'The Problemist Supplement': "The WCCT tourney of the time required #2s demonstrating changed self-blocks. The judge was Jeremy Morse and F [i.e. dieses Problem] was a clear winner. Set 1…Qxc4 2.Sf3; 1…Sxc4 2.Sc6; 1…Qxe4 2.c3; 1…fxe4 2.Rxd7 but nothing is set for 1…Kxe4. The strong give-and-take key forms a powerful battery. 1.Sxd7! (>2.Sb6) Qxc4 2.Qe5; 1…Sxc4 2.Rxd3; 1…Qxe4 2.Qc5; 1…fxe4 2.Se5 (switchback). This last mate also follows 1…Kxc4. There is no extraneous play and the wRd8 provides full value in both phases – a beautiful work. In his award Jeremy mentions that those few predecessors of which he was aware all suffered from certain shortcomings."

aus "Sam Loyd and his Chess Problems":
"CHARLES XII. AT BENDER."
The most famous of the Fiske-Loyd stories, and probably the best problem tale ever written, is the sketch: Charles XII. at Bender.
It has appeared in print, since the original publication in the Chess Monthly, in March, 1859, in every conceivable form and language.
In the volume of Fiske's Tales are mentioned the translations into Swedish verse, by J. G. Schultz 1868, into Danish 1876, into Italian by M. Monzecchi 1901, and into Icelandic 1901, and certainly other renderings abound. J. A. Miles put the story into English verse in his Chess Gems, 1860. "Much of the interest attaching to the piece," wrote Mr. Fiske in 1901, "is owing to the problems, which form as it were the gist of the narrative. They were suggested by the writer of the sketch to Mr. Samuel Loyd, the most ingenious and brilliant of all problem composers, who was then in his eighteenth year. The three problems were soon forthcoming, composed in a single afternoon."
The story introduces an imaginary incident during the siege of Charles the Twelfth of Sweden by the Turks at Bender in 1713. Charles beguiled this period by means of drills and chess, and used frequently to play with his minister, Christian Albert Grothusen, some of the contests being mentioned by Voltaire. One day while so engaged, the game had advanced to the stage represented in P1030415, and Charles (White) had just announced mate in three. Scarcely had he uttered the words, when a Turkish bullet, shattering the window, dashed the White Knight off the board in fragments. Grothusen started violently, but Charles, with the utmost coolness, begged him to put back the other Knight and work out the mate, observing that it was pretty enough. But another glance at the board made Charles smile: "We do not need the Knight. I can give it to you, and still mate in four!" (P1037289). Who would believe it, he had barely spoken when a second bullet flew across the room, and the Pawn at h2 shared the fate of the Knight. Grothusen turned pale. "You have our good friends the Turks with you," said the King, unconcerned, "it can scarcely be expected that I should contend against such odds; but let me see if I cannot dispense with that unlucky Pawn. I have it!" he shouted, with a tremendous laugh, "I feel great pleasure in informing you that there is undoubtedly a mate in five" (P1159789). Nor would Charles permit Grothusen to leave till he had solved the problem.
It is perhaps not very remarkable that the minister, fearful of a repetition of such chess battles, left the encampment the next day and joined the Swedes, who took sides with the enemy.
In the original three-mover, F. Amelung has pointed out, in the Baltische Schachblätter, 1900 [Heft 7, S. 274], that if the first bullet had destroyed the Rook instead of the Knight, Charles would have had an equal opportunity of showing his analytical powers by announcing a mate in six (P1159308)!

Henrik Juel: Mario, many of the years in your english text are rendered in a funny way, with i or I instead of 1 and o instead of 0, e.g. 'into Italian by M. Monzecchi igoi', where igoi probably means 1901 (2022-05-23)
Mario Richter: Thanks, Henrik! Seems that my automatic spell-checker didn't recognise these "funny" words as questionable ... (2022-05-24)
Henrik Juel: Great story, thanks for fixing the typos, Mario (2022-05-25)

Nachdruck in 'The Problemist Supplement' innerhalb eines Artikels von Robert A. Lincoln zum Thema "Black Pawn Promotion in the Miniature", zur Aufgabe heißt es dort: "Not only does No. 9 have an obvious start, but only two mates arise. Nevertheless, this example demonstrates a unique property. 1.Rh2 (-) takes up station to vanquish successively 1. ... e1Q 2. Rc2 or 1. ... e1S 2. Qb2. These responses flip-flop when alternate capture divergences arise: 1. ... exd1Q 2. Qb2 and 1. ... exd1S 2. Rc2. This is a very unusual treatment of reciprocal correction."

Felber, Volker: The Problemist Supplement nennt im Nachdruch "Rosario" Aspa, Illustrated London News 1841 (2022-06-21)
Mario Richter: Datum prüfen - 1841 kann nicht stimmen.
Wikipedia: Die erste Ausgabe der Illustrated London News erschien am 14. Mai 1842 (2022-06-22)
athulin: The first problem by 'Signor Aspa' in I.L.N. is in 1853. I can find no #2 by Aspa in I.L.N. in the period 1842-1879, and other problems by Aspa only between 1853--1869 in the same period. (I'm reasonably sure that covers both diagrams and enigmas.) (2022-06-23)
Mario Richter: Some biographical data of Rosario Aspa can be found in the 'British Chess Magazine' 10/1897, pp.357-362, where, amongst other facts, one can read that Aspa started his problem making "early in the fifties". (2022-06-24)

White schreibt in 'Tasks & Echoes': "Here we have another type of consecutive White piece journeys quite different from the Merry-Go-Rounds ... No. 11 is a well placed example of the Staircase theme, though by no means the earliest in date. The White Queen starts from the ground floor of her house, and goes slowly upstairs to the very top. She then throws herself out of the window to the street below, possibly with a view to suicide; and surprises herself as much as anybody else to find that by so doing she has really succeeded in mating her old enemy, the Black King, who has been kicking his heels on the street corner."
In "Tasks & Echos" mit der Forderung '#12' veröffentlicht. Ebenso im Schach-Echo 1936.

s.a. die Miniaturfassung P1139596 .

Weiterer Nachdruck in "Mitchell's Guide to the game of chess" (1915, S.81)

156. Df1+ Ke4? 157.d3+ Kd5 158.Dxf5+ Kc6 159.De6+ Kb7 160.Db6+ Ka8/Kc8 161.Da6#/Dc7+
158. ... Se5 159.Dxe5+ Kc6 160.Dc7 Kb5/Kd5 161.Db6#/Dd6#

Richtig ist:

156.Df1+ Kg4! 157.De2+ Tf3 158.De6+ Tf5 159.Kd1 a3 160.Kc1 Kf3

Die Lösungsangabe wurde korrigiert. (2022-07-16)

Dr. Andreas Reinhard: I think after 182. Df1+ Ke4?? 183. d3 is #5 (2022-07-15)
Olaf Jenkner: Die Lösung war falsch angegeben, im Morsebuch steht sie korrekt.

182. Df1+ Ke4? 183.d3+ Kd5 184.Dxf5+ Kc6 185.De6+ Kb7 186.Db6+ Ka8/Kc8 187.Da6#/Dc7+
184. ... Se5 185.Dxe5+ Kc6 186.Dc7 Kb5/Kd5 187.Db6#/Dd6#

Richtig ist:

182.Df1+ Kg4! 183.De2+ Tf3 184.De6+ Tf5 185.Kd1 a3 186.Kc1 Kf3 ...

Der Dual ist zwar ärgerlich, er ändert aber nichts an der Korrektheit, denn die Variante 195.Df1+ Kg4 ist dualfrei. (2022-07-16)

Vaclav Kotesovec: A year ago I tried to solve this problem with Gustav 4.2a, but after 8 days I had to stop testing, the estimated time was into the thousands of hours. Now, with the new version 4.2c (thank you, Olaf!) I was able to use the entire 384 GB memory on my computer and after more than 117 hours was possible the full test of this problem. It is correct! Fantastic result at the limit of current computing and software capabilities! (2023-02-14)

correct version of P0555591
Viktoras Paliulionis: I changed to "after TR Dawson" because that's the usual heading for such cases in other sources and databases. All databases should use unified headings for problems. "Correction", "version", and "after ..." are different things. (2021-02-23)
Viktoras Paliulionis: The person who corrected the problem or submitted a version of it is not considered a co-author; the name of the first author with a note (version ..., or correction ...) should remain above the diagram. If the problem is sufficiently reworked (as this problem), only the new author is indicated with a note "after ...". (2021-02-23)
A.Buchanan: Hi Viktoras,
Thanks for your interest in this. Oh dear, there are several things to unpack here.
(0) I do follow the Codex as exactly as possible, however...
(1) The list of names above a PDB entry is NOT necessarily a list of equal co-authors. There is no separate PDB field to record the persons who correct or improve a problem. If the names only appear in other (pure text) fields, (a) you can't validate them against the author table and (b) you can't search for them properly. So the names at the top indicate only that these individuals were associated with the problem, and in all the problems which I've ever touched the "after" field then clarifies who did what, if that's necessary, e.g. "TRD, version GF".
(2) It was genuinely an "after TRD", then it's right that TRD wouldn't appear as a name at the top.
(3) However in this case, Geoff made the new version, and was also the magazine editor. If Geoff chose to show TRD the respect of publishing his new idea as a version, then we in PDB have absolutely no right to tamper with that. Similarly, there may be cases where we disagree with what the original author and the improver have agreed together, or what an improver has unilaterally decided. But in PDB we should just report what was actually published. If you feel strongly that a classification is inappropriate, take it up with the composers first rather than going behind their backs, as you apparently have here.
(4) In many cases there is a welcome blurring over time. If "PQ, version RS" exists, then what happens if TU comes along and makes a new version? I've never seen a situation of "PQ, version RS, version TU". Pickiness of fractional ownership just doesn't matter for these things. Particularly for retros, one often finds a bunch of names all together. It's essential that each names be there, but implying a tug-of-war for fractional ownership would just be too tedious, and people often don't bother. (2021-02-23)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Andrew, of course, the database must provide accurate information. My notes:
1. In Winchloe (Christian Poisson is always very accurate in presenting information), above the diagram of this problem it says: Jeffrey Foster, after Thomas R. Dawson, The Problemist 2017. Above diagram of problem Pxxxx is written: Thomas R. Dawson, correction A. Buchanan, The Problemist 1944 (v). (Note: correction: The Problemist Supplement 2017).
2. I think Christian Poisson is right, because in the magazine there is only one author listed above each diagram.
3. How can other people know that not only the author can be specified in the "author" field?
4. Associated individuals should be noted in some other fields, because problems can be reprinted (copy-pasted) in other sources with incorrect information.
5. Instead of "PQ, RS version, TU version", it should be "PQ, TU version".
6. "The correction should be published as a joint composition only if A agrees" (codex).
7. "Bunch of names all together" often occur when they all contribute to the creation together rather than after a single author’s publication. (2021-02-23)
Viktoras Paliulionis: Mentioned problem number is P1345892. (2021-02-23)
A.Buchanan: Sorry that this is long.
PDB is not WinChloe, which has a different data model, and unilateral decisions are made by one person.
PDB is looser, a shared artifact, and is under-documented. Fields and keywords are used in varying ways. In everything I have done I have aimed for an individual’s contributions to problems to be accessible fairly, never over-stating their role.
In PDB this can only be via the “a” field and then detailed annotation elsewhere in a text field. Sometimes in the past the “comment” field has been used by people foe this but I always use the “after” field. Otherwise it is impossible to track people’s involvement and this seems to me hugely unfair, far worse than some trivial confusion over roles for what are generally not earth-shaking problems.
Ideally there would be roles of “corrector”, “versioner” etc in PDB but that’s not the case, so we have to model things with what we have.
In any area of PDB data modelling (e.g. keywords), I try identifying stakeholders and their needs and interests, and how best to serve them. Here they are old and new composers, readers, searchers, etc.
It is of course not the case that PQ v TU would always be the answer. It depends. Your suggested approach is Procrustean - we need something softer and kinder here. :-) The rules in the Codex as specified are simply not scalable to multiple applications. This is independent of the fact that PDB does not represent these rules directly.
We are not talking about album-level problems usually, we are talking about the humble, organic sharing of constructions which to me is the lifeblood of chess problem composition particularly for the newcomers who I try to introduce to PDB from social media. Let’s not over-complicate! Thanks :-) (2021-02-23)
A.Buchanan: Sorry for length, but want a single place to log my current position.
I spend some time correcting cooked old problems which are otherwise of little interest. I enjoy the connection with history, and am scrupulous never to overstate my contribution (although personally I feel that a manual correction may sometimes be more worthy than one simply using without acknowledgement a computer program to trawl for optimal arrangements of pieces). I have an open request with YACPDB to recognize roles and dependencies in their data model. I have also requested through MatPlus that WFCC regularize the unsatisfactory Codex clause handling this area, however due to well-known disruptions in the world, this has not yet happened. It is particularly an issue where the original author is deceased. But other issues are (1) non-scalability of versions (2) unilateral "aftering" (3) lack of documentation of the implications of versioning (e.g. FIDE Album) (4) consistent annotation of versions (sources, dates) etc (5) knock-on effect that databases then don't have a clear model to implement.
A little shocked to read here that Christian Poisson apparently changed a published assignment from "TRD, v GF" to "GF, after TRD". This is not what the corrector (also the editor in this case) chose to publish. While I applaud Christian's terrific work over the years, I think this example shows why it's essential to have multiple databases, so that one perspective does not predominate, and that history is not rewritten. This one is my favorite in the series
Why not add white king somewhere to make the position legal? (2020-12-11)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik. There are now about 100 homebase h# compositions in PDB, following an article I wrote in TPS a couple of years ago, and the legal length limit seems to be about 6.0 moves. Since wK is very good at enabling cooks beyond that point, it's interesting and funny to see what happens if he is removed. The homebase criterion however is paramount, so I absolutely can't just stick wK somewhere else. If I remember properly, Geoff did find out-of-the-way places to stick wK for the other three compositions, but not for this one. As a retro enthusiast, obviously I love the fractal landscape of legal positions, but by the same token, I see nothing wrong with thematic illegality: illegality never prevents one from playing forwards if one is calm about it. And it opens the door to an otherwise inaccessible region of design space, with novel king-free mating patterns. Can anyone push the length further, or find any homebase h# with a bishop promotion? (2020-12-12)
Henrik Juel: Now I understand what is going on
I do not care much about Codex issues, but for some reason I dislike illegal positions for regular problems
Possibly this should be categorized as a fairy problem
Solution
1. Lh3 gxh3 2. g5 h4 3. g4 h5 4. g3 h6 5. g2 h7 6. g1=D h8=D+ 7. Dg8 Dh3 8. Df7 Dc8# (2020-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for you perspective, Henrik.
Surely some might consider white king as a fairy condition. As you implicitly point out while the *effect* is no white king, there can be multiple *justifications*, just one of which is the direct fairy condition (nowk). As a composer, I chose a different explanation: illegal position. These positions are exactly as illegal as a position with wPb1 & wBa1. In both situations, we can prove there is no sequence of legal moves from the initial game array (PAS). And in both situations we can simply play forward chess, with no issue. Obviously I love retrograde analysis, which has the fractal landscape of legal positions as its bedrock. But it's nice to look at the other side sometimes, and I find it odd that some other people are nervous about doing that.
The distinction between justification and effect wasn't clear to me until recently. Other examples are Bosma & Dummy Pawn. An instance of either may be a joke or a fairy problem. Dummy pawn might also be due to illegal position, or it might be a historical problem, or a contemporary problem set in a previous historical period (which would not make it fairy, it would just have an invalid timestamp).
You may consider threats and set play 20 times a day, but never worry about the legality of the positions in which those moves are playable. And that's because the laws extend smoothly to such illegal positions (except for certain corner cases, and even those can be worked out with a little trying). But even if you found that a threat was in a position from which White couldn't actually have the move, you wouldn't care. So in this area you accept illegality. Orthodox problems couldn't exist without the principle that the laws work happily in illegal positions. It's like mathematics & complex numbers.
The Codex is surprisingly astute about illegality. An illegal position does not prevent soundness: the only stated downside is it *might* not be acceptable to a tourney. The Codex also says that illegal and fairy positions do not normally support retrograde analysis. Although, these days fairy retro analysis exists. The implication in any case is that from the fairy position, illegality and fairy concepts are distinct.
For me, the position is just a node in a graph which happens to be inaccessible from the start node. It's horribly inefficient to have to invoke a specific fairy condition out of so many. Much cleaner and more satisfying to say, well we are in that inaccessible node, so let's play chess. (2020-12-12)
