James Malcom: How in the world can a non-unique PG be cooked? I'm unmarking it, for now. (2021-01-25)
A.Buchanan: Maybe the intended theme was not forced? Haven’t looked at this problem though (2021-01-26)

bPa & bPh promoted with wPaxb7 & bPhxg6 to clear the way. There is an inner cage containing all the White officers, and White has only 6 current retractions. So Black must unpromote something. Both White captures were on light squares, so Lf4 is original.
1) Lf3 to h1. For speed, White must uncapture Ceriani-Frolkin D on g6, which arrives on a1 in 2 unmoves. When White uncaptures L on b7, it's Phoenix of the original.
2) Tf8 to a1. (It's too slow to unpromote on h1). When White must uncapture on b7, g2 is already blocked, so White must uncapture S, and unpromote that or one of the other Black S. However, the inner cage has been breached, so the clock has stopped now. Eventually, White will uncapture Phoenix T on g6.
The tempo is exact in both cases, so White, not Black must have the move.
A.Buchanan: Very nice - exactly matching lengths across the two lines and complementary non-trivial forward play (2021-10-21)

James Malcom: Is this fully C+ then? (2021-01-27)
Henrik Juel: No, only the first 31.5 moves are tested OK (2021-01-27)
James Malcom: No Henrik, as in is the entire problem testable. (2021-01-27)
Henrik Juel: I guess that testing the entire problem would take an unreasonably long time (2021-04-06)
A.Buchanan: It might be possible these days: the motivation for stopping at 31.5 is that the promotion theme had been demonstrated by then. But there’s still e.g. bSb8 as random impostor (2021-04-07)

Renny Bosch: This problem together with P0002238 and P0002243 form a lovely triad in each of which the rightmost three white pawns promote to a common target (Q's, R's, or B's) which subsequently get captured. Studying their similarities and differences, and what it took to make each one work, gives one a good appreciation of the art of SPG composition.

Unusually easy for a Ceriani retro.
The record in this genre may be P1000077 ; does anyone know of a retro with less than 19 men in the diagram position and the stipulation 'What were the captures?' ? (2012-07-13)

The further retroplay is easy and of little interest, I believe
James, you might want to change the initial retroplay to

A.Buchanan: Two queen moves is enough, as the animation shows. I agree white captures are hxg,axb,bxa/c. bBh promoted on h1, then moved to h4. bBh2 captured in from the left. Black pawn captures something like cxBdxexfxgxh, gxf, dxe. White abcB all promoted and at least one wB on g8. No need for a third D move as far as I can see. (2021-08-03)
Mario Richter: Hi Andrew - the main question is: How do you get the black king home?
In the solution given, after R: 7. a5xLb6 there is a black pawn on e5.
The position can only be unlocked by retracting wKe5-f5. Where exactly is the mentioned black pawn e5 at the moment wKe5-f5 is retracted? (2021-08-03)
A.Buchanan: Hi Mario, I was just responding to H-J's text assertion that 3 D moves are needed. A PG with 3 D moves could not prove that 2 are insufficient, and I find long unanimated PGs too tedious to read through sorry. I now think that the animation must be wrong, but I haven't convinced myself that no solution exists. I must work, but will have a go later. (2021-08-03)
A.Buchanan: OK - we can make sL on queenside and shift to kingside, and I can see that knights (or bishops) can't reach g8 to retract there, so it must be rooks along the 8th rank. So we can't retract the sDd7, and can't shift sTe6. But few Black tempi then. But this is not my kind of retro, and I will give up here. What's the answer: 2 or 3? (2021-08-03)
Mario Richter: My guess is, that the intended solution was 2 Queen moves, but that it it is impossible to get the black king home: R: sLf8, g7xf6 locks e8 from the right side, R: sDd8-d7, sBd7-d6 locks e8 from the left side (2021-08-03)
A.Buchanan: WinChloe has two earlier versions, and the composer was very experienced (200+ retros just in PDB) but I have now looked enough to think this is cooked. Even if we shift sBa forward 2 squares to give us a couple more moves, then all goes well shifting sL & wT to kingside, but we reach a point where sBc7xwBd6, with still sBd5, so the two pawns are the wrong side of one another. What does Rawbats think? (2021-08-04)
Mario Richter: Perhaps it suffices to say what I think?!
With bPa2 instead of a5 it is easy to reach the position with 2 queen moves only:
1. retract R: 1. Te1-f1 g3xSh2 2. Sf1-h2+
2. retract d6xSe5(or d6xTe5)xSf4xBauer_g3 while W makes tempo moves e.g. with wLg1
3. unpromote the S or Te5 on b8 and retract the wPawn to b6, while bPawn a2 retracts to a6
4. uncapture a5xLb6 - now there is no time pressure
5. unpromote wS on c8 and retract the wPawn to c6
6. retract c7xBauer_d6(!)
[this idea was inspired by the question, how the situation mentioned in your comment "we reach a point where sBc7xwBd6, with still sBd5", can be avoided]
7. retract wPawn_d6 to e.g. d3 (but not d2)
8. retract d5xTe4
9. bring wT to g8, sL to f8
10. retract g7-g8=T Dd8-d7 g6-g7 g7xSf6 (or Tf6)
11. unpromote wS or wT on a8
12. the rest is easy to see

Since the author wanted to show a certain combination of C-F-pieces, the above mentioned choices in the uncapture of white pieces still make the modified version of the problem cooked, even if with bPa2 2 Queen-moves suffice.

Zolotarev used the matrix of this problem a lot, search the PDB with
A='Zolotarev' AND G='Retro' AND POSITION='wKf5 sKf3'

And yes, the Composer may be "very experienced" as you put it, but he was also very productive regarding cooks, check e.g. https://www.dieschwalbe.de/ergaenzungena2.htm ...

And one more mysterium: the Retro Corner gives 3 Queen-moves as the solution, s. https://www.janko.at/Retros/Schwalbe/Solutions.htm#9576 (2021-08-05)
Es muß also zuerst bKf3 geschehen.

A.Buchanan: I imagine that e.g. 12. ... Tc8 would allow the removal of the "exactly" limitation, which is unsavory in a tempo problem. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Yes confirmed C+ BP 12.0 after 12. ... Tc8 with Euclide 1.11. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Ronald wrote: As far as i'm concerned a game in 11 moves doesn't solve a proof game in 11.5 moves. The normal stipulation (in those days, in English) was "Position after White's 12th move. What was the game?" Which is specific and is in English, as against "PG11.5".

I happen to disagree with Ronald's position on the vexed "exactly" question, particularly for a tempo problem. But I do defend his right to retain his original stipulation associated with the problem. It is part of his creative work and as a matter of respect, scholarship and insurance it should never be over-written. There is a dependency in PDB between the animation and the diagram stipulation, which encourages over-writing. We need a unicode Originalforderung field (or maybe keyword parameter) which can contain the original stipulation in its entirety. Obviously most stipulations are unaffected, but retros are more vulnerable. Having the Originalforderung field would also free up the diagram stipulation for *greater* automation (e.g. standardization on language, helpmate, try, set play, decimal-comma-or-decimal-point, which would allow much more focused search than is available now, and a similar kind of auto-translation to what occurs in keywords and fairy pieces today). Henrik Juel: These solution corrections should help the animation:
3... g2-g1=D, 6... f2-f1=S, 24... Db1-b2
Hans-Jürgen's numbering is a single move off from retraction 28.
(1.c2xDd3 is white, 28.a5xDb4 is black)
The stipulation seems to ask for the minimal number of black knight moves
(usually SS means knights, but here it may mean 'schwarze Springer') (2021-07-10)
Mario Richter: Henrik, if the question were about black Knight moves only, wSh3 would be able to make tempo moves, allowing e.g. to start with c2xTd3 instead of c2xDd3.
I do not have the official solution, but it obviously is: 4 Knight moves - wSb1-c3-d1,wSg1-h3 and bSb8-d7. bSg8 didn't move at all and was captured by a White officer. (2021-07-11)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your new solution, Mario, and for your enlightenments
I was misled by the originally stated solution and by Hans-Jürgen's retro game
The german convention that D means Dame=queen and DD means Damen=queens etc. may not be generally understood, so for clarification I suggest that the stipulation is spelled out, something like
Welches war die minimale Anzahl von Springerzüge?
I totally agree with your comment on the strong condition implied by the stipulation (2021-07-11)

There is some choice in the retro path, but in the shortest resolution, the sK round trip is uniquely defined: e8-c8(castling)-b8-c8(switchback)-d7-d8-e8. Note that wTa, still stuck in its cage, was captured on c2.
Mu-Tsun Tsai: Can't believe that this one didn't get the 1st prize. The design is really brilliant! (2011-04-17)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your nice words, Mu-Tsun. In 1997 there were few retro problems in Thema Danicum, and they were judged together with fairy problems, so the competition was stiff. (2011-04-17)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for posting the solution, Andrew

sK could wander around on the queen side while wS pendulates on, say, g4 and h2; but in the shortest resolution the sK round trip is unique (2021-01-17)

Note the natural notation of the Take&Make moves, far better than something like 3.bxa6[-wBa6,+wSa8], which should be written as 3.bxa6-a8=S (2021-10-23)
A.Buchanan: I will copy Gerd Wilts on your notation suggestion, which doesn't work quite now here but might be made to work - I agree it's superior. (2021-10-24)
Nightrider: What a pleasure to read this! I invented take&make, and I used the natural notation (like "bxa8-d8S") right from the beginning. Isn't it ideal if readers may understand the idea of a condition immediately by the notation of the moves?

By the way, the same holds for the (much more recent) condition make&take, where a move of a wSc3 that captures a bBg8 (for example) should be written analogously as S-f6xg8. Here again, does this natural notation not make clear on the spot what the basic idea of make&take is?

(And does it not look MUCH more elegant, for both conditions, if they are written in small letters exclusively and without blanks around "&" ? For me, it was always take&make and (years later) make&take. But, de gustibus non est disputandum...) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Hi Nightrider, thanks for kind words. I did email Gerd directly after the earlier post. He's pretty busy at the moment but in a few months thinks will have more time to deal with some items on the backlog.
For names, I agree that syntax varies. Sometimes it's down to taste, more often it's just random noise. There's also the question of "&" versus "and". (StrateGems uses both in one page!) In German, nouns are always capitalized, and the rest of PDB inherits that kind of uniformity, with the idea that PDB is just applying a local pattern, not trying to be authoritative in promoting a "canonical" way of writing each term. WinChloe has similar policy: Take & Make. YACPDB has Take&MakeChess. Search engines divide up words into atoms, so when I ask google for take&make I get "Take & Make" & "Take&Make" almost equally, so Google is blind to the distinct form that you prefer. Sorry. Judge Michel Caillaud: Composer succeeds in making Schnoebelen promotion less obvious, thanks to using 2 phases with 2 switchbacks as motivation. The need of a black tempo is the trick that allows differentiation of the phases (and the Schnoebelen Rook becomes an "anti-Schnoebelen" Rook!). Well done.

Shortest known proof game showing Valladao-Monteiro (after 8.5 moves - the extra half-move is to move beyond the check, and is the only move which preserves uniqueness of the PG).
Composed for http://abrobecker.free.fr/chess/IntroductionToPGs.pdf
>>> Agreed with Enzo Minerva that this is EM v AB: 24-Dec-2014. (Original is at P1284755.)
Kevin Begley: Partially anticipated, by Enzo Minerva, Best Problems 2005 (which shows Valladao-Monteiro in as many moves, based upon the same idea). (2014-03-01)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for highlighting this, Kevin. I had searched PDB for prior art before composing this one, but Enzo's problem was (and still is) absent. I feel that my little composition does add something more. In mine, the identity-defining Ceriani-Frolkin bishop move is not a capture. And WQ has potentially three routes to its final square, including the CF promotion square, but the two duals are eliminated by the waiting move d3. So, is Enzo still active? I am thinking this partial anticipation probably a case of "AB after EM" but if Enzo is still around I would like to discuss with him out of courtesy. (2014-05-01)
Kevin Begley: Andrew, at best, I see yours as a version. (2014-05-01)
Kevin Begley: Compare to 'P1284755'. Clearly Andrew's version is better (and not only because of the extra move avoiding check in diagram -- which may be forgiven in a proofgame aiming specifically for brevity), however thematically, they are nearly indistinguishable. I leave it for Andrew and Enzo to collaboratively determine the proper credit here. (2014-05-01)
A.Buchanan: Oh for Pete's sake... there's *another*, now I look in WinChloe:
Alexeï GASPARYAN Oakham PG Tourney,
The Problemist Supplement 2009-10

Now the date in WinChloe is wrong: what counts is the closing date for the tournament, 31-12-2009 (although the judging was only held in 07-2010, and publication was in 11-2010). Mine was published in 01-2010 (composed on 10-01-2010. I think I fold at this point, and allow Messrs. Minerva & Gasparan to duke it out, if they care. (2014-05-04)
A.Buchanan: @Kevin: and on the subject of versioning. Do you have a link to anything that gives guidelines to relative attribution. The Codex is sketchy (as usual), and I don't know where else to look. (2014-05-04)
Henrik Juel: On versioning:
When inspired by a published problem by AA to improve it, I would write 'hj after AA' if my contribution is large and 'AA, version by hj' is it is small. Of course, 'improve', 'large', and 'small' are not well defined, so it is up to the improver and the editor what to choose, and up to the judge whether an award is warranted.
In the Minerva-Gasparyan-Buchanan case the later authors surely were not inspired by the first, so here I would suggest the following possibilities: anticipated, partially anticipated, and not anticipated, again leaving the final verdict to the judge (2014-05-04)
A.Buchanan: I don't see any fundamental difference between accidental and deliberate partial anticipation. Ultimately the choice is between labeling the problem as "A,version", "A,version B" or "B, after A". I am totally ok with whatever Minerva/Gasparyan eventually determine. However, I don't think that PDB supports "A, version B" currently. (2014-05-05)
A.Buchanan: Not heard anything from Messrs Minerva or Gasparyan. I should rephrase my earlier statement as: "I don't see any fundamental difference between accidental partial anticipation, and acknowledged deliberate versioning, in terms of the set of possible final outcomes." (2014-12-24)
A.Buchanan: Resolved with Enzo :D! (See above!) (2014-12-24)
A.Buchanan: Resolved with Alexey in Facebook yesterday :D! AB: "I would like to ask you: are you ok with the current attribution of my problem?" AG: "Yes I agree." So there we are. Maybe EM & AG will conduct diplomatic negotiations at some point, but that's not my concern :) (2021-10-05)

Composers: The content demonstrates one Ceriani-Frolkin rook with thematic square c8, two with thematic square e8, as well as the two original rooks both visiting square e8 (anti-Pronkin). It is now generally accepted that only one ‘supporting’ Ceriani-Frolkin is needed while performing two-fold anti-Pronkin theme on the same thematic square. In particular the second Ceriani-Frolkin with thematic square e8 is not involved in de the double anti-Pronkin part of the entry, and hence should be considered as thematic in itself.
This implies that the full thematic content is two anti-Pronkin rooks on the same square e8, as well as two Ceriani-Frolkin rooks on squares c8 and e8, respectively. This very new, difficult and homogeneous combination was our primary intention – it is symbolized, in the future proof game language developed in the special issue Die Schwalbe 250A, by the notation AP(R,R) & CF(R,R).
Concerning the construction, one has to ensure that the thematic captured pieces are the promoted ones and not the original ones (rebirthed after promotion). This is done here with the white g-pawn standing on g7 and the visible promoted Qg6. This couple may be constructed only when the three black captures gxh6, fxg6xh5 have already occured, and rather early in the game, as the above mentioned Queen is necessarily the first black promotion – among the 3 – which left its thematic square. We hope that it is enough to ensure the soundness of the entry.
Concerning computer analysis, this is over for Euclide after 24. Bg2 (Natch may go a bit further but not much) mainly because both programs are considering that after 24. … Rfg3, this rook may arrive to g3 in 2 moves (probably jumping over the white g-pawn!) This obviously could not be considered as a bug, but certainly as a flaw from those programs. The remaining part of our proof game has been checked with Popeye, using the a=b command. (2016-03-25)
Reto: Stelvio finds the solution quite quickly with v1.17 but full resolution would take weeks if not months with the current code. I'll retry this when Stelvio has improved further. (2023-04-17)

It is a fine demonstration of the potential of the fairy condition Disparate. In the solution, a white promotion (into piece X) occurs on square c8 before any move of [Qd8] or [Ke8]. The following move Qd7 proves that X is not a rook (it can still be a queen because of the fairy condition!). The immediately following move Ke7 proves that X is not a knight. Then Ke6 is played, followed by a move by Qd7 which proves that X is not a bishop.
X thus can only be a queen! (We still have to show that the position is legal.) Only after completion of the proof, the promoted queen is captured. It is admirable that the author managed to compose a move sequence obeying all mentioned constraints concerning the move order. A rich demonstration of the fairy condition, exciting to solve.
Henrik Juel: Definition of Disparate from Julia's Fairies:
If one side makes a move with a piece of type “x” (black, white, neutral, half-neutral, etc., King included), the other side cannot answer immediately by moving a piece of the same type “x”.). A pawn promoting is a pawn move.
To me, it is not clear from the definition that 9.c8 is undetermined, and only later is inferred to be 9.c8=Q
Why can White not decide to promote to queen? (2017-03-18)
Henrik Juel: I misunderstood your text, Vlaicu
Now I see that White indeed decides to promote to queen, and your argument shows why the other promotion choices do not work in this proof game (2017-03-18)

Judge's comment [Silvio Baier]: "Two cross-captures with the same type of captured pieces (QR) are combined with a cross-capture of two black rooks. This is not the highest number of cross- captures in an orthodox proof game (see e.g. P1003984 for comparison), but the pairs are very harmonious and the additional white Q-Pronkin is difficult to implement, and especially the motivation of the promotion of Pa2 is very deep. The check in the diagram position does not detract, since g2-g3+ is also possible with respect to pure retroanalysis."
A.Buchanan: Great problem, but I disagree with the last sentence in Silvio's comment. The alternative at the end g2-g3+ would force an obtrusive bishop. If the composers could have figured out how to do this without the final check, they obviously would have. (2017-09-18)
Henrik Juel: I also like this proof game very much
It seems the kind of problem that is most readily solved by hand; the missing [Lc1] and the missing black rooks might prompt the suspicious solver to consider cross-captures

Judge's comment [Kostas Prentos]: "This is not the first quadruple Pronkin in a proof game; Nicolas has published a few, already. It is the first time that one of the four thematic pieces, the wQ, is captured at home, and is replaced by a new Pronkin Queen. The promoted black Bishops are an effective, but unpleasant alternative to the standard method of doubled pawns that usually come with this theme. In this case, the capture on d1 is thematic, and that on a1, forgivable, considering that it takes 5 moves to reestablish the Rook on a1. On the plus side, all the surviving white army has resumed the initial position."

Even if it's like fighting against windmills, "Schnoebelen promotions" were *NOT* first used in proof games, but in orthodox retros. Ceriani invented the theme in 1948, maybe even before Philippe was born!

A.Buchanan: Can claim that this is not Schnoebelen because the pawn wasn't promoted! Just remained as a pawn! But I'm sure the Schnoebelen theme was interpreted in a looser sense in 1860s. Although exponents in that era would have been baffled as to *why* the theme was termed "Schnoebelen", as Philippe was not yet born. (2020-05-09)

A.Buchanan: Can anyone send me the full results of this JT please? I have an unpublished one which is similar in theme, and I want to confirm that I’m not anticipated. I will load all problems into PDB if they’re not already here (2020-11-26)

A.Buchanan: My personal opinion is that excelsior as a keword does not exist for proof games, as all promotions are excelsiors. I don't think under-promotion as a keyword exists for any genres except direct mates & studies. I haven't included promotion yet, but I'm happy to oblige. I also include Ceriani-Frolkin whenever I include Prentos. (2020-12-08)

Something must occupy e2 on move W2 in order to protect the brave wPe as it advances.
- T is not near enough
- If this is D, then it would play 5. Dxe5 or 5. Dxa6
- If this is L, then is would play 5. Lxa6
- If this is Sg1, any promoted S on e8 is still immune because of Sb1
So by elimination, it must be Ke2

Henrik Juel: Why does the animation not work?
The solution seems to be written correctly (2021-10-20)
A.Buchanan: I have changed the stipulation, and that seems to have fixed things (2021-10-21)
A.Buchanan: While this is ingenious, in the diagram position, Black is in the losing chess equivalent of check, implying that White's last move can only be Ke2-e1 or Se2-g1. This spoils the logic. Is it possible to find a 7th move for Black which escapes the check? (2021-10-21)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Andrew
Surprising that changing Beweispartie to BP fixes the animation (2021-10-21)
A.Buchanan: And changing it back again to Beweispartie, it still works. Maybe there was an old version of the generated code which drives the animation based on the solution, and that needed to be refreshed? All very odd. (2021-10-21)

BG: "Dieses Problem bereitete mir erhebliche Lösungsschwierigkeiten. Eine Doppel-Homebase in der Diagrammstellung verrät ja auch nicht allzu viel. Allerdings lassen sich Bauernumwandlungen auf a1 und h8 vermuten. Nun gibt es aber ein Anfangsproblem: Man würde gerne mit 1. e4 b5 starten, aber der sB benötigt Schlagschutz. Also könnte Weiß vielleicht 2. - Klasse Aufgabe!"

A.Buchanan: This was successfully solved over the board by James Quah & Anirudh Daga at the first physical get-together in Singapore for a long while. Amazing that such a long PG is so accessible: well done, Silvio (2022-04-02)

A.Buchanan: Excelsior is never a feature for proof games. particularly distinguishing white from black excelsiors is meaningful for d#, s# & possibly h#. Under-promotions are meaningless for proof games, and makes search much harder. More is less for tags. Maybe we can have "theme or derived" feature like in WinChloe in future which would allow these things to be derived, but they should not form part of the core tagging. I am concerned that there is some LaTeX file somewhere where these nonsense tags are effectively being treated as the master data source and could be reinjected to PDB on a whim. (2021-04-16)
A.Buchanan: More positively, please start using the Future PG tag. Here the Prentos, prenix and switchback are doubled features. For homebase, I think one might consider "trapped hole" as a defect: here d8 can only reasonably be captured by a knight, but it's probably not worth being a tag. Here, the doubled prenix including missing wSb1 is an important mitigation. (2021-04-16)

Henrik Juel: The retroplay is R: 1... Kh1xLh2 2.Lg1xDTSh2+, not 2.Lg1-h2+?? leaving Black no previous move
The uncaptured bishop is [Ph2] promoted on b8 or d8 after six additional white captures, so [Pa7] must have promoted
White has only D and S left to be captured, so the black promotion was on a1, not b1, and White may not castle, because Ta1 has moved
Solution 1.Lg2 thr. 2.Th1#, not the illegal 1.0-0-0??
A delightful birthday greeting (2021-06-19)
Henrik Juel: I am trying to estimate your age, Andrew
You published your first problem in 'Mathematics at DEC' in 1991, at which time you could be around 30 years old; so your current age might be 60
In any case, happy birthday from me also, and thanks for your contributions to PDB (2021-06-19)
A.Buchanan: Thank you, Henrik, but I'm just one of the noisiest of the many servants of PDB. In Lion's problem, I particularly like the Home Circuit. He asks if there is a name for the theme where a promoted pawn is captured after homecoming? On other matters, see P1299465 :) (2021-06-19)
Henrik Juel: I think that we should just let that theme remain unnamed (here, [Ph2] promotes and returns to h2 as a bishop, which is captured) (2021-06-19)
A.Buchanan: I ask more to try to make a general pattern. There are plenty of keywords which indicate when something gets somewhere. Maybe the dramatic qualifier "fatal" can indicate the fate awaiting the piece when it gets there? So "fatal homecoming", "fatal pronkin", "fatal Donati" etc? :) (2021-06-19)
Walter Lindenthal: The solution is clear-cut. But the sequence of moves that leads to the final diagram position is characteristically influenced by the kind of b promotion. a1=bQ/bS allows a rather FREE selection of moves and finally bQ/bS/bR could occupy h2 for the R-final capture wBg1x?h2, bKh1xBh2. In contrast, a1=bR directs the sequence of moves rather tightly, and ONLY the promoted bR can occupy h2 for the R-final capture (analytic details see Facebook). (2021-06-21)
