Wieviel Bauern muß man entfernen, damit die Stellung legal ist?

Zero - the position is legal.
A.Buchanan: Isn't this a legal position? In each of the 4 pairs of adjacent files, one cross-capture suffices. So a total of 8 captures is necessary, with up to 14 available. (2022-03-17)
Henrik Juel: Yes, any master of the 20 bishops problem can see that the position is legal
The diagram must be wrong (2022-03-17)
A.Buchanan: Maybe it's a correct composition, with a humorous solution: "zero"? All that's wrong is that it shouldn't be tagged with keyword "illegal position". I will fix that (2022-03-17)

A.Buchanan: So this was Niemann's own correction, I guess. When was FEENSCHACH renamed feenschach? (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: "Jungle & Garden" is a new perspective in the fairy chess terminology classification campaign. It comes from a frustration I've had in writing glossary entries (not just in chess, but in my professional life) as to what I am trying to achieve with a definition. Is it ever "good enough", or can it be? It basically says that any term is either a *description* of an aspect of the chaotic real world ("Jungle") or it's a *definition* in our provisional model of that world ("Garden"). Words like "love", "game", "fairy", "tempo", "joke" are all Jungle words. The meaning is derived from consensus: like a ship's anchor cable is made up of many fibres, in Wittgenstein's famous image. On the other hand, we are trying to build (in our software & databases) formal models which can classify, solve and compose chess problems (Gardens). The terminology in any one can and must be exact, as it emerges bottom-up from formal mathematics, logical and informational structures. However these terms are only provisional, and different Gardens may have different interpretations. It is acknowledged that they are not the same as similar terms in the Jungle. They are our best shot so far. It is valid to list (in a civil way) perceived shortcomings between the Garden and the Jungle, which can be put in a backlog to be handled later. "Legality" is an excellent example of a Garden concept, which is why I am exploring it currently. Comments welcome. (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: A database crosses the divide: it must store accurate "photographs of the jungle". Any transformation of these compositions (e.g. rationalization of the stipulation) cannot over-write primary jungle data. I thought this composition did that, but I think it's Niemann's own correction published later. (2021-05-25)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the explanation, Andrew (2021-05-25)

Cook: e.p. not justified as R: 0.e3xd4 possible
VL: Unjustified ep-capture because of –e3xd4. For correction it suffices e.g. to add bSe3.
This is possibly a unique 2-move helpmate with ep-key and 2 solutions of the type 1.2.1.1 (at least so currently in the PDB).
Publi?ation details. H551 in the Helpmate section of the July issue, with no preview. Here is the text of the solution published in the Nov.-77 issue: “…White may have just played P(e3)xd4. Very few solvers have spotted this. Full marks for claim of no solution with correct reasoning but, in fairness, one mark for composer's intention. White cannot have just played K(a5)a6 in reply to Pxb6+ as too many captures by Black are required.” (2023-12-01)
A.Buchanan: Yes Valery you are right this must be cooked. However, I'm not a fan of +bSe3 because it spoils one of the model mates. Separately, I mildly prefer bPf7 to bPe6. (2023-12-03)
VL: I do prefer bPf7, as well. I don't see any way to save at least one of the properties Kindergarten Problem and Model mate (2) after fixing (what for these keywords have been added just now?). Besides, Andrew, please, refine the specification ((full) number and publication month 07-08). (2023-12-03)
A.Buchanan: Ok have added the publication details. The keywords are useful to indicate the aim, even though the problem is cooked. I guess there is a way to keep the model mates but it’s very clunky and probably +bSe3 is better (2023-12-03)

There is some choice in the retro path, but in the shortest resolution, the sK round trip is uniquely defined: e8-c8(castling)-b8-c8(switchback)-d7-d8-e8. Note that wTa, still stuck in its cage, was captured on c2.
Mu-Tsun Tsai: Can't believe that this one didn't get the 1st prize. The design is really brilliant! (2011-04-17)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your nice words, Mu-Tsun. In 1997 there were few retro problems in Thema Danicum, and they were judged together with fairy problems, so the competition was stiff. (2011-04-17)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for posting the solution, Andrew
Two minor points:
The uncheck plusses should be R: 1. ... g7xSf6 2. Sg4-f6+ Kd8-e8 3. Se5-g4 Kd7-d8 4. Sc6-e5+ Kc8-d7 5. Sd8-c6 Kb8-c8 6. d7-d8=S Kc8-b8 7. c6xTd7+
sK could wander around on the queen side while wS pendulates on, say, g4 and h2; but in the shortest resolution the sK round trip is unique (2021-01-17)

Erster Züge der schwarzen Bauern: a7xSb6, c7-c6, d7xSe6, f7-f6, h7xTg6
Henrik Juel: The first moves by black pawns who moved were: a7xSb7,
c7-c6, d7xSe6, f7-f6, h7xTg6. Retroplay e.g. -1.Ka4! b6xLc5 -2.La3 c5xTd4 -3.Lc1 c6 -4.b2xDTSc3; bring wK to g1 and wT to f1, and unpromote the uncaptured black officer on e1, e.g. -11.Kh1 Y=e2 -12.Kg1 e3 -13.0-0 f4xDe3 -14.De2 f5
-15.Dd1 g6xLf5 -16.Ld3 h7xTg6 -17.Lf1 c7 -18.e2xLf3 etc. (2006-07-13)
Henrik Juel: A few additional remarks may be necessary
White captured [Lf8] on f8, a2xb3x...xf7, b2xc3, and e2xf3, so all missing black men except for [Lf8] were captured by white pawns
Black captured a7xb6xc5, cxd, d7xe6, and made three more captures
d7xe6 happened after e6xf7, before [Lc8] could exit, implying:
1. [Pa2] captured DTTSS
2. [Lc8] was captured on f3
3. [Ph7] captured hxgxfxe, promoted on e1, and the promotee Y was captured on c3
Early in the retroplay Black must uncapture [Lc1] quickly, so White can retract b2xYc3 before Black runs out of pawn retractions
Later, White must retract [Dd1,Ke1,Lf1,Th1] quickly, so he can retract e2xLf3 before Black runs out of pawn retractions (2017-09-11)
Henrik Juel: This problem was awarded a Commendation (Lob) by judge Klaus Wenda in the informal fairy tourney (including retros) for 2005 (2021-06-18)
A.Buchanan: A terrific problem, and quite recent! (2021-06-19)

A.Buchanan: While it's true that there is no legal last move for Black, does this make the problem a "Retro"? The reasoning is hyper-trivial. Was this intended as a joke? Or is there some context for the composition? If only I knew a Danish person who might have some knowledge of the culture at the time... :) (2021-10-07)
Henrik Juel: Ha-ha, here goes
Knud Hannemann was the best danish composer in his prime, but this is surely a joke
Possibly the try 1.g8=D#?? was intended
Skakbladet 1972 is not available for me, but it might throw some light on the problem (2021-10-07)

James Malcom: Is the given retraction unique? (2020-11-08)
Henrik Juel: Unique up to 11.c2-c3, I think (2020-11-08)
Henrik Juel: One of my favorite retros with just kings and pawns
even though the retroplay is not completely unique (so my previous comment is imprecise)
R: 2... h3-h2 3.Lf6-h4 h4-h3 or 3... f5-f4 also work
but not R: 1.e3-e4? or 1.c5-c6?, and White runs out of pawn retractions
nor 2. e3-e4? or 2. c5-c6? f5-f4 3. Le5-g3, and same difficulty (2020-11-09)
Henrik Juel: In the forward play we have several temporal implications, e.g.,
e2-e3 before b7xLa6 before g2xLf3 before g3-g2 before h2xg3
d6xc7 before e7xd6 before b2xLa3 before f4xLg3
Thierry was inspired by P0008574 (2020-11-09)
James Malcom: I see the similarities as well. If Thierry's last 21 moves, stopping at 11. c2-c3 of course, are indeed unique, it seems to be the record for a kindergarten position? (2020-11-09)
A.Buchanan: I think the last 2 single moves are determined. Prior to that it could be f5-f4 or h3-h2, no? (2020-11-10)
Henrik Juel: You are right, Andrew
So, no record, James (2020-11-10)
James Malcom: Ah well then-the linked problem with 16 moves by Gerd oughtta be it then, from what I've searched so far. (2020-11-10)
A.Buchanan: Isn’t the retro record one of the Breyer versions by Thierry Le Gleuher? (2020-11-10)
James Malcom: As far as I know, the TOTAL retro record is, all from P1339006, by Theierry indeed: Type A, 100 moves, Type B, 101 with bP6-h6 & White to move, and, finally Type C, 102 with bP6-h6 and wSc7-a8. (2020-11-10)
James Malcom: For Type B, I meant "bPh5-h6." (2020-11-10)

A few years ago this position went the round as the 'Jap Trick' the idea of it. was not. new, but the presentment was clever and effective. im 'Recreationist' Erwähnung alternativer Lösungen von C. Durward and H.J.C. Andrews mit 1. f8=S sowie Hinweis, daß mit 1. f8=D ein Matt in 9 Zügen erreicht werden kann (ohne Angabe der konkreten Zugfolgen).
Originalforderung: White gives mate with Pawn now on K B 5, in ten moves.

12/1873 S.157 Mr. Dunne's Pawn-mate, page 137, was inserted for a particular reason we may explain in giving its solution. It is meant that White should queen a pawn.
We feel a word of apology is due to our readers for the publication of this Pawn-mate, for two reasons: firstly, we knew the problem to be defective; and secondly, we knew it had been published in the 'Liverpool Albion´s' chess column. We had occasion to request the favour of a notice of our Magazine in the chess column of the above-named paper. The editor assured us such notice could only be inserted as an advertisement. To this of course we could offer no objection, but the editor of the Chess Column oblingly added that the Chess matter of the 'R.' was of too poor a standard to be recommended to his readers. We determined to test the high standard of the chess supplied to the readers of the 'L.A.', and feeling instinctively that the position in question had a suspicious look about it, tried it, and found it wanting. This, therefore, we considered a point in our favour, for the position had passed publication by the Chess editor of the 'L.A.' without any remark as to its unsoundness. Then, further to test the ability of our readers, we determined to publish it as we did without comment, and to keep the 'rotten egg' [P1305834] suitable companionship. It is but fair to add that even Mr. Dunne himself did not know his problem was unsound till some time after its publicatuion in the 'R.'. Before long at least twenty of our solvers discovered the flaw, which had passed unnoticed by the editor and subscribers of the high standard Chess in the 'L.A.', and we rest quite satisfied. ..."
SP: Not 1. f8=D as this would mate with the wrong man. What was intended,
presumably, was to give the bK some leeway and then promote. Singularly weak
as polemics: if the worst sin that can be adduced against an 1870s editor is
letting a cook in a 10-move problem get through, he would be doing very well!
J. White was much wiser in his later editorial work. (2022-06-17)

"The First Christmas Problem"

By C.P. Carpenter

The majority of chess players, familiar as they are with that form of chess joke called "Christmas Problems," may not know until they have read the following beautiful legend just how and when the custom originated nor, for that matter, may they be certain of it then, so cursed is this romantic age with belief.
In the Palace of the World, under the pagan line for December 25, was held the great feast of Brumalia. Upon an occasion of this festival, in the reign of the great King Eshamat, that monarch, his guests and vezers were assembled in the readiness for the festival and whilling away the interval at chess when a regged fakir approached the palace gates and craved admission from Elkanoj Bey, the sentry. That official surveyed him grimly.
"Have you got a card?" he asked with elaborate politness.
"I am a poor man, your excellency," replied the fak. "and the only card I ever had was the two-spot out of my pinochle deck,, but I am fearfully keen for my lunch and no harm, but only good. shall come to you see if you allow me to enter. I swear it as Allah sees it."
"Better beat it while Allah still see you." replied the sentry wearily. "He won't be able to see you if you stick around here long."
"I have traveled far, Effendi," replied the fakir, "and am weary. If the king phrase. I may be able to show him a wonderful play at chess. If he cannot solve it perhaps he may reward his slave with a seat at the banquet."
"In that case." said the sentry,"enter, and be your own usher. If you can get away with it, peace o you: and if noy peace to you."
Now the king fancied himself as a solver. and the fakir was well recieved when he had made known his mission.
"Know. Oh. King," said the fakir. as he set up the pieces, "that this position occured in a game between the great King Mahmud and my friend. Ali Bi, who had the white pieces, and it ran into this puzzling position with white to play, andd though it appears impossbile, netherless my friend Ali Bi did may and win this with one move. Now if his gracious majesty csn tell me how. I forfeit my lucnh: if not, I kick in at the festal board. Is it a bet?"
"You are somewhat shy on collateral,"" replied the kin: "netherless we will at least call it a bargain."

White to play and win

Long time did King Eshamat pore over the position without avail, while his company shifted about uneasily and the head cook cursed softly, but fluently in his mother tongue. Finally the king arose with a grunt of disgust.
"I pass," he said. 'What's the answer?"
'It was not in the bargain, your majesty," replied the fakir, "thay I should tell. only that your majesty should fail to find."
"Netherless?" said the king, "since we cannot solve, the problem it is our privlege to look in the appendix for answer. Selim, bring an ax."
"Pardon your majesty," cried the faki. "I will explain the mystery."
"I should be charmed," said the king drily. "What was the movr?"
"My friend Ali BI," replied the fakir, "pushed the pawm."
"But what did he call for?"
"He called for a drink but it didn't come," said the fakir, with a smile which didn't fit his face. "I hope it doesn't happen again."
"Quick fool." cried the kinh. "What piece did you call fo>"
"A queen, your majesty"
"But that woulld give stalemate."
"Even so, your majesty, "but it is also won. My frien, Ali Bi, is a weaker player and King Mahmad graciously offered odds of a draw."
King Eshamat sank into a chair and gezed at the faker. He shook himself, unable to rouse. He shook himslef again, but failed to fill. The fakir moistened his lips and glanced at the feast.
'You bargain, your majesty," he suggested timidly.
"True." said he king. "Salim, find this fakir a place at the feast."
"Very good, yout majesty," said the servant, "but the places are full. Where would it please your majesty I should put him/"
'Ah," said the king grimly, "just crack his skull and put him with the rest of the nuts."
James Malcom: In my view, since this has a story about a majesty, and give the board state, that 1. g8=K! would be a far better solution as I thought before I stumbled upon the source today. Sygyzy declares this a draw, even if -bPh2. =Q/R is stale, and =B/S+ is too weak and Black can fortress. =P does nothing of course, so king promotion is just right here it was for Goldilocks. (2020-10-17)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for typing this in, James, although I don’t really understand the joke. And if 1. g8=K how does Wh dislodge bK from g6/h6? (2020-10-18)
Henrik Juel: The joke seems to be that Black has agreed to accept stalemate as a win for White
If we disregard this, I agree that White cannot win with an extra king; it is easy to dislodge black king from g6/h6, but later White cannot dislodge him from g8/h8 (2020-10-18)
A.Buchanan: If the convention is dynasty, then promotion to a king turns both wKs into erlkings until one is captured. I think these can mate bK, no? (2020-10-19)

James Malcom: This composition is one of my personal favorites amongst mine. It was inspired be Krabbe's Journal #89, which touches on the so called theme of "remote knight promotion." The point of this is to show the aximum diaganol distance with kings and pawns only.

A Meredith rendering is still pending for any geniuses out there. (2020-10-24)

An elongated version of P1372653 by four moves; the original origins are unknown

Move length record for a kindergarten problem
A.Buchanan: Any kind of assessment of soundness of this one? (2020-11-19)
James Malcom: Andrew, there is no doubt about the soundness. Sure, the ending may have a few duals, but those are generally acceptable in Blathy's correct work. Here is the proof.

All White pawns are immobile. The kingside mustn't move, or else Black breaks through and wins. Nor can a7, b2, or b6 without losing the winning chance.

The Black king is stuck, of course. The Black kindgside pawns are forever held up by White's, and the queenside ones can't move, or else Black would soon be in zugzwang and lose.

Lastly, the White king can't go after the Black pawn to shorten the game, or the Black queenside pawns must be tended to. If the White king reaches either e5 or f4, then Black plays b4!, threatening to queen soon. So the White king must hurry back, Black gets the White queen stuck as well, and it is a draw.

With a restricted White king to the given triangulation corridor, the Black king stuck, all pawns pawns frozen on their journeyes, the soundness is guranteed. (2020-11-19)
James Malcom: Furthermore, on move 99 with Black to move, chess.com analysis agrees with checkmate in move 112, albeit with a few move order corrections that I've just made. So it is still correct, with a Blathy style taste in duals. (2020-11-19)

Duplicate Diagram: P1017583

Henrik Juel: Solution
All 8+8 pawns are on the board, and it is easy to count the east-bound pawn captures needed to give the diagram configuration
The a-file is pawnless, axb happened twice, bxc happened 2+2-1 = 3 times, cxd happened 3+2-0 = 5 times, and dxe happened 5+2-3 = 4 times, for a total of 14 needed captures; this number equals the number of missing officers, 7+7, so all captures were pawn captures, namely the ones just enumerated
This means that the pawns on the f,g,h-files never captured, so Pf5,g2,h3 are white and Pf7,g7,h5 are black
A sKf3 would stand in impossible check from wPg2, so Kf3 is white, and Ka3 and Pb2 are black
A sPe4 would give impossible check to wKf3, so Pe4 is white
[Lf1,Lf8] were not captured at home, so Pe2 is black and Pe7 is white
Now we have two white pawns on the e-file, so the white capture dxe happened at least once; this leaves at most six captures for the remaining three white pawns, and to reach the diagram configuration we need all these six captures, namely axbxcd, bxcxd, and cxd
This means that Pd3,d5,d7 are white and Pe3,e5,e6 are black, concluding the coloring
It is easy to verify that this coloring is a legal position; the only pitfalls in constructing a proof game are on the e-file, where Pe4 must be [wPe2] and Pe5 or Pe6 must be [sPe7] to ensure that the black e-pawn stands above the white one (2020-12-31)
Henrik Juel: The colored position is
White Kf3, Pd3,d5,d7,e4,e7,f5,g2,h3
Black Ka3, Pb2,e2,e3,e5,e6,f7,g7,h5 (2020-12-31)

In how many ways can you add a White Queen and a Black Queen to this diagram to obtain a legal position?

2021 solutions
A.Buchanan: beautiful! (2021-01-01)
Henrik Juel: Yes, beautiful simplicity; finally one I can handle...
There are 64-9-9 = 46 empty squares, so the queens can be added in 46x45 = 2070 ways
The only illegality is that both kings are in check, which happens in 7x7 = 49 ways
Answer: 2070-49 = 2021 (2021-01-01)
A.Buchanan: Oh the other two today aren't hard, Henrik. But this one is a real gift from the Gods (2021-01-01)
