A shortest game to reach 16 passed pawns
Henrik Juel: Euclide 1.01 confirms that no shorter proof game exists
It seems that the moves are unique, so a challenging part b) suggests itself: How many solutions? (2018-03-27)
A.Buchanan: Thanks, Henrik. Your b) would be challenging indeed! Usually if I make a problem "how many solutions?", the purpose of the problem is to showcase some combinatorial identity, and the play would be structurally simpler.
A different direction is to ask: how many *diagrams* exist that could illustrate the same point: 16 passed pawns in 20.0 moves? I think the answer, including this one, is 12.
Another much harder question is whether one can push the surviving officers around to make a longer but unique proof game. (2018-03-28)
Henrik Juel: 16 passed pawns come in (at least) two varieties
1. A pawn position where all pawns could promote without further captures
2. A pawn position where PxP captures (except possibly ep) are no longer possible
Andrew's definition is probably the latter (2018-03-28)
A.Buchanan: Sorry I don't understand this distinction. (2018-03-28)
Henrik Juel: They are not mutually exclusive, 2 implies 1
Type 1 would apply to your PG, also if the white pawns on the c and e files were lowered to c2,c3 and e2,e3
In type 1 'passed' is interpreted as 'allowing 16 free promotions'; it is equivalent to a game with 8 pawn captures, 1 from each file
To reach type 2, some pawn may have to advance further (2018-03-28)
A.Buchanan: OIC: in the context of playing the game, definition 2 is what counts, because no PxP captures are possible. The only question in people'e minds in stackexchange is whether doubled pawns can count as being passed. The assessment is that they can. (2018-03-28)

A.Buchanan: Thanks Moldenhauer. This is "obviously" a non-unique proof game, but there's no syntax in stipulations to distinguish between them. There is also sometimes the notion that a non-unique PG must force some thematic content, but that's not the case here, as the content is visible in the target diagram. So I interpret your Stelvio as C+ for this humble problem. Thanks again. (2023-06-21)

Nach den "alten Regeln korrekt", aber inkorrekt, wenn "dummy pawns" erlaubt sind:
1. Sg6 g1=B! "and White cannot possibly mate in two more moves."

Correct according to the "old rules", but incorrect if "dummy pawns" are allowed:
1. Sg6 g1=B! "and White cannot possibly mate in two more moves."
Constructed by Pavitt as an example of how the change in the conversion rule for the British Chess Federation decided at the London Chess Congress (i.e. the possibility of UW into a "dummy pawn") also has implications for chess composition:
1. problems that were correct under the old rules may become incorrect (like this one).
2. since other chess federations have not adapted this rule, problems with UW must always indicate according to which rules to solve.

A.Buchanan: Hi James, couple of nits about old Bosma:
(1) From the 1985 Laws: "Article 5. THE MOVES OF THE PIECES The King (a) Except when cast[l]ing, the king moves to any adjoining square that is not attacked by an opponent's piece." This is separate from Article 9. CHECK 9.1 "The king is In check when the square it occupies is attacked by one or two of the opponent's pieces; in this case the latter is or are said to be "checking the king.' 9.2 Check must be parried by the [move] immediately following." This point may have been an assumption in earlier compositions, as e.g. it prevents kings from being adjacent.
(2) And again from Article 5. "(f) Castling is prevented for the time being - (i) if the king's original square or the square which the king must cross over or that which it is to occupy is attacked by an opponent's piece," Does this prevent your 1.0-0?
What do you think? (2020-11-08)
James Malcom: Ah, why did I but never bother to look at the castling rules!

Well I see nothing against adjacent kings, and seeing about how the "loophole" was about was not explicitly stated couldn't be done, I see it as allowed, and thus what to watch out for in cooks.

The rule on castling says "piece," not pieces. So, quite simply, castling in, out (P1381498), and through (P1381499) check is allowed in my view. (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: Furthermore, if a king is "attacked," they are in check, plain and simple. So, since a triple check/ attack is not defined as a danger to the king, the king may go to any such square, including the acts of catling and adjacent kings.

Also, going by the law itself, and not the Bosma conditions, the king may be captured, but it does nothing and that side can never be checkmated, while Bosma Chess itself allows no king capture. But since the effect is the same, allowing for my jokes to be C+ by Winchloe if the program agrees. Maybe try out my castlings in it? (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: And indeed Andrew has tested my castling problems now-all are C+? (2020-11-14)

Find a diagram which can recur a maximum number of times, such that it also has a unique KBP (shortest proof game) to its first occurrence.
a) with 3-fold repetition & 50-move rules
b) with 5-fold repetition & 75-move rules
a) e.g. 1. a4 e5 2. a5 e4 3. a6 Sxa6 4. f4
b) e.g. 1. e3 a5 2. La6 e6 3. Se2
play all play one stop play next play all
a) 22 occurrences possible, with 44.5 moves, so no issue with 50-move rule even if it were mandatory.
b) 37 occurrences possible, with 74.0 moves + 0.5 for 3. Se2 in proof game.
The theoretical maximum of 42 is impossible, because it would take 84.5 moves, breaching the mandatory 75-move rule.
Other shortest unique SPGs are possible, but need:
(1) both sides have at least 2 of K,R & R able to move.
(2) both sides must have officer to triangulate.
(3) (for player on the move) triangulating officer must be B or Q.
(4) (for 3+50 case only) e.p. set up.

A.Buchanan: The point about promotion dual hadn't occurred to me: interesting! On reflection, I think it's like the tolerated dual in regular chess, where if the mating move is =Q/R or =Q/B that's ok, because it would be unreasonable to exclude from soundness all promotion mates where the mated king is not very near to the promoted unit. Similarly here, the promotion captures the opposing king, so the promotion choice is academic. Nevertheless, we would not wish to render unsound *all* king-capturing promotion moves, so we need a tolerated dual! Ground-breaking! :D Thanks so much (2021-05-02)

It has been published by several others. (2023-01-08)
A.Buchanan: The contrast between the two win conditions is the entire point. However this must be represented using the a)&b) notation, which gives the impression that each twin is separate. The composition was just a self-published schema anyway, so who cares? (2023-01-09)

Henrik Juel: White seems to win easily with 1.g8=S+ Ke6,Kf7 2.Sxe7 (2023-07-25)
Joost de Heer: Henrik, white loses on time in that try.
The only way to force an draw is 1. g8=B! and even if white can't finish the forced moves 1... Qg7 2. Qg7# he at least has a draw since black can't possibly win anymore.
1. g8=Q? doesn't lead to a half-dead position (1... Qg7 2. Qgxg7 and black still has moves), so white would lose on time.

@Andrew: Shouldn't the stipulation be 'at least draw'? (2023-07-26)
A.Buchanan: @Joost - could be. Can also think that the stip asks for the minimum White can guarantee (2023-08-09)
