Yoav Ben-Zvi: WBd8 can be replaced with a BN after moving BPg7 to f7 and BPh5 to h6. (2018-08-08)
A.Buchanan: Yes after all these years, I found this a few months ago, but when I told Thomas Brand, he said that Werner Keym had found it - one of a series of modifications through seeking to avoid non-standard material. (2018-08-12)
Henrik Juel: Werner's improvement can be found in his 'Eigenartige Schachprobleme' from 2010, p.196, dia 1.68 (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: I thought it was more recent (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: In fact Werner was not trying to avoid non-standard material, but to prefer "cheaper" knights over bishops. But this is not the canonical ordering, which regards knights and bishops as equivalent. So the older record will win out in classical terms. (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: And non-standard material is no defect, according to the 1977 grading criteria, so old Theophilus reigns supreme (2019-10-04)
Henrik Juel: The further retroplay is
-1... h6 -2.a6 and e.g. -2... Ka7 -3.a5 Ta8 -4.Tb8 Ka6 -5.Kc8
and wK out via g6 (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: I don't know if a bishop is more expensive than a knight for these economy records. If modifying the criteria, I personally would prefer to minimize non-standard material. But more generally, how to handle a later version of economy record, with similar force? In some cases, the change is trivial, just transforming one unit which might as well be a dummy. At the other extreme, the matrix is completely different. In "Eigenartige Schachprobleme", Werner Keym stoically prefers the earlier record. Even the original composer(s) of a record problem are forbidden from making any artistic improvement to a published economy record! Over the years, the only change to the grading criteria is that Type C problem now needs to contain a check. Any old check-free Type C would a fortiori have been a Type B economy record at least. Here in PDB, I've tagged some cases of "ex-aequo" (search k='economy:eq') but I fear that Werner would not approve of this. What should we do? (2022-03-31)

Henrik Juel: Source is almost surely Caissa 1979 (CA stopped in 1930) (2020-12-17)
A.Buchanan: According to Werner Keym in ES, the original source is JM+WK Die Schwalbe 1984. That probably means that Werner modified P0001031 to tackle the different task here. I will adjust the source & authors accordingly. For these task problems, no-one tracks versioning, or afters. We just lump together all the composers who lent a hand. (2020-12-18)
Henrik Juel: OK, fine
Of course, this is also an example of First move by promoted Tg8, but not an economy record in this genre (2020-12-18)
A.Buchanan: Any last move which is promotion is implicitly a zero move for a the promoted unit. So I feel probably not worth adding the keyword of first move except for those which were intended as first move records. What do you think? (2020-12-19)
Henrik Juel: The same position with wSg8 was similar, but it was a double economy record, I think
The position with wTg8 is a last move record, but not a first move record, as removing Th7 and moving Ph6 to h7 is more economical
The first move problems with a zero move are not very impressive, so your approach is fine (2020-12-19)

because the black knight can be extracted only by retracting f7-f6, trapping white king (2020-12-13)
A.Buchanan: Some brave person should sort out the keywords for record retros properly. Here's a good example. The last move is Type B, but the first move question is Type A. The original stipulation (which I think is just about the first move?) should stand. The first move question is a *deemed* stipulation (new terminology) and allows us to leverage an existing problem, without creating a new version or editing the prior stipulation. This is particularly true here, since the problems are of different type. (2020-12-14)

Henrik Juel: Yes, probably
I know that 'Jan Robert Mortensen' is identical to 'Jan Mortensen'; he never used his middle name (2017-03-08)
A.Buchanan: It’s possible to put the middle name into the “addition” field in the author table, rather than have two names in the “first name” field. Then in overview list the middle name won’t appear, but it will still appear above each composition as here. Curiously the addition field is common across all four languages (German, English, French, Unicode) supported by the author table. There is no comment field to allow for random extra info to be stored, unlike the source table. So if we drop Robert, we lose it completely. (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the info, Andrew
I guess we will have to live with it
For Jan, there is really no risk of confusion
But for Knud Hannemann (son of the less illustrious composer Harald Hannemann) it is annoying to see him cast as Knud Harald Hannemann, just because it was a custom in his family that the sons were given the father's first name
They still use this custom in Russia, but with 'son of' added, e.g., Vladimir Vladimirovitch Putin (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: A chess problem example is Nikita Michaelovitch Plaksin
But the rendering of his name in the PBD also gives an obvious partial solution to my problem
Change the middle name of the two danish composers to the corresponding initial:
Jan R. Mortensen and Knud H. Hannemann (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the 'initialization', Andrew (2022-03-31)
A.Buchanan: OK fixed those, Henrik. HBae's original question concerned "Klaus Peter Kahl" vs "Peter Kahl". The former only has 2 problems here, and "both" collaborated with Jan Mortensen, so surely this is one person? (2022-03-31)
A.Buchanan: Kahls unified (2022-04-01)
Henrik Juel: I hear no protests from Osterholz-Scharmbeck, so that seems fine (2022-04-01)

Zvi Mendlowitz: This is a *great* problem!
Solution: Sd8-e6 (2004-12-07)

Other captures: black h7xg6xf5xe4xd3xc2 Captured pieces are random.
It’s *great* that d8 is only square for S. (2013-01-30)
Henrik Juel: Another try, d7-d5 as last move, fails, not because the access for [Lc8] is cut off ([Lc8] could have been captured on c8), but because following -2.b6xLa7 [Ta8] cannot get home when g7xLf6 is retracted (2013-01-30)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cage locking element in the try noted above is made thematic through 5-fold Echo
Tries:
-1.Pd7-d5 -- NW cage prevents escape of BRa8 to be captured by WPf2
-1.BPg7xBf6 -- Cage prevents escape of BBf8 to be captured by WPf2
-1.Nc5(d4)-e6 -- Blocks path of White Pa7 to f2

-6…Pd2-d3 -- Cage prevents escape of WBc1 to be captured by BPg7
-6…Pa3-a4 -- SW cage prevents escape of WRa1 to be captured by BPh7
-6…Ph3-h4 -- SE cage prevents escape of WRh1 to be captured by BPh7
Two other Retros by Yehuda Veisberg were printed in "The Israel Problemist" (1964) one from FCR and the other from "The Palestine Post" (2013-01-31)
Mario Richter: For -1.Pd7-d5 and …Pa3-a4 more precisely the reason for the illegality consists in a conflict between the uncapture of a bishop and a rook. (2013-02-01)
A.Buchanan: A satisfyingly unified little problem with precise tempo. WQR cannot be captured on c2 inside the White cage, since c2 is surrounded by dark-squared White units prior to Pd2-d3. BQR cannot be captured on a7 inside the Black cage, since BKB is too slow to reach any square for capture apart from a7 right at the end of the line. (2013-02-03)
Henrik Juel: It is nice to review this fine retro (although it would be even better, if it had not been necessary to stipulate that it is White to move)
The last three single moves are determined (2018-01-12)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Deleted "White to move", because this was not a part of the stipulation in the original. (2018-01-12)
Henrik Juel: Please undelete this again, Alfred
Without the knowledge that Black must start the retroplay, we can start with -1.b6xLa7 Lb8 etc., and the surprising intended solution -1... Sd8! vanishes (2018-01-12)
Alfred Pfeiffer: OK, but "White to move" is usually the standard in problems (except help problems). (2018-01-12)
Henrik Juel: Yes, Alfred; but there is no forward stipulation (like #2) in this retro problem (2018-01-12)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: Apparently Dawson considered the stipulation "What was Black's last move" as indicating that Black was the last to move and therefore equivalent to "White to move. Last move". An alternative could be "Last move. a)Black to move b)White to move". (2018-01-14)
Mario Richter: For 'Last Movers' we also have the "Type A", "Type B" etc. categories ... (2018-01-16)

A.Buchanan: Last move sure, but prior to that could be Kg1-h2, Kh1-h2 or even Kg1xTh2. wSa1 needs to be present so it wasn’t uncaptured on h2, but I think it can replace wLb2, which cannot I think be uncaptured on h2. Am I missing sth? (2022-07-15)
Mario Richter: Does the Kamikaze-rule only apply to Black's moves? Otherwise, how can the diagram position be reached from the initial game array?
If Kamikaze applies to White too, I think, wSa1 also prevents Tg1xSh1[-wTh1] as an alternative last move ... (2022-07-15)
A.Buchanan: Hi Mario: thanks for this. Kamikaze applies to both sides. By default it’s Rex exclusive so kings can go round mopping up odd pieces. Black used three of Pacg BQSS to capture wBRR inside the cage. I now see wSSBQ must remain on the board of else there may just have been a capture outside the cage. If there was just a Kamikaze capture inside the cage, it can only have been Q&R or S&R (or vice versa). e.g. bSf3xRg1(-bSg1). Since a1 is occupied, can’t get bK past wR to retract via b2. The game ends after 50 consecutive moves without captures or pawn moves (loss of castling right is not included here), or when there is not enough material to mate (say K-K or K-KS). There are 30 captures and 96 pawn moves (including 8 pawn captures) available, so the longest game seems to last (30+96-8)x50=5900 moves. This cannot be achieved because of the move-loss when the draw-preventing move shifts between white and black. Niels Høeg believed that 2 moves were lost and stated the solution as 5898.- Kb7xTa8. Karl Fabel later showed that only 1.5 moves need be lost.

Since 1926, there have been some relevant innovations to rules and conventions
(1) 50 move rule applies only to retro compositions, and will trigger automatically (no issue with writing down the move). (Codex 1953?)
(2) Removal of rules about draw by insufficient material (Laws 1997)
(3) Dead position rule introduced (Laws 1997)
(4) 75 move rule introduced (Laws 2014)
(5) Dead position rule applies only to retro compositions (Codex 2015)
(6) Articles 9.2 & 9.3 apply to chess problems - this includes 50 move rule and excludes 75 move rule (Codex 2019)

This is certainly a composition rather than a question about over the board chess. And it is certainly a retro composition. So the 50 move rule will dominate the 75 rule. The standard interpretation of interaction between 50 move rule and Dead Position in compositions is that Dead Position assessment *is* aware of looming automatic draw by 50 moves. (Note there is a similar assessment for interaction between Dead Position and Draw by Repetition.)

So we can argue that the game cannot last to 5898.5 moves, because the final move leads to a mandatory draw: either the king captures the last officer, or the king avoids the capture and the game ends in draw under the 50 move rule. So the position is dead at 5898.0. But even 5898.0 is too long for the diagram position with the kings so far apart. In the alternate reality if the last capture of a rook does not take place, there must be sufficient moves left for the kings to come together so that the rook can deliver checkmate. This will take at least 6.0 moves.

There is also still an ambiguity in the rules as to whether checkmate overrides draw by 50 moves. This is explicitly mentioned in the 75 move rule, but not in 50 move rule. I assume that checkmate *does* take priority.

Or does a valid problem only exist in the context of the rules and conventions that pertained at the time of its composition? The Codex does not opine on this general point.

A.Buchanan: There's a question whether DP rule has visibility of 3Rep & 50M state. The current consensus among most of the tiny group who might care is that for retros, it does have visibility, but for purely forward problems, it does not. This align with the idea that by default 50M & DP rules apply only to retros (2023-09-06)
A.Buchanan: The old intended interpretation is protected under the Golden Age principle. Suppose we do apply modern rules, codex & clarifications. If Black just played Kb7xRa8, then the alternative leading to mate takes 7.0 moves, so this must have been Black's 5892nd move at the latest. If White just moved, then it was White's 5892nd at latest. So to maximize the length of the game, Black moved last. (2023-09-06) edit (2023-09-06)

There is some choice in the retro path, but in the shortest resolution, the sK round trip is uniquely defined: e8-c8(castling)-b8-c8(switchback)-d7-d8-e8. Note that wTa, still stuck in its cage, was captured on c2.

Fuddled Men is a recent Fairy form invented by John Beasley, in which all men (including Kings) are unable to make 2 moves in succession. This is a Fairy form with great potential both on its own, and combined with other Fairy rules.
No. 2184 HN
Walter Lindenthal: Why not (b) as follows:
(b) 1. wKg2-h2 by White (provided bBg1 is 'fuddled' at that moment).
The wBf1 was captured possibly by a bS before (or the wK gave way for its capture), it need not have been ... Bfl-g2 h3xBg2 ...
So, the last moves: ... bPh3-h2 wKf1-g2 ... bPx?g1=B wKg2-h2
Yes, this will result in an 'automatic' Mate after black's next move, but it seems fully legal under Fuddled Men rules! (2021-01-17)
A.Buchanan: @Walter if "bPh3-h2 wKf1-g2 ... bPx?g1=B wKg2-h2" tHen what moves can be in the "..."? There are no spare black pieces to be uncaptured, as S&R are captured by wPg & wPh. (2021-01-17)

All captures are accounted for by hungry pawns, wBf1 died at home, & bPh waylaid. wPa & bPg can only have been captured on their home squares. bPc6 & bPd6 can't have just moved as they would close off bB homes. Most interestingly, wPd4 must have captured light-squared bB, but did not do so recently, as wPf3 would lock the south-east cage. Need Ng1 to shield wKh1, allowing bKg3. So the two last single moves are clear, and may have occurred in either order.

BTM the game is stalemate, WTM the game is dead.
If Black moved last it was R: 0. Kh4-h3 g2-g3+ retropat. So White moved last.
All missing pieces were captured by wP, and none can be undone immediately, even wPb3 & wPh7. However there is a try R: 0. Be8(f7)-h5? Kh4-h3 1. g2-g3+ Kh5-h4 2. B~-e8+. But then 0. ... Kh4-h3 was mandatory into DP, as White can't relieve the looming stalemate. The only solution is R: 0. ... 0-0 1. Kg2-h3, with many alternatives: basically anything but Kf1, Rg1 or Ne3, as Black must be allowed to respond Kg2. There is unique shortest “ghost play” h#1.5 living alternative to castling.
Objective: Type A Last move with uncastling
Henrik Juel: I see that retracting a2xb3 or g6xPh7 is no good
But R: 0.Le8-h5 Kh4-h3 1.g2-g3+ Kh5-h4 2.Sf7-e5+ Kh4-h5 3.e5xDf6 seems OK
Where is 'the looming stalemate'? (2022-04-09)
A.Buchanan: Retracting 1. Le8-h5 Kh4-h3 puts us in a position where Black’s move is mandatory and whatever White then plays, the position is stalemated (2022-04-10)
A.Buchanan: So in this line, the initial dead position was two single moves ago. One single move from dead position would suffice to show that Le8-h5 is not possible. (2022-04-10)

SCHRECKE: Why not R: Kb8xLa8? (2023-07-03)
Mario Richter: Dear James, I suggest that you undo last change and put the black bishop back on h5! (2023-07-03)
A.Buchanan: There are 17 valid squares for the wB. Got to be on a light square for reasons given. Also it can't occupy or attack c8. And can't be attacking a8 because BTM. I think h5 selection was random, but could argue for any. (2023-07-04)
A.Buchanan: Or maybe bBa4, with which White by his last move avoided a completely sound #12. (2023-07-04)
A.Buchanan: Hi Gerald, it's not a condition, it's a FIDE rule since 1997, invented by a problemist who is also a rules committee member (Igor Vereschchagin) and approved by the rules committee (headed by FIDE Head International Arbiter Stewart Reuben), backed up by a WFCC convention since 2015 (Kjell Widlert & Michel Caillaud, responding to a request from some endgame studiers who understood that it was a real thing. Like 50M rule, it applies by default for retro problems. And the PDB keywords here give the game away anyway. If it was a forward stipulation, then I would indeed add a stipulation, e.g. P1208623. Please enjoy the madness that is DP rule :) P.S. I have found recently that it was really invented by Shakespeare. (2023-07-04)

Why do you omit the check plus, when an uncheck occurs in the retroplay, like 34.Sc5-a4 a2-a1=D+ ? (2021-02-16)
Mario Richter: Henrik, we talked about the missing check signs already on the occasion of problem P1189314, the explanation is the same here: I do not use a physical chess board, instead I'm using chessbase light for forward play, and the GUI of 'retractor' as my chessboard for retroplay. 'retractor' has an option for output as text file, this are the retromove-sequences I use for input into the PDB. Unfortunately 'retractor' does not "produce" check signs, so I would have to add them by hand - and this is the question: spending my limited time to "beautify" the solution text, which makes it look a little bit nicer, but doesn't have any influence on the animation engine, or to use it for e.g. adding other problems to the PDB ... Wie viele verschiedene letzte Züge sind möglich?
29 Lösungen
play all play one stop play next play all

With White to move, last move could not be f7-f6, so it was Ta8-a7 (2021-04-14)
A.Buchanan: That was quick, Henrik! This is the first PDB problem validated by Retractor 2.0! Note that Black could also not have just played Kf7-e8. (2021-04-14)
Henrik Juel: Actually, I solved part a) by hand, but now it has been verified by Retractor 2.0, so your Computer test stuff is correct, Andrew (2021-04-14)
A.Buchanan: In principle, one could chain the output of an SPG engine into Retractor, to see if any other compositions with this stipulation can exist. Beyond trivial pawn nudges, maybe 3 is the lot? (2021-04-15)

Show that White castled.
Last move?
Henrik Juel: Black captured [Lc1,Lf1] with officers and the remaining missing white men with, e.g., a4xb3xTa2-a1=T and c4xb3xa2xTb1=T+, as the white rooks fell below the pawns
The only way to bring [Th1] to b1 is by castling (Ke1 could get out via a1, but after the black promotions he could not get back to e1)
Last move was a2xTb1=T+
