originally published as 23 Porter’s Spirit of the Times 7/ii/1857.
Initially attributed to “Q. B. M.” of Newberry, but this was later (28/ii)

Bestes Problem dieser Serie vom neuen Großmeister (WAB).
Komplizierter vollzügiger Wechsel zwischen Schlüsseldrohung, Drohung im 2. Zug und Lösung. Perfekt (BH).

Thematic try:
1 LIe6? A threats 2 LIc6# B (g6-c6 is closed)
1…Sd6 ad lib 2 Bxd5# C RLd7 is desactivated (2 LIc6+?? RLxc6!)
1… Sf5! 2 LIe5# D MNLg2 being interferred (Not 2 Bxd5+? RLxd5!)
(A technical detail here: not 2 MNLe5+?? Kf3!)

A.Buchanan: sSg2 observes but since it is unobserved, does not give check. d1 is observed but not attacked: this is important after the castling when wTd1 does indeed check sK. (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: Andrew, you seem to have changed the english name for Beamtenschach from Functionary Chess to Civil Servant Chess
I prefer Functionary, because it is closer to the french and danish names (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: ... also Functionary is used by Popeye and Jacobi (2022-01-25)
A.Buchanan: The definition speaks of Civil Servant, as a property that a piece may have. Or maybe that was auto-translated? The word "Functionary" is quite obscure and dull word in English, and is a very poor translation. Most English-speaking people will think first as having something to do with "Function". A much better translation might be "Bureaucrat", which is the term in Russian. However since I changed it to align with the definition, I've seen that this dull word "Functionary" has in fact already got some currency in other places, so I think I've probably got to change it back, and will alter the definition to correspond too. (2022-01-25)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Andrew; in your new PDB translation a single Civil Servant still lingers...
Beamtenschach was invented by german composers, who obviously named the condition in German; then it was 'correctly' translated into French as Echecs Fonctionnaires, and I guess the english name was derived from the french one
In an ideal world we should not translate fairy chess terms at all, and use the original name; this works fine for Köko, Circe Parrain, and lots of other fairy conditions
Unfortunately, the rivalry between the major western chess languages (German, English, French) seems to prevent a rational approach... (2022-01-25)

Henrik Juel: Add wLc8, wBf7, sDa1, sDh1, sTb4, sSa6.
White captured [Lc8], hxLg, and promoted on c8.
Black captured [Lf1], Tb3xb4++, a7xb6, c7xd6, fxexd, and promoted on d1 and h1.
The blackened squares have been included in the piece count, which should be (8+10). (2011-08-30)
Henrik Juel: It goes without saying that wK stands (or is added) on a4 (2021-10-31)
Mario Richter: I do not get the point here: f7=white pawn, c8=white Bishop are forced, but the rest of the pieces can be placed in many ways, e.g. sDa6,sDa4,sTh1,sSb4, wKa1.
So what am I missing? (2021-11-01)
