removing pawns: wPadgh bPcf = 6 units. Now wPaxb bPcxb wPdxe bPfxe.
Is it possible with 5 or less? (2022-03-17)
Bob Baker: I find it interesting that the composer specified piece removals, since six captures suffice. Does that imply that 5 or less is possible by removing pieces? (2023-04-27)
A.Buchanan: I think the German term "Figuren" (like the English "pieces") can have two senses, either all 16 pieces or just the officers. Wikipidie.ge uses the phrase "im engeren Sinne" = "in the narrower sense" to distinguish. But maybe a native German speaker can be more authoritative here:

- acht Bauern (2023-04-27)
A.Buchanan: And the Originaldforderung would have been in French, surely (2023-04-27)
Bob Baker: A stipulation might have been "Reach the position with the greatest number of pieces still on the board." A position with six fewer men can be reached with no removals from the initial array. It would be a harder problem than if pieces can just be taken off the board. But maybe allowing removals could make 5 or less possible. (2023-04-28)
A.Buchanan: Not quite sure what you are saying. Generally, capturing pawns is more efficient than capturing officers to get pawns past one another, but here we have no doubled pawns. If we have a solution with 5 units including a missing officer, then might as well promote a pawn to replace it. So we can reduce our search to positions where 5 pawns have been removed (2023-04-28)
Bob Baker: I'm suggesting if six really is the answer, it would be a better (more challenging) problem to require a proof game with no removals except by capturing. (2023-04-28)
Bob Baker: Also, I think this may have been the composer's intent, but the stipulation was misunderstood as allowing pieces to be taken off the board without being captured. (2023-04-28)
Bob Baker: I just realized that the misunderstanding of the composer's intent was on my part, so all my previous comments should be disregarded. (2023-04-28)
Carot: I understand that all 16+16 figures are meant.
So for the e-row 1. e4 e5 2. e4f5 e5f4 3. f5e6 f4f3
This is illegal, so only the e-line is considered, one e-pawn too many to reach the given position legally.

I am just a beginner in Chess, but i think en passant is useable and therefore maybe less then 8 pieces have to removed, but i tried an hour and found no way for optimisation. :(..

I would be happy about an idea. Please share. I go study pawn endgames now.
I am happy to found this site and many old combinations of Max Lange. (2023-04-28)

James Malcom: How is the key here justified? (2021-01-18)
James Malcom: I am still pondering. (2021-09-14)
Henrik Juel: James, I have forgotten all about this weird stipulation during the time since my last comment, and I don't know what I meant so say...
The definition of shc in the PDB is not complete; here is the Schwalbe definition:
Konsequenter Serienzüger: Ein Serienzüger, bei dem nach jedem Zug die Retroanalyse der Stellung neu durchgeführt wird (also ohne Kenntnis früherer Züge und Analysen). Beispielsweise wird eine Rochade wieder möglich, wenn König und Rochadeturm auf ihre entsprechenden Felder ziehen (weil in der neuen Analyse "vergessen" ist, dass beide bereits gezogen haben).
In english, something like
After each move the analysis of the position is done afresh, without knowledge of previous moves;
for instance, castling is possible when king and rook reach their original squares (e8 and a8), because it is 'forgotten' that they have already moved (2021-09-14)
Henrik Juel: You ask for a justification of the key, James; there is no need for justification, Black can do whatever he likes
In the position after 1.a1=S last move must have been g2-g4, so the ep capture 2.fxg3ep is legitimized
In the position after 2.fxg3ep last move must have been Ke3xPf3, with the double check being explained by exf3ep++; this is the 'hidden ep capture' I mentioned in my youthful comment (2021-09-14)
James Malcom: Thanks Henri! While the definition is incomplete, the reset each time is deducible from looking over shc problems. The justification here, however, was a level above me somehow. (2021-09-14)

A.Buchanan: The final position in Kees' solution has wTf6 which must be promoted. This could have been wBb, which captured e.g. bBa5, bBb6 e.p., bLa7, bSb8.
wTf7 is also promoted, and might be sBh having capturing wBg5, wBh6 e.p., wLg2, wTh1. sBfxLg6 completes the picture. I don't see any difficult captures e.g. of S remaining, so the position looks to be legal. (2022-02-16)

Wh has made 6 visible pawn captures, Bl 1. If bPfxg, then bPh was waylaid, and bPe promoted, disrupting White's castling rights. If Wh 000 rights remain, therefore, bPhxg and bPe was waylaid instead. Since original g-pawns remain on g-file, they must be wPg3 & bPg4, and wPh must retract a double hop to allow bPh3xg2. So Black can ep, avoiding immediate pat. To castle then mate requires a lot of work.
A.Buchanan: Popeye v4.87 finds 11 solutions to h004.5 following the mandatory ep. Only one of them can be followed by h#1. Any cook therefore would have to be of the form 6. ... 000# Searching now for h005.5, as can then easily check if there are any mates (2022-06-10)

A.Buchanan: Hi there are over 110,000 ways to reach 6. 000, but *none* of them are also checkmate. Therefore I am happy to pronounce this problem sound. Happy, because (1) it deserves to be ok (2) I couldn't face trying to fix it. If White 000 rights remain, then the last move was certainly h2-h4. Orthodoxically, we cannot perform the e.p. but under the AP Type Petrovic we can ep, as long as we justify it with castling later in the game. Hurray! (2022-06-12)
A.Buchanan: 1. gxh3ep Sxb3#? fails because White never castles to justify the ep. It's like there is an additional check before granting that a position is checkmate or stalemate: have all AP debts been paid? If not, the move is illegal because the game would end with no chance to repay the AP debt later. Yes it's weird but that's AP. (2022-06-13)

S: Bfxg, Bdxcxb, Bexdxcxb, Bbxa

Nach 1. Kf7? oder 1. Kf8 2. Kg7 3.
Henrik Juel (PDB 2021-09-15): This is one of the few shc#'s without ep capture and/or castling
Henrik Juel: I don't agree entirely with you comment, James; this seems clearer:
1.Kf7? does not work, because now White has no last move ([Th1] was captured by a pawn)
1.Kf8 2.Kg7 3.Kg6? fails for the same reason
After 5.c1=S 6.Kf7 last move was h3-h4 or h2-h4
This is one of the few shc#'s without ep capture and/or castling (2021-09-15)
James Malcom: Henrik, what comment of mine? I merely edit swapped some text. (2021-09-15)
Henrik Juel: OK, so it was probably Gerd who wrote it in 1998; the early updates are no longer available, when you click on 'more...'
The german text roughly translates to:
Pg6xh7 happened before Kf7-e8, so first one of the black pawns must be eliminated by promotion.
I still like my comment better... (2021-09-15)

A.Buchanan: I think Yuri's correction works in both twins, and is more economical than Adrian's. However in a) the line d8-d5 must be closed for the mate to work, so sTd8 is thematic. This consideration is not actually necessary for soundness though, which is why Yuri's sTe8 is sound! So sTd8 is a total weasel in both twins! (2020-11-25)

A.Buchanan: According to WinChloe, 8/8/5p2/8/1n2pp1p/1p1prn1k/1Pp3bp/KB4rq was a 1998 repair by Chris Feather himself, but Yuri's fix is more economical: bravo! (2021-03-04)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Correction: P0577628. Capturing a pawn is better than capturing a bishop. In the Yuri's version bSb4 can be changed with bPd5. (2021-03-05)
A.Buchanan: Hi Viktoras, thanks for this. Taken in isolation, capturing a pawn is of course better than capturing a bishop, but is it worth an extra cook-blocker on the board? The problem to compare with CJF's fix is your version 8/8/8/3p4/4bp1p/1p1prn1k/1Pp3pp/KB4rq 3+14, with a knight less. Personally, I might actively prefer that Le4 has another role as well as being a blocker, but maybe this isn't the common view. If Le4 moved around, I might have a different opinion. Does CJF opine on this point in "Black to move?" (2021-03-05)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Capturing of black guarding piece is always looks rude (bB guards the mating square), in addition, we get double motivation for the move. CJF justifies even two completely unnecessary white pawns on the board to emphasize the idea. (see 167). For 143, he suggests a less economical position to make motivation cleaner. (2021-03-05)

A.Buchanan: This nice simple puzzle can be repaired by replacing pawn c5 with rook (C+). As often with cooks in PDB, one wonders if it's just a typo. I have an old email address of Ronald's, and I may ask him. (2012-02-20)
A.Buchanan: I met Ronald for dinner last year (it seems like a vanished age!) in Norwich, UK. He was there for a mountaineer's conference. The climbers selected Norwich as their venue for humorous reasons as it's in the flattest area of Britain. We discussed a bunch of compositions, including this one. He agreed it was cooked and agreed with my suggested fix, which I will post in a separate entry. Very nice chap - he doesn't compose much these days because he can get a bigger audience (and more money) from writing hill-walking books. My hill-walking friends say he's a good writer. (2020-12-08)
