A.Buchanan: This is a cool problem with tempo loss for both players (bK9 & wPf2). Noam likes to end proof games with checkmate, and in this case I guess it serves to eliminate shorter solutions which would otherwise save half a move. Checking 16.5 is sufficient for soundness. Thanks for taking the time to test. (2023-01-11)
A.Buchanan: Bit baffled how there can be 64 solutions in 18.0 moves since White just moved. 18.5 maybe? (2023-01-11)
ras@bsiag.com: Quickly checked because 45h seemed a lot for only 17.5 moves and only a few captures: Stelvio 0.98 is done in 210 seconds. (2023-01-11)
ras@bsiag.com: Well, Stelvio treats shorter solutions of same parity as cooks, so any shorter solution in 16.5, 15.5 etc would have been found by checking for 17.5. But anyhow, quickly checking 16.5 is done in a few seconds, finding no solution (of course). (2023-01-12)

A.Buchanan: I imagine that e.g. 12. ... Tc8 would allow the removal of the "exactly" limitation, which is unsavory in a tempo problem. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Yes confirmed C+ BP 12.0 after 12. ... Tc8 with Euclide 1.11. (2018-12-12)
A.Buchanan: Ronald wrote: As far as i'm concerned a game in 11 moves doesn't solve a proof game in 11.5 moves. The normal stipulation (in those days, in English) was "Position after White's 12th move. What was the game?" Which is specific and is in English, as against "PG11.5".

I happen to disagree with Ronald's position on the vexed "exactly" question, particularly for a tempo problem. But I do defend his right to retain his original stipulation associated with the problem. It is part of his creative work and as a matter of respect, scholarship and insurance it should never be over-written. There is a dependency in PDB between the animation and the diagram stipulation, which encourages over-writing. We need a unicode Originalforderung field (or maybe keyword parameter) which can contain the original stipulation in its entirety. Obviously most stipulations are unaffected, but retros are more vulnerable. Having the Originalforderung field would also free up the diagram stipulation for *greater* automation (e.g. standardization on language, helpmate, try, set play, decimal-comma-or-decimal-point, which would allow much more focused search than is available now, and a similar kind of auto-translation to what occurs in keywords and fairy pieces today). Adrian Storisteanu: Not quite. White in fact never plays a waiting move. In the set play Sh4 must move in order to protect h4, while 1...g3 in the solution is not tempo - a straight 2...g2-g4#? would not be mate: 3.hxg3e.p.!

A.Buchanan: There was a discussion in MatPlus a while back about tempo loss, which was the theme of a tourney. I entered with the same perspective as you. It's only tempo loss if the move could be replaced by a "what". P1007491 hingegen "Loss of tempo"? (2018-10-21)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Mario
Other things in the never-ending Keyword discussion include:
Tempoverlustmanöver is currently called the same in english and french, and has no definitions
Loss of tempo (Tempoverlust in german) is defined as
'With White to play, a sequence of moves to reach the same position with Black to play. (Help game, abbr .: TV)'
which makes little sense in proof games
In this problem [Pe2] goes e2-e3-e4 ('wasting' a move)
In P1007491 [Pc2] similarly goes c2-c3-c4-... and [Lc8] goes (among other things) c8-b7-a6-c8 ('triangulation') (2018-10-21)

"Interessantes Circe-Geschehen, thematisch aber schwer einzuordnen. Als Minimal aber sehr gefällig." (eb)
"Eine erfrischende Circe-Aufgabe" (HMo).
Der Autor merkt zu dem Stück an: "It shows a Circe-specific tempo idea, executed by both Black and White. Under Circe, a unit on its home square can make an 'absolutely pure' tempo move if it is then captured and reborn"
"very pretty" (LV).
HJä: "1.- Th7 und 1.La3 sind wirklich geistreiche Circe-Wartezüge. Sehr schönes Minimal."
16+3.5/5P
A.Buchanan: This is really wonderful. and I wonder if its thematic originality and apparent simplicity maybe denied it a higher prize. Note how three Black units, which all have other day jobs, block wK from executing the White waiting move. On the other hand bRg1 can’t do the black waiting move, again for check reasons (2021-06-24)
A.Buchanan: And why have the bRg1 anyway? Well, it prevents a large number of cooks in a, because otherwise wRd1 can't be captured as it will respawn on h1. On the other hand it prevents premature check in b, and the respawn on a1 *is* an issue. Harmonious asymmetry, in both cases requiring that b1 & d1 be cleared, and that all the pieces have multiple roles. (2021-06-24)
A.Buchanan: Where a theme appears both for white and black also can be more challenging than where the theme is echoed by the same player in the twin. The position needs to be fundamentally reperceived in such a twin, and to achieve great economy is even more laudable, imho. (2021-06-25)

A.Buchanan: There is a good try here. It seems that there are two possible pawn histories. In the one in the given solution, wBef cross-capture, while wBah are waylaid (= captured by officers on their own original files). In the other, sBef cross-capture, while wBah capture to promote. In the latter case, could sS or sT uncapture a white officer which, following various parity-fixing adventures, unpromotes on b8, and then gives White the necessary tempi? The Black cross-capture would have been wBe2-6 sBf7-f6xe5 wBf2-f7 sBe7xf6-f5. I could imagine a situation with sSd8, sTc8, wDb7. Then R: 1. Db8-b7 a7-a6 2. b7-b8=D Tb8-c8 3. a6xSb7 Sc5-b7 4. In this line, wPh3 was not waylaid, so can't get that extra critical tempo. a3-a4 is not possible because then wTa1 could never have escaped its home. (2022-01-24)

Henrik Juel: The position can be reached in 18.0 moves: the first 3.0 as above, then Black plays as above, while White plays f3 and 14 tempo-moves like Sh3-g1.
Changing the stipulation to 'Proof game in exactly 18.5 moves' may rectify the situation.
The intended White play is very nice: Roundtrip by Ke1, needed by the triangulation on e3-f4-f3-e3, and roundtrip by Sg1, which screens on d4. (2011-03-14)
A.Buchanan: The preferred trick in such situations is to add an extra half move. So I'd try 19. ... Lg8: is that sound? (2017-09-14)
Henrik Juel: I tried to test 19... Lg8, but Euclide was too slow (2017-09-14)
Mario Richter: rawbats say that appending 19. ... Lg8 allows many alternative solutions, e.g. 1. c3 h5 2. Da4 h4 3. Dc6 dxc6 4. f3 Lf5 5. Sa3 Lh7 6. Tb1 Dd4 7. Ta1 Da4 8. Tb1 e6 9. Ta1 Se7 10. rawbats also says that Henrik's suggestion of changing the stipulation to 'Proof game in exactly 18.5 moves' will make the problem correct. (2017-09-18)
Mario Richter: I forgot: ... but since "loss of tempo" is the theme of the problem, this change of stipulation is IMHO not an option here. (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario, and I agree with you about the aesthetics of change. After posting my Lg8 suggestion, I did regret it because it's doubly suspicious. Firstly, the bishop can sneak past bRh8; secondly it takes the bishop's eye off d3 & c2. A more serious guess is to replace the last black moves by 16... Rh6 17... Sf8 18... Rf6 19... g6. This might fail for what in my head I call the "jigsaw" reason: that the known sub-chains of moves no longer mesh together in a unique way, but I don't think it fails for any other reason. Prove me wrong, stout rawbats! :D (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Sorry Henrik I should also have said thank you for trying to validate my dumb earlier suggestion :-) (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Typo, I meant: 16... Rh6 17... *Sh8* 18... Rf6 19... g6 sorry :( (2017-09-18)
Mario Richter: with the last black moves changed to 16... Rh6 17... Sh8 18... Rf6 19... g6 (final pos: 7n/pppnkp2/2p1prp1/2b2b2/q2r3p/2P2P2/PP1PP1PP/RNB1KBNR) rawbats thinks the problem is correct (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Thank you, Mario. Obviously the composer could easily have fixed this if he was aware of the concern. His KS round trips are fantastically meandering, and the precise W&B play are very interdependent. I am amazed that there is only one composition in PDB by this top level composer, so I've found another to post quickly. He has a website http://open.mixi.jp/user/10857363/diary, with lots of erudite commentary in Japanese on top Western retros. Thank you, google translate! (2017-09-18)

Pairs of repeated diagrams marked (*)
Nikolai Beluhov: Throughout the game, three different positions had to be repeated two times each (with the other side on the move) in order for the position to be formed.
The theme of loss-of-tempo-motivated position repetition was deeply explored by Luigi Ceriani (1894-1969) and is present in many of his works, including numerous ortho-reconstructions.
I only know of two twofold implementations: P1183992 by Ceriani himself (possibly a version by N. Plaksin or A. Kuznetsov of P0002948) and P0005418 by S. Volobuev (with a "#1" stipulation which determines the side to move in the diagram position). D. Baibikov's problem presents the first ever threefold implementation. (2011-01-02)
A.Buchanan: “fake game array” (FPI) is another special case of Ceriani’s player inversion (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: This is a wonderful problem. The repeated diagrams are where wDb8 & sLb7. There are sequences e.g. n. Db8~ Lb7-c8 (*) n+1. Dd8-b8 La8-b7 n+2. Dc8-d8 Lb7-a8 n+3. Db8-c8 (*) La8-b7. Need to ensure that over this sL shifts from c8 to a8, otherwise there are unnecessary additional repeated diagrams. Have fixed the solution given above. (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: “Position” is diagram + the move + castling rights + e.p. status. What is repeated is a diagram. Given that the stipulation was in Russian originally, I dare to change the stipulation here... (2021-02-25)

Were any diagrams repeated during the game?
Nikolai Beluhov: This problem was published as a part of the Shakhmaty v SSSR 1977 New Year solving tourney. It is probably a version of P0002948 (Luigi Ceriani, La Genesi delle Posizioni, 1961, N49), even though I think that the CPDB diagram for the last problem must contain some typo.
Throughout the game, two different positions had to be repeated two times each (with the other side on the move) in order for the position to arise. Compare P0005418 (S. Volobuev, Thèmes-64, 1986) as well as the threefold implementation in P1183971 (D. Baibikov, Schachmatnaja komposizija, 2010). (2011-01-02)

Das Tempoverlustspiel umfasst also 23 Züge.
Anton Baumann: Kurzlösung: 1.Le8 Dg8 2.Lxc6! Sxf5! 3.Ld5 Sd4 4.e7 Lxe7 5.Lxg8 nebst 6.Lxc4 7.Sb3 Lc7 8.Sxd4 Lxb6 9.Kxb6 10.Sc6#

Ist es egal, ob man 25. Le7 oder 35. Le7 spielt?
Anton Baumann: ausser wenn der sK nach f8 zieht, kann der Zug Ld8-e7 zu einem beliebigen Zeitpunkt erfolgen (also 26.Le7 oder 27.Le7 ...); desgl. ist der Zeitpunkt für Le7-Ld8 nicht fix (zB. 63.Ld8 oder 64.Ld8 ...) (2022-09-08)

Objective: fastest Staugaard (Pam-Krabbé) + another castling (happens to be kside)
A.Buchanan: Now we know more about Conrad Staugaard and his life, I enthusiastically agree with Henrik's earlier suggestion that we change this theme to be "Staugaard", which would also align with WinChloe. I can make necessary changes in PDB as a batch, and retain also "Pam-Krabbe" as a deprecated keyword, pointing to Staugaard. Pam & Krabbé are famous already, and only popularized Staugaard's funny idea. Any objections? (2021-05-08)
A.Buchanan: OK thank you: I've made the move. Please check the definitions, and let me know anything that needs changing (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Very good, Andrew; the Staugaard fan club (both of us) thanks you
You might want to add that after a white Staugaard castling, wK is on e3 and promoted wR is on e2
I wonder whether the solution notation should be changed to 0-0-0-0-0 with 5 zeroes, so that the number of zeroes is one less than the length of the rook displacement for all three castlings (2021-05-09)
Henrik Juel: Forget my very last remark, please
Short and long castling has rook displacement = number of zeroes,
so Staugaard should remain with 6 zeroes, of course (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Ok listed the target squares as requested. (2021-05-09)
A.Buchanan: Curious that this economy record must begin with a tempo move (2021-05-20)
A.Buchanan: Staugaard seems a much better basis than Chess960 for further generalization of castling. Basically move an unchecked royal king 2 unattacked square towards the rook, and the rook hops the otherside. This works whatever the gap between the two. This is more similar to rokagogo. A.Buchanan: The program which is loading these automatically to PDB is throwing in some extra ")" characters into the keyword parameters. There should also be no comma in "T,s" because they are not separate phases. And the solution format is bogus. (2021-10-04)

A.Buchanan: So what's the idea, Henrik? (2022-03-07)
Henrik Juel: If the proof game were in 11 moves, White could just capture [Dd8,Pf7,Pg7] with Sc3, and leave [Pe2] standing
But in 10 moves the tempo is wrong for this plan, and it is corrected by a roundtrip by [Pe2] lasting 9 moves
Very good (2022-03-07)
A.Buchanan: Thank you Henrik, but this is not the theme. Another incidental feature is that every piece which moves more than once has an interrupted journey. But what is the purpose of wSc3, for example? (2022-03-07)
Henrik Juel: White has to move after 4... Kd7, and 5.Sc3 seems safe (2022-03-07)
A.Buchanan: Hint: 5.Sa3 would not be thematic (2022-03-07)
Henrik Juel: I give up
What's the (big) idea? (2022-03-07)
A.Buchanan: See recent discussion at P1399601. This is a shortest SPG that forces a full designation for a source square (W10) and then restores to standard material. This is also maybe possible for Queen or Bishop, but requires two promotions so is longer. It’s never possible for rook. Currently this corner case breaks the PDB animation. (2022-03-07)
Henrik Juel: OK... Points for a well hidden idea, I guess
10. Sg3-e2 should work fine for the animation
And for retro play full notation is standard (even for me, although it took a long time) (2022-03-07)
