shankar ram: Series Draw in 4 moves (Draw by repetition rule not applicable)! (2023-04-08)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Shankar, I could translate the stipulation. But now the penny has dropped that it means reach a drawing position, not a draw. But normally after ser-goal in n moves, it is formally Black to move. E.g. ser-# in n, or ser-= in n. But here, the rule is broken: it's White to move to sneak a 5th move in. After 4. c6 with Black to move as usual, there is 4. ... Qh3+/Qh7+. So I think it should be ser-draw in 5. I will mark it as a study as well as fairies. (2023-04-08)

Henrik Juel: The Draw (by repetition) is part of the stipulation
Without it, there would be cooks, e.g.
1.Sg1-f3 Sb8-a6 2.Sf3-g1 Sa6-b4 3.Sg1-f3 Sb4-d5
4.Sf3-g1 Sd5-e3 5.Bh2-h3 Se3-g4 6.Th1-h2 Sg4xh2

1.Sg1-f3 Sb8-c6 2.Sf3-e5 Sc6xe5 3.Bh2-h3 Se5-g4
4.Th1-h2 Sg4xh2 5.Ba2-a3 Sh2-g4 6.Bh3xg4 Bh7-h6
and identical to the first 6.0 moves of the intended solution
Why could the subsequent triple repetition not be achieved by rook moves?
Probably because the position after 7.Ta2 Tb8 8.Ta1 Ta8 is not considered to be a repeated position, as the castling rights have changed (2018-12-25)
A.Buchanan: Yes that's exactly it Henrik: the surviving rooks are nailed to their start squares (2021-06-05)

b) e.g. 1. e3 a5 2. La6 e6 3. Se2
a) 22 occurrences possible, with 44.5 moves, so no issue with 50-move rule even if it were mandatory.
b) 37 occurrences possible, with 74.0 moves + 0.5 for 3. Se2 in proof game.
The theoretical maximum of 42 is impossible, because it would take 84.5 moves, breaching the mandatory 75-move rule.
Other shortest unique SPGs are possible, but need:
(1) both sides have at least 2 of K,R & R able to move.
(2) both sides must have officer to triangulate.
(3) (for player on the move) triangulating officer must be B or Q.
(4) (for 3+50 case only) e.p. set up.

A.Buchanan: Hi Klaus nice to meet you, thanks for all your work. The point of HC+ is that it combines human & computer logic intelligently. It makes zero sense to solve robotically for 9.0. It is definitely valuable to solve this kind of stipulation (1) as PG in 5.0, and then (2) as PG A-B for 2.0. Apparent duals can then be resolved through reasoning about castling, e.p. and premature draw. (2023-07-29)

A long-standing question (since a problem by Michel Caillaud P1004030, and also one by Guus Rul) asks how the Draw by Triple Repetition (3Rep) convention interacts with the Dead Position rule (DP). This is not an issue over the board, since 3Rep must be claimed. Miguel Ambrona proposed that for retro problems, DP rule has visibility of any looming 3Rep or 50M draw, while for purely forward problems, e.g. help dead position (HDP), it does not. This distinction works extremely well: it enables problems such as Michel's and this new one, while allowing us to eliminate a class of cooks which would be ubiquitous in longer HDP problems. So the HDP design space does not hit an effective ceiling at 4.0 moves. The concept of "retro problem" is already used in Codex Articles 17 & 17A for 50 move rule & DP, so is not new.

Henrik Juel: Black pawns captured all missing white men by a7xb6xc5xd4xe3 and h2xg1=L; White captured [Lc8, Lf8] with officers and a2xb3, e2xd3, f2xe3xd4 (after Black played e3-e2), and h2xg3.
If last move was Ka2-a1, the play presumably is 1.Kc2 Ka2 2.Kc3 Ka1 3.Kc2;
if last move was Kb1-a1, the play presumably is 1.Kb3 Kb1 2.Kc3 Ka1 3.Kb3.
But where are the three-fold repetitions justifying remis? Last white move could be e3xd4. (2012-02-18)
Mario Richter: Genesis of the position:
bBa3 is bPh7 which promoted on g1 by Ph2xg1=B.
White pawn captures: Ph2xg3, Pf2xe3xd4, Pe2xd3, Pa2xb3
Black pawn captures: Pa7xb6xc5xd4xe3, Ph2xg1
Therefore Henrik's suggestion wPe3xd4 is illegal, since then the bB has no chance to reach g1. (2012-02-22)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Mario; this probably gives rise to three-fold repetition. (2012-02-22)
A.Buchanan: (1) R: 1. Ka2-a1 Kc2-c3 2. Ka1-a2 then e.g. c3-c4
Forwards: 1. ... Kc2 2. Ka2 Kc3 3. Ka1 Kc2=
(2) R: 1. Kb1-a1 Kb3-c3 2. Ka1-b1 then e.g. c3-c4
Forwards: 1. ... Kb3 2. Kb1 Kc3/Ka4 3. Ka1 Kb3= so dualized!
Is this right?
Trying h=3.0 for fun:
(1) R: 1. Kc2-c3 Ka2-a1 then e.g. 2. c3-c4
Forwards: 1. Ka2 Kc2 2. Ka1 Kc3 3. Ka2 Kc2=
(2) R: 1. Kb3-c3 Kb1-a1 then e.g. 2. c3-c4
Forwards: 1. Kb1 Kb3 2. Ka1 Kc3/Ka4 3. Kb1 Kb3= so again would be dualized! (2021-12-05)
