Henrik Juel: The rooks have switched place. Following -1... Rb8:S -2.Sb6, bRb8 retracts further to g8, bBd8 retracts to f8 and bPe6 to e7, to allow wK to exit via e6; retract bRh8 to h6 and h7xRg6 etc. wPg4 cannot retract until orig. wRh1 is home. This is the only Volet retro with a K in check, composed in Tom's youth, before he saw the light! (2003-11-25)
Thomas Volet: The exception in this case to the otherwise observed constraint of not having a check in the diagram or stipulation as to who is on the move relates to a collegial colloquy at the time with with the composer J.G. Mauldon, who was active in this task. (2022-03-24)
A.Buchanan: Terrific composition! Often in a Type C composition, one might retract the check to give Type B. But the thematic Ta8 here could not exist without a check in diagram. There are different areas of design space are accessible depending upon level of self-imposed constraints. Some retro composers like Baibakov systematically explore Types B&C as well as Type A. I don't see this as any kind of defect.
I particularly like that the lock on h-file only allows one sT to squeeze itself out. (2022-03-24)

Henrik Juel: Hello Moldenhauer
Your tests with Stelvio are much appreciated
Did you notice any improvement by version 1.11 over version 1.0? (2023-03-16)
Moldenhauer: Hallo Henrik Juel
Danke!
AMD Ryzen 3950X 16 Kerne 3 Jahre alt. (2023-03-16)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Moldenhauer (2023-03-20)

A.Buchanan: A nice trick for the parser which builds the animation would be to spot when a move is ambiguous. So here 16. ... Tb3 needed to be fixed to be 16. ... Tbb3. In this case, the animation guessed wrong and later reported that 19. ... Da8 was impossible. However in some cases, the error might not be picked up by a later illegal move, yet it could still be important. I will request that Gerd have a look at fixing this ancient issue. (2020-11-04)
A.Buchanan: 22.Tc8 was also imprecise, but did not cause a later illegality so there was no clue. Comparing the diagram at the end of animation to the start diagram would not necessarily be sufficient even for proof games, and completely inadequate for forward stipulations. It’s the parser can best nail these issues on a per-move basis. I’ve emailed Gerd (2020-11-05)
A.Buchanan: Gerd has fixed this: announcement 2020-11-7: The solution engine now no longer plays moves with ambiguous move notation in order to ensure that unambiguous solutions are added.
Thanks so much, Gerd! (2020-11-08)

Henrik Juel: I tried to test the first 16.0 moves, assuming that last move was f7xLf8=T+, with Euclide 1.01

A.Buchanan: How about eliminating the other three candidates for officer captured on f8? If that was done, might give more enthusiasm for pushing through with the L case. Also, I often find the demolition mode in Jacobi is good to run for a few minutes, to make sure I am not missing something “obvious”. (2021-04-08)

Note the natural notation of the Take&Make moves, far better than something like 3.bxa6[-wBa6,+wSa8], which should be written as 3.bxa6-a8=S (2021-10-23)
A.Buchanan: I will copy Gerd Wilts on your notation suggestion, which doesn't work quite now here but might be made to work - I agree it's superior. (2021-10-24)
Nightrider: What a pleasure to read this! I invented take&make, and I used the natural notation (like "bxa8-d8S") right from the beginning. Isn't it ideal if readers may understand the idea of a condition immediately by the notation of the moves?
By the way, the same holds for the (much more recent) condition make&take, where a move of a wSc3 that captures a bBg8 (for example) should be written analogously as S-f6xg8. Here again, does this natural notation not make clear on the spot what the basic idea of make&take is?
(And does it not look MUCH more elegant, for both conditions, if they are written in small letters exclusively and without blanks around "&" ? For me, it was always take&make and (years later) make&take. But, de gustibus non est disputandum...) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Hi Nightrider, thanks for kind words. I did email Gerd directly after the earlier post. He's pretty busy at the moment but in a few months thinks will have more time to deal with some items on the backlog.
For names, I agree that syntax varies. Sometimes it's down to taste, more often it's just random noise. There's also the question of "&" versus "and". (StrateGems uses both in one page!) In German, nouns are always capitalized, and the rest of PDB inherits that kind of uniformity, with the idea that PDB is just applying a local pattern, not trying to be authoritative in promoting a "canonical" way of writing each term. WinChloe has similar policy: Take & Make. YACPDB has Take&MakeChess. Search engines divide up words into atoms, so when I ask google for take&make I get "Take & Make" & "Take&Make" almost equally, so Google is blind to the distinct form that you prefer. Sorry. Henrik Juel: C+ by Natch 3.1 (8 s)
No solution in 12.5 (2018-12-27)
A.Buchanan: Good that you are checking for n-0.5. But why not check for n-1.0 & n-1.5: then it is certain that there is no shorter PG. (2018-12-27)
Henrik Juel: Good to hear from you again, Andrew
I started my Christmas testing project a couple of weeks ago
After testing lots of proof games in n, and making sure that n-.5 or n-1 moves had no solution, I noticed that in that sample n-1 moves never produced a solution, so, being a lazy slob, I now only check n-.5
Even your suggestion is not sufficient, as there exist constructed proof games with unique solutions in n and n plus several moves, but with 'regular' problems I believe that checking n-.5 almost always suffices
So far I have found a handful of cooks and just one example of a shorter solution than stipulated (2018-12-27)
A.Buchanan: If there is a solution in n moves, there are many solutions in n+2.0 moves: that is definite.
A reason for mindlessly testing as n-1.5,n-1.0,n-0.5 before testing for n is that one can catch many (but not all) cooks more easily.
From the solution in n, one can then see whether there might be the chance of an interesting solution in n+k, where k is not a multiple of 2.0. (2018-12-28)
