Henrik Juel: C+ by Natch 3.1 (16 min.)
The colored position has black Ta1,h1 and Pb5,g6, and white Ta7,h8, otherwise 'natural' (2018-12-07)
François Labelle: Henrik, did you really test all 2^30 possible colorings with Natch, or did you use human deductions to reduce the possibilities (making this HC+), or did you only test the intended coloring (making this a partial C+)? (2018-12-09)
Mario Richter: I do not think that it is necessary to check all 2^30 colorings, since the color of the pawns on files c,d,e and f is completely determined. This and more restrictions on the set of potentially possible colorings may be derived from insights presented in an article "Aggregierte Schlagbilanz" by Frolkin & Kornilov, feenschach 130, p.411ff. Since the mechanisms presented there can at least partially be implemented in a little computer program, even a "full C+" label for this problem is not out of reach ... (2018-12-10)
Henrik Juel: I only tested the intended coloring, Francois,
so the C+ label is not justifiable
In the other coloring proof games I write something like
The colored position was C+ by Natch

Mario is right, of course, in that not all colorings need testing; but still the number is very large
This genre is somewhat messy; at first I thought that the solver could determine the coloring, but this is clearly not the case; also, the intention is not
'color the men such that a correct proof game in 19 results' (2018-12-11)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: so what exactly should the stipulation be for clarity? (2018-12-12)

bPa & bPh promoted with wPaxb7 & bPhxg6 to clear the way. There is an inner cage containing all the White officers, and White has only 6 current retractions. So Black must unpromote something. Both White captures were on light squares, so Lf4 is original.
1) Lf3 to h1. For speed, White must uncapture Ceriani-Frolkin D on g6, which arrives on a1 in 2 unmoves. When White uncaptures L on b7, it's Phoenix of the original.
2) Tf8 to a1. (It's too slow to unpromote on h1). When White must uncapture on b7, g2 is already blocked, so White must uncapture S, and unpromote that or one of the other Black S. However, the inner cage has been breached, so the clock has stopped now. Eventually, White will uncapture Phoenix T on g6.
The tempo is exact in both cases, so White, not Black must have the move.

paul: 16.Tc4 T8b3 (2020-11-03)
A.Buchanan: A nice trick for the parser which builds the animation would be to spot when a move is ambiguous. So here 16. ... Tb3 needed to be fixed to be 16. ... Tbb3. In this case, the animation guessed wrong and later reported that 19. ... Da8 was impossible. However in some cases, the error might not be picked up by a later illegal move, yet it could still be important. I will request that Gerd have a look at fixing this ancient issue. (2020-11-04)
A.Buchanan: 22.Tc8 was also imprecise, but did not cause a later illegality so there was no clue. Comparing the diagram at the end of animation to the start diagram would not necessarily be sufficient even for proof games, and completely inadequate for forward stipulations. It’s the parser can best nail these issues on a per-move basis. I’ve emailed Gerd (2020-11-05)
A.Buchanan: Gerd has fixed this: announcement 2020-11-7: The solution engine now no longer plays moves with ambiguous move notation in order to ensure that unambiguous solutions are added.

Originalforderung: White mates in two - with the Knight at KKt6.
Motto: "A La Napier"
A.Buchanan: It's easy to make a miniature ideal mate version of this cheeky problem, e.g. 8/6pk/3N1PN1/6P1/7K/8/8/8 but the charm of Marshall's original is the apparently pointless wSb1 (2020-10-21)

Henrik Juel: Keyword Sea Snake is defined here as a long rapid (?) chess problem
I prefer the (original?) narrower definition:
White repeats a tempo-losing maneuver until Black has exhausted his pawn moves
C+ by Popeye 4.61 (2016-02-14)
Rosalie Fay: How did Walther Jørgensen define it in Søslanger? Fact is, he didn't confine his term to problems showing White tempo-losing manoeuvres. Some of his selfmates in Søslanger show White tempo-winning manoeuvres, e.g. P1089935 and P1299458. Jørgensen's P1238656 and P1193879 (composed after the book was published) are similar.

If a term specifically for problems with multiple tempo-losing manoeuvres is desired, perhaps "black sea-snake" for those, and "white sea-snake" for those with multiple tempo-winning manoeuvres?

Should mere length at least 50 qualify and length less than 50 disqualify? Morse (CP:T&R, s.17.1) writes of Jørgensen "aptly comparing the repeated sequences of moves so often found in long problems to the sea-serpent's coils". We can't ask Jørgensen (1916-89) and can but wonder what he would have made of the long studies derived from endgame tablebases. However, I think that repetition of a move-sequence for White's benefit is the cogent idea, not mere length. (2021-06-23)

"First time realisation of a very organic complex - double task with white AUW in second moves and phoenix in all thematic variations, plus thematic Q-sacrifice key." (Author)
Judge Miodrag Mladenovic, award 03/2023

Henrik Juel: Another first:
Never before was a problem commented in the PDB before it was published... (2020-05-08)

An idea to make it all unique is the problem though. (2020-05-08)
A.Buchanan: Haha Henrik thank you. Well I'm in lockdown in Singapore, and it was 9-May already when I posted in Matplus. (2020-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Can claim that this is not Schnoebelen because the pawn wasn't promoted! Just remained as a pawn! But I'm sure the Schnoebelen theme was interpreted in a looser sense in 1860s. Although exponents in that era would have been baffled as to *why* the theme was termed "Schnoebelen", as Philippe was not yet born. (2020-05-09)
Henrik Juel: I am sorry to learn about the Singapore lockdown, but here the merriment has no bounds (apart from the notational dilemma: exf8 is not a promotion and still the PDB animation requires exf8=B) (2020-05-09)
Olaf Jenkner: If you consider each pawn move onto the 8th rank as a promotion then we have the Schnoebelen. (2020-05-09)

James Malcom: The theme is that 5 bishops are fianchettoed-one more than normally allowed! (2020-10-13)
Rainer Staudte: Rules allow a 20-bishops-fianchetto. (2020-10-13)
Henrik Juel: Very nice, James
For this short PG any tester will suffice, but if you push this idea further, Natch is much faster than Jacobi (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: Can’t a fianchettoed bishop go round to the bank rank and do it again? So even 20 is not a barrier (2020-10-13)
A.Buchanan: Dates in PDB are yyyy-mm-dd or dd/mm/yyyy. Hence I will change publication date from Dec to Oct (2020-10-13)
James Malcom: Right-the date slipped me again!

Andrew, while a bishop can easily be fianchettoed twice+, about the number of bishops doing it, not how many times it is done. I'm sure that an expert could do 6 fianchettoing bishops. (2020-10-13)

Henrik Juel: The requirement for this tourney was something like: H#2 with retro content, so successful entries are retro problems, almost by definition
The judges must have considered that the counting here suffices as retro content
One of the other awarded problems has even less retro content: Last move could not be a pawn capture, because the other side has 16 men (2021-01-02)
Mario Richter: I think Andrew's analysis is not correct, especially his claim "There is no reason that any of these [i.e. the black promoted pieces] need still be on the board"
In fact, Black has promoted FOUR (not 3) of his pawns, twice on c1, twice on d1. The lower right corner can only be opended by retracting d2xe3, before that is possible, all four black promotions must be retracted - the only pieces available for that are Da7, Tb7, Lb8 and Sg8.
In the forward play, exactly these four black officers are captured - does that make them some kind of "Forward-Ceriani-Frolkins"?! (2021-01-02)
A.Buchanan: @Henrik,Mario: I've hidden my prior posts, although I feel I'm clearer now in my mind about what makes a retro-problem. However in the analysis here, I missed the key retraction point: thanks for picking it up. So retracting, Bl unpromotes Phoenix AUW, and uncaptures include wT' & wL' (where ' and " can denote queenside/kingside - I've been looking for a handy notation for this for a long time). With these pieces at home, Wh can unlock the cage as Mario says with dxe3. So the board contains 4 promoted units, which in current PDB terminology, we could only call "obtrusive". We must fix this naming hole. In their encyclopedia, V&V identify 4 kinds of promoted force [with some clarifications by me, including adding a 5th category]. [Each promoted unit should fit into exactly *one* of the categories, although it may not be possible to determine which exact unit is which.]
(1) In the initial problem position there is a piece that can [obviously] only have come through promotion, so-called obtrusive force, e.g. a white dark-squared Bishop, with Pawns b2 and d2 still on their original squares;
(2) [In the initial problem position] promoted force that adds the number of pieces from the game-array, for instance three Rooks or two light-squared Bishops of same color (non-standard material);
([3]) [In the initial problem position] pieces the origin of which has been promotion, which can be deduced only by retrograde analysis, i.e. there is nothing in the position that suggests it is promoted force. [This category needs a proper name, otherwise it will be forever conflated with obtrusive promotions. These are phoenix/prenix, but in many cases we won't be able to distinguish which, and wouldn't care anyway. Are the terms phoenix/prenix are only used for units still on the board?]
[(4) promoted units which have been captured before the initial problem position (Ceriani-Frolkin)]
([5]) pieces that promote during the course of solution.
The pieces of group (3),(4)[&(5)] are allowed, the pieces of group (1) are tolerated, although avoided, whereas the compositions of group (2) are rejected unless there is, say, a theme tournament for compositions with non-standard material.
For retro-problems somewhat different conventions apply, although these still meet the standards set for orthodox problems.[I don't understand this last sentence at all. Mario can you explain please.] (2021-01-03)

Objective: fastest Staugaard (Pam-Krabbé) + another castling (happens to be kside)
A.Buchanan: Now we know more about Conrad Staugaard and his life, I enthusiastically agree with Henrik's earlier suggestion that we change this theme to be "Staugaard", which would also align with WinChloe. I can make necessary changes in PDB as a batch, and retain also "Pam-Krabbe" as a deprecated keyword, pointing to Staugaard. Pam & Krabbé are famous already, and only popularized Staugaard's funny idea. Any objections? (2021-05-08)
A.Buchanan: OK thank you: I've made the move. Please check the definitions, and let me know anything that needs changing (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Very good, Andrew; the Staugaard fan club (both of us) thanks you
You might want to add that after a white Staugaard castling, wK is on e3 and promoted wR is on e2
I wonder whether the solution notation should be changed to 0-0-0-0-0 with 5 zeroes, so that the number of zeroes is one less than the length of the rook displacement for all three castlings (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Forget my very last remark, please
Short and long castling has rook displacement = number of zeroes,
so Staugaard should remain with 6 zeroes, of course (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Ok listed the target squares as requested. (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Curious that this economy record must begin with a tempo move (2021-05-20)
A.Buchanan: Staugaard seems a much better basis than Chess960 for further generalization of castling. Basically move an unchecked royal king 2 unattacked square towards the rook, and the rook hops the otherside. This works whatever the gap between the two. This is more similar to rokagogo. What was Black's last move? It can only have been Kg6-h5, fleeing check. But what was White's prior move: it could only have been a fairy piece moving to h5 from the diagonal c2-f5, discovering check. Then this piece was captured by bK. What kind of piece was it? The idea is that for each feasible piece, there should be exactly one corresponding promotion mate.

1) Camel = (1,3)-Leaper
2) Eagle
3) Gazelle = (3-5)-Leaper
4) Giraffe Quintessence = right-angle turn Girafferider, Giraffe = (1,4)-Leaper
5) Greater Leafhopper
6) Greater Treehopper
7) Nightrider
8) Quintessence = right-angle turn Nightrider
9) Rookhopper

Minor duals, where both solutions are separately provided elsewhere:
1) Gnurider
2) Marguerite = Eagle+Grasshopper+Hamster+Moose+Sparrow, only the first two sub-creatures are used)

Tries:
1)It looks as if one might rotate the board 180 degrees: 1. Bb3#! Not 1. b3+? Kxa3!
The position is legal because e.g. R: 1. g8=B+.
However this doesn't work because it's not thematic :)
2) It looks as if R: 1. Kg6-h5 c2-c3+ might be good. Who's to say in a fairy form that wL can't begin on b1? Well if you can show me a fairy piece which can throw other pieces around the board, then let's consider it, but fairy conditions are excluded here, for sanity's sake.

Would be cooks - but the soundness is protected by the halo of PPRA :)
Bishop Eagle, Boy Scout, Dabbaba, Equihopper, Lancer, Moarider Lion, Radial Leaper
AB: See P0001924. Bedrich Formanek is happy with his problem, but welcomes a larger zoo.

I think this is a kind of PRA problem (although PRA is defined currently only for castling and ep). A PRA problem is regarded has having one solution with many parts. So maybe that points the way how to stipulate the problem. The joke version PRA (= Partial PRA) says that PRA applies to all the parts that it does, but not to the others, particularly those with no solution).

It's clear that there are more pieces which would solve the problem. Why not Gnurider or Gazellerider instead of Gnu or Gazelle? Why not Gnurider instead of Nightrider? Etc. Why not Grasshopper instead of Rookhopper? The PRA notion would prevent these from cooking the problem: each is indeed a separate part. As long as whatever was just captured can be uniquely reborn to deliver mate, the problem is sound. The published solution shows the most basic representative piece for each of the patterns, with no unused capability.

As a PRA problem, if a kind of fairy piece might legitimately have been captured on h5, yet does not offer a mating promotion, that would make the problem unsound. And indeed there are two such creatures known: Dabbaba and Lancer. However fortunately we are working with the looser PPRA meta-convention which only applies where it applies.

In earlier versions, the eagle was considered a try, but actually I think it implied an insoluble PRA part, but fortunately could be fixed.
Henrik Juel: if last move was Kg6xGh5, 1.gxh8=G#
if last move was Kg6xYh5 (Y=1,3-S=Camel), 1.g8=Y#
if last move was Kg6xYh5 (Y=rookhopper), 1.gxh8=Y# (This looks like a cook)
if last move was Kg6xYh5 (Y=5,3-S), 1.c8=Y#
if last move was Kg6xNh5, 1.b8=N# (2021-06-20)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik - as discussed: I don’t think Rookhopper is a cook, but is a separate part of the PRA solution. Maybe it’s the fundamental solution and Grasshopper is the one with unneeded additional functionality but Grasshopper is the more common one. Nice for some of these unfamiliar creatures to get some exposure... (2021-06-20)

HJ: last moves were something like 21... g5-g4+ 22.f2-f4 gxf3ep+
so it suffices to test the position with Pf3 on g5 and a wP added on f2
C++ means C+ plus that no shorter solution can be found.
A.Buchanan: The definition of Pronkin seems over-narrow, in two ways:
(1) The original officer must be captured: why? Standardization of material can be achieved by later Ceriani-Frolkin of the promoted officer, or (if S or T) by capture of another officer. In *any* of these three cases, it's an achievement for the promoted unit to have doing a homecoming.
(2) And this capture must happen *before* the homecoming of promoted officer: again why? This is a similar timing irrelevancy to "Phoenix", where the proper concept is "Nix".
So there are all these other fine scenarios which are completely nameless. Not to moan: how to fix all this? (2021-07-04)
A.Buchanan: @Henrik, I like your concept of "C++" (the well-known programming language). For positions with checks in the final diagram clearly testing n & n-1.0 suffices. Where there is no check in the final diagram, then the testing should be n, n-0.5, n-1.0 & n-1.5. Even though this is a bit of a bore, in most cases the other cases are very quick. This is the minimum set of tests necessary to *guarantee* no shorter PGs exist. To me, it seems worth pushing that extra yard, because otherwise C++ will be tarred with the same subjective incompleteness as C+. (2021-07-04)

Also muss sich Weiß etwas Neues einfallen lassen.

A.Buchanan: Terrific composition, by a new composer (2022-05-04)
Henrik Juel: Welcome back, Andrew
Yes, a very impressive proof game:
The white rooks switch places, [Pg7] goes slowly to create a Phenix, and the white king backtracks after castling
The motivations for this fine content are fairly simple, so I can only hope that it has not been done before (2022-05-04)

19308 (Fadil Abdurahmanovic & Mirko Degenkolbe). I. 1.T:c8+! d:c8S!! 2.De6 Db5# (MM), II. 1.D:e8+! d:e8D!! 2.Ld6 Sb6#.
