A.Buchanan: The term "retro" is jungle not garden - that means we should not expect an axiomatic definition. The current problem is a case in point. Case law has established that neither simple employment of the castling convention nor existence of check are sufficient to make a problem "retro". But all this problem has is the quirky use of Codex Article 15 to force BTM. So I think this problem has to be retro. The key point is that nothing hinges on the retro-ness. If the problem included 50M or DP, then one would expect a more solid foundation. As it is, all we need is the free direct mate in 1 that comes as part of the retro paradigm. (2021-11-26)

Henrik Juel: something is wrong here: the claimed mates are not even checks
also, the stipulation should probably be something like
Black and White retract, then #1 (2021-04-30)
A.Buchanan: Yes the problem was the word "dann" which indicates help retractor. The retro is just justification for the forward moves, showing that the relevant fairy piece existed earlier in the game so can be promoted to. What's the name of that principle? (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the clarification, Andrew
I think that this principle should remain unnamed and just stay in the joke realm (2021-05-01)
A.Buchanan: Sorry not to be clear: I am talking about the standard fairy principle that if you want to promote to a Princess, there should be one on the problem diagram. Not talking about the joke extension which riffs off this. I thought this was called "Bartel Theme", but it turns out that is something different. (2021-05-01)
Henrik Juel: I see; that principle probably was established soon after the invention of grasshoppers and nightriders
I do not think it has a name, but it is so well established that it should be in the Codex (2021-05-01)

Numerous retro tries h#3 but none distinct, however unique h#2 which serves as setplay under Art. 15.
A.Buchanan: In some cases, as here, the unique retro try is short: just h#2. It's clearly intentional (the 3 Bl units on e-file serve just this line). (2021-10-20)
A.Buchanan: For h# problems, Art. 15 is just a motivation for set play. They come down to the same thing, pruning the first single move. So if we talk about set play for an Art. 15 problem, maybe it means *after* the player has been flipped for retro reasons. And set play doesn't care whether the position is legal or not! (Otherwise it would be called "*consequent* set play", maybe!)
So here we start with a h#3*, which for retro reasons, becomes a h#2.5*. This yields a mate in 2.5 and a mate in 2.0, and comically we never get to worry that the latter is in an illegal position. If there was a clean mate in 3.0, that could be denoted h#3v, to indicate the try.
Does that work as a notation? How about directmates? (2021-10-20)
Henrik Juel: In problems with stipulations like #2 or #3, the convention is that the number (2 or 3) is the number of white moves, so there the retro joke is clear
For helpmates there is no such convention, but your notation seems OK (2021-10-20)

A.Buchanan: WinChloe also gives the same composer. A curious situation, but at least the problem attributed to you appears to be sound! (2024-02-19)
Adrian Storisteanu: Above the "diagrammes" diagram there is: R. SHANKAR, Inde. In the volume index, under RETROS: this is the only problem of a composer named (just) "SHANKAR" (one original), while "RAVI SHANKAR" is a different author (with two originals). (2024-02-20)
A.Buchanan: I suggest that S.N.Ravishankar check the reaponse to the query (A='Shankar' or a='Ravishankar') AND NOT A='Shankar Ram, Narajan' as there are many other similar retros which are attributed to Ravishankar. If he can state here which ones are not his, I will happily modify the data. (2024-02-21)

A.Buchanan: The final position in Kees' solution has wTf6 which must be promoted. This could have been wBb, which captured e.g. bBa5, bBb6 e.p., bLa7, bSb8.
wTf7 is also promoted, and might be sBh having capturing wBg5, wBh6 e.p., wLg2, wTh1. sBfxLg6 completes the picture. I don't see any difficult captures e.g. of S remaining, so the position looks to be legal. (2022-02-16)

Rosalie Fay: R: 1. 0-0 b2-b1=B 2. d2-d3 c3xb2. What did the bP capture? A wQ or wR doesn't leave White a previous move; a wP makes an illegal wP structure, so wB or wN.

bK got into the SW cage via a3. When bK was on a3, [wPb2] was on b3, and [wPa2] was on a2. So these wPs did not cross-capture. wQ cannot have been in the cage at the time, because, if it were, bK could not get in without walking into check from wQ. So when wQ entered the cage, bK was already in. wQ must have entered via a1 or b2. To avoid giving an unparriable check, wQ must've moved to a1 with bKc1 and a shield on b1.

But this shield doesn't have to be the piece captured on b2 by the promoting bP. Why not

The problem is from a construction contest: h# with white and black promotion (2021-05-24)
A.Buchanan: In some ways, Henrik, composition is about trying to find the best natural form that a problem is trying to take. I wasn't trying to think the unthinkable, but when I finally thought it as the only way to salvage and indeed amplify your idea here, I started looking forward to reading your response :) If you don't want it, that's absolutely fine - I will claim it as an "after HJ", and try to find some "Salon Des Refuses" in which to exhibit it (2021-05-24)

Composing exercise 50 was announced in Thema Danicum no. 72, where the editor Holger Helledie asked for help mate problems with 1 white and 1 black promotion, as long as possible
Theodor Steudel pointed out that problems as short as possible were also relevant, and the submitted problems along with many old ones were shown in TD no. 73, where HH expanded the criteria to
1. As few men as possible (4 was achieved in 1927: Kh8 Pf7 - Ka1 Pb3, h#2)
2. Shortest or longest possible (from h#1.5 to h#10, the latter from 1956: Kc1 Pc2 - Kh7 Pc3e4)
3. Economy of the men
4. Publication date
Four more problems appeared in TD no. 74, where HH announced his resignation as editor

A.Buchanan: So this was Niemann's own correction, I guess. When was FEENSCHACH renamed feenschach? (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: "Jungle & Garden" is a new perspective in the fairy chess terminology classification campaign. It comes from a frustration I've had in writing glossary entries (not just in chess, but in my professional life) as to what I am trying to achieve with a definition. Is it ever "good enough", or can it be? It basically says that any term is either a *description* of an aspect of the chaotic real world ("Jungle") or it's a *definition* in our provisional model of that world ("Garden"). Words like "love", "game", "fairy", "tempo", "joke" are all Jungle words. The meaning is derived from consensus: like a ship's anchor cable is made up of many fibres, in Wittgenstein's famous image. On the other hand, we are trying to build (in our software & databases) formal models which can classify, solve and compose chess problems (Gardens). The terminology in any one can and must be exact, as it emerges bottom-up from formal mathematics, logical and informational structures. However these terms are only provisional, and different Gardens may have different interpretations. It is acknowledged that they are not the same as similar terms in the Jungle. They are our best shot so far. It is valid to list (in a civil way) perceived shortcomings between the Garden and the Jungle, which can be put in a backlog to be handled later. "Legality" is an excellent example of a Garden concept, which is why I am exploring it currently. Comments welcome. (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: A database crosses the divide: it must store accurate "photographs of the jungle". Any transformation of these compositions (e.g. rationalization of the stipulation) cannot over-write primary jungle data. I thought this composition did that, but I think it's Niemann's own correction published later. (2021-05-25)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the explanation, Andrew (2021-05-25)

Yuri Bilokin: Correction: wRh4-h5 8/8/5k2/7R/6n1/8/5B2/5K2 (3+2) (2021-04-16)
A.Buchanan: I don't know what to do here. Clearly we can't disrupt the rook square, so maybe +sBf3 is best as Yuri proposes (2021-04-16)
Yuri Bilokin: It is necessary to decide what is better to break the rook square or the Ideal mate. (2021-04-16)
A.Buchanan: Ideal mates are cheap, but Th4-h3-g3xg4-h4# is a prize. (2021-04-17)
SCHRECKE: why not: +bPh3? (2021-04-17)
A.Buchanan: @SCHRECKE because the rook's movement in a square should not be motivated by capturing, and +sBh3 also blocks wT unnecessarily from h1 & h2. This problem does not appear in WinChloe, at least not in Canadian Chess Chat under this author (who has 891 total compositions - not gone through them all). Maybe he never fixed it. One clean idea is to replace wKf1 with sBg2. This is still an ideal mate. Then put +wKa1 if you must :-) (2021-04-17)
A.Buchanan: +sBg2 & wKa1 is sound, but maybe best to rotate the board as sB threatening to promote is perhaps unfairly distracting to solvers (2021-04-18)
Olaf Jenkner: Is it not a merit? (2021-04-18)

Adrian Storisteanu: Or, finally, a variation which uses just a bP (not bB) as Andrew suggested, and still makes use of the wK (as does Yuri's):
Bg6 Rd3 Kf1 / Kb5 Sd4 Pf4 (3+3)
1...Re3 2.Kc4 Re4 3.Kd3 Rxd4+ 4.Ke3 Rd3# (2021-04-18)
Adrian Storisteanu: Or, more centred:
Bb7 Re4 Kc2 / Kg6 Pc5 Se5 (3+3)
1...Rd4 2.Kf5 Rd5 3.Ke4 Rxe5+ 4.Kd4 Re4# (2021-04-18)
Adrian Storisteanu: (In the latest, a bPe5 -- instead of bSe5 -- is just as good...) (2021-04-19)
A.Buchanan: Busy - will check these later. But Adrian I didn’t suggest bB but sB i.e. (German) black pawn not bishop (2021-04-19)
Adrian Storisteanu: I understood you fine (but I might have misplaced the text in parentheses). (2021-04-19)
A.Buchanan: With your latest Bb7 Re4 Kc2 / Kg6 Pc5e5, once might as well remove the two black pawns and replace with wPd6 (then rotating the board by 180 degrees). But surely this is not original, and indeed P0510694 by Ugren achieves full h#4. But Yuri has already corrected P0503631 by Krikehli to achieve the same thing! Time to give up - nothing new here. Thema des TT ('The Problemist' 09/1992, S. 88): "... composers are required to combine 2 (or more) problems to make a distinct third."

A),(B) and (C) come together as something quite new in (D). But note a minimal record: 5 pieces, cyclic absence of 2 of the pieces, 4 different series-demands, and only ideal mates! Was Holmes right in thinking that a later model of Prof Babbage's "engine" (Cambridge,1834) determined the solving conditions and lengths?"

Henrik Juel: These solution corrections should help the animation:
3... g2-g1=D, 6... f2-f1=S, 24... Db1-b2
Hans-Jürgen's numbering is a single move off from retraction 28.
(1.c2xDd3 is white, 28.a5xDb4 is black)
The stipulation seems to ask for the minimal number of black knight moves
(usually SS means knights, but here it may mean 'schwarze Springer') (2021-07-10)
Mario Richter: Henrik, if the question were about black Knight moves only, wSh3 would be able to make tempo moves, allowing e.g. to start with c2xTd3 instead of c2xDd3.
I do not have the official solution, but it obviously is: 4 Knight moves - wSb1-c3-d1,wSg1-h3 and bSb8-d7. bSg8 didn't move at all and was captured by a White officer. (2021-07-11)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your new solution, Mario, and for your enlightenments
I was misled by the originally stated solution and by Hans-Jürgen's retro game
The german convention that D means Dame=queen and DD means Damen=queens etc. may not be generally understood, so for clarification I suggest that the stipulation is spelled out, something like
Welches war die minimale Anzahl von Springerzüge?
I totally agree with your comment on the strong condition implied by the stipulation (2021-07-11)

"Interessantes Circe-Geschehen, thematisch aber schwer einzuordnen. Als Minimal aber sehr gefällig." (eb)
"Eine erfrischende Circe-Aufgabe" (HMo).
Der Autor merkt zu dem Stück an: "It shows a Circe-specific tempo idea, executed by both Black and White. Under Circe, a unit on its home square can make an 'absolutely pure' tempo move if it is then captured and reborn"
"very pretty" (LV).
HJä: "1.- Th7 und 1.La3 sind wirklich geistreiche Circe-Wartezüge. Sehr schönes Minimal."

A.Buchanan: This is really wonderful. and I wonder if its thematic originality and apparent simplicity maybe denied it a higher prize. Note how three Black units, which all have other day jobs, block wK from executing the White waiting move. On the other hand bRg1 can’t do the black waiting move, again for check reasons (2021-06-24)
A.Buchanan: And why have the bRg1 anyway? Well, it prevents a large number of cooks in a, because otherwise wRd1 can't be captured as it will respawn on h1. On the other hand it prevents premature check in b, and the respawn on a1 *is* an issue. Harmonious asymmetry, in both cases requiring that b1 & d1 be cleared, and that all the pieces have multiple roles. (2021-06-24)
A.Buchanan: Where a theme appears both for white and black also can be more challenging than where the theme is echoed by the same player in the twin. The position needs to be fundamentally reperceived in such a twin, and to achieve great economy is even more laudable, imho. (2021-06-25)

Se5!

(A. Beine).
