Die (Loydsche) englische Version der Forderung zielt nicht auf Eindeutigkeit ab: "Find how a stalemate might result in ten moves."

in 'Ruy Lopez' abgedruckt in der Rubrik "Partidas de fantasia"
AB: Not quite unique alas. 4 Dxc7 & 5 h4 can be transposed. (2001-10-17)
Kostas Prentos: Besides the minor transposition, there's another totally different solution:
1.c4 d5 2.Db3 Lf5 3.Dxb7 h5 4.Dxa7 Lh7 5.Dxb8 Ta6 6.h4 Th6 7.Dxc7 f6 8.Dxd8+ Kf7 9.Dxd5+ Kg6 10.De6= with many duals, too (2002-07-03)
AB: Yes, I was referring to uniqueness of proof game to reach the diagram position. KP responds to the task which appears here as the stipulation. (2002-07-07)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: What is the most simple stipulation that makes the solution unique?

My candidate: "Shortest game ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move"

I would add the length of the composer's solution as a courtesy to solvers: "Game in less than 10.0 moves ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move" (2012-08-27)
A.Buchanan: Hi YBZ: the proof game that Kostas gave 5bnr/4p1pb/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR has 12 solutions. 1.c3 gives another 12 solutions. And there's 2 solutions for Loyd. Out of these 26 indeed only one has the property that Wh gets all pawn moves out of the way before 4th move. But it's just occurred to me that there's a variant of Loyd which begins 1.c3 and wQ develops via a4 & a5, ending with 5bnr/4p1pq/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR this has 15 solutions, and in 6 of these, Wh plays both pawn moves as moves 1 or 2. Similarly if 1.c4. This only differs from Prentos' solution in the occupant of h7. So the suggested stipulation alas wouldn't work. I am pretty sure i have seen a longer version which is sound as a PG. (2020-05-28)
A.Buchanan: See P1004131 for a longer sound PG. (2020-05-28)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cook noted above means that a more elaborate secondary condition is needed. My suggestion:
"PG that is shortest to end in Stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and White plays 2 consecutive captures that are each longer than 2 squares".
An alternative is to accept the transposition:
"PG that is shortest to end in stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and wPc2 does not move, 2 variants". (2020-06-07)
A.Buchanan: Is it known that there are no h=n.5 (or h=n half-duplex) from the game array for n9? (2022-07-13)
A.Buchanan: I read Loyd’s stipulation more as a hard task for composers than a fair ask of solvers. Loyd was a genius so of course he came up with a great answer. Adding a latter-day secondary condition to give an arbitrary uniqueness is no help to solvers, and has an aesthetic price. I imagine that Loyd’s withering reaction - as he generally favoured conceptual elegance over rigorous dual elimination. Non-unique PGs are a bit old-fashioned, but they still have their place and James Malcom proves a master at their efficient construction. I wish that YBZ was still with us to possibly contest my point, RIP. (2022-07-13)

Konstruktionspreisausschreiben 'Die Schwalbe' 06/1973 Heft 21 S. 54,
Thema I (Dr. W. Dittmann):

A.Buchanan: In order to (H)C+ a non-unique proof game, one should show there is no short solution, but also that all solutions of regular length exhibit the intended theme, whatever that was. As long as any strategy can be checked for compliance, Stelvio fine because one can set the parameter for Stelvio to make sure that all strategies are considered. But it’s not possible currently to view all transpositions of a strategy, if that matters (2023-04-09)

James Malcom: I do not find this in there. (2021-02-18)
A.Buchanan: Yes, I see now. I had thought that Alain's paper was comprehensive for its time, but I guess not. The "Number of last moves" space is a good candidate to be put in a PDB page, like the "first move" page. That's pretty easy to do, based on the structure that Alain has given, but some scholarship is required first to validate what the last records are 10 years on, for the different cases. For example there's Thierry Le Glueher's extensions of Gyula Breyer's stupendous matrix. Those are already in PDB. Should also reach out to the Usual Suspects to ask what they've done which should be included. I don't think that Alain is active in this particular area right now. Any volunteers to own it? :) I have too much going on right now to own this, but I am happy to support e.g. by searching WinChloe, proof-reading etc. There are some magnificent problems here: this is worth doing. Thema III (J. Haas)

Automatische Zugfolge (No-brainer)
PS 23 November: Some readers wondered (I did, too) whether the position of the 10-move no-brainer is legal. It is, says Elkies: "One pawn capture on a side yields three promotable pawns (a6xb7 and c3xd2, with White promoting bbc and Black add); and two piece captures on a side give four more promoting pawns (e6xf7, g6xh7, promote ffhh; f3xe2, h3xg2, promote eegg)."
Henrik Juel: The position is indeed legal, but Noam's explanation of seven white and seven black promotions might be clarified
By 'pawn capture' he means PxP, and by 'piece capture' he means that an officer is captured by a pawn
e6xLf7 and g6xLh7 are not both possible here, as the two missing black officers have different square colors, but the latter capture could be g5xLh6 after Black has played Ph7-h5 (2018-11-02)

correction of P1298046
Henrik Juel: 21 consecutive checks; unfortunately, the position is illegal.
White never captured, while black pawns captured six times by axbxcxd, b7xc6, c7xd6, and h7xg6; but [Pf2] could not have been captured.
Nowadays it is rare to see an illegal prize winner, so the diagram may be incorrect (Pg2?) (2015-02-25)
Henrik Juel: Now I see that Jacques, in his comment to P1298046, gave this position, so my last sentence does not apply (2015-02-25)
Henrik Juel: The illegality is even 'worse' than I first thought, because [Pe2] could not have been captured either (2015-02-27)
James Malcom: I think it would be nice to have a legal version of this record. To do this, I propose we shorten the solution until a legal position is reached.

A #9 with 33B2N1/qrrp1ppn/1Ppp1np1/2QN2k1/3PKR2/8/b2p2P1/8 seems legal, no? (2021-02-06)

Original-Quelle lt. Autor: "Fairy Chess Problems, 11/1979"
A.Buchanan: Our Codex, says in Article 6 Special Types:
Additionally, and independent from the classification according to Article 5 [the regular genres: studies, directmates, helpmates & selfmates] there are a number of special types, including:
(a) Retroanalytical chess compositions
(b) Mathematical chess compositions
(c) Constructional chess compositions
But we don't have constructional chess problems as a class. Instead these are miserably and arbitrarily scattered across fairies, retro, mathematics and blank. Effectively the genre gives 0 information, and as a result they are hard to find. There aren't many constructional problems, but why not put them in the box that Nature & the Codex Committee designed for them. Yes they need to be legal, but as we well know, "legality does not a retro make". What do you think? Shall we ask Gerd to create a new genre for these? (2023-08-15)
James Malcom: That feels apt, yes. (2023-08-16)
A.Buchanan: Thanks James - you may have seen the Discord discussion on this in the *new* construction-tasks thread. Of course in PDB there have been a couple of keywords (construction tasks/records) used inconsistently. But that doesn't mean there shouldn't be a genre.
Also, suggest that the stipulation should not give the game away. A #2 with knight-wheel would not blurt "knight-wheel" in the stipulation. Here another bad effect of the lack of genre is that the thematic content is given as the stipulation. I don't know whether the stip here is actually then one used in the article, but we can keep it as "originalforderung". However for solving I suggest the stip should be the neutral "What is curious about this position?" This is in keeping with normal practice of providing the diagram & asking the solver to figure out the theme. (2023-08-17)

Find a diagram which can recur a maximum number of times, such that it also has a unique KBP (shortest proof game) to its first occurrence.
a) with 3-fold repetition & 50-move rules
b) with 5-fold repetition & 75-move rules
a) e.g. 1. a4 e5 2. a5 e4 3. a6 Sxa6 4. f4
b) e.g. 1. e3 a5 2. La6 e6 3. Se2
play all play one stop play next play all
a) 22 occurrences possible, with 44.5 moves, so no issue with 50-move rule even if it were mandatory.
b) 37 occurrences possible, with 74.0 moves + 0.5 for 3. Se2 in proof game.
The theoretical maximum of 42 is impossible, because it would take 84.5 moves, breaching the mandatory 75-move rule.
Other shortest unique SPGs are possible, but need:
(1) both sides have at least 2 of K,R & R able to move.
(2) both sides must have officer to triangulate.
(3) (for player on the move) triangulating officer must be B or Q.
(4) (for 3+50 case only) e.p. set up.

Add all remaining units for a legal position with no unit attacking an enemy unit.
We must have one WP and one BP per column, the BPs being above the WPs since no capture occurred.
On the c column the WP cannot be on c2, where it would attack the square d3 where a black shield would be needed
to protect from BQe4, and BP cannot be on c7 to c5, thus we have WPc3 and BPc4.
This implies that on column b we have BPb3 and WPb2, then due to BPb3 the only possibility on
column a is WPa3 and BPa4.
Now let us look at the shield needed to protect WRb7 from the attack of BQ e4: a black piece on c6 is not
possible, so we must have a black piece on d5. It cannot be a BN which would attack WQb6 or a BB which
still would attack WRb7, and the BK and BRs already are elsewhere, so we have BPd5. We then deduce that
we have WPd2, and this forces WBc1 which has not moved from the game.
We need another shield to protect BPb3 from the attack of WQb6. Now that WBb4 is no more possible since this
bishop is still home, the only possibility is WNb5.
We cannot have a black piece on e3, hence no white piece on e2 and from this we deduce that we have
WPd6 and BPd7. The only possible shield to protect WPe6 from the attack of BQe4 is BNe5 (BBe5 would attack WPc3).
Now we also need a shield on c7 to protect BPd7 from the attack of WRb7, and the only possibility is WKc7.
On the f column we have WPf2 which is the only possibility.
More difficult to see, the only possibility for light squared WB is WBh5. To see this we must acknowledge
that g2 will contain a black piece as a shield and that other squares are attacked and no shield will help:
WBb1 is not possible because no shield can be put in-between it and BQe4, and WBe8 is not possible
since no B piece can be placed in b8-d8 as a shield.
Let's suppose that we have WPh4, then two black shields are needed on on g2 and h3 to
protects WPf2 and WPh4 from BRh2, but one of this shield would be the light squared BB
and the other one would be the remaining BN which would attack on of the WPs.
Thus our hypothesis is wrong, and we have WPh6 then BPh7.
We deduce then that we have BPg5 then WPg3.
What we said about the black shields on g2 and h3 (to protect WBh5 this time)
still holds, but this time we have a possibility which is BNg2 and BBh3.
BBf6 is the only possible square for dark squared BB. Thus we have BPf5.
WNd1 is the only possible square for the remaining WN.
Last we have two possibilities for the remaining WR, namely a1 and f1.
But since WPa3, WPb2, WPd2, WBc1 forms a well know retro-analytical cage
from which the WR cannot have escaped, we know that we have WRa1.
