Reto: This is now the new record for the longest computer tested SPG. Strategy seeking takes up all the time, playing the 800 strategies on the other hand is done within a few seconds. (2023-08-11)
Reto: With the upcoming v1.6, this is solved by Stelvio in around 20min. The improvement is due to the fact that the cage in the south-west is now detected (either the wRa1 is captured inside the cage or the wBc1 is captured at home) (2023-09-02)

Kd8-e8 c2xDb3
Henrik Juel: A possible retroplay is -1... g7 -2.f3xP(-Pg7) b5 -3.f2 c6xP(-Pb2) -4.b2 a6 -5.Rc3 a7 -6.Rc1 b6xB -7.Bf8 b7 -8.Bg7xB etc. (2003-04-22)
Michel Caillaud: The problem is not cooked as indicated, as under A Posteriori convention both castles must be played in the solution to justify the en passant key. (2022-02-04)
A.Buchanan: If wK never moved, then Black has not just moved another non-capturing pawn, as White has no prior move. The only possible exception is R: 1. g7-g5 f/h3xPg4[+Pg7]. (2022-02-04)

Michel Caillaud: The original stipulation is #1 (durch wen?).
As wPe2 cannot be captured on its file, the 4 white captures for 4 Pawns to promote to Knights are (a2)xb3, (e2)xf3 and (f2)xg3 2 times, and wPb2 was captured on its file by (Dd8)xb6.
As b3-b2 (before (a2xb3)) and c7-c6 (before (Dd8)xb6) cannot be immediately retracted, only bK and wSs can play the last moves.
As indicated by Gerald, bK has to go to g8 to unlock the position, freeing bSg5.
When Ka3-a2 is retracted, previous white move places the 6 white Knights on black squares; the resulting Retro-Opposition implies that black is to play in the diagram position.

Missing: Wh: QRRBB Bl: QRBB
Captures: Wh: gxf3xe (inc B), hxg + [Bf8] Bl: axbxc (for Ba7) fxexdxc/e (g1 not possible)
Assume Black can castle: so neither bK nor bRa have moved. Before bPb7-b6 (which releases QB) *all* Bl captures have been made. wPd can freely advance, all Wh units released except for rooks & Bf1. gxRf3 is forced, and now all Wh units are free and can be captured. To avoid deadlock, wB was captured on e4 not e6. Sequence must be f7-f5 Rh8-f8-f6-...-f3gxRf3.
In this position wLe4 must be played back to f1. With bPh7, wBe4 must retract either by stopping on f7, (disrupting bK) or via f5 (implying retraction of f6-f5, in which case bRa8 is an imposter).
In the alternative route via h7, wB crosses over f7 harmlessly. While wB is on g5 & h4, f7 must be occupied by a static shielding knight, but there is no tempo issue. After all this excitement, b7-b6 if followed by simple and non-unique play to reach the diagram.

Henrik Juel: To make the retroplay plausible one should uncapture bQ early on g3 and retract it to d8. The wB could also get back to f1 via f5, but this would require retracting bRa8 to h8 before retracting bPf5, so castling is still illegal in part a). (2003-04-10)
Gerd Wilts: Hello Henrik, thank you for pointing out the inaccuracy of the solution, I will make the solution more precise soon. And thank you for adding all the other solutions! (2003-04-11)
A.Buchanan: Have posted a solution based on GW&HJ ideas. More often a j’adoube of a rook pawn signals a tempo idea, but not here. The surprising motivation harmonizes with accurate and varied forward play. (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: This problem was featured in yesterday's Monthly International Zoom Call, and was a great success, with audible gasps of appreciation, as the significance of h7 was realized :) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Oh dear, Alfred Pfeiffer has silently reverted the German keyword to "mit Umwandlungsfigur". I'm not going to enter an "edit war" with him, but I would appreciate if he can explain his position here. This is a problematic concept to keyword, but to me "mit Umwandlungfigur" is weak and inaccurate. What is the intended distinction with the existing keywords "Umwandlung" or "Umwandlungen"? It's hopeless. We have in PDB very many poor promotion keywords, and I would like to clean up progressively. I don't know if a native German speaker would care to engage with Alfred on this point. (2021-10-30)
A.Buchanan: To be clearer: to me the German definition seems pretty good. I think the term itself should give more of a clue what's happening :-) (2021-10-30)

The forward play gives shortest h# in 3.5 moves, *if* e.p. is on. Otherwise the shortest is a mildly dualized 4.0 moves. So our mission is clear: assuming that Black moved last, what was that move? The position looks very open - how can one ever know? There is a knot in the south-east corner, which will only be resolved by wQ/R visiting g1.

White pawns have captured dxexf & hxg, accounting for BSP. So wPa was waylaid while wPc promoted to B. Black pawns captured dxexfxgxh, exf as well as wBf1 captured at home and wPa. That's 7 units, but bPc must also have captured to allow wPc to promote (to B on c8). So all captured units are accounted for. bPc promoted (bPh7 came from h6, so is bPd). We can't undo any of the Black pawn captures now, but we can undo d2xe3xf4, to release 2 Black units.

We can unpromote bPc, but we can't undo its capture to release a White unit, until wBh3 has unpromoted. The only White unit we can get now is from e7xf6. So this means that the two Black units we can release must be B & R, so they can retreat to f8 & g8 respectively. The timing is very tight, and there is only one way to do it. The black rook must visit a6 to unwaylay wPa, which gives White 5 more tempi, just enough.

bPc promoted on b1 to R, so we would need to undo the cage to get that. Therefore all we can do is send wQg1, then Rf1-f2 f2-f3 etc. bPa must retract immediately tp a7, so that wPa when unwaylaid can make fully 4 unmoves. Black officers are arranged to give unique retro & forward play (although with minor dual for the try) with Sh8 not just retro dressing but ensuring unique retraction Tg8-c8 not Th8-c8.
A.Buchanan: Another surprising motivation for e.p. I love Sh8. Sorry for W3 dual in the try play else the stipulation could be h#4*. I can’t fix it but it’s hard to improve on MC. Very enjoyable (2021-10-23)
A.Buchanan: Non-standard material is where the diagram contains for a player more than 1 queen or bishop of a hue or more than 2 rooks or knights. Obtrusive material is standard material, but there is some cheap reason why the unit must be promoted, most commonly that a bishop's home square remains blockaded by pawns. These categories are disjoint: no piece is ever both. Many problems in PDB do not apply this consistently, but the distinction goes back a long way in chess problem history, and is discussed by Morse.
Honestly, I dislike the word "obtrusive" whose negativity (while perhaps valid in forward problems) is inappropriate for retros. One distinguished composer objected to this tag being assigned to one of his problems. Nevertheless the concept has some interest. Renaming is a perilous business, but I am looking for suggestions... :) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Another distinction that comes to mind between "non-standard material" and "obtrusive promotion" is that normally in the former, one can't immediately point to which of the non-standard pieces was promoted: it's just that there's too many; while for the latter, one can usually point to a specific unit immediately.
"Obvious" is a candidate replacement for "obtrusive", but this might commit a cardinal sin of trying to nail down a perfectly useful and inherently vague term. Both "obvious" & "obtrusive" begin with "ob" which is helpful. What do you think? (2021-10-24)
Henrik Juel: I am curious about the award; why did this problem with good forward play and excellent retro-play only obtain a Commendation?
Maybe the judge did not like that Lh3 obviously is obtrusive...
. (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Yes, and the lovely P0001117 with a similar obtrusion only received 12th Lob! But there may have been other factors. I do observe that "non-standard material" is arguably a worse defect than "obtrusive material", but the term doesn't cause offence because it's objective and non-judgemental. "obtrusive" is more subjective and inherently pejorative. To have such terms in the glossary is to put curators in an invidious position. I think the concept has its place, but I would like to replace it with something less scornful. I'm up for "obvious". It's an easy and reversible change: let's do it and see if mobs of protesters form outside the gate :) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Have changed "obtrusive material" to the non-pejorative "obvious promotion". It may still be regarded as a defect. As a placeholder, I have also changed the unclear German "mit Umwandlungfigur(en)" to "augenscheinlich Umwandlungfigur". A native German speaker I'm sure will propose a better term. (2021-10-26)
A.Buchanan: “offensichtlich” it is thanks Mario (2021-10-26)

Renny Bosch: This problem together with P0002238 and P0002243 form a lovely triad in each of which the rightmost three white pawns promote to a common target (Q's, R's, or B's) which subsequently get captured. Studying their similarities and differences, and what it took to make each one work, gives one a good appreciation of the art of SPG composition.

Henrik Juel: If Black may castle, his latest move must have been e3xf2, so last move was e2-e4. (Orig. wPg2 promoted on g8, so g7xh6 happened early). 1.dxe3 e.p. 2.fxg1=B 3.0-0 Tg4# (2003-03-21)
James Malcom: Is this the only know one-sided Valladao in a regular series-mover helpmate? Also, can wPh2 be shifted to h4, and the White king moved as well to h2, so that the solution must have 2. fxg1=S? (2020-12-08)
James Malcom: Well, the only known one that is in minimum form, i.e. 3 moves, I mean. (2020-12-08)
A.Buchanan: This is nice. I don't know of any other AP ser-h#3 with Valladao, but there could be. Just been cleansing PDB data today. Yes I think wKh3 and wBh2 can be transposed, and then promote to S instead of L. (2020-12-08)
A.Buchanan: The legality of intermediate positions in seriesmovers is of course irrelevant. However, each proof game that leads to the diagram position with BTM can be appended with a black move and then a "flip" that changes the player to move. We can repeat this process, and then the fact that Black retains castling rights implies that they had castling rights in the diagram position. I think this is the right formal way to handle AP with seriesmovers. (2022-03-21)

Richter H. Gruber "What a correction! Making the previously cooked R5 sound (hopefully), the author simultaneously improved it substantially : Instead of 'only' two, now we have three capture-free black circuits (Dd8, Ta8, Sb8). Everything is based on the need to capture sLc8, and it is achieved virtuously. It is not apparent that sTa8 and sSb8 have to move at all. This makes R5v clearly superior to a number of related tourney entries showing multiple switchbacks (cf. 3rd and 4th Hon. Men.). "
paul: Correction of P1000446 (2022-02-06)
Henrik Juel: There is a funny english error in the judge comment
He probably wanted to say that the author performed like a virtuoso, but wrote 'and it is achieved virtuously.', which has a completely different meaning (2022-02-06)

Castling is impossible because, if black can still castle, the diagram position is draw due to the 50-move rule!
White captures: axb, bxc, exf. Black captures: hxg, gxf, exd, dxc. Promotions: a1=T, b1=T, h8=X. The position can only be unblocked by unpromoting White piece on h8. This can only be wRb5. wK must go to c6 to unpin wR. The journey is via g3, h2, e1, b2, & a3.The 50 white moves are: 34 by wK (screens on c8 [with careful step on a2 to let bB pass] then g8), 11 by wB6 (to e3 to exchange place with bB then screen on a7), 3 by wR (promotion on h8), 2 by wBa4.

Note the natural notation of the Take&Make moves, far better than something like 3.bxa6[-wBa6,+wSa8], which should be written as 3.bxa6-a8=S (2021-10-23)
A.Buchanan: I will copy Gerd Wilts on your notation suggestion, which doesn't work quite now here but might be made to work - I agree it's superior. (2021-10-24)
Nightrider: What a pleasure to read this! I invented take&make, and I used the natural notation (like "bxa8-d8S") right from the beginning. Isn't it ideal if readers may understand the idea of a condition immediately by the notation of the moves?

By the way, the same holds for the (much more recent) condition make&take, where a move of a wSc3 that captures a bBg8 (for example) should be written analogously as S-f6xg8. Here again, does this natural notation not make clear on the spot what the basic idea of make&take is?

(And does it not look MUCH more elegant, for both conditions, if they are written in small letters exclusively and without blanks around "&" ? For me, it was always take&make and (years later) make&take. But, de gustibus non est disputandum...) (2021-10-24)
A.Buchanan: Hi Nightrider, thanks for kind words. I did email Gerd directly after the earlier post. He's pretty busy at the moment but in a few months thinks will have more time to deal with some items on the backlog.
For names, I agree that syntax varies. Sometimes it's down to taste, more often it's just random noise. There's also the question of "&" versus "and". (StrateGems uses both in one page!) In German, nouns are always capitalized, and the rest of PDB inherits that kind of uniformity, with the idea that PDB is just applying a local pattern, not trying to be authoritative in promoting a "canonical" way of writing each term. WinChloe has similar policy: Take & Make. YACPDB has Take&MakeChess. Search engines divide up words into atoms, so when I ask google for take&make I get "Take & Make" & "Take&Make" almost equally, so Google is blind to the distinct form that you prefer. Sorry.

\eb

[The judge was Thomas Volet]
Judge’s comments: What is a judge to do with a composition containing so many features valued by that judge? Enjoy it, of course! An elegant arid setting (without obtrusive force or King in check) conceals the depth of the retroplay. The precise timing represents the best exploitation of the Kislyak theme. In addition to his ever-present clarity of logic, Michel often gives us much humor in his compositions. Naturally the Bg8 is not the one that started on f1! The slant pawn on h2 shows Michel’s long memory for tournament stipulations, and thankfully, spares the audience from inventory tedium that we all experience but are reluctant to acknowledge. A fun composition, and what more can be asked? (2015-12-04)
Henrik Juel: The stipulated theme was

A.Buchanan: This problem and its antecedant are NOT cooked. They are non-unique proof games, and there is no intention of uniqueness. Whilst it's useful to identify a shortest solution, it is disrespectful and confusing to wave around the terms "C-" & "cooked". When we have verified that this problem has no solution in 18.0 or 18.5 moves, we can mark it as C+. (2023-09-02)
Olaf Jenkner: That's quiet confusing. See P0000404 with stipulation "BP in 45,0". The keyword is "Unique Proof Game".
This problem has the stipulation "BP in 19.5". The keyword is "Non-Unique Proof Game".
I don't believe that the dot makes the difference. (2023-09-03)
Henrik Juel: One way of limiting the confusion is to change the stipulation to
Length of shortest proof game?
C+ then means that this length is indeed 19.5 moves (2023-09-03)
A.Buchanan: A root problem is that animation engine reads the stipulation to decide what to do. (AND the details are undocumented.) So if we change the stipulation to something correct, we will lose the animation. Also, there is no Originalforderung field to keep track of the composer's intent. The comma dot is another linguistic challenge which could be addressed if we had multi-language support for stips like we do for source, composer, keyword & fairy piece. Obviously I'm very grateful for Gerd's work, but he has given no indication when, if ever, he will restart serious development work on PDB, so in the meantime we need to muddle through. In the meantime, the best we could do is rework the stipulation to add "(non-unique)" or "how many solutions?" etc. This edit can be done by screen-scraping in an automated way, if we can agree the principle (2023-09-03)

Would only this problem have been submitted, the tournament would have been a success! What a surprising (long) solution with two switchbacks of the white king after long marches. This is spectacular in a problem that resembles a series proof game. The problem demonstrates a perfect usage of the extra condition – with a good understanding of economy: It is not quantity that counts but quality! This is shown by the author’s remark “No other castling than the thematic one”. (2021-08-25)
In english, roughly:
In castling chess the kings (on any square) can 'castle' with any man
In this problem we have Ke1 and Dh4, after 'castling' Kg3 and Df2 (2021-08-25)
In this problem, the Stapff type is used: 22.Lxf5 is the only way White can continue after the check from the black knight, so he may capture (2021-08-25)

A.Buchanan: Welcome, Henrik. Any idea what his initial "C." stands for? I couldn't find it online. (2021-01-22)
Henrik Juel: Unfortunately not, Andrew
In those days the first name was almost always abbreviated to an initial
Christian was a very common first name, but this was usually abbreviated to Chr.
So a wild guess is Carl, but it really could be anything starting with C
In a Skakbladet issue he is referred to as Direktør Staugaard, but this just means that he was in charge of a company (2021-01-22)
A.Buchanan: I have posted an English definition of the keyword. Please check if it suits. (2021-01-22)
Henrik Juel: Searching for direktør staugaard, randers (a danish city) yields
Conrad Staugaard (1852-1922)
so this is my best bet
Conrad Staugaard headed a bank in Randers, founded by him in 1891, but the CV in
http://historiskranders.dk/randers-biografier/
does not mention anything about playing chess or chess problems
Chess playing was very common in the middle class, so the biographer may not have found it worth mentioning (2021-01-22)
Henrik Juel: Your keyword definition seems fine,
except for the spelling of showcase... (2021-01-22)
A.Buchanan: Haha bingo: "Staugaard was a well-known and excellent chess-player, one of the many traits he had in common with Lewis Carroll". MMA SAM - Tidsskrift.dk. Googling for "Conrad Staugaard skak" brings up the pdf for Rama Sama. Please tell us what you make of it, Henrik :) In the mean time, I have updated the author info for him (2021-01-22)
Henrik Juel: Very good, Andrew
Ah, the joys of Google...
In the danish text there is not only your citation on chess, but also one on chess problems
There are also examples of Conrad's excentric behaviour, in line with him inventing the looong castling
That C. Staugaard might be Conrad's younger brother Carl (who surely also knew about chess) is ruled out by the fact that Carl emigrated to South America in 1901, because he experienced disappointments in his love live... (2021-01-22)
A.Buchanan: Yes it said he had lots of amazing concepts. The idea about the banner for his nursemaid to take his children for walks without getting her arms stretched is very funny. This is our man. He also seems to have been a good man, and an effective businessman. And loved enough by his friends for a 120 page book to have been commissioned in his memory. He is reminiscent of other children’s authors like Edward Lear, Dr Seuss, Heinrich Hoffmann... I’m so happy that this problem has brought him back to our awareness (2021-01-23)

A.Buchanan: Thematic Ceriani-Frolkin seems a great way to conceal P-K castling! But normally wK returns to e1 in hidden castling. Absence of P-K in engine makes it harder to verify soundness of implausible moves like that. (2021-01-22)

Jean Marc Loustau: • Reciprocal change of 2nd white moves
• Keller theme in Set-Play
• 8th WCCT theme in the solution: must be noticed here that the black defences don’t capture a white unit; so there is a kind of paradox in the fact the moves Qd6 and Qb4 are more efficient after the black move (1… Sd5/Sc4), just when they don’t check. This feature seems to have not been taken into account by the judges (most of the problems of the tournament had capturing black moves, particularly those with reciprocal change of 2nd white moves) (2022-05-11)

Henrik Juel: Definition of the Royal Dynasty condition from Schwalbe
In this problem 10.h8=K makes both white kings non-royal, so 11.f4 is not an illegal self-check
The black king is royal throughout, so 5.exf8=KDTLS? would have given a disturbing check to him, leaving just 5.e8=B
It is nice that both conditions are invisible in the diagram, but they should be mentioned in the stipulation, I think (2021-08-30)
Henrik Juel: Euclide 1.01 reports no solutions in orthodox chess (2021-08-30)
Henrik Juel: in my first comment you should read 5.exf8=B, of course, not 5.e8=B (2021-08-30)
James Malcom: I forget to add the C+, and thank you for your comments. (2021-08-31)
Henrik Juel: Jacobi 0.7.5 in Heuristic Mode found the solution in 35 seconds
A full test required 917 seconds (2021-08-31)
Henrik Juel: Here is a way to use Jacobi:
1. Open the homepage https://wismuth.com/jacobi/latest/solver.html
2. Copy the following two lines to the rectangle for Text representation:
stipulation dia11.0 forsyth 1sb2r1q/1pppspp1/4k3/8/5Pr1/p7/PPP1P2P/RSBQKBSR
condition RoyalDynasty PromOnly P S B R Q K
3. Click on 'Set problem from text'
4. Click on Start (with Heuristic Mode marked, if you just want to find the solution)
5. When Jacobi ends, click on the solution to view it in the Game editor

James Malcom: For those who advocate N for knight, use "EnglishN" to avoid changing the FEN each time. (2021-08-31)
Henrik Juel: That sounds good, James
Exactly how do you do that? Where do you write EnglishN?
There is an output option called English-N, is that it?
Is there a similar trick to use in Popeye? (2021-08-31)
Henrik Juel: This works in Jacobi, but note the s in promonly
englishn
stipulation dia11.0 forsyth 1nb2r1q/1pppnpp1/4k3/8/5Pr1/p7/PPP1P2P/RNBQKBNR
cond RoyalDynasty PromOnly P s B R Q K
And what about Popeye? (2021-08-31)
James Malcom: Popeye is S only as far as I know. (2021-08-31)

PG in a) 7.0 b) 7.5

Engine shows orthodox solution in 7.5 and nothing shorter. Staugaard implies at least 7 White moves of which 2 are captures to promote on d8. So Black needs 7 moves. sL only released after W5 promotion, so last 3 Black moves are with bishop. If 7.0 moves exactly, then can use engine for first 5.0, which has unique solution. If 7.5, then White must lose a tempo. b2-b4 is too late, so must be with wK. But cannot triangulate via e4 or d4 because of checks. So no Staugaard castling in 7.5.
Henrik Juel: Part b) is an orthodox proof game, which is C+ Euclide 1.01
The solution is
1. Be2-e4 Bf7-f5 2. Be4-e5 Sg8-f6 3. Be5xf6 Ke8-f7
4. Bf6xe7 Kf7-f6 5. Be7-e8=T Lf8-a3 6. Ke1-e2 La3xb2
7. Ke2-d3 Lb2xa1 8. Te8-e2
In part a) you can save a white move by Staugaard castling
1.-5. as above, then 6. 0-0-0-0-0-0 Lxb2 7. Ke3-d3 Lxa1
Note that after this castling you cannot reach 7.5 moves by going Ke3-e4-d3 or Ke3-Kc4-d3, so part b) is also correct as a fairy proof game (2021-10-05)
Henrik Juel: Trying to waste a white move early in part b) also fails
1.e3? f5 2.e4 Sg6 3.e5 Kf7 4.exf6 Kf6??
because Black cannot make his 4th move (2021-10-05)
Henrik Juel: 2... Sg6 should be Sf6, of course (2021-10-05)
