P1007491 hingegen "Loss of tempo"? (2018-10-21)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Mario
Other things in the never-ending Keyword discussion include:
Tempoverlustmanöver is currently called the same in english and french, and has no definitions
Loss of tempo (Tempoverlust in german) is defined as
'With White to play, a sequence of moves to reach the same position with Black to play. (Help game, abbr .: TV)'
which makes little sense in proof games
In this problem [Pe2] goes e2-e3-e4 ('wasting' a move)
In P1007491 [Pc2] similarly goes c2-c3-c4-... and [Lc8] goes (among other things) c8-b7-a6-c8 ('triangulation') (2018-10-21)
Henrik Juel: There are many solutions in 6.0 moves, like
1.Sb1-c3 Sg8-f6 2.Pe2-e4 Sf6xe4 3.Sc3-a4 Se4-c3 4.Ra1-b1 Sc3xb1 5.Sa4-c3 Sb1-a3 6.Sc3-b1 Sa3-c4

In 'Les Tours ...' heißt es: "Après J.Keeble and L.A.Cardozo-Braga".

Dort heißt es: "In justice to Mr. Rowland it must be noted that he undoubtedly can claim priority of publication over Herr Stahl. The Jamaica Gleaner assumed the contrary—in a recent article—upon the strength of a reprint of Mr. Rowland's version by Professor Brownson, but we have personally seen the Dublin Evening Mail of March 4th, and can vouch for the previous appearance of the position there and then.
It is somewhat curious that two of these, no doubt unconscious, reproductions should have occurred to problems crowned or highly commended in the self-same tourney. The Rowland—Stahl case is not quite so startling as the others, although the resemblance is striking enough and, if known in time, might probably have affected the award. ... the slight deviation on move one in these bi-move problems would rather tend to confirm the notion of deliberate piracy, were they the work of authors unknown to fame. We of course entertain no such suspicion and although the name of K. Stahl is almost unknown to us, yet we plainly see the probability that this composer's work was at Buffalo prior to March 4th, as also the utter unlikelihood he could have seen the Dublin Evening Mail of that date. The foregoing expose will undoubtedly not be without its utility, if composers will read aright the two-fold lesson it conveys. Viz :—First. Do not continue to harp upon old themes in a thin disguise. Let "the Bristol" rest in peace, and disturb no more the bones of "the poor Indian" or such used up subjects as the six move flight square two-mover. Second. Only false prophets tell you the future of the problem art points to positions with few pieces and scant variety. On the contrary, that way lies piracy and consequent mortification of spirit!"

First Prize Set Norwich Mercury Echo Tourney 1907 (zusammen mit P1058430)

'ACB': "... Norwich Mercury Model-Mate Echo Tourney of 1907, in which the writer [H.W. Barry] acted as co-judge with Max G. Meyer (since deceased). This tournament attracted world-wide attention, and first prize was won by the beautiful set, A and B, Nos. 1601-1602 (P1058430), in this number, by P. F. Blake of England.
... In order to afford proper appreciation and enjoyment of these "Echo" sets of problems, let it be explained that the condition of the tourney called for the repeating, or echoing, in a three-mover, of "model-mates" occurring in an accompanying two-mover. These "models," contained in the two-mover, were to be strategically repeated in the three-mover."

aus "Sam Loyd and his Chess Problems":
"CHARLES XII. AT BENDER."
The most famous of the Fiske-Loyd stories, and probably the best problem tale ever written, is the sketch: Charles XII. at Bender.
It has appeared in print, since the original publication in the Chess Monthly, in March, 1859, in every conceivable form and language.
In the volume of Fiske's Tales are mentioned the translations into Swedish verse, by J. G. Schultz 1868, into Danish 1876, into Italian by M. Monzecchi 1901, and into Icelandic 1901, and certainly other renderings abound. J. A. Miles put the story into English verse in his Chess Gems, 1860. "Much of the interest attaching to the piece," wrote Mr. Fiske in 1901, "is owing to the problems, which form as it were the gist of the narrative. They were suggested by the writer of the sketch to Mr. Samuel Loyd, the most ingenious and brilliant of all problem composers, who was then in his eighteenth year. The three problems were soon forthcoming, composed in a single afternoon."
The story introduces an imaginary incident during the siege of Charles the Twelfth of Sweden by the Turks at Bender in 1713. Charles beguiled this period by means of drills and chess, and used frequently to play with his minister, Christian Albert Grothusen, some of the contests being mentioned by Voltaire. One day while so engaged, the game had advanced to the stage represented in P1030415, and Charles (White) had just announced mate in three. Scarcely had he uttered the words, when a Turkish bullet, shattering the window, dashed the White Knight off the board in fragments. Grothusen started violently, but Charles, with the utmost coolness, begged him to put back the other Knight and work out the mate, observing that it was pretty enough. But another glance at the board made Charles smile: "We do not need the Knight. I can give it to you, and still mate in four!" (P1037289). Who would believe it, he had barely spoken when a second bullet flew across the room, and the Pawn at h2 shared the fate of the Knight. Grothusen turned pale. "You have our good friends the Turks with you," said the King, unconcerned, "it can scarcely be expected that I should contend against such odds; but let me see if I cannot dispense with that unlucky Pawn. I have it!" he shouted, with a tremendous laugh, "I feel great pleasure in informing you that there is undoubtedly a mate in five" (P1159789). Nor would Charles permit Grothusen to leave till he had solved the problem.
It is perhaps not very remarkable that the minister, fearful of a repetition of such chess battles, left the encampment the next day and joined the Swedes, who took sides with the enemy.
In the original three-mover, F. Amelung has pointed out, in the Baltische Schachblätter, 1900 [Heft 7, S. 274], that if the first bullet had destroyed the Rook instead of the Knight, Charles would have had an equal opportunity of showing his analytical powers by announcing a mate in six (P1159308)!

Mario Richter: Trotz "charset=utf-8" erscheinen jetzt wieder "???...". Deshalb nochmal die Sekundärquelle in transkription: "Isbrannije Sadatschij L.I.Kubbelja" (2011-11-26)

Motto: "Stars and Stripes IIIa"

Das Problem erschien schon in 'American Chess Nuts', 1868, deshalb kann Whites Anmerkung über die Entstehungsgeschichte in 'Sam Loyd and his Chess Problems' nicht stimmen: "True line clearance, in the sense in which Healey used it in his famous Bristol problem of 1861 (P1036903), only occurs in one of Loyd's problems. He defined the theme as that of " withdrawing a piece to a remote quarter, out of play, to allow of the bringing forward of another on the same line " (Str., p. 81). The theme is clearly one in two moves, unless we consider thematic (as many people do) an intermediate move between the clearance and the mate similar to that employed by Healey. Loyd first posed his problem as a three-mover also (No. 498, s.P1055458). His introductory moves served to vacate both the squares b6 and c5 in the final line of mate a7-g1, and in a sense they were thematic, though totally different from Healey's. They were not sufficiently meritorious, however, in his own judgment, to be justified at the cost of the two extra Pawns, and he almost immediately republished the problem as a two-mover (No. 499), in which form it has ever since been known.
Several other two-move renderings of the Rook line clearance, which have been republished at various times under Loyd's name (s. z.B. P1277364), though closely akin to No. 499 in execution, are not by Loyd at all, but are later settings by other composers."

Gemessen an der relativ einfachen Diagrammstellung
erhielten wir ungewöhnlich viele
Fehllösungen. Der Schachschlüssel liegt ja in der
Tat nicht nahe. N.B.: «Weil der Zwilling nichts

ich spare mir die Mühe der Lösungsangabe.==›
