Urdruck-Jahr unklar. Die meisten Quellen (incl. 'Comoedia', '2345 Chess Problems' und vor allem 'Crumbs from the Chess-board by C.A.Gilberg himself!') geben "Danbury News 1881" als Originalquelle an.
A.Buchanan: The half-pinned bQ threatens to capture wRd1, and to check wK an unprovided check if wR shifts. Therefore, look for keys which protect wRd1. The "pins" targeting e6 are very suspicious, and suggest that wQ must move to allow bK to retreat there. Must be possible to extend this idea to 4 pinned pieces covering f5, although mating piece would have to be pawn. (2016-11-24)
athulin: The date of the tournament should be 1877 -- The first Danbury News Tourney (in distinction from their earlier buying problems) concerned problems sent in between August and September of 1877.
(See Hartford Times for the date 1887-08-02 at www.chessarch.com in the excavations section).

As only one prize was offered for #2 and one for #3, it may be clearer to describe the award as
'best #2' or 'prize #2', as the '1.' seems to suggests there may be additional prizes (2. 3., ... and so on) (2022-04-20)
athulin: Sorry ... See Hartford Times for the date *1877-08-02* ... (2022-04-20)

The Chess contents are so thoroughly good in every way that we recommend our readers to write for a copy ..."

[ACM]: "A marked specialty of his work, which will serve as a faithful index of his style, is his constant predilection to elaborate the powers and functions of the pawn. This peculiarity, conjoined with an active use of the white king, can be traced through many of his finest problems. We will venture to illustrate with a few examples, commencing with the first prize winner of the Wanderer tourney, Milwaukee, 1887."

athulin: Again, to avoid confusion it may be better to state that
it was a prize shared with S. D. Sturgis, and T. Taverner (another
problem).

First publ. Chess Journal, i. 121 (Mar., 1889), p. 79, tourney prb. 79.

Two of the judges noted the similarity with Loyd's problem:
Carpenter considered it was legitimate, and gave it 1 pr, Elson
considered it based on Loyd's problem, and not entitled to any

athulin: a) This problem won the *first* prize .
b) The tourney book reprints the problem *mirrored,*( i.e. with wKf8.
c) The tourney was a correction tourney, so this is a *correction* of a problem printed
in Chess Journal up to June 1871. Thus, Carpenter is not the sole author but unfortunately
the tourney book does not identify the original of which this is a correction. (I
suspect it might be a correction of E. H Courtenay's attempt at correcting Alexandre's #2 nr. 1,
