The colored position has black Ta1,h1 and Pb5,g6, and white Ta7,h8, otherwise 'natural' (2018-12-07)
François Labelle: Henrik, did you really test all 2^30 possible colorings with Natch, or did you use human deductions to reduce the possibilities (making this HC+), or did you only test the intended coloring (making this a partial C+)? (2018-12-09)
Mario Richter: I do not think that it is necessary to check all 2^30 colorings, since the color of the pawns on files c,d,e and f is completely determined. This and more restrictions on the set of potentially possible colorings may be derived from insights presented in an article "Aggregierte Schlagbilanz" by Frolkin & Kornilov, feenschach 130, p.411ff. Since the mechanisms presented there can at least partially be implemented in a little computer program, even a "full C+" label for this problem is not out of reach ... (2018-12-10)
Henrik Juel: I only tested the intended coloring, Francois,
so the C+ label is not justifiable
In the other coloring proof games I write something like
The colored position was C+ by Natch

Mario is right, of course, in that not all colorings need testing; but still the number is very large
This genre is somewhat messy; at first I thought that the solver could determine the coloring, but this is clearly not the case; also, the intention is not

paul: Compare with P0002278 & P0002279 (2010-04-30)
Mu-Tsun Tsai: This one is by far the toughest retro I've ever solved. Very little certain information can be determined by structural consideration alone, even with long and complicated argument. It took me five days to complete solving this. (2012-07-22)
A.Buchanan: @Mu-Tsun: that's an interesting data point - thanks for posting. (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: The current record is 58.5 moves in a proof game problem by the authors + Keym, Die Schwalbe 2017 (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: I just learned that the 58.5 move proof game has been cooked... (2017-09-07)
A.Buchanan: In retrospect, my earlier comment about "interesting data point" is a bit weak. It's actually great that for such an extreme problem, someone took substantial time to independently validate it. It's like doing science: people want to do their own new stuff, and are unwilling to take the time to validate what's already been claimed. This one has survived 30+ years, and maybe the use of constraints e.g. in Jacobi can eventually allow it to be HC+. (2021-05-29)
Olaf Jenkner: This problem is the current record, because P1338946 (58.5 moves) has been cooked. (2021-11-25)
Reto: This is C+ up to 51.0 moves with Stelvio 2.0. This ties the record for partial testing of an SPG. Took 1200 CPU hours of strategy seeking (finding 378 0+0 strategies) and another 13h of strategy playing these strategies. If this can ever be completely solved, then it needs to be the case that all strategies have 0+0 free moves, otherwise playing is utterly hopeless.
@Andrew: There is absolutely no way a brute-force based program like Jacobi ever stands a chance at solving something like this, no matter how many conditions you add. (2023-12-14)

A.Buchanan: AP Type Petrovic is a try, because wLc1 was captured at home, yet Black still made 6 pawn captures.
AP Type Keym is the actual solution, because if it was really BTM, then White would have lost castling rights.
So there are two kinds of AP here. (2022-03-21)

Henrik Juel: Black makes 15 captures.
The first 13.0 moves are correct by Euclide 1.0, but it takes some 4 minutes, so a complete test would probably take more than a day (2014-12-09)

So we may never know for sure whether this proof game with 16 oscillations by Ta8 is correct (2018-12-08)
Mario Richter: Henrik, I think certainty about the correctness of this problem can be achieved, if we take into account that Black's last move must have been a capture. (2018-12-10)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: the times you propose for testing don't seem outrageous, even without Mario's sensible heuristic. Also, the last move must have been DxLd7 from one of 5 squares only. (2018-12-12)
Reto: Stelvio is now able to retract moves and solve the resulting problems individually. That helps a lot here, but still, the 5 reasonable last move retractions took over 13h in total to solve. (2023-06-11)

James Malcom: How is the key here justified? (2021-01-18)
James Malcom: I am still pondering. (2021-09-14)
Henrik Juel: James, I have forgotten all about this weird stipulation during the time since my last comment, and I don't know what I meant so say...
The definition of shc in the PDB is not complete; here is the Schwalbe definition:
Konsequenter Serienzüger: Ein Serienzüger, bei dem nach jedem Zug die Retroanalyse der Stellung neu durchgeführt wird (also ohne Kenntnis früherer Züge und Analysen). Beispielsweise wird eine Rochade wieder möglich, wenn König und Rochadeturm auf ihre entsprechenden Felder ziehen (weil in der neuen Analyse "vergessen" ist, dass beide bereits gezogen haben).
In english, something like
After each move the analysis of the position is done afresh, without knowledge of previous moves;
for instance, castling is possible when king and rook reach their original squares (e8 and a8), because it is 'forgotten' that they have already moved (2021-09-14)
Henrik Juel: You ask for a justification of the key, James; there is no need for justification, Black can do whatever he likes
In the position after 1.a1=S last move must have been g2-g4, so the ep capture 2.fxg3ep is legitimized
In the position after 2.fxg3ep last move must have been Ke3xPf3, with the double check being explained by exf3ep++; this is the 'hidden ep capture' I mentioned in my youthful comment (2021-09-14)
James Malcom: Thanks Henri! While the definition is incomplete, the reset each time is deducible from looking over shc problems. The justification here, however, was a level above me somehow. (2021-09-14)

play all play one stop play next play all
Guus Rol: This is apparently AP after Keym. The move goes to black:
0. ... f5! 1.gxf6ep exf6 2.0-0(justifies the handover) f5 3.Tf3 (2007-02-13)
A.Buchanan: There are two kinds of directmate Type Keym. In one Black unsuccessfully pulls the move, in the other (as here) White successfully pushes it to Black. (2022-04-16)
A.Buchanan: I disagree with the German comment in the solution text. I think including "AP" is advisable in the stipulation. Keym AP riffs off Codex Article 15, but it's not the default. (2022-04-17)

Back then PB had six issues per year, numbered 1-6 for each year (unlike Die Schwalbe), so the issue number contains little information

Wo wurden die sSS geschlagen?
Korrekturversion zu P1390921, erschienen in der 'Schwalbe', Heft 205 (02/2004), S. 371
Henrik Juel: Seems cooked by -1... Qh7 -2.h3:S Se3 -3.h2 Sf5 -4.a2 Sg7 -5.d2! Qh8 -6.Bh7 Qe8 -7.Bg8 h7:Q -8.Qe4 g6:S -9.Sg3 Kh5 -10.Sf1 Sf5 -11.Kg7 Sd4 etc. Is the diagram correct? (2003-11-04)
James Malcom: How is that a cook? (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: It is not, James
I suspect that Gerd changed the diagram position on 2004-02-29, but clicking on 'more...' reveals nothing (2021-06-18)
A.Buchanan: I can't find this one in WinChloe (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Issue no. 198 is not available on the Schwalbe home page, but no. 201 with solutions is, and the solution to problem 11719 starts with R: 1... Dh7-h8+, so the PDB diagram has been changed for sure; cooks are also given (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Now I see below
Reprints: 11719v ...
so this diagram is probably for an author correction, which should be labeled 11719v (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Yes, the authors have corrected, as stated in no. 205 p. 371
If you would like to solve the corrected problem yourself, you might want a hint:
the answer to the stipulation question is c1 and e8 (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: and now Mario has updated, so all comments can be hidden... (2021-06-18)
Mario Richter: Henrik, another place you can consult to find some 'Schwalbe' Retros, is the janko.at websitem here: https://www.janko.at/Retros/Schwalbe/N198.htm

Btw., for historical completeness I've added the original version. My approach with corrections: if the changes are small (e.g. add a black pawn ob a6, place wS on g2 instead of g6,etc.) and the correction has been published (chronological) "near" the original, only the corrected version is added with a comment in the comment field, explaining the correction (originally published without black pawn a6, with wS on g6 instead of g2) and when the correction appeared.
If the changes in the diagram are massive and/or the time between the publication of original and corrected version is large, both versions get an entry in the PDB. (2021-06-18)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario - and I completely agree with your approach (2021-06-19)

The interest here is in the try 5. h1=T? 6. Th8, when, in a game to that position, the sK or sT must have moved to let out Ta8 to be captured (0-0?). The solution is a surprise, involving castling round the cylinder instead.

paul: 16.Tc4 T8b3 (2020-11-03)
A.Buchanan: A nice trick for the parser which builds the animation would be to spot when a move is ambiguous. So here 16. ... Tb3 needed to be fixed to be 16. ... Tbb3. In this case, the animation guessed wrong and later reported that 19. ... Da8 was impossible. However in some cases, the error might not be picked up by a later illegal move, yet it could still be important. I will request that Gerd have a look at fixing this ancient issue. (2020-11-04)
A.Buchanan: 22.Tc8 was also imprecise, but did not cause a later illegality so there was no clue. Comparing the diagram at the end of animation to the start diagram would not necessarily be sufficient even for proof games, and completely inadequate for forward stipulations. It’s the parser can best nail these issues on a per-move basis. I’ve emailed Gerd (2020-11-05)
A.Buchanan: Gerd has fixed this: announcement 2020-11-7: The solution engine now no longer plays moves with ambiguous move notation in order to ensure that unambiguous solutions are added.
Thanks so much, Gerd! (2020-11-08)

A.Buchanan: There is a good try here. It seems that there are two possible pawn histories. In the one in the given solution, wBef cross-capture, while wBah are waylaid (= captured by officers on their own original files). In the other, sBef cross-capture, while wBah capture to promote. In the latter case, could sS or sT uncapture a white officer which, following various parity-fixing adventures, unpromotes on b8, and then gives White the necessary tempi? The Black cross-capture would have been wBe2-6 sBf7-f6xe5 wBf2-f7 sBe7xf6-f5. I could imagine a situation with sSd8, sTc8, wDb7. Then R: 1. Db8-b7 a7-a6 2. b7-b8=D Tb8-c8 3. a6xSb7 Sc5-b7 4. Kg8-f8 Sd3-c5 5. Kf8-g8 Sf4-d3 6. Kg8-f8 Sg6-Sf4 7. a5-a6 Sf8-g6 8. a4-a5 Te8-e7 retropat. In this line, wPh3 was not waylaid, so can't get that extra critical tempo. a3-a4 is not possible because then wTa1 could never have escaped its home. (2022-01-24)

Nikolai made the original version of the problem and sent it to Andrej and later to me for comments. We suggested some corrections and improvements (I do not recall the details), not expecting any public acknowledgement; but Nikolai wanted the problem published with three authors (2012-07-13)

Composers: The content demonstrates one Ceriani-Frolkin rook with thematic square c8, two with thematic square e8, as well as the two original rooks both visiting square e8 (anti-Pronkin). It is now generally accepted that only one ‘supporting’ Ceriani-Frolkin is needed while performing two-fold anti-Pronkin theme on the same thematic square. In particular the second Ceriani-Frolkin with thematic square e8 is not involved in de the double anti-Pronkin part of the entry, and hence should be considered as thematic in itself.
This implies that the full thematic content is two anti-Pronkin rooks on the same square e8, as well as two Ceriani-Frolkin rooks on squares c8 and e8, respectively. This very new, difficult and homogeneous combination was our primary intention – it is symbolized, in the future proof game language developed in the special issue Die Schwalbe 250A, by the notation AP(R,R) & CF(R,R).
Concerning the construction, one has to ensure that the thematic captured pieces are the promoted ones and not the original ones (rebirthed after promotion). This is done here with the white g-pawn standing on g7 and the visible promoted Qg6. This couple may be constructed only when the three black captures gxh6, fxg6xh5 have already occured, and rather early in the game, as the above mentioned Queen is necessarily the first black promotion – among the 3 – which left its thematic square. We hope that it is enough to ensure the soundness of the entry.
Concerning computer analysis, this is over for Euclide after 24. Bg2 (Natch may go a bit further but not much) mainly because both programs are considering that after 24. … Rfg3, this rook may arrive to g3 in 2 moves (probably jumping over the white g-pawn!) This obviously could not be considered as a bug, but certainly as a flaw from those programs. The remaining part of our proof game has been checked with Popeye, using the a=b command. (2016-03-25)
Reto: Stelvio finds the solution quite quickly with v1.17 but full resolution would take weeks if not months with the current code. I'll retry this when Stelvio has improved further. (2023-04-17)
Henrik Juel: Stelvio 1.4 found nothing in 10 minutes

'Quartz' (P. Raican): "The proof game is a correction of one published in Problemaz, December 2008, which was the last issue of this interesting chess magazine, edited by Abdelaziz Onkoud. The authors recently demolished the original problem with Jacobi. Lecturers are invited to solve this PG, even with the help of Labelle's program. After 10 years, the cook-hunters are now able to verify, even partially, the problems collected in this article, using the remarkable program Jacobi."

Otherwise can't get first move of a rook fixed if it capturing (except possibly by DP logic). See the explanatory article: https://www.dieschwalbe.de/download/artikel/Passenger_Rooks.pdf (2020-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Your solution is completely correct, Henrik! (2020-12-12)

Henrik Juel: The requirement for this tourney was something like: H#2 with retro content, so successful entries are retro problems, almost by definition
The judges must have considered that the counting here suffices as retro content
One of the other awarded problems has even less retro content: Last move could not be a pawn capture, because the other side has 16 men (2021-01-02)
Mario Richter: I think Andrew's analysis is not correct, especially his claim "There is no reason that any of these [i.e. the black promoted pieces] need still be on the board"
In fact, Black has promoted FOUR (not 3) of his pawns, twice on c1, twice on d1. The lower right corner can only be opended by retracting d2xe3, before that is possible, all four black promotions must be retracted - the only pieces available for that are Da7, Tb7, Lb8 and Sg8.
In the forward play, exactly these four black officers are captured - does that make them some kind of "Forward-Ceriani-Frolkins"?! (2021-01-02)
A.Buchanan: @Henrik,Mario: I've hidden my prior posts, although I feel I'm clearer now in my mind about what makes a retro-problem. However in the analysis here, I missed the key retraction point: thanks for picking it up. So retracting, Bl unpromotes Phoenix AUW, and uncaptures include wT' & wL' (where ' and " can denote queenside/kingside - I've been looking for a handy notation for this for a long time). With these pieces at home, Wh can unlock the cage as Mario says with dxe3. So the board contains 4 promoted units, which in current PDB terminology, we could only call "obtrusive". We must fix this naming hole. In their encyclopedia, V&V identify 4 kinds of promoted force [with some clarifications by me, including adding a 5th category]. [Each promoted unit should fit into exactly *one* of the categories, although it may not be possible to determine which exact unit is which.]
(1) In the initial problem position there is a piece that can [obviously] only have come through promotion, so-called obtrusive force, e.g. a white dark-squared Bishop, with Pawns b2 and d2 still on their original squares;
(2) [In the initial problem position] promoted force that adds the number of pieces from the game-array, for instance three Rooks or two light-squared Bishops of same color (non-standard material);
([3]) [In the initial problem position] pieces the origin of which has been promotion, which can be deduced only by retrograde analysis, i.e. there is nothing in the position that suggests it is promoted force. [This category needs a proper name, otherwise it will be forever conflated with obtrusive promotions. These are phoenix/prenix, but in many cases we won't be able to distinguish which, and wouldn't care anyway. Are the terms phoenix/prenix are only used for units still on the board?]
[(4) promoted units which have been captured before the initial problem position (Ceriani-Frolkin)]
([5]) pieces that promote during the course of solution.
The pieces of group (3),(4)[&(5)] are allowed, the pieces of group (1) are tolerated, although avoided, whereas the compositions of group (2) are rejected unless there is, say, a theme tournament for compositions with non-standard material.
For retro-problems somewhat different conventions apply, although these still meet the standards set for orthodox problems.[I don't understand this last sentence at all. Mario can you explain please.] (2021-01-03)

A.Buchanan: Not really C+ unless we test 27.0 too. (2023-05-29)
Henrik Juel: To achieve 'really C+' we must test 26.5, 26.0, .. , 1.0, 0.5 also, which seems ridiculous
Or maybe we could use a dumb solver like Popeye or Jacobi, which is too slow
Smart solvers like Stelvio test exact stipulations like 'BP in exactly 28.5' only, so for practical purposes it is necessary to test a few shorter lengths also
But just a few should suffice... (2023-05-30)
A.Buchanan: If there is a solution in x.y then there is a solution in (x+2).y. This is because any PG could be prefixed by eg 1.Sa3 Sa6 2.Sb1 Sb8. So we only need to check 4 cases. But for some reason we are only checking 3 cases. Yes it’s unlikely that there is a cook, but on the other hand it is quick to check. If you only want to check 3 fine, but it’s not C+ (2023-05-30)
A.Buchanan: Eg: P0008846 (2023-05-30)
ras@bsiag.com: Well, Stelvio treats shorter solutions of same parity as cooks, so any shorter solution in 16.5, 15.5 etc would have been found by checking for 17.5.
A.Buchanan: If there were lots of solutions at x.y, would stelvio still continue to look at (x+1).y, where there may be a single solution? (2023-06-01)
Reto: Hi all, you only need to check 28.5 and 28.0, as Stelvio always finds solutions/cooks with same move parity but less moves, so with 28.0, you also find 27.0, 26.0, ... and with 28.5 you find 27.5, 26.5, ... (2023-06-01)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for putting the record straight, Reto
I believe that Natch and Euclide only test the exact stipulation, but now I am not sure
Does anybody know the truth about Natch and Euclide? (2023-06-01)

Preisbericht in der Schwalbe, Heft 317, 10/2022, Seite 669-674.

Judge Michel Caillaud: "The theme [of one piece capturing two promoted ones] in classical retro form, with the capturing piece not being a Pawn. The nice point is that -2.Lé3×Pf4+? doesn't work. The promoted Knight cannot reach a1 so it has to unpromote on b1 to unlock the cage and another promoted piece has to be produced to unpromote on a1."

Author Andrey Frolkin: "This one is superseded by P1400748 (Q+B) which is the official 1st HM. The predecessor (B+S) should be stored “for posterity” in case someone wants to compose more problems in which an officer captures 2 promoted pieces."
Henrik Juel: Black never captured, so the only way to explain the check from Lg3 seems to be
R: 1.Lf4xSg3+ Sh5-g3 2.Lg5xLf4+ Sg3-h5
and later the two uncaptured officers are unpromoted on a1 and b1 (2021-10-26)
A.Buchanan: new version in final report (2021-10-28)
A.Buchanan: Henrik may wish to update his analysis. My question: can't we just remove sBd7? (2021-10-29)
Henrik Juel: Now the solution is R: 1.Lf4xSg3+ Sh5-g3 2.Le3xLf4+ Sg3-h5
I see no immediate purpose for Pd7, but since both Andrej and Michel have accepted it, there probably is some reason for it (2021-10-29)
A.Buchanan: It’s not necessary, according to Andriy (2021-10-29)
Henrik Juel: OK
Another matter: I believe that Andrej prefers his first name to be spelled Andrey in english
This spelling is used in the WCCC-11 announcement and in the FIDE Album 2010-12 (2021-10-30)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik. In the German field of the PDB author table, he is Andrij, and I've now changed the English name to match the French as Andrey. As recently as a year ago, I have seen him as Andriy in English articles which he has authored in Problemas (2021-10-30)
Henrik Juel: Rendering cyrillic names in a western language is extremely messy
Each western language has a 'standard' transliteration from russian cyrillic, but ukrainian and bulgarian cyrillic are slightly different from russian cyrillic
My bulgarian chess friend Nikolai/Nikolaj/Nikolay accepts any of those spellings, but he prefers Nikolay
Next time you write to Andrej/Andrij/Andrey/Andriy, you should ask him what he prefers, Andy...
I shall probably continue to use Nikolaj and Andrej, which seem most natural for me (2021-10-30)
A.Buchanan: I have a feeling that I did ask him before and he said that his favoured version is Andrey. On the receiving side, my only comment is that “iy” is a very rare bigram in English and almost never occurs. At least we all agree on the first 4 letters! (2021-10-30)
A.Buchanan: He should pick whichever spelling gives him the best anagram :) (2021-10-30)
