A.Buchanan: Yes I like the letter idea, which can only work in German. Do you think this was intentionally a non-unique PG? Given the triumphs of the unique PG genre, such problems do not impress, but it wouldn't be "cooked". Or maybe we should classify all non-unique PGs here as cooked? What do you think? (2023-05-21)
Henrik Juel: Testing gives the result 'cooked'
This problem is correct in the sense that all shortest proof games last 17.0 moves
Still the current C+ is rather misleading
I suggest no label, neither C+ nor cooked (2023-05-21)
Olaf Jenkner: Machine translation is very poor as far as problem chess is concerned. (2023-05-23)
A.Buchanan: Hi Moldenhauser. Non-unique PGs are uncooked if 1) the move total is correct, (2) the intended theme appears in every shortest solution. For a problem like this where the theme is the final diagram, the second is vacuous. In 1986 some unique PGs were being already published, and I t can be difficult to discern the intention of the composer but I think this one was intended to be non-unique. I don’t think any non-unique PG can be classed as C+. (2023-05-23)

Mu-Tsun Tsai: This one is by far the toughest retro I've ever solved. Very little certain information can be determined by structural consideration alone, even with long and complicated argument. It took me five days to complete solving this. (2012-07-22)
A.Buchanan: @Mu-Tsun: that's an interesting data point - thanks for posting. (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: The current record is 58.5 moves in a proof game problem by the authors + Keym, Die Schwalbe 2017 (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: I just learned that the 58.5 move proof game has been cooked... (2017-09-07)
A.Buchanan: In retrospect, my earlier comment about "interesting data point" is a bit weak. It's actually great that for such an extreme problem, someone took substantial time to independently validate it. It's like doing science: people want to do their own new stuff, and are unwilling to take the time to validate what's already been claimed. This one has survived 30+ years, and maybe the use of constraints e.g. in Jacobi can eventually allow it to be HC+. (2021-05-29)
Olaf Jenkner: This problem is the current record, because P1338946 (58.5 moves) has been cooked. (2021-11-25)
Reto: This is C+ up to 51.0 moves with Stelvio 2.0. This ties the record for partial testing of an SPG. Took 1200 CPU hours of strategy seeking (finding 378 0+0 strategies) and another 13h of strategy playing these strategies. If this can ever be completely solved, then it needs to be the case that all strategies have 0+0 free moves, otherwise playing is utterly hopeless.
@Andrew: There is absolutely no way a brute-force based program like Jacobi ever stands a chance at solving something like this, no matter how many conditions you add. (2023-12-14)

Ld3-h7# Th1-h8 2. Lh8-g7 Tg1-h1 3. Se1-g3 g2-g1=T 4. Th7-h8=L scheitert allerdings an der Schlagbilanz.

Reto: This is now the new record for the longest computer tested SPG. Strategy seeking takes up all the time, playing the 800 strategies on the other hand is done within a few seconds. (2023-08-11)
Reto: With the upcoming v1.6, this is solved by Stelvio in around 20min. The improvement is due to the fact that the cage in the south-west is now detected (either the wRa1 is captured inside the cage or the wBc1 is captured at home) (2023-09-02)

Joaquim Crusats: Can anyone explain the intention? (2013-01-06)
Henrik Juel: The eight white pawns captured the four missing black officers and promoted on b8, d8, f8, and h8; the eight black pawns captured the four missing white officers and promoted on a1, c1, e1, and g1.
If White had the move, 1.Ta5+? Kxb4 2.Sc6+ Kc4 3.Tc5 would mate in three.
But Black has no last move, so he has the move and mates in three by 1... T3d2+ 2.Lexd2 Txd2+ 3.Kb1 Txc1# (2013-01-06)
A.Buchanan: This is one of a number of problems which had been given both "No legal last move for..." & "Whose move?" keywords. These should correspond respectively to two situations: (1) Codex Article 15 where we add or remove a single move from the beginning of the solutions, but the mating party remains the same. (2) A kind of one-sided duplex, where who moved last implies who delivers the mate (or other final move).
So at most one of the two keyword forms can ever logically apply to a problem. Therefore I have removed the incorrect "No legal last move for Black" keyword.
We might replace "Whose move?" by "Halfduplex", which is related to the Popeye option. What do you think? (2023-11-28)
A.Buchanan: This is a nice problem. There are some final move duals for the actual solution, but all missing units are needed to justify promotions (2023-11-28)
Henrik Juel: Halfduplex is a bit too technical for my taste, although it describes the goings on well (2023-11-28)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik - I'll leave the term "Whose move?" as it is then. (2023-11-28)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: WBd8 can be replaced with a BN after moving BPg7 to f7 and BPh5 to h6. (2018-08-08)
A.Buchanan: Yes after all these years, I found this a few months ago, but when I told Thomas Brand, he said that Werner Keym had found it - one of a series of modifications through seeking to avoid non-standard material. (2018-08-12)
Henrik Juel: Werner's improvement can be found in his 'Eigenartige Schachprobleme' from 2010, p.196, dia 1.68 (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: I thought it was more recent (2018-08-12)
A.Buchanan: In fact Werner was not trying to avoid non-standard material, but to prefer "cheaper" knights over bishops. But this is not the canonical ordering, which regards knights and bishops as equivalent. So the older record will win out in classical terms. (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: And non-standard material is no defect, according to the 1977 grading criteria, so old Theophilus reigns supreme (2019-10-04)
Henrik Juel: The further retroplay is
-1... h6 -2.a6 and e.g. -2... Ka7 -3.a5 Ta8 -4.Tb8 Ka6 -5.Kc8
and wK out via g6 (2019-10-04)
A.Buchanan: I don't know if a bishop is more expensive than a knight for these economy records. If modifying the criteria, I personally would prefer to minimize non-standard material. But more generally, how to handle a later version of economy record, with similar force? In some cases, the change is trivial, just transforming one unit which might as well be a dummy. At the other extreme, the matrix is completely different. In "Eigenartige Schachprobleme", Werner Keym stoically prefers the earlier record. Even the original composer(s) of a record problem are forbidden from making any artistic improvement to a published economy record! Over the years, the only change to the grading criteria is that Type C problem now needs to contain a check. Any old check-free Type C would a fortiori have been a Type B economy record at least. Here in PDB, I've tagged some cases of "ex-aequo" (search k='economy:eq') but I fear that Werner would not approve of this. What should we do? (2022-03-31)

Michel Caillaud: The original stipulation is #1 (durch wen?).
As wPe2 cannot be captured on its file, the 4 white captures for 4 Pawns to promote to Knights are (a2)xb3, (e2)xf3 and (f2)xg3 2 times, and wPb2 was captured on its file by (Dd8)xb6.
As b3-b2 (before (a2xb3)) and c7-c6 (before (Dd8)xb6) cannot be immediately retracted, only bK and wSs can play the last moves.
As indicated by Gerald, bK has to go to g8 to unlock the position, freeing bSg5.
When Ka3-a2 is retracted, previous white move places the 6 white Knights on black squares; the resulting Retro-Opposition implies that black is to play in the diagram position.

Henrik Juel: The intention may be 1.dxc3ep 2.Kxb5xc6-d7-e8 6.0-0 Rh8#, but -1.Kb2 seems possible. Should bBc1 be moved to a3? (2003-04-28)
GW: Yes, that's the solution, and the problem seems indeed to be cooked. I don't know if it has been corrected. (2003-04-28)
James Malcom: I believe that the intent was that the sLc1 must be the orginal one, and thus an impediment to wK foreplay, as the wBc6 "must" have captured the e7 Black pawn on its way from f2. The problem is that it can take the alternative path fxsLf3xDe3xTc5-c6, and there are enough White pieces to capture for the Black b pawn to make it d2 and for the d pawn to make it to c2. (2021-09-14)
James Malcom: It turns out this problem actually was corrected a long time later: P1012052 (2021-09-14)

Renny Bosch: This problem together with P0002238 and P0002243 form a lovely triad in each of which the rightmost three white pawns promote to a common target (Q's, R's, or B's) which subsequently get captured. Studying their similarities and differences, and what it took to make each one work, gives one a good appreciation of the art of SPG composition.

Zuge."
Cook: 1. Sxc7+!
1. Lxc7!
Innerhalb des 2. Teils einer Artikelserie "Die Konventionen im Problemschach" von Karl Fabel.
A.Buchanan: The retro logic is fine, but forward play is savagely cooked. I wonder about changing wSc8 to sS. The retro stuff still works OK, indeed sSc8 is a fourth thematic unit to retract in the try. Ignoring proof of ep legality, there is a unique #4 beginning with ep, and no #5. Promising: but when can we interpolate w000? Any solution must begin 1. axb6ep+ Kb5. There are now numerous #4, but none include w000, so I think we must stick with the still unique line beginning 2. Dxc8 thr 3. 0-0-0. There are 3 black defenses to refute this. 2. ... Txb6,axb3,d5. So maybe #6 needed for White to prevail? (2022-03-28)
A.Buchanan: But if we shift to #6 then 1. Sxc7!,Qxc8+! mate without ep. Can anyone retrieve the original diagram for this one, please? (2022-03-28)
Mario Richter: The position here is identical to the original diagram, but it should be regarded more as a schematic example than a "real problem". Fabel in his quote above: "... perhaps the problem is still not correct, but it should be easy to improve it ..." (2022-03-28)
Henrik Juel: unfortunately K. Fabel forgot to give the easy correction... (2022-03-28)
A.Buchanan: Thanks for this. Valery Liskovetz, an AP expert, was kind enough to send a pdf of the relevant Problem issue, so I can confirm. It's easy enough to remove the two cooks (e.g. sTc8) but the difficulty is in validation of the intended solution. Is there any "exact" option in Popeye that forces the solution to include a waiting move? The actual solution might be expected to be included in that set. (2022-03-29)
Henrik Juel: Yes, Andrew
'stip exact-#5' would disregard #4 as a solution, I believe (2022-03-29)
A.Buchanan: Even with the "exact", it's still very complicated to investigate. I think this kind of problem requires an engine feature to disallow any mate or pat if the specified castling has not been executed. Gazing at the 20,000 lines of output, I don't think sTc8 works as 1. axb6ep+ Kb5 2. Qb7 bxa3! threatens axb2+ after castling. I wonder if the board might be flipped left-right except for wK, but I haven't explored this. (2022-05-31)

James Malcom: I don’t believe that the great Fabel, with his keen eye, would have not seen such a simply cook as the taking of Black’s c5 pawn. I suspect that a Black bishop was on d4 but was forgotten placing the problem in the database, or it was a misprint. I am changing this problem to not cooked for now. However, someone should check the original source in the event I am wrong, which is always a possibility. (2020-03-15)
Mario Richter: Hi, James, there's indeed a black bishop on d4. Original stipluation: "h#48 (nicht exakt!)"

Joost de Heer: Stupid question, but won't moving Bh3 to g4 add another halfmove? (2023-01-30)
Henrik Juel: Yes, Joost, but this would make the solution even less exact
0... Lf3,Lh3,Lh5 1.g4 Lxg4 etc. (2023-01-30)
Joost de Heer: @Henrik: So? This is an attempt at a non-unique (exact is something else) h# length record, the level of non-uniqueness is irrelevant. And as James pointed out, adding Kg4-f4 will add yet another move.
Only possible cooks are when white starts with 1... Bh5 2. g4 Be8 (so not capturing Pg4) but I don't see how that could lead to a quicker mate. (2023-01-31)
James Malcom: I double-checked that myself, Joost, and found that going around for wPg2 actually takes far longer, which would be required any PxB action to take place, but that takes far longer than the normal solution. I know Olaf's Gustav would check, since it C+ the h#111. (2023-01-31)

Castling is impossible because, if black can still castle, the diagram position is draw due to the 50-move rule!
White captures: axb, bxc, exf. Black captures: hxg, gxf, exd, dxc. Promotions: a1=T, b1=T, h8=X. The position can only be unblocked by unpromoting White piece on h8. This can only be wRb5. wK must go to c6 to unpin wR. The journey is via g3, h2, e1, b2, & a3.The 50 white moves are: 34 by wK (screens on c8 [with careful step on a2 to let bB pass] then g8), 11 by wB6 (to e3 to exchange place with bB then screen on a7), 3 by wR (promotion on h8), 2 by wBa4.

paul: Theme Valladao (2013-09-12)
James Malcom: An excellent Valladao with a castling paradox and Anti-Pronkin! (2021-01-23)
A.Buchanan: Normally, castling paradox would employ *both* K&R heading back home after the dalliance. There's non-standard material which to me seems a defect in a Valladao. No-one here was able to agree on what Anti-Pronkin is, so the term has been retired. I guess it covers everything which is not a Pronkin: from Allumwandlung to Zilahi :-) (2021-05-19)
Michel Caillaud: Anti-Pronkin (from FIDE Album "Theme definitions") :
A promoted piece is captured. The corresponding piece of the same colour from the game-array moves onto the promotion-square.
So 1) it doesn't cover everything which is not a Pronkin 2) it is not present in this problem (2021-05-21)
A.Buchanan: I was confusing the term with "Anti-Phoenix" oops.
As Michel says, this problem does *not* show Anti-Pronkin as per Michel's FIDE definition. The promoted piece is never captured.
The "Pronkin" theme in the V&V Encyclopaedia wisely does not requires that the original unit is captured. There has to be some credit for a unit reaching a thematic target square at all, irrespective of the fate of the unit. In the current problem, we could still imagine a Prenix after Lc1 for example to regularize the material: why couldn't that still class as Anti-Pronkin?
Unit quests & regularization of material should be keyworded separately. And there should be a proper symmetry between Pronkin & Anti-Pronkin themes, imho. (2021-07-31)

James Malcom: It is very suprising that such a long proof game can be C+. Is this the longest proven, orthodox PG? (2021-03-10)
A.Buchanan: “Consecutive promotions” indicates that the promotions have a thematic “nearness” in the sequence of game moves (or perhaps that the order is significant - but I think a new keyword like “ordered promotions” would be better for that?) These are actually uncommon objectives, and are certainly not goals in this composition as far as I can see. Just “promotion” with a shopping list of the promotions which took place avoids extra keying, redundancy, errors and inflexibility. I wish that everyone can develop a joy in accurate naming, and a unwillingness to settle for slipshod language. Thanks (2021-03-11)
Henrik Juel: Yes, James, this may well be the longest C+ PG
I tried to test it with Euclide 1.01
Strategy 1 turned out to be successful, and the intended solution was found in an hour
Strategy 2 turned out not to provide a solution, and I terminated the program after some 12 hours, while it was searching for strategy 3 (which may not exist) (2021-03-11)
ras@bsiag.com: I just tried this with my own solving program (still wip though, not to be trusted yet). Finds unique solution in 6sec. Surprising. (2022-08-02)

Automatische Zugfolge (No-brainer)
PS 23 November: Some readers wondered (I did, too) whether the position of the 10-move no-brainer is legal. It is, says Elkies: "One pawn capture on a side yields three promotable pawns (a6xb7 and c3xd2, with White promoting bbc and Black add); and two piece captures on a side give four more promoting pawns (e6xf7, g6xh7, promote ffhh; f3xe2, h3xg2, promote eegg)."
Henrik Juel: The position is indeed legal, but Noam's explanation of seven white and seven black promotions might be clarified
By 'pawn capture' he means PxP, and by 'piece capture' he means that an officer is captured by a pawn
e6xLf7 and g6xLh7 are not both possible here, as the two missing black officers have different square colors, but the latter capture could be g5xLh6 after Black has played Ph7-h5 (2018-11-02)

Pairs of repeated diagrams marked (*)
Nikolai Beluhov: Throughout the game, three different positions had to be repeated two times each (with the other side on the move) in order for the position to be formed.
The theme of loss-of-tempo-motivated position repetition was deeply explored by Luigi Ceriani (1894-1969) and is present in many of his works, including numerous ortho-reconstructions.
I only know of two twofold implementations: P1183992 by Ceriani himself (possibly a version by N. Plaksin or A. Kuznetsov of P0002948) and P0005418 by S. Volobuev (with a "#1" stipulation which determines the side to move in the diagram position). D. Baibikov's problem presents the first ever threefold implementation. (2011-01-02)
A.Buchanan: “fake game array” (FPI) is another special case of Ceriani’s player inversion (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: This is a wonderful problem. The repeated diagrams are where wDb8 & sLb7. There are sequences e.g. n. Db8~ Lb7-c8 (*) n+1. Dd8-b8 La8-b7 n+2. Dc8-d8 Lb7-a8 n+3. Db8-c8 (*) La8-b7. Need to ensure that over this sL shifts from c8 to a8, otherwise there are unnecessary additional repeated diagrams. Have fixed the solution given above. (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: “Position” is diagram + the move + castling rights + e.p. status. What is repeated is a diagram. Given that the stipulation was in Russian originally, I dare to change the stipulation here... (2021-02-25)

Non-standard rather than obtrusive force. Obtrusive implies accidental (e.g. wLa8 bBb7). Here those wS are thematic

A.Buchanan: In what sense are the two promotions “konsekutive”? (2021-02-24)
James Malcom: Andrew, it's much less a keyword for consecutive promotions as it is a catch-all for all problems with 2 promotions in them. (2021-02-24)
Olaf Jenkner: "konsekutive" means one promotion after the other, not two promotions in two variations.
Of course in helpmate this doesn't make much sense. (2021-02-24)
A.Buchanan: Hi thanks for this. Let's take a step back. I counted *85* non-fairy keywords which refer to promotion or umwandlung in either name or description! There must be other relevant ones with no descriptions today. A keyword has no value to us until it is accurately populated (a small percentage of false positives and negatives). And it requires substantial work to populate. There is also a lot of overlaps and gaps still, which are harder to distinguish because of the number of keywords and the vagueness of both their intended descriptions and usage. I also want to make as precise as possible keyword definitions and to align with actual usage, so that they can be populated automatically by PDB as easily as possible, and so that different curators can populate data harmoniously. So less is more, and then we can fill any gaps that remain. The data doesn't have to be perfect right off, but we should have a path for convergence over time.

"Promotion" can be the catch-all vanilla keyword to track promotions where the promoted officer can be identified, e.g. promotion(Sd) or promotion(x2 Sd). Separate different phases by comma, as usual. “Consecutive promotions” can then return to its intended usage as a thematic keyword identifying a run of promotions as close together as possible. The count shifts to the parameter field rather than part of the keyword itself e.g. not “consecutive promotions 4(stst)" but “consecutive promotion(x4 sstt)”, to reduce the over-supply of keywords, and to allow more selective filtering. Comments welcome. (2021-02-26)

Judge's comment [Kostas Prentos]: "This is not the first quadruple Pronkin in a proof game; Nicolas has published a few, already. It is the first time that one of the four thematic pieces, the wQ, is captured at home, and is replaced by a new Pronkin Queen. The promoted black Bishops are an effective, but unpleasant alternative to the standard method of doubled pawns that usually come with this theme. In this case, the capture on d1 is thematic, and that on a1, forgivable, considering that it takes 5 moves to reestablish the Rook on a1. On the plus side, all the surviving white army has resumed the initial position."

„Vier weiße Damen, das ist starker Tobak, auch wie sie mit dem schwarzen König auf dem Parkett herumspringen. Die Echo-Epaulettenmatts mit Funktionswechsel der weißen Damen auf c7 und d6 als Block und Selbstmatterzwinger sind witzig. Schade, dass die weiße Dame auf h8 in den Mattbildern unbeteiligt herumsteht“ (Stephen Rothwell).
