If White checks with his Knights on any of the four squares, Black recaptures with check. The key-move induces Black to defeat the threat by closing each of his checking lines in turn, when White's second moves can open lines for the Queen mates. The quiet threat which is forced only by Q-R2 and P-R6, takes some finding.

A.Buchanan: PDB gives us very little flexibility for describing the quality of problems. I suppose we should record duals in the "Cook" field for now. Everyone would agree that the trial is a defect. But duals are not cooks, and even if we accept that "Cooked" is PDB-speak for "Unsound" for now, it would go against the view of many problemists to mark this celebrated problem as unsound.
