James Malcom: It seems to me that this masterful problem is cooked, because the final position is illegal?! (2020-11-07)
Henrik Juel: The animation does yield an illegal position (with wD enclosed on g8)
I believe that the retroplay is incorrect
It gives the uncastling earlier than stipulated (2020-11-07)
James Malcom: Yes, the retorplay is actually 49 moves, not 50-I based it on han's now hidden comment. However, without access to rhe relevant issue of Die Schwalbe-it is not on Vaclav's link page-I know not or can guess the true solution, but surely it is on the same as the current pseudo-try. (2020-11-08)
James Malcom: Wait-I think that the solution is that it must be Black to move first! Just figured this out after last comment. Lemme try out the retro animation. (2020-11-08)
James Malcom: And indeed it does work! Having Black move first later saves them from an illegal tempo move that encloses the White queen from an illegal cage drom which it can never escape. A very exquisite trap for any retro solver! (2020-11-08)

Henrik Juel: C+ Popeye 4.61 after analysis (2020-10-30)
A.Buchanan: A very harmonious problem. Suppose that both sides retain castling rights. wLh3 is obtrusive, so wBf/h promoted via g7, and escaped via e6 so sBe6 came from d7 later. Wh has made at least 4 pcs, while Bl has made 2 (D & Lc) dxe6, gxh6. If last move was dxe6, then sD & sLc were captured by officers in cage. Thus sBf was captured by wB, and therefore promoted on f1, disrupting wK. Therefore the last move was h6-h5. In (a) there is no problem retaining both castling rights, but in (b) Sg8 must have reached that square via f6 *after* the promotion, disrupting bK. However in (b) the castling rights are incompatible. In (a) 1. 0-0? Lxc5! 1. Tf1!, while in (b) the reverse.
Neither twin is a PRA problem: in (a) there is no conflict between the castling, while in (b) RS applies: the pre-emptive Wh castling means we are in a reality where Bl cannot castle. (2020-10-31)

Gerd Wilts (2001-10-17): The retro play given in the solution serves only to justify that it may indeed be White's turn. The forward play indeed starts with 1. Bf7. The idea of TRD was to compose a problem which is legal but in which one of the knights must be a promoted pawn. TRD called this an "obtrusive Knight".

Ladislav Packa: Of course I know the idea a posteriori. But let my heresy be forgiven - I do not consider it logical. In this particular example, I consider e.p. for proof that black can castling - not vice versa. (2019-08-29)
A.Buchanan: Hi Ladislav. If ep is ok, then Black just moved a pawn with double hop. That doesn't stop Black having e.g. moved bK right at the beginning of the game. So you can't prove that Black definitely can castle this way. What am I missing here? (2019-08-29)
Ladislav Packa: Your statement is perfectly fine. However, the AP condition is usually interpreted as castling is evidence of e.p. However, the second party does not have to do castling - the possibility has already been demonstrated by the existence of e.p. (2019-08-29)
A.Buchanan: Hi again Ladislav. Please try again, I am obviously being very stupid. I don't understand how 1. exd6ep is any more indicative that Black can castle than 1. K~. (2019-08-30)
Ladislav Packa: Hi, Andre!
e.p. is just a result of the d7-d5 move. Black can castle only if it was the last move of black (even without wPe5). Therefore, it does not have the logic of joining the e.p. with castling. For example, ask yourself if black is allowed to castle in the position without wPe5. (2019-08-30)
A.Buchanan: Hi Ladislav, I still don't understand you. Heresies must be explained extraordinarily carefully :-)
Following the conventions:
(1) Black retains castling rights because we cannot prove that bK or bR ever moved.
(2) If e.p. is now played, then we still require the same castling convention, as bK or bR might have moved earlier in the game.
(3) So the actual execution of the e.p. does not prove anything new about castling.
(4) Hence it is incorrect to say "e.p. [is] proof that black can [castle]".
Which step do you disagree with?
Yes by the convention, Black could castle in the position without wPe5. What does that prove? (2020-10-03)

My Serbo-Croatian is a bit rusty, so I will leave the translation to you (2020-05-10)
A.Buchanan: I cannot see the logic behind sBc4d3g5. The solution, the h#2 retro try, and the retro logic are all unaffected by their removal. There are numerous h#3 tries anyway.
I have found the results of this tourney on pages 79-81 of the document above. At 70 pages, it is too long for google translate, but apparently one can do character recognition in google drive for free, and then those pages might be translatable. There is also an interesting article by Fabel at the beginning about conventions, which might be worth resuscitating. I will leave these for someone else.
This document has been photocopied multiple times, and some of the diagrams are very difficult to read. It makes me never want to compose with a black piece on a black square ever again! However the retro condition makes it easier to reconstruct the diagrams. (2020-09-30)

A.Buchanan: What is “fabel opus” keyword intended to convey? (2020-11-30)
Henrik Juel: It is an ordered collection of Fabel's chess problems, as I recall (2020-11-30)
A.Buchanan: Oh you mean like a book? :) (2020-11-30)
Mario Richter: Fabel has keeped a detailed track of all his own compositons in a set of black notebooks, the Opus numbers representing the chronological order of the time the respective problem was composed.
see http://www.fabelschach.de/
In the Fabel-Project, there are links into the PDB (still incomplete), the idea of the keyword "Fabel-Opus" is to provide some kind of backlink from the PDB to the Fabel-Project. (2020-11-30)
A.Buchanan: So it will never be considered just as a source? For example as a keyword can’t attach the composition date to it. Seems a questionable data modelling decision, though I can see the enthusiasm (2020-12-01)

Henrik Juel: Completing the key isn't legal, 1.'Rd1'/'-bPc5'/'e8S'+, but omitting the promotion in the mating move is, 1.Sxe7+ Bxe7 2.'f8'#. Excellent joke. (2003-09-19)
James Malcom: A very witty joke Valladao! (2020-09-24)
A.Buchanan: Really like this joke (2020-09-25)
Henrik Juel: To see the illegality of completing 1.fxe8=S+?, note the captures:
Black captured fxDe, so [Pg7,h7] were captured on their files, while the other six missing black men were captured by white pawns
The illegality of completing 1.0-0-0,bxc6ep? is rather obvious (2020-09-26)
James Malcom: And for those you don't find it obvious: If the White king hasn't moved, then where did wRa5, and wBb8 if bPb5 has just done a double-step, come from? Neither can be promoted pieces, as White still has all eight pawns. Trying to finish castling and en passant therefore both produce illegal positions and thus cannot be the solution. (2020-09-26)
Henrik Juel: Continuing beating the dead horse...
How does the white player actually perform an entire move?
1.0-0-0+: Ke1-c1 and Ta1-d1
1.bxc6ep+: Pb5-c6 and remove sPc5
1.fxe8=S+: remove sYe8 and Pf7-e8 and replace wPe8 with wSe8 (three fractional actions)
2.f8=Y#: Pf7-f8 and replace wPf8 with wYf8
So a marginally better stipulation might be: 'White to move mates in less than 2 moves' (2020-09-26)
A.Buchanan: I've tried to set up some intermediate diagrams to allow us to show the animation, but the pieces seem to move even for words which are not moves (and marked italic/red). It's quite baffling. It's almost as if someone with privilege has gone in the background and assigned moves to those dead words. If so, that's extremely unhelpful. Gerd was quite active on this site for a month in German lockdown, for which I'm grateful, but one key task is still waiting: to empower the editors by documenting exactly how the animation decides what to do based on the diagram(s) and stipulation. (2020-09-27)
A.Buchanan: The PDB stipulation field should be non-text form to drive the animation. Where the stipulation is non-standard, there should be a Unicode representation of the original, and translations into German, English and French. But cannot overwrite any original non-standard stipulation, in my opinion, as it is part of the composer's work. (2020-09-27)

James Malcom: This is a most excellent problem! En passant as the key and a double pickaninny in a short s#2 is surely no easy feat, I'd say. Now, question: Why can't dxc5 be Black's last move? The illegal retraction od b6-b7 is already quite obvious. (2020-10-24)

Castling is impossible because, if black can still castle, the diagram position is draw due to the 50-move rule!
White captures: axb, bxc, exf. Black captures: hxg, gxf, exd, dxc. Promotions: a1=T, b1=T, h8=X. The position can only be unblocked by unpromoting White piece on h8. This can only be wRb5. wK must go to c6 to unpin wR. The journey is via g3, h2, e1, b2, & a3.The 50 white moves are: 34 by wK (screens on c8 [with careful step on a2 to let bB pass] then g8), 11 by wB6 (to e3 to exchange place with bB then screen on a7), 3 by wR (promotion on h8), 2 by wBa4.

Schwer zu durchschauende Rückkehrstrategie (MS). Schwierig und schön (FU). Oft gesehene Vorplanstaffelung (FSch). In gewohnter Kozdon-Qualität, großartiges Problem (KHS).

(C. Gamnitzer). - Sofort 1.Tf5+? T:f5! 2.?, daher 1.Tf7! (2.Db4+ Kc6 3.Db5+ T:b5), der sTg5 darf aber vertikal wegziehn wegen 2.Dd5+ L:d5, also bleibt nur das, dem sK ein weiteres Fluchtfeld schaffende, 1.- S:e4! (2.Db4+? Kd5!), aber nun 2.Tf5+! T:f5 3.g5! (4.Dc6+ K:c6); wieder darf der sT die 5. Reihe nicht verlassen, z.B. 3.- T:f7 4.S:e4+! Kc4 5.b3+ L:b3, daher nur, sich einstellend, 3.- T:g5!, und nochmal: 4.h5!; doch nun hat der sT eine neue Möglichkeit: 4.- T:g1! (5.S:e4+? T:e4!), aber das nutzt man mit 5.c:d4+! K:d4 6.D:e4+ Kc5 7.Dc4+ L:c4.

Korrektur in Die Schwalbe 12/2002, Seite 632.

paul: 16.Tc4 T8b3 (2020-11-03)
A.Buchanan: A nice trick for the parser which builds the animation would be to spot when a move is ambiguous. So here 16. ... Tb3 needed to be fixed to be 16. ... Tbb3. In this case, the animation guessed wrong and later reported that 19. ... Da8 was impossible. However in some cases, the error might not be picked up by a later illegal move, yet it could still be important. I will request that Gerd have a look at fixing this ancient issue. (2020-11-04)
A.Buchanan: 22.Tc8 was also imprecise, but did not cause a later illegality so there was no clue. Comparing the diagram at the end of animation to the start diagram would not necessarily be sufficient even for proof games, and completely inadequate for forward stipulations. It’s the parser can best nail these issues on a per-move basis. I’ve emailed Gerd (2020-11-05)
A.Buchanan: Gerd has fixed this: announcement 2020-11-7: The solution engine now no longer plays moves with ambiguous move notation in order to ensure that unambiguous solutions are added.
Thanks so much, Gerd! (2020-11-08)

1) Afspærring af selve Forsvarslinierne (a).
2) Afspærring af Forsvarsli nierne saavelsom af indre førende Bilinier (b).
3) Blokade af sorte Bønder for at hindre Aabning af Forsvarslinierne (c).

Vorweggenommen durch P1022354 , s.a. den Artikel im BCM 1886, S.441ff. Dort heißt es: "In justice to Mr. Rowland it must be noted that he undoubtedly can claim priority of publication over Herr Stahl. The Jamaica Gleaner assumed the contrary—in a recent article—upon the strength of a reprint of Mr. Rowland's version by Professor Brownson, but we have personally seen the Dublin Evening Mail of March 4th, and can vouch for the previous appearance of the position there and then.
It is somewhat curious that two of these, no doubt unconscious, reproductions should have occurred to problems crowned or highly commended in the self-same tourney. The Rowland—Stahl case is not quite so startling as the others, although the resemblance is striking enough and, if known in time, might probably have affected the award. ... the slight deviation on move one in these bi-move problems would rather tend to confirm the notion of deliberate piracy, were they the work of authors unknown to fame. We of course entertain no such suspicion and although the name of K. Stahl is almost unknown to us, yet we plainly see the probability that this composer's work was at Buffalo prior to March 4th, as also the utter unlikelihood he could have seen the Dublin Evening Mail of that date. The foregoing expose will undoubtedly not be without its utility, if composers will read aright the two-fold lesson it conveys. Viz :—First. Do not continue to harp upon old themes in a thin disguise. Let "the Bristol" rest in peace, and disturb no more the bones of "the poor Indian" or such used up subjects as the six move flight square two-mover. Second. Only false prophets tell you the future of the problem art points to positions with few pieces and scant variety. On the contrary, that way lies piracy and consequent mortification of spirit!"

[BCM, 1886, S.70]: "The monthly column is an important feature in a new Illustrated Magazine entitled "The Wanderer," published at Milwaukee, price $1 a year, and devoted to the interests of the travelling public. The Chess contents are so thoroughly good in every way that we recommend our readers to write for a copy ..."

[ACM]: "A marked specialty of his work, which will serve as a faithful index of his style, is his constant predilection to elaborate the powers and functions of the pawn. This peculiarity, conjoined with an active use of the white king, can be traced through many of his finest problems. We will venture to illustrate with a few examples, commencing with the first prize winner of the Wanderer tourney, Milwaukee, 1887."
