Die (Loydsche) englische Version der Forderung zielt nicht auf Eindeutigkeit ab: "Find how a stalemate might result in ten moves."

in 'Ruy Lopez' abgedruckt in der Rubrik "Partidas de fantasia"
AB: Not quite unique alas. 4 Dxc7 & 5 h4 can be transposed. (2001-10-17)
Kostas Prentos: Besides the minor transposition, there's another totally different solution:
1.c4 d5 2.Db3 Lf5 3.Dxb7 h5 4.Dxa7 Lh7 5.Dxb8 Ta6 6.h4 Th6 7.Dxc7 f6 8.Dxd8+ Kf7 9.Dxd5+ Kg6 10.De6= with many duals, too (2002-07-03)
AB: Yes, I was referring to uniqueness of proof game to reach the diagram position. KP responds to the task which appears here as the stipulation. (2002-07-07)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: What is the most simple stipulation that makes the solution unique?

My candidate: "Shortest game ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move"

I would add the length of the composer's solution as a courtesy to solvers: "Game in less than 10.0 moves ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move" (2012-08-27)
A.Buchanan: Hi YBZ: the proof game that Kostas gave 5bnr/4p1pb/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR has 12 solutions. 1.c3 gives another 12 solutions. And there's 2 solutions for Loyd. Out of these 26 indeed only one has the property that Wh gets all pawn moves out of the way before 4th move. But it's just occurred to me that there's a variant of Loyd which begins 1.c3 and wQ develops via a4 & a5, ending with 5bnr/4p1pq/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR this has 15 solutions, and in 6 of these, Wh plays both pawn moves as moves 1 or 2. Similarly if 1.c4. This only differs from Prentos' solution in the occupant of h7. So the suggested stipulation alas wouldn't work. I am pretty sure i have seen a longer version which is sound as a PG. (2020-05-28)
A.Buchanan: See P1004131 for a longer sound PG. (2020-05-28)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cook noted above means that a more elaborate secondary condition is needed. My suggestion:
"PG that is shortest to end in Stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and White plays 2 consecutive captures that are each longer than 2 squares".
An alternative is to accept the transposition:
"PG that is shortest to end in stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and wPc2 does not move, 2 variants". (2020-06-07)
A.Buchanan: Is it known that there are no h=n.5 (or h=n half-duplex) from the game array for n9? (2022-07-13)
A.Buchanan: I read Loyd’s stipulation more as a hard task for composers than a fair ask of solvers. Loyd was a genius so of course he came up with a great answer. Adding a latter-day secondary condition to give an arbitrary uniqueness is no help to solvers, and has an aesthetic price. I imagine that Loyd’s withering reaction - as he generally favoured conceptual elegance over rigorous dual elimination. Non-unique PGs are a bit old-fashioned, but they still have their place and James Malcom proves a master at their efficient construction. I wish that YBZ was still with us to possibly contest my point, RIP. (2022-07-13)

paul: Theme Valladao (2013-09-12)
James Malcom: An excellent Valladao with a castling paradox and Anti-Pronkin! (2021-01-23)
A.Buchanan: Normally, castling paradox would employ *both* K&R heading back home after the dalliance. There's non-standard material which to me seems a defect in a Valladao. No-one here was able to agree on what Anti-Pronkin is, so the term has been retired. I guess it covers everything which is not a Pronkin: from Allumwandlung to Zilahi :-) (2021-05-19)
Michel Caillaud: Anti-Pronkin (from FIDE Album "Theme definitions") :
A promoted piece is captured. The corresponding piece of the same colour from the game-array moves onto the promotion-square.
So 1) it doesn't cover everything which is not a Pronkin 2) it is not present in this problem (2021-05-21)
A.Buchanan: I was confusing the term with "Anti-Phoenix" oops.
As Michel says, this problem does *not* show Anti-Pronkin as per Michel's FIDE definition. The promoted piece is never captured.
The "Pronkin" theme in the V&V Encyclopaedia wisely does not requires that the original unit is captured. There has to be some credit for a unit reaching a thematic target square at all, irrespective of the fate of the unit. In the current problem, we could still imagine a Prenix after Lc1 for example to regularize the material: why couldn't that still class as Anti-Pronkin?
Unit quests & regularization of material should be keyworded separately. And there should be a proper symmetry between Pronkin & Anti-Pronkin themes, imho. (2021-07-31)

A.Buchanan: We’re missing some keywords for stalemate and mutual stalemate objectives. Also what are construction task and record and what’s the difference? (2020-11-19)
Henrik Juel: Euclide 1.01 found no solutions in 17.5 moves (30 hours), so it is extremely likely that all shortest proof games last 18.0 moves (2020-12-01)

A.Buchanan: The definition of Pronkin seems over-narrow, in two ways:
(1) The original officer must be captured: why? Standardization of material can be achieved by later Ceriani-Frolkin of the promoted officer, or (if S or T) by capture of another officer. In *any* of these three cases, it's an achievement for the promoted unit to have doing a homecoming.
(2) And this capture must happen *before* the homecoming of promoted officer: again why? This is a similar timing irrelevancy to "Phoenix", where the proper concept is "Nix".
So there are all these other fine scenarios which are completely nameless. Not to moan: how to fix all this? (2021-07-04)
A.Buchanan: @Henrik, I like your concept of "C++" (the well-known programming language). For positions with checks in the final diagram clearly testing n & n-1.0 suffices. Where there is no check in the final diagram, then the testing should be n, n-0.5, n-1.0 & n-1.5. Even though this is a bit of a bore, in most cases the other cases are very quick. This is the minimum set of tests necessary to *guarantee* no shorter PGs exist. To me, it seems worth pushing that extra yard, because otherwise C++ will be tarred with the same subjective incompleteness as C+. (2021-07-04)

Judge Hans Gruber (Best Problems 105/2023, p.572-576): "This is a miracle! Although the author showed in a number of publications around the year 2000, that hundreds of threefold chameleon echoes exist in problems without twinning, which seriously limits the innovation value of such problems, I consider this problem – with only two echoes – as outstanding. The quality of the moves and the reasons why their order is unique, is fascinating. Why should manoeuvres by the black king and the white queen (!) be unique on an open board, without constraining fairy conditions, and with the need to reach in two solutions two opposing edges of the board? The provision of appropriate hurdles for the grasshoppers is the key feature. The ingenious find is that the move Db1 (played at different moves) constrains the black king to the a-file in the first solution while it offers him the whole board for a virtuoso slalom run in the second solution. A sensational problem in terms of agility, and I do not care that the computer helped to find it. Still, the composer had to discover this gem in an almost infinitely large data base."

Tema Valladao of course."

Dezember 2022.]
