Frank Müller: Gemäß Originalquelle ist es eine Mattaufgabe! (2013-12-13)
Muzzarelli Gilbert: Après 55. hxg6, les Noirs annulent par 55...Sf7+. Si 56. g6xSf7 - Kxf7. (2013-12-15)
Anton Baumann: Vermutlich ist 37.Sec3 kürzer; mögliche Zugfolge: 37.Sec3! Kd4 38.Sd1 e5+ 39.Kg4 e4 40.Kf4 e3 41.Sxe3 Kd3 42.Sa3 Kc3 43.Sd1+ Kb3 44.Sxb2 Kxb2 45.Sc4+ Kc3 46.Se5 Kd4 47.Kf5 Kd5 48.Sg6 fxg6 49.hxg6 mit Matt im 61. Zug (2013-12-19)
James Malcom: This is cooked, as after hxg6, the tablebases give the position as a draw with 67... Nf7!+ gxf7 68. Kh6 Kg8. Even worse, the next best Black move produces a mate in 16, much beyond the given 12. (2020-11-18)
#65 (2020-11-19)
James Malcom: Thus the problem is cooked even still. (2020-11-19)

Henrik Juel: The stipulation says 355 moves, but the solution says 335.
Could we get some details of the main variation, please. (2011-11-01)
Mario Richter: Correct stipulation is "Matt in 335 Königszügen". (2022-10-07)
Henrik Juel: the last move in this monster problem should be 335.Kxg3 (2022-10-07)
James Malcom: Fixed. (2023-03-07)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Mario and James (2023-03-07)

James Malcom: Certainly, this is dualed, but is a correct #27. Ultimately, it is Blathy and it is intentional. As such, it is not ooked. (2022-04-12)

James Malcom: This seems computer testable, excluding the minor duals that there are. (2020-11-18)
Olaf Jenkner: Yes, Gustav gives 65 duals in less than one second. (2020-11-18)
James Malcom: But seeing as how that is part of the intention, clearly, and this is still a widely accepted and reprinted problem, is it C+ with the duals in mind as allowed? (2020-11-19)
SP: Though many problems exist where unsoundness is part of the intention, such as separators in solving tourneys, this is obviously not the case here. Are you seriously suggesting that if Bláthy could show his idea without the duals he would not have done so? (2023-07-10)
Olaf Jenkner: It's an old question what C+ means.
There are promotion duals, triangle manoevres and other stuff what we call "tolerated duals".
In this case I'd think C+ means "computer confirmed the author's intention".
It's different from FIDE rules. (2023-07-10)

An elongated version of P1372653 by four moves; the original origins are unknown

Move length record for a kindergarten problem
A.Buchanan: Any kind of assessment of soundness of this one? (2020-11-19)
James Malcom: Andrew, there is no doubt about the soundness. Sure, the ending may have a few duals, but those are generally acceptable in Blathy's correct work. Here is the proof.

All White pawns are immobile. The kingside mustn't move, or else Black breaks through and wins. Nor can a7, b2, or b6 without losing the winning chance.

The Black king is stuck, of course. The Black kindgside pawns are forever held up by White's, and the queenside ones can't move, or else Black would soon be in zugzwang and lose.

Lastly, the White king can't go after the Black pawn to shorten the game, or the Black queenside pawns must be tended to. If the White king reaches either e5 or f4, then Black plays b4!, threatening to queen soon. So the White king must hurry back, Black gets the White queen stuck as well, and it is a draw.

With a restricted White king to the given triangulation corridor, the Black king stuck, all pawns pawns frozen on their journeyes, the soundness is guranteed. (2020-11-19)
James Malcom: Furthermore, on move 99 with Black to move, chess.com analysis agrees with checkmate in move 112, albeit with a few move order corrections that I've just made. So it is still correct, with a Blathy style taste in duals. (2020-11-19)
Anton Baumann: Nach 99.

Was übersehe ich da? Duale wie z.B. 21.Kc7 und 21.Scb4, die auch auf dem "Hinweg" des Königs zu verzeichnen sind.
Trotz allem, wie immer eine sehr große Leistung des Ausnahmekomponisten Blathy!"
msterkowiec: I think "duals" like 14.Kc1/c2 15.Kc2/c1 are inherent for this position type (Sea Snake/dual zugzwang with pendulum black figure, typically rook, and white king struggling to lose tempo) when white king turns back/loses tempo. What's interesting in one of the most lengthy moremovers of this type (http://www.yacpdb.org/?id=278027 #210 rBb5/P2p4/P2Ppp1p/1B1p1p1B/2prn3/KRnk4/3p4/b4N1N) it is black bishop that is the "pendulum".

Manoeuver by white knight may be considered an enhancement to this position type (white knight has to move away from white king's path) however the side effect of this enhancement is this slight dual (both in 7th and 21th move) (2021-05-29)

... Sf3+). (2023-07-08)
msterkowiec: I think it is a great finding that this is #163 (not #169). And really surprising that the position has more complexity and subtleness than the superb composer/engineer expected. I adjusted/enhanced accordingly the piece of software I develop and I can confirm that the problem can be successfully solved as #163. There are only minor details that seem to not match with the variants presented above: 1... e5 does not seem really the best defence. It looks like e7-e5 can be postponed e.g. this far: 1. Bc1 Ra6 2. Kb7 Ra5 3. Kc7 Ra6 4. Kd8 Ra5 5. Ke8 Ra6 6. Kf7 g5 7. Kg6 e5 still not allowing for mate shorter than #163. As a consequence variant 1... Ra6? should rather not be marked with question mark as a weak(er) defence. (2023-07-28)
Olaf Jenkner: 1... e5 is the best defence because the variation is 163 moves long.
Your proposal 1. Bc1 Ra6 2. Kb7 Ra5 3. Kc7 Ra6 4. Kd8 Ra5 5. Ke8 Ra6 6. Kf7 g5 7. Kg6 e5
shows wrong play by white. As you can see in the solution above, 4. Kd8 is not correct. (2023-08-04)
msterkowiec: Yes, you're right, 4.Kd8 was an obvious typo, anyway indeed looks like 1...e5 cannot be postponed without causing a short-mate. Now I can see that computer analysis shows it unambiguously - and finally my intuition also adjusted accordingly: after 1. Bc1 Ra6? 2. Kb7 Ra5 3. Kc7! white king is able to take advantage of e6-e5 not done and lose a tempo immediately after 3... e5 by 4. Kc8! (after 1... e5! this manoeuvre is no longer possible) (2023-08-04)

Henrik Juel: The position seems to be illegal, unfortunately
The single white capture was bxDa, and he promoted to L on a light square (c8 or g8)
Black pawns captured all six missing white men by axbxc, bxcxd, cxd, and gxf
The absence of [Pe2,Ph2] cannot be explained (2023-07-09)
Olaf Jenkner: Blathy didn't care about that.
I tested the last 170 moves and found no shorter solution.
The shortcut as in #169 (P1410779) doesn't work in this case.
If the king captures h5 to save time, then Sg3+ Sxg3? can not
guard square e4 because pawn f4 or f5. (2023-07-09)
Olaf Jenkner: Meanwhile Gustav is able to manage problems with 210 moves.
The solution was found at the same length. Of course it's far away from C+. (2023-07-10)
Henrik Juel: So we have a dualistic problem with illegal starting position
Maybe Blathy did not worry that much about duals either (2023-07-10)
Olaf Jenkner: I think the line above is dualfree, if we do not mention the minor duals near the triangle manoeuver. (2023-07-10)
