The cluster of tries: Kh2-g1-f1-e1-d2-...-e8 0-0-0 Td7 is 12 moves: just too long.
In the diagram, e.p. is not permitted because last move might be g3-g4. So first shift sK to h4. Following the e.p., check that wK does now have prior move: Kf4-f3. Now sK scampers to e8 where through consequent forgetfulness it recovers castling rights.

Henrik Juel: The task of changing who has the move can be accomplished in 15 black moves:
1.La7 Kb2 .. 6.Lb8 Kb7 7.La7 Kc7 8.Lb8+ Kc8 9.La7 Kb7 .. 15.La7 Ka1 16.Lb8,
or, if it is Black to move:
1... Kb2 2.La7 Ka3 .. 6.La7 Kb7 7.Lb8 Kc8 8.La7 Kc7 9.Lb8+ Kb7 .. 15.Lb8 Ka1 (2012-07-26)
Mario Richter: Since the wL can lose a tempo on b6-d8, the OR can be done even faster:
WTM: 1.La7 Sb7 2.Lb6 Kb2 3.Ld8 Ka1 4.Lc7 Sd8 5.Lb8
BTM: 1. ... Sb7 2.La7 Sd8 3.Lb6 Sb7 4.Ld8 Kb2 5.Lc7 Sd8 6.Lb8 Ka1
My guess: diagram error. (2012-07-26)
TBr: Indeed, Mario, a diagram error just in "32 personaggi e 1 autore" (p.533), where the diagram is given as here -- but with piece count 10+11!
Correction in "La genesi delle posizioni" (p.217): Add white Pawn b7. (2012-07-26)
Henrik Juel: With a white pawn added on b7, the play by black king is a1-b2-a3-a4-b5 followed by a round trip, the orientation of which depends on who has the move, like in P0005205 (2012-07-26)
A.Buchanan: For an article I am writing, does anyone have any pithy quotes by Ceriani about ortho-reconstruction, preferably in Italian, please? (2023-08-10)

Olaf Jenkner: I tried hard to cook this one and I'm very pleased to see it could be sound. I consider this problem to be the longest correct selfmate.
Congratulations, Mr. Mintz! (2011-11-13)

YM: Before the publication of this S#255 (and previous S#259) has been a candidate for record shorter S#244 (with one of two endings of Karlheinz Bachmann).
Jeremy Morse found a way to extend the problem S#244 in two moves, but because of my original problems with the new endings (cook - problems!) did not published it.
I hope in future joint S#246 would be in publication, like I wanted. (2015-10-14)
YM: Also is possible an oriinal ending! A new idea almost automatically lead to a longer problem - S#270.
...today was sent like correction of s#255. (2015-11-06)
YM: Now the Record position is:

Yaakov Mintz &
Christopher Jeremy Morse

Ka7 Kb2 308. Dg7+ Kb1 309. Ka6 310. Ka5 311. Df6 312. Kb4 Dh1! 313. Df4 Dg1 314. Dfd4 Dh1 315. Dxf2 Dxf1! 316. Dfxf1 Kb2 317. Dd4+ Kb1 318. Ddd3+ Kb2 319. Dfe2+ Ld2+ 320. Dc3+ Kb1 321. Dd1+ Lc1 322. Dcd3+ Kb2 323. Dd4+ Kb1 324. Besser sei daher 307. ...
Olaf Jenkner: See "Das längste Selbstmatt" (Die Schwalbe June 2005):
The stipulation is s#340, Mintz's correction was published 1986.
The problem is cooked in 330 moves.
The longest correct selfmate is s#255 (P1091383) (2015-01-01)
Olaf Jenkner: The matrix was invented 1903 by William A. Shinkman. (2015-01-01)
A.Buchanan: Should the keyword be renamed then? How is it generally known? (2015-01-03)
Olaf Jenkner: In my opinion yes. We should ask Frank Müller. (2015-01-03)
Frank Müller: Ich darf dazu Sir Jeremy Morse in The Problemist July 2006, Seite 430, zitieren: "... and it now seems right to call it the 'Shinkman-Bláthy-matrix'. (2015-01-03)
A.Buchanan: OK thanks: I have renamed the keyword. Detail: I have now set up both the author and the keyword so that (1) they will appear with the Hungarian diacritical "á", but (2) they can be searched with either "á" or "a" (or wildcard "%" of course). I had set up "Høeg" the same way recently, and it seems to work. Please tell me if there are any issues. (2015-01-03)

James Malcom: The claimed s#330 solution shows up in Morse's book: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Chess_Problems/VpSXCwAAQBAJ?hl=en&gbpv=0. For the most part, it can be read in the preview. I reproduced it a long time ago. The full solution is below, in English notation, hidden so it doesn't chow down anyone's page. (2021-11-06)
