Pièces rétro-volages
VL: Solution:
1.Rg2=wR Rb6=wR!! 2.Re8=bR! 0-0#! (2... Rf1#??)
2.Ra(c)8=wR??

Here only one w rook is volage since they both stand on light squares
of ODD ranks: any promotee had to visit a square of the opposite
colour at least once in order to arrive from the 8th rank! Similarly,
only one bl rook is volage (EVEN ranks). By the AP logic, we have a
right to justify the 1st W's move by subsequent castling, which shows
that it is Rh1 that is volage. Bl rooks play by the post factum
(subordination) logic: the first one turns out volage.

Cooked (feenschach, 126): 1.Ra2(Rc2,Rb3...)=wR Rh7+ 2.Kf8 Ra8#
Correction: Rh8- e8. (2002-04-05)
VL: Correction (H.130): Rh8 to d8 (rather than to the light square e8). (2021-02-12)
A.Buchanan: shifted sT to d8 as per request (2021-02-12)

in 'Le Pion' fälschlich wBa4 ("1 - R 1 R ... 5 - P 4 TD ...")

Nach heutigen Konventionen ist der Ep-Schlag unzulässig, man beachte aber:
Kling im 'Chess Euclid' zur Intention dieser Aufgabe: "This problem I have compossed expressly to shew the error the modern composers of problems have committed, in introducing the system of castling in the ends of games. In this problem I consider I have as good a reason to say that Black has just moved his Q. Kt. P. [b5] two squares as that White has not moved his K. R. or K."
James Malcom: I found this hidden ancient, another that rode the rails of the unjustified en passant key. (2020-12-28)
SP: Unsound in its own terms, as, whatever Black plays (Kb1/Qa7),
castling is never forced due to 2.Kf2#
I use the keyword "non-analytic en passant key" for such problems. (2023-08-21)
A.Buchanan: The composer's stated intention seems to be that (1) ep is ok (2) castling is not ok. In these terms, the problem is sound (2023-08-22)

[Alfred Pfeiffer]
“Come-back zum Feld d2 nach Unterverwandlung. Fantastische Idee!” [HK]
Dabei ist was Hübsches rausgekommen.” [Autor]

A.Buchanan: sSg2 observes but since it is unobserved, does not give check. d1 is observed but not attacked: this is important after the castling when wTd1 does indeed check sK. (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: Andrew, you seem to have changed the english name for Beamtenschach from Functionary Chess to Civil Servant Chess
I prefer Functionary, because it is closer to the french and danish names (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: ... also Functionary is used by Popeye and Jacobi (2022-01-25)
A.Buchanan: The definition speaks of Civil Servant, as a property that a piece may have. Or maybe that was auto-translated? The word "Functionary" is quite obscure and dull word in English, and is a very poor translation. Most English-speaking people will think first as having something to do with "Function". A much better translation might be "Bureaucrat", which is the term in Russian. However since I changed it to align with the definition, I've seen that this dull word "Functionary" has in fact already got some currency in other places, so I think I've probably got to change it back, and will alter the definition to correspond too. (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Andrew; in your new PDB translation a single Civil Servant still lingers...
Beamtenschach was invented by german composers, who obviously named the condition in German; then it was 'correctly' translated into French as Echecs Fonctionnaires, and I guess the english name was derived from the french one
In an ideal world we should not translate fairy chess terms at all, and use the original name; this works fine for Köko, Circe Parrain, and lots of other fairy conditions
Unfortunately, the rivalry between the major western chess languages (German, English, French) seems to prevent a rational approach... (2022-01-25)

Krabbe's Reprint: "The search is over - as was to be expected, Hanspeter Suwe found a real anticipation in his archives.

(diagram)

Suwe adds he does not know the exact date of publication (judging from the photo above, it's a pity that it couldn't be Belén's birthday) and nothing about the author. "It is the same matrix which has also been found by Pérez Carballo and McDowell. The problem by the last one is the best: very good construction with a fantastic key move: 1.Nd1!, a so called AZE (means Anti-Ziel-Element), a term for such a strategic move, created by the Austrian composer Helmut Zajic."
Suwe thinks there might be even older examples and will continue to look for them.

With this information, McDowell found Wettstein's (a Swiss) problem in a book Kunstschach in der Schweiz / Les Echecs artistiques en Suisse" by Hans Henneberger (1980), who comments: "A chess riddle in which one really wouldn't expect castling!"

"This problem introduces a theme which, to the composer's and my knowledge and surprise, seems not to have been thought of before. Pérez Carballo (a Spanish chess player of around 2150 living in Glasgow - one of the first things he did there was to go to a library where he could see with his own eyes Barbier's 1895 Glasgow Weekly Citizen articles in which the Saavedra position was discovered - "I was almost crying of excitement as I turned the pages of the thick bound volumes until I got to the very colums") always felt attracted to the unusual in chess. He didn't play the Spanish but the Portuguese (1.e4 e5 2.Bb5) and composed some problems and studies with castling and en passant ideas, but this is his first publication.
The idea for this problem had "haunted him for almost a decade", but the best he had been able to come up with was a version with an inexcusably bad key; the capture of a Queen. Then one weekend, he decided to give it one last, all-out try. When he went to bed early Sunday morning, nothing had worked but after waking up, he realised he had seen the solution in a dream. It still needed a finishing touch - the a4 and b4 pawns had been absent - but when he added them, it worked.

1.Nxa4 threatening 2.Nbc3+ and mate. Black has two defences:
a) 1...Rxb1 when 2.Bd3 Rxa1 3.Rxc2+ Kb1 4.Nc3 is mate, and
b) 1...Rxc4 2.Nbc3+ Kc2 (2...Rb1 3.Bd3 Rxa1 4.Ne2 mate) 3.Bd3+ Kxd3 4.O-O-O mate

The switchback mate 4.Nc3 in variation a) and the model mate 4.Ne2 in b) are nice, but 4.O-O-O mate in b) is the central idea of the Belén Theme: in a direct-mate, the Black King starts at c1 and is mated by O-O-O.

But why Belén theme? Pérez Carballo sent me his problem on 17 July, because on that day it was 5 years ago he met his "other passion outside chess", his partner Belén - the Spanish form of Bethlehem. He dedicates his problem to her, and names the theme after her, wondering if ever before a chess theme has been named after a loved one.

So far so good, but there could be two reasons he's holding his breath now. A reader (Hanspeter Suwe for instance, the editor of the castling magazine König & Turm) might know of an earlier Belén problem - and a composer might be inspired to make a better Belén, either improving on this setting, or creating an new one. Pérez Carballo does realize his problem is not the perfect rendering of the theme. For one thing, the ideal Belén would be a three-mover. The flight-taking key is not very good; a black piece on b1 would conceal the solution better (but then it would have to be a four-mover) and he did not manage the Meredith form - 12 pieces or less. But the Pa3 is needed to stop 1.Na3+; the Pa4 is needed to stop 1.Nd2+ Kb2 2.Rb1+ Kxa3 3.Rxb3 mate, and the Pb4 is needed to stop 1.Nd2+ Kb2 2.Rb1+ Kxa3 3.Rxa4 mate.

But he did create the first Belén - nobody can take that from him."
James Malcom: This is the problem on Tim Krabbe's site that sparked the world wide chess phenomenon known as the Belen Theme and the problem that named the theme-https://timkr.home.xs4all.nl/chess2/diary13txt.htm (2020-09-20)
Henrik Juel: The thematic variation is correct
1.Sc3*a4 Rc2*c4 2.Sb1-c3+ Kc1-c2 3.Be2-d3+ Kc2*d3 4.0-0-0#
But the problem is very damaged by duals in other variations, e.g.

" I may, through lack of attention, have created a awkward problem for the composers. They do care a lot, and rightly so, about precedence, anticipation, novelty of idea & setting.
Between sending me his first Belén problem on 17 July and my publication of it on 24 July, Pérez Carballo also sent me a gamefile with games of his, and at the end two "Belén Theme" four-movers, the second being a new version which I must admit did not really take root in my mind.
Right after my publication of the Belén problem, Michael McDowell sent me the two three-movers above and the next day, the four-move version with 1.Nd1!
As it turns out now however, that other four-mover in Pérez Carballo's gamefile anticipates, to a degree, McDowell's 1.Nd1 four-mover.

(diagram)

Largely the same setting and the same play. There can be no doubt that McDowell's problem is better (at the Chess Problem Discussion Board Pérez Carballo recognizes that) but there is also no doubt Pérez Carballo had some of the ideas first - of course without McDowell knowing that. Still, an anticipation. But: is an anticipation an anticipation without publication? Have I wronged somebody and if so, whom?
I'm afraid all I can do is turn beet-red, and thank both composers for their work. The Belén Theme Story amounts to an interesting insight into the development of a problem idea."

http://www.berlinthema.de/AUSWAHL_PH.pdf

page 181, with full solution and comments. In page 180 are also presented, and commented, the known examples of Valladao-Belen (Just two so far, one of them evolved online recently here in MP):

After a promotion to Queen, and a promotion to Knight, now we have a promotion to Rook.

****** Peter, thanks for Your interest in the Valladão-Belén!! :"

Post 7-"In his excellent # 5, Peter Hoffmann introduces important novelties in the VB field: The promotion move act in three different levels of significance (control of b3, of b5 avoiding to affect d3, and - not least- create a threat of mate in two in e4, allowing a consistent en passant part in real play) : 2.b8 = R is the most impressive single movement in the whole VB's history!

He refers to the Belén as a "motif". In the old Rebnora forum discussions Frank Richter alluded to an "ornamental effect". For Erik Zierke, the Belén condition arrive to become an obstacle ('Hindernis') for the more satisfactory expression in the Valladão field (in the same book we find others of Peter Hoffmann's creations in this field)."

A.Buchanan: Hi James, couple of nits about old Bosma:
(1) From the 1985 Laws: "Article 5. THE MOVES OF THE PIECES The King (a) Except when cast[l]ing, the king moves to any adjoining square that is not attacked by an opponent's piece." This is separate from Article 9. CHECK 9.1 "The king is In check when the square it occupies is attacked by one or two of the opponent's pieces; in this case the latter is or are said to be "checking the king.' 9.2 Check must be parried by the [move] immediately following." This point may have been an assumption in earlier compositions, as e.g. it prevents kings from being adjacent.
(2) And again from Article 5. "(f) Castling is prevented for the time being - (i) if the king's original square or the square which the king must cross over or that which it is to occupy is attacked by an opponent's piece," Does this prevent your 1.0-0?
What do you think? (2020-11-08)
James Malcom: Ah, why did I but never bother to look at the castling rules!

Well I see nothing against adjacent kings, and seeing about how the "loophole" was about was not explicitly stated couldn't be done, I see it as allowed, and thus what to watch out for in cooks.

The rule on castling says "piece," not pieces. So, quite simply, castling in, out (P1381498), and through (P1381499) check is allowed in my view. (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: Furthermore, if a king is "attacked," they are in check, plain and simple. So, since a triple check/ attack is not defined as a danger to the king, the king may go to any such square, including the acts of catling and adjacent kings.

Also, going by the law itself, and not the Bosma conditions, the king may be captured, but it does nothing and that side can never be checkmated, while Bosma Chess itself allows no king capture. But since the effect is the same, allowing for my jokes to be C+ by Winchloe if the program agrees. Maybe try out my castlings in it? (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: And indeed Andrew has tested my castling problems now-all are C+? (2020-11-14)

A.Buchanan: @Henrik how should the dual here impact C+ status we assign? What's the general principle we curators should apply, to avoid us having to make subjective judgements? (2021-01-07)
A.Buchanan: My own simple-minded aesthetic says this is a major dual, because one mate achieves no individual expression elsewhere (2021-01-07)
Henrik Juel: The easiest principle is to say that C+ means completely correct: no cooks and no duals
I would permit short mates, because they occur as a result of suboptimal defense, and double threats, if they do not materialize as duals
But it seems fair also to permit minor duals, including promotion mate duals like TD og LD
So I would not label this problem C+ (2021-01-08)
A.Buchanan: Thank you Henrik, for your thoughtful response. A lot is bundled into one bit of information: the value of the C+? flag. I went back to the Codex to learn more. I think C+ should mean (1) it's been tested & (2) it is sound. Sound (which we don't have in PDB yet) for an antagonistic problem (i.e. d# or s#) means three things: (1) there is a solution (2) there's no cook & (3) there's a defence which forces the specified number of moves. Legality doesn't impact soundness, and for antagonistic problems, neither do duals.

The Codex says there is a lot of judgement involved in assessing the impact of duals in a d#. "C+?" is a result of computer analysis, and I don't think there should be any curator subjectivity in determining its value. I think the answer is to have "duals" as a new separate field so that your valuable analyses aren't lost in conversation, and people can understand the spectrum of quality. In the end, maybe people will be able to set up in their profile their personal preference for dual tolerance, but that's probably some way ahead. I think there are naturally core fields (like cooked?, legal?, tested?) and derived fields (like sound? C+?, HC+?) whose values depend on the core ones. I've sent some notes to Gerd along these lines to see what he thinks. Any thoughts yourself? (2021-01-08)

Henrik Juel: Unfortunately not, Andrew
In those days the first name was almost always abbreviated to an initial
Christian was a very common first name, but this was usually abbreviated to Chr.
So a wild guess is Carl, but it really could be anything starting with C
In a Skakbladet issue he is referred to as Direktør Staugaard, but this just means that he was in charge of a company (2021-01-22)
A.Buchanan: I have posted an English definition of the keyword. Please check if it suits. (2021-01-22)
Henrik Juel: Searching for direktør staugaard, randers (a danish city) yields
Conrad Staugaard (1852-1922)
so this is my best bet
Conrad Staugaard headed a bank in Randers, founded by him in 1891, but the CV in
http://historiskranders.dk/randers-biografier/
does not mention anything about playing chess or chess problems
Chess playing was very common in the middle class, so the biographer may not have found it worth mentioning (2021-01-22)

Henrik Juel: Very good, Andrew
Ah, the joys of Google...
In the danish text there is not only your citation on chess, but also one on chess problems
There are also examples of Conrad's excentric behaviour, in line with him inventing the looong castling
That C. Staugaard might be Conrad's younger brother Carl (who surely also knew about chess) is ruled out by the fact that Carl emigrated to South America in 1901, because he experienced disappointments in his love live... (2021-01-22)
A.Buchanan: Yes it said he had lots of amazing concepts. The idea about the banner for his nursemaid to take his children for walks without getting her arms stretched is very funny. This is our man. He also seems to have been a good man, and an effective businessman. And loved enough by his friends for a 120 page book to have been commissioned in his memory. He is reminiscent of other children’s authors like Edward Lear, Dr Seuss, Heinrich Hoffmann... I’m so happy that this problem has brought him back to our awareness (2021-01-23)
