Henrik Juel: The position can be reached in 18.0 moves: the first 3.0 as above, then Black plays as above, while White plays f3 and 14 tempo-moves like Sh3-g1.
Changing the stipulation to 'Proof game in exactly 18.5 moves' may rectify the situation.
The intended White play is very nice: Roundtrip by Ke1, needed by the triangulation on e3-f4-f3-e3, and roundtrip by Sg1, which screens on d4. (2011-03-14)
A.Buchanan: The preferred trick in such situations is to add an extra half move. So I'd try 19. ... Lg8: is that sound? (2017-09-14)
Henrik Juel: I tried to test 19... Lg8, but Euclide was too slow (2017-09-14)
Mario Richter: rawbats say that appending 19. ... Lg8 allows many alternative solutions, e.g. 1. c3 h5 2. Da4 h4 3. Dc6 dxc6 4. f3 Lf5 5. Sa3 Lh7 6. Tb1 Dd4 7. Ta1 Da4 8. Tb1 e6 9. Ta1 Se7 10. Kf2 Sg6 11. Ke3 Lc5+ 12. Kd3 Ke7 13. Sc4 Td8+ 14. Ke4 Td4+ 15. Ke3 Sd7 16. Sa3 Th8 17. Sb1 Lg8 18. Kf2 Th5 19. Ke1 Sh8
rawbats also says that Henrik's suggestion of changing the stipulation to 'Proof game in exactly 18.5 moves' will make the problem correct. (2017-09-18)
Mario Richter: I forgot: ... but since "loss of tempo" is the theme of the problem, this change of stipulation is IMHO not an option here. (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Mario, and I agree with you about the aesthetics of change. After posting my Lg8 suggestion, I did regret it because it's doubly suspicious. Firstly, the bishop can sneak past bRh8; secondly it takes the bishop's eye off d3 & c2. A more serious guess is to replace the last black moves by 16... Rh6 17... Sf8 18... Rf6 19... g6. This might fail for what in my head I call the "jigsaw" reason: that the known sub-chains of moves no longer mesh together in a unique way, but I don't think it fails for any other reason. Prove me wrong, stout rawbats! :D (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Sorry Henrik I should also have said thank you for trying to validate my dumb earlier suggestion :-) (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Typo, I meant: 16... Rh6 17... *Sh8* 18... Rf6 19... g6 sorry :( (2017-09-18)
Mario Richter: with the last black moves changed to 16... Rh6 17... Sh8 18... Rf6 19... g6 (final pos: 7n/pppnkp2/2p1prp1/2b2b2/q2r3p/2P2P2/PP1PP1PP/RNB1KBNR) rawbats thinks the problem is correct (2017-09-18)
A.Buchanan: Thank you, Mario. Obviously the composer could easily have fixed this if he was aware of the concern. His KS round trips are fantastically meandering, and the precise W&B play are very interdependent. I am amazed that there is only one composition in PDB by this top level composer, so I've found another to post quickly. He has a website http://open.mixi.jp/user/10857363/diary, with lots of erudite commentary in Japanese on top Western retros. Thank you, google translate! (2017-09-18)

Judge Tadashi Wakashima
Preliminary award 08/2021 = final award 09/2021
Jean Marc Loustau: Here is the complete solution:
1.NAf4? [threatens 2.VAxf6# A, 2.Qg4# B, 2.Qxg5# C] But1…PAxf4+!

1.NA6~? [2.VAxf6# A]
1…c3 x 2.Qg4# B
1…VAcb2 2.Qxg5# C
1…b6 y 2.Sg2# D
But 1…PAe5!

(1.NAc5!? [threatens 2.VAxf6# A] White Correction (1…PAe5 impossible) But1…VAcb2! (2.Qxg5??))

1.NAd4!? [threatens 2.Dg4# B] Threat Correction: 2.VAxf6?? VAxf6!
1…c3 x 2.VAxf6# A changed (Le Grand)
1…VAxh1 2.Sg2# D transferred (1…Sg3, Sxe3 2.Qg3#)
But 1…PAg7! q

1.NA3~? [threatens 2.Qxg5# C]
1…b5 z 2.Sg2# D transferred again
1…PAbb5 2.Qg4# B transferred (echo with the previous variation 1…VAcb2 2.Qxg5#)
(1…Se3, Sd2, Sg3 2.Qg3#)
But 1…VAe5! (echo with the previous refutation 1…PAe5)

(1.NAxa5!? [threatens 2.Qxg5# C] White Correction (1…VAe5?? 2.Qxg5#) But 1…Rxa5!)

1.NAd5!! [threatens 2.Sg2# D] Threat Correction: 2.Qxg5?? PAxg5!
1…b5 z 2.Qxg5# C transferred and changed (Le Grand)
1…b6 y 2.VAxf6# A transferred and changed (Le Grand)
1…PAb2 2.Qg4# B transferred again
1…PAg7 q 2.Sf3#
1…Se3 2.Qg3#

Another interesting try is:
1.Qg2? [2.Qxh3#] 1…PAb3 2.Qg4# B transferred, 1…VAxg2 2.Sxg2# D transferred; but 1…PAxh5!

• 2 Complete threat corrections combined with 2 Le Grand themes (A-B/B-A and C-D/D-C)
• All in all, 3 Le Grand themes (A-D/D-A to be added to the 2 previous ones)
• All in all 3 4-fold cyclical pseudo-Le Grand patterns: A-C/C-D/D-B/B-A, A-C/C-B/B-D/D-A, and A-D/D-C/C-B/B-A (also 5 3-fold cyclical pseudo-Le Grand patterns)
• Incidentally, Barnes theme (NAf4/NA6~, NAd4, NA3~), Rudenko theme (NAf4/NAd5) and 2 regular White Corrections (NAc5/NAxa5); Chinese Anti-Grimshaw on e5 (VAa1/PAa5)
• The 2 threat corrections with different threats are linked by transferred mates; the secondary threat of a correction occurs as a variation mate in the primary try of the other correction: this feature seems to be not common (with 4 different threats)
• All in all 7 transferred mates (including the non-thematic try 1.Qg2?)
• Caprice effects, Diagonal/Orthogonal correspondence, no white Pawn, and long lines matrix. (2022-05-02)

James Malcom: Thank you Henrik.

Strange, this usually never happens to me. This is indeed the position I sent. Yet I know I tested for Txc5. I made a mistake, but I forget how. In any case, Td5-d7 seems to fix the issue? (2022-10-09)
msterkowiec: Yes, in position #16 kB1N4/2PR4/8/2p1P2n/2P1P1R1/bBK2p2/pp1Ppppp/n4Q2 John Galt 4.6 finds no other solution but 1.c8Q.

BTW: here you can find a link to it: http://szachowe.pl/viewtopic.php?f=18&p=118120&sid=6e44d27ffcffe4cf867c23001ab11773#p118120

I write to be super fast and I believe it can save quite much time of chess composers...
(It's not a popular piece of software and Windows pops out quite many warnings about it, anyway it's enough to trust your antivirus) (2022-10-12)
Olaf Jenkner: The position Td7 is C+ (Gustav 4.2 b)
There are three full length variations. (2022-10-13)
