Henrik Juel: Natch 3.1 tests the first 20.0 moves OK in 13 seconds, but the first 20.5 moves would take more than an hour, and the entire problem more than a couple of hours, because of the possibility of [Pd7] promoting
So we may never know for sure whether this proof game with 16 oscillations by Ta8 is correct (2018-12-08)
Mario Richter: Henrik, I think certainty about the correctness of this problem can be achieved, if we take into account that Black's last move must have been a capture. (2018-12-10)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: the times you propose for testing don't seem outrageous, even without Mario's sensible heuristic. Also, the last move must have been DxLd7 from one of 5 squares only. (2018-12-12)
Reto: Stelvio is now able to retract moves and solve the resulting problems individually. That helps a lot here, but still, the 5 reasonable last move retractions took over 13h in total to solve. (2023-06-11)

Black cannot steal the move, as White can prevent the castling justification.
A.Buchanan: Ingenious play, but Black cannot execute the castling. Lines include a good try, checkmate by Black and pat by Black. (2022-04-16)
A.Buchanan: There are two kinds of directmate Type Keym. In one White successfully pushes the move to Black, in the other (as here) Black unsuccessfully pulls it. (2022-04-17)
Ladislav Packa: The logic of this problem is foreign to me, but it is incorrect: 2.Bxe6 Rg6+ 3.Kf5 0-0 (2022-04-18)

A.Buchanan: The final position in Kees' solution has wTf6 which must be promoted. This could have been wBb, which captured e.g. bBa5, bBb6 e.p., bLa7, bSb8.
wTf7 is also promoted, and might be sBh having capturing wBg5, wBh6 e.p., wLg2, wTh1. sBfxLg6 completes the picture. I don't see any difficult captures e.g. of S remaining, so the position looks to be legal. (2022-02-16)

n in directmate stipulation #n means that White has n moves to do the job. With n=1.5, therefore, one of the White moves is fractional, so we know we are in the realm of jokes, ho ho!

If White's first move is the fractional one, there are three retro tries which attempt to complete: castling, ep & promotion. However all are illegal:
castling: 8 white pawns, so wTa5 came from h1, dislodging wK.
ep: retracting sBc5 to c7 means wLb8 is promoted, but 8 white pawns.
promotion: white made 7 pawn captures, while sBgh were waylaid.

So we consider that White's second move was the fractional one, by omitting the replacement of wBf8 by an officer.
Henrik Juel: Completing the key isn't legal, 1.'Rd1'/'-bPc5'/'e8S'+, but omitting the promotion in the mating move is, 1.Sxe7+ Bxe7 2.'f8'#. Excellent joke. (2003-09-19)
James Malcom: A very witty joke Valladao! (2020-09-24)
A.Buchanan: Really like this joke (2020-09-25)
Henrik Juel: To see the illegality of completing 1.fxe8=S+?, note the captures:
Black captured fxDe, so [Pg7,h7] were captured on their files, while the other six missing black men were captured by white pawns
The illegality of completing 1.0-0-0,bxc6ep? is rather obvious (2020-09-26)
James Malcom: And for those you don't find it obvious: If the White king hasn't moved, then where did wRa5, and wBb8 if bPb5 has just done a double-step, come from? Neither can be promoted pieces, as White still has all eight pawns. Trying to finish castling and en passant therefore both produce illegal positions and thus cannot be the solution. (2020-09-26)
Henrik Juel: Continuing beating the dead horse...
How does the white player actually perform an entire move?
1.0-0-0+: Ke1-c1 and Ta1-d1
1.bxc6ep+: Pb5-c6 and remove sPc5
1.fxe8=S+: remove sYe8 and Pf7-e8 and replace wPe8 with wSe8 (three fractional actions)
2.f8=Y#: Pf7-f8 and replace wPf8 with wYf8
So a marginally better stipulation might be: 'White to move mates in less than 2 moves' (2020-09-26)
A.Buchanan: Hurray I've got the animation working! I agree with Henrik's stipulation. There is a dummy pawn on f8, but not by the Dummy Pawn rule. Instead it's the joke that does it. If Dummy Rule applied, the move would be full length! :) (2022-02-09)

Wo wurden die sSS geschlagen?
Korrekturversion zu P1390921, erschienen in der 'Schwalbe', Heft 205 (02/2004), S. 371
Henrik Juel: Seems cooked by -1... Qh7 -2.h3:S Se3 -3.h2 Sf5 -4.a2 Sg7 -5.d2! Qh8 -6.Bh7 Qe8 -7.Bg8 h7:Q -8.Qe4 g6:S -9.Sg3 Kh5 -10.Sf1 Sf5 -11.Kg7 Sd4 etc. Is the diagram correct? (2003-11-04)
James Malcom: How is that a cook? (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: It is not, James
I suspect that Gerd changed the diagram position on 2004-02-29, but clicking on 'more...' reveals nothing (2021-06-18)
A.Buchanan: I can't find this one in WinChloe (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Issue no. 198 is not available on the Schwalbe home page, but no. 201 with solutions is, and the solution to problem 11719 starts with R: 1... Dh7-h8+, so the PDB diagram has been changed for sure; cooks are also given (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Now I see below
Reprints: 11719v ...
so this diagram is probably for an author correction, which should be labeled 11719v (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: Yes, the authors have corrected, as stated in no. 205 p. 371
If you would like to solve the corrected problem yourself, you might want a hint:
the answer to the stipulation question is c1 and e8 (2021-06-18)
Henrik Juel: and now Mario has updated, so all comments can be hidden... (2021-06-18)
Mario Richter: Henrik, another place you can consult to find some 'Schwalbe' Retros, is the janko.at websitem here: https://www.janko.at/Retros/Schwalbe/N198.htm

Btw., for historical completeness I've added the original version. My approach with corrections: if the changes are small (e.g. add a black pawn ob a6, place wS on g2 instead of g6,etc.) and the correction has been published (chronological) "near" the original, only the corrected version is added with a comment in the comment field, explaining the correction (originally published without black pawn a6, with wS on g6 instead of g2) and when the correction appeared.
If the changes in the diagram are massive and/or the time between the publication of original and corrected version is large, both versions get an entry in the PDB. (2021-06-18)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario - and I completely agree with your approach (2021-06-19)

A.Buchanan: There is a good try here. It seems that there are two possible pawn histories. In the one in the given solution, wBef cross-capture, while wBah are waylaid (= captured by officers on their own original files). In the other, sBef cross-capture, while wBah capture to promote. In the latter case, could sS or sT uncapture a white officer which, following various parity-fixing adventures, unpromotes on b8, and then gives White the necessary tempi? The Black cross-capture would have been wBe2-6 sBf7-f6xe5 wBf2-f7 sBe7xf6-f5. I could imagine a situation with sSd8, sTc8, wDb7. Then R: 1. Db8-b7 a7-a6 2. b7-b8=D Tb8-c8 3. a6xSb7 Sc5-b7 4. In this line, wPh3 was not waylaid, so can't get that extra critical tempo. a3-a4 is not possible because then wTa1 could never have escaped its home. (2022-01-24)

Henrik Juel: diagram error: 3 kings (2023-05-22)
A.Buchanan: I think it’s meant to be Da7 (2023-05-23)
A.Buchanan: Assuming Qa7, 16 pawns require 8 captures to shuffle left, which exhausts all missing pieces. Rd1 is delivering check, and since it didn’t capture, it must have just castled. So wPc2d2e2f2. To explain Ba8, must be wPb7. So wPa2b3 bPa6b5. wPb7 is Volet pawn and given that both light-squared bishops remain, at most one more capture by White is possible. Either e7 or g7 must be White, to have released bBf8, so it can only be wPg7. So all pawns are known. Other pieces are all white except Ba8 or Bc6. If Bc6 were White then Black’s prior move exNd5 does not give White a move because of illegal check from Bc6. So Ba8 is White, Bc6 is Black. (2023-05-23)
Henrik Juel: Good analysis, Andrew
So with Da7 the coloring is
Black: Kh1 Lc6 Pa6,b5,c7,d5,d7,e7,g6,h2 (10)
White: the rest (14)
White captured h6xLg7 and g2xf3xe4xd5xc6xb7
Black captured f7xSe6xSd5
The retroplay is R: 1.0-0-0+ e6xSd5 etc. (2023-05-23)
A.Buchanan: As is often the case, when one fixes a PDB diagram error, one finds that the correct problem already existed in PDB. I deleted it, since it contained no detailed solution. (2023-05-23)
