I think that this cooked problem is an early A osteriori. I can see ways that it might be made sound, but I would like to see the published version. San anyone help please? Thanks.

A.Buchanan: Hi Gerald. Thanks for this. Your final proposed version is r3k3/3b2p1/5p2/6b1/n3pPRp/2pq2rp/2p1P1pB/2K3n1, yes? There are 16 candidate solutions, all using castling. But wPa cannot leave the a-file, and is required for capture balance, so Black cannot castle. Five of the candidates begin with e.p.: play might have just been R: 1. A.Buchanan: I imagine that e.g. 12. ... Tc8 would allow the removal of the "exactly" limitation, which is unsavory in a tempo problem. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Yes confirmed C+ BP 12.0 after 12. ... Tc8 with Euclide 1.11. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Ronald wrote: As far as i'm concerned a game in 11 moves doesn't solve a proof game in 11.5 moves. The normal stipulation (in those days, in English) was "Position after White's 12th move. What was the game?" Which is specific and is in English, as against "PG11.5".
I happen to disagree with Ronald's position on the vexed "exactly" question, particularly for a tempo problem. But I do defend his right to retain his original stipulation associated with the problem. It is part of his creative work and as a matter of respect, scholarship and insurance it should never be over-written. There is a dependency in PDB between the animation and the diagram stipulation, which encourages over-writing. We need a unicode Originalforderung field (or maybe keyword parameter) which can contain the original stipulation in its entirety. Obviously most stipulations are unaffected, but retros are more vulnerable. Having the Originalforderung field would also free up the diagram stipulation for *greater* automation (e.g. standardization on language, helpmate, try, set play, decimal-comma-or-decimal-point, which would allow much more focused search than is available now, and a similar kind of auto-translation to what occurs in keywords and fairy pieces today). A.Buchanan: What's a polar echo? (2022-03-08)
Henrik Juel: Good question
It must refer to the two mate positions:
The bishops stand on e3,f3 and e5,f5; with the kings on f2 and f4, Black is mate, and with kings on f4 and f6, White is mate
In non-duplex problems echo/chameleon echo mates are pretty well defined (black king on same/different square color)
So polar echo is just a third type, maybe only occurring in duplex problems (2022-03-08)
A.Buchanan: Thank you, Henrik. A non-duplex mechanism for Polar Echo is shown by P1305339 & P1305340. (2022-03-08)

There are dozens of instances on record where his problems closely anticipate later work by other composers, but I have seldom found that he made any objection thereto. im 'BCM' veröffentlicht als Tourney Problem No. 7, Motto: "The Rear Guard".
Die Autorschaft ergibt sich aus einer Anmerkung im Preisbericht über die vom Wettbewerb ausgeschlossenen Probleme (s. 'BCM' 12/1890, S. 505): "... Nos. 4 and 7, by E. St. Maurice"
athulin: First published in British Chess Magazine, v. 10, i. 113 (May, 1890), p. 216, tourney prb. 7 (Motto: "The Rear Guard"), as competing in the B.C.M. #2 Tournament of 1890.
For some reason, the tourney report does not include the name of the composer (all other are mentioned), and no correction has been found in either v. 11 or v. 12 of British Chess magazine.
The collection Canadian Chess Problems (1890) includes the problem as composed by "E. St. Maurice".
The same thing happened for problem 4 in the same tournament (P1020238). (2023-04-18)
Mario Richter: @anders: It seems you overlooked the remark about excluded problems in 'BCM' 12/1890, S. 505 (2023-04-19)
athulin: @Mario Richter: Quite right, I had missed that. Thanks for the notice! (2023-04-19)

Vorweggenommen durch P1022354 , s.a. den Artikel im BCM 1886, S.441ff. Dort heißt es: "In justice to Mr. Rowland it must be noted that he undoubtedly can claim priority of publication over Herr Stahl. The Jamaica Gleaner assumed the contrary—in a recent article—upon the strength of a reprint of Mr. Rowland's version by Professor Brownson, but we have personally seen the Dublin Evening Mail of March 4th, and can vouch for the previous appearance of the position there and then.
It is somewhat curious that two of these, no doubt unconscious, reproductions should have occurred to problems crowned or highly commended in the self-same tourney. The Rowland—Stahl case is not quite so startling as the others, although the resemblance is striking enough and, if known in time, might probably have affected the award. ... the slight deviation on move one in these bi-move problems would rather tend to confirm the notion of deliberate piracy, were they the work of authors unknown to fame. We of course entertain no such suspicion and although the name of K. Stahl is almost unknown to us, yet we plainly see the probability that this composer's work was at Buffalo prior to March 4th, as also the utter unlikelihood he could have seen the Dublin Evening Mail of that date. The foregoing expose will undoubtedly not be without its utility, if composers will read aright the two-fold lesson it conveys. Viz :—First. Do not continue to harp upon old themes in a thin disguise. Let "the Bristol" rest in peace, and disturb no more the bones of "the poor Indian" or such used up subjects as the six move flight square two-mover. Second. Only false prophets tell you the future of the problem art points to positions with few pieces and scant variety. On the contrary, that way lies piracy and consequent mortification of spirit!"

A.Buchanan: Idea I suppose is that Black just moved, and moreover it was pawn double hop. I don't see clearly far enough back to confirm that. (2021-10-21)
Mario Richter: If Black moved last, the only legal retraction is R: 1. ... c7-c5! But the position can also be resolved if White moved last, starting with R: 1. f4xTg5 Tg6-g5 2. f3-f4 Ta6-g6 3. f2-f3 Sc6-a7 4. h4-h5 Ta8-a6 5. h3-h4 a6-a5 6. h2-h3 Ka5-a4 7. b3-b4 Ta4-a3.
Therefore the keyword "No legal last move for White" doesn't apply here; and to make the solution work, the Stipulation should be something like "h#2 0.1.1." or "h#1.5". (2021-10-21)
Henrik Juel: HC+ Popeye 4.61 (2021-10-22)
A.Buchanan: To my mind, the retro thinking is serious enough that we can’t claim HC+. If a tool like Replicator 2.0 was to validate the retro status I’d be ok. But I think it would be misleading to put HC+ to indicate the trivial h#1.5 is sound. We can certainly mark that Popeye has checked the h#, but not click the C+ flag. What do you think? (2021-10-22)
Henrik Juel: HC+ is not recognized (yet) by PDB, and I suppose it just meant that some sort of human analysis is needed in addition to a standard forward solver like Popeye
You are suggesting that we distinguish between easy and difficult human analysis and say HC+ for easy analysis only
I suggest saying HC+ for all problems where Popeye is not sufficient; you can write easy or difficult in the C+ comment
If and when a human analyst proves the analysis wrong, we delete the HC+ label, of course (2021-10-22)
A.Buchanan: What does Mario think? He invented the term, I seem to remember (2021-10-22)
