'The Problemist Supplement': "The WCCT tourney of the time required #2s demonstrating changed self-blocks. The judge was Jeremy Morse and F [i.e. dieses Problem] was a clear winner. Set 1…Qxc4 2.Sf3; 1…Sxc4 2.Sc6; 1…Qxe4 2.c3; 1…fxe4 2.Rxd7 but nothing is set for 1…Kxe4. The strong give-and-take key forms a powerful battery. 1.Sxd7! (>2.Sb6) Qxc4 2.Qe5; 1…Sxc4 2.Rxd3; 1…Qxe4 2.Qc5; 1…fxe4 2.Se5 (switchback). This last mate also follows 1…Kxc4. There is no extraneous play and the wRd8 provides full value in both phases – a beautiful work. In his award Jeremy mentions that those few predecessors of which he was aware all suffered from certain shortcomings."

aus "Sam Loyd and his Chess Problems":
"CHARLES XII. AT BENDER."
The most famous of the Fiske-Loyd stories, and probably the best problem tale ever written, is the sketch: Charles XII. at Bender.
It has appeared in print, since the original publication in the Chess Monthly, in March, 1859, in every conceivable form and language.
In the volume of Fiske's Tales are mentioned the translations into Swedish verse, by J. G. Schultz 1868, into Danish 1876, into Italian by M. Monzecchi 1901, and into Icelandic 1901, and certainly other renderings abound. J. A. Miles put the story into English verse in his Chess Gems, 1860. "Much of the interest attaching to the piece," wrote Mr. Fiske in 1901, "is owing to the problems, which form as it were the gist of the narrative. They were suggested by the writer of the sketch to Mr. Samuel Loyd, the most ingenious and brilliant of all problem composers, who was then in his eighteenth year. The three problems were soon forthcoming, composed in a single afternoon."
The story introduces an imaginary incident during the siege of Charles the Twelfth of Sweden by the Turks at Bender in 1713. Charles beguiled this period by means of drills and chess, and used frequently to play with his minister, Christian Albert Grothusen, some of the contests being mentioned by Voltaire. One day while so engaged, the game had advanced to the stage represented in P1030415, and Charles (White) had just announced mate in three. Scarcely had he uttered the words, when a Turkish bullet, shattering the window, dashed the White Knight off the board in fragments. Grothusen started violently, but Charles, with the utmost coolness, begged him to put back the other Knight and work out the mate, observing that it was pretty enough. But another glance at the board made Charles smile: "We do not need the Knight. I can give it to you, and still mate in four!" (P1037289). Who would believe it, he had barely spoken when a second bullet flew across the room, and the Pawn at h2 shared the fate of the Knight. Grothusen turned pale. "You have our good friends the Turks with you," said the King, unconcerned, "it can scarcely be expected that I should contend against such odds; but let me see if I cannot dispense with that unlucky Pawn. I have it!" he shouted, with a tremendous laugh, "I feel great pleasure in informing you that there is undoubtedly a mate in five" (P1159789). Nor would Charles permit Grothusen to leave till he had solved the problem.
It is perhaps not very remarkable that the minister, fearful of a repetition of such chess battles, left the encampment the next day and joined the Swedes, who took sides with the enemy.
In the original three-mover, F. Amelung has pointed out, in the Baltische Schachblätter, 1900 [Heft 7, S. 274], that if the first bullet had destroyed the Rook instead of the Knight, Charles would have had an equal opportunity of showing his analytical powers by announcing a mate in six (P1159308)!

Henrik Juel: Mario, many of the years in your english text are rendered in a funny way, with i or I instead of 1 and o instead of 0, e.g. 'into Italian by M. Monzecchi igoi', where igoi probably means 1901 (2022-05-23)

Nachdruck in 'The Problemist Supplement' innerhalb eines Artikels von Robert A. Lincoln zum Thema "Black Pawn Promotion in the Miniature", zur Aufgabe heißt es dort: "Not only does No. 9 have an obvious start, but only two mates arise. Nevertheless, this example demonstrates a unique property. 1.Rh2 (-) takes up station to vanquish successively 1. ... e1Q 2. Rc2 or 1. ... e1S 2. Qb2. These responses flip-flop when alternate capture divergences arise: 1. ... exd1Q 2. Qb2 and 1. ... exd1S 2. Rc2. This is a very unusual treatment of reciprocal correction."

Olaf Jenkner: Dr. Andreas Reinhard merkt bei P1298048 an, daß die Lösung falsch angegeben ist.
Sie ist hier und in YACPDB #188554 ebenso falsch:

156. Df1+ Ke4? 157.d3+ Kd5 158.Dxf5+ Kc6 159.De6+ Kb7 160.Db6+ Ka8/Kc8 161.Da6#/Dc7+
158. ... Se5 159.Dxe5+ Kc6 160.Dc7 Kb5/Kd5 161.Db6#/Dd6#

Richtig ist:

156.Df1+ Kg4! 157.De2+ Tf3 158.De6+ Tf5 159.Kd1 a3 160.Kc1 Kf3

Die Lösungsangabe wurde korrigiert. (2022-07-16)

Dr. Andreas Reinhard: I think after 182. Df1+ Ke4?? 183. d3 is #5 (2022-07-15)
Olaf Jenkner: Die Lösung war falsch angegeben, im Morsebuch steht sie korrekt.

182. Df1+ Ke4? 183.d3+ Kd5 184.Dxf5+ Kc6 185.De6+ Kb7 186.Db6+ Ka8/Kc8 187.Da6#/Dc7+
184. ... Se5 185.Dxe5+ Kc6 186.Dc7 Kb5/Kd5 187.Db6#/Dd6#

Richtig ist:

182.Df1+ Kg4! 183.De2+ Tf3 184.De6+ Tf5 185.Kd1 a3 186.Kc1 Kf3 ...

Der Dual ist zwar ärgerlich, er ändert aber nichts an der Korrektheit, denn die Variante 195.Df1+ Kg4 ist dualfrei. (2022-07-16)
