If wK castling right remains, the only way to give White a prior move is to retract f7-f5, so ep would be on.
The key threatens (inter alia) 2. 0-0#/Kf2#, and both remain whatever Black plays, so the castling retro-justification for ep can never be disrupted.

1. cxd6ep
paul: Since the wB couldnt leave c1, the captured piece on b6 is the promoted wPh2. If last black move was f7-f5, then h-Pawn captured four pieces to promote on d8, among which bRh8, impossible. Thus, the h-Pawn could only have been promoted from f7 and therefore d7-d5 remains as the last move. (2011-07-02)

A.Buchanan: There is a good try here. It seems that there are two possible pawn histories. In the one in the given solution, wBef cross-capture, while wBah are waylaid (= captured by officers on their own original files). In the other, sBef cross-capture, while wBah capture to promote. In the latter case, could sS or sT uncapture a white officer which, following various parity-fixing adventures, unpromotes on b8, and then gives White the necessary tempi? The Black cross-capture would have been wBe2-6 sBf7-f6xe5 wBf2-f7 sBe7xf6-f5. I could imagine a situation with sSd8, sTc8, wDb7. Then R: 1. Db8-b7 a7-a6 2. b7-b8=D Tb8-c8 3. a6xSb7 Sc5-b7 4. Kg8-f8 Sd3-c5 5. Kf8-g8 Sf4-d3 6. Kg8-f8 Sg6-Sf4 7. a5-a6 Sf8-g6 8. a4-a5 Te8-e7 retropat. In this line, wPh3 was not waylaid, so can't get that extra critical tempo. a3-a4 is not possible because then wTa1 could never have escaped its home. (2022-01-24)

Mario Richter: How is the ep-key justified here? (Perhaps some kind of AP?) (2010-06-15)
Gerd Wilts: The author's reasoning is 1. Sxc5? 0-0-0!, but if Black can castle, then White can capture en passant: 1. dxc6ep. But this if of course not correct according to the Codex. (2010-06-15)
A.Buchanan: The only problem with having this as PRA is that the part where ep & 000 are both off is cooked. That could be fixed by e.g. adding bPf6 & wPg7. But the composer is saying that this problem already works as AP, if we allow the try 1. Sxc5? (or equally 1. Se5?) to *prove* that 000 is ok, which implies that ep is ok too. (2022-05-24)

Analysis
White is missing one man, so last move was not a pawn capture
White pawns captured all six missing black men, so last move was not d7-d5
Obviously last move was not made by Ke7 or Sd8f8, so last move was f7-f5 legitimizing the ep key (2020-11-02)

Henrik Juel: The motto is very apt
Why did you not frame the problem as a standard s#16, James? (2021-01-15)
James Malcom: It's probably because it was my first great leap at a long selfmate, and I didn't quite know all the conventions just yet. A color reversal should suffice for a C+ test. (2021-01-15)
SCHRECKE: C+, Gustav 4.1d, Brute Force (color reversal + rotation by 180 degrees) (2021-01-15)

Preisrichter Petko A. Petkov in Mat Plus 2009:
A new development of the unique “Vielväter” position which has up to now over 1000 different modifications according to the combination of possible stipulations, conditions, form of the board etc. This new opus
favourably impresses with its great diversity of conditions in twins and especially with its long solutions.
Gunter Jordan: Entweder fehlt bei e) noch eine Bedingung (Köko??) oder die Lösung ist falsch aufgeschrieben. Oder beides. (2023-12-09)
