Mu-Tsun Tsai: This one is by far the toughest retro I've ever solved. Very little certain information can be determined by structural consideration alone, even with long and complicated argument. It took me five days to complete solving this. (2012-07-22)
A.Buchanan: @Mu-Tsun: that's an interesting data point - thanks for posting. (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: The current record is 58.5 moves in a proof game problem by the authors + Keym, Die Schwalbe 2017 (2017-09-07)
Henrik Juel: I just learned that the 58.5 move proof game has been cooked... (2017-09-07)
A.Buchanan: In retrospect, my earlier comment about "interesting data point" is a bit weak. It's actually great that for such an extreme problem, someone took substantial time to independently validate it. It's like doing science: people want to do their own new stuff, and are unwilling to take the time to validate what's already been claimed. This one has survived 30+ years, and maybe the use of constraints e.g. in Jacobi can eventually allow it to be HC+. (2021-05-29)
Olaf Jenkner: This problem is the current record, because P1338946 (58.5 moves) has been cooked. (2021-11-25)
Reto: This is C+ up to 51.0 moves with Stelvio 2.0. This ties the record for partial testing of an SPG. Took 1200 CPU hours of strategy seeking (finding 378 0+0 strategies) and another 13h of strategy playing these strategies. If this can ever be completely solved, then it needs to be the case that all strategies have 0+0 free moves, otherwise playing is utterly hopeless.
@Andrew: There is absolutely no way a brute-force based program like Jacobi ever stands a chance at solving something like this, no matter how many conditions you add. (2023-12-14)

Text stipulation that PDB move engine can't understand: "RV. Weiß am Zug macht im 3. Zug Remis mit Hilfe von Schwarz."
Henrik Juel: Black pawns captured all missing white men by a7xb6xc5xd4xe3 and h2xg1=L; White captured [Lc8, Lf8] with officers and a2xb3, e2xd3, f2xe3xd4 (after Black played e3-e2), and h2xg3.
If last move was Ka2-a1, the play presumably is 1.Kc2 Ka2 2.Kc3 Ka1 3.Kc2;
if last move was Kb1-a1, the play presumably is 1.Kb3 Kb1 2.Kc3 Ka1 3.Kb3.
But where are the three-fold repetitions justifying remis? Last white move could be e3xd4. (2012-02-18)
Mario Richter: Genesis of the position:
bBa3 is bPh7 which promoted on g1 by Ph2xg1=B.
White pawn captures: Ph2xg3, Pf2xe3xd4, Pe2xd3, Pa2xb3
Black pawn captures: Pa7xb6xc5xd4xe3, Ph2xg1
Therefore Henrik's suggestion wPe3xd4 is illegal, since then the bB has no chance to reach g1. (2012-02-22)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Mario; this probably gives rise to three-fold repetition. (2012-02-22)

Henrik Juel: It is illegal for Black to supplement anything on b6, because [Ta8] was captured in its corner and the other missing black men were captured by white pawns (2016-03-28)
Henrik Juel: ... as wLb3 is a pawn promoted on e8 or g8
Nice type Høeg defensive retractor
Here are some other explanatory comments
In retraction 1 White chooses to move his king back to h3; Black could choose to supplement a black man on g3 (or nothing), but supplementing a pawn is the only way to maintain legality (Kh3 stands in double check from Lc8 and Dh8); again moving Pg3 back to h3 and White supplementing a pawn on g4 is forced (this e.p. case is the only one where the supplementing does no happen on the abandoned square)
In retraction 2 the white retraction is forced, and then moving Kd6 back to d7 to uncheck is illegal because of the double check from Sb6 and Pc6, so Black must uncheck by moving Kd6 back to e6 and White choose to supplement a pawn on the abandoned square
In retraction 3 White chooses to move Pd6 back to e5, forcing another e.p. situation (2023-04-08)
Henrik Juel: The Proca type is easy to define: White and Black alternate retractions, until White can mate with a forward move
The Høeg type is usually defined the same way, except that the other side decides which man (if any) was captured; but this can be detailed as follows:
1. White chooses a man and 'moves it back'
2. Black chooses which man (if any) to 'supplement' on the abandoned square
(only now is the white retraction complete)
3. Black chooses a man and 'moves it back'
4. White chooses which man (if any) to 'supplement' on the abandoned square
(only now is the black retraction complete)
etc. etc. until, following a white retraction, White can mate with a forward move
In tries, Black can ruin the white plan by mating White with a forward move after a black retraction
It goes without saying that the resulting retractions must be legal
'supplement' is my (poor) translation of the danish term 'supplere'; maybe 'add' would be better
'the abandoned square' needs a special interpretation in the e.p. case, which happens twice in this problem
These details may be the cause why new type Høeg defensive retractors are rarely seen, as type Proca is more natural and straightforward (2023-04-08)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik. Yesterday, I went through all the defensive retractors to clear up keywords & genres. There were a very few where the stip did not specify the VRZ Type, and others where Anticirce did not specify Calvet vs Cheylan. The answers are probably obvious to you, and if you want to comment on those, then I will update the stips & keywords.
A more general question: Typ Friedlich appears to be the German for Type Pacific: can we standardize on one? (2023-04-08)
Henrik Juel: Thanks Andrew for enabling me to post my type Høeg spiel once again
Anticirce without specification usually means that both Calvet and Cheylan work
Friedlich is indeed german for Pacific, and as the PDB is a german product, I guess we must live with the present conditions (2023-04-08)

Henrik Juel: Yes, probably
I know that 'Jan Robert Mortensen' is identical to 'Jan Mortensen'; he never used his middle name (2017-03-08)
A.Buchanan: It’s possible to put the middle name into the “addition” field in the author table, rather than have two names in the “first name” field. Then in overview list the middle name won’t appear, but it will still appear above each composition as here. Curiously the addition field is common across all four languages (German, English, French, Unicode) supported by the author table. There is no comment field to allow for random extra info to be stored, unlike the source table. So if we drop Robert, we lose it completely. (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the info, Andrew
I guess we will have to live with it
For Jan, there is really no risk of confusion
But for Knud Hannemann (son of the less illustrious composer Harald Hannemann) it is annoying to see him cast as Knud Harald Hannemann, just because it was a custom in his family that the sons were given the father's first name
They still use this custom in Russia, but with 'son of' added, e.g., Vladimir Vladimirovitch Putin (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: A chess problem example is Nikita Michaelovitch Plaksin
But the rendering of his name in the PBD also gives an obvious partial solution to my problem
Change the middle name of the two danish composers to the corresponding initial:
Jan R. Mortensen and Knud H. Hannemann (2022-03-31)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the 'initialization', Andrew (2022-03-31)
A.Buchanan: OK fixed those, Henrik. HBae's original question concerned "Klaus Peter Kahl" vs "Peter Kahl". The former only has 2 problems here, and "both" collaborated with Jan Mortensen, so surely this is one person? (2022-03-31)
A.Buchanan: Kahls unified (2022-04-01)
Henrik Juel: I hear no protests from Osterholz-Scharmbeck, so that seems fine (2022-04-01)

Renny Bosch: This problem together with P0002238 and P0002243 form a lovely triad in each of which the rightmost three white pawns promote to a common target (Q's, R's, or B's) which subsequently get captured. Studying their similarities and differences, and what it took to make each one work, gives one a good appreciation of the art of SPG composition.

Henrik Juel: The content is concealed pawn captures
Despite no visible captures White captured a2xPb3xTa4 to open the a-line for [Ta1,Pa7], and h2xTg3xLh4 with black h7xLg6xDh5 to open the h-line for [Th1,Th8]
This makes life difficult for the human solver and for Natch 3.1, who tested the first 15.0 moves correct in 40 sec.
Testing the entire proof game would need more than a couple of hours by Natch (2018-12-08)

Die (Loydsche) englische Version der Forderung zielt nicht auf Eindeutigkeit ab: "Find how a stalemate might result in ten moves."

in 'Ruy Lopez' abgedruckt in der Rubrik "Partidas de fantasia"
AB: Not quite unique alas. 4 Dxc7 & 5 h4 can be transposed. (2001-10-17)
Kostas Prentos: Besides the minor transposition, there's another totally different solution:
1.c4 d5 2.Db3 Lf5 3.Dxb7 h5 4.Dxa7 Lh7 5.Dxb8 Ta6 6.h4 Th6 7.Dxc7 f6 8.Dxd8+ Kf7 9.Dxd5+ Kg6 10.De6= with many duals, too (2002-07-03)
AB: Yes, I was referring to uniqueness of proof game to reach the diagram position. KP responds to the task which appears here as the stipulation. (2002-07-07)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: What is the most simple stipulation that makes the solution unique?

My candidate: "Shortest game ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move"

I would add the length of the composer's solution as a courtesy to solvers: "Game in less than 10.0 moves ending in Stalemate, given that White has not moved a Pawn after his fourth move" (2012-08-27)
A.Buchanan: Hi YBZ: the proof game that Kostas gave 5bnr/4p1pb/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR has 12 solutions. 1.c3 gives another 12 solutions. And there's 2 solutions for Loyd. Out of these 26 indeed only one has the property that Wh gets all pawn moves out of the way before 4th move. But it's just occurred to me that there's a variant of Loyd which begins 1.c3 and wQ develops via a4 & a5, ending with 5bnr/4p1pq/4Qpkr/7p/7P/2P5/PP1PPPP1/RNB1KBNR this has 15 solutions, and in 6 of these, Wh plays both pawn moves as moves 1 or 2. Similarly if 1.c4. This only differs from Prentos' solution in the occupant of h7. So the suggested stipulation alas wouldn't work. I am pretty sure i have seen a longer version which is sound as a PG. (2020-05-28)
A.Buchanan: See P1004131 for a longer sound PG. (2020-05-28)
Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cook noted above means that a more elaborate secondary condition is needed. My suggestion:
"PG that is shortest to end in Stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and White plays 2 consecutive captures that are each longer than 2 squares".
An alternative is to accept the transposition:
"PG that is shortest to end in stalemate (less than 10.0 moves) and wPc2 does not move, 2 variants". (2020-06-07)
A.Buchanan: Is it known that there are no h=n.5 (or h=n half-duplex) from the game array for n9? (2022-07-13)
A.Buchanan: I read Loyd’s stipulation more as a hard task for composers than a fair ask of solvers. Loyd was a genius so of course he came up with a great answer. Adding a latter-day secondary condition to give an arbitrary uniqueness is no help to solvers, and has an aesthetic price. I imagine that Loyd’s withering reaction - as he generally favoured conceptual elegance over rigorous dual elimination. Non-unique PGs are a bit old-fashioned, but they still have their place and James Malcom proves a master at their efficient construction. I wish that YBZ was still with us to possibly contest my point, RIP. (2022-07-13)

If all three castlings are legal, then the ep is on. So evidence must be accumulated from the two solutions. White 0-0 serves only in this retro role, eliminating 26 other candidate solutions.
A.Buchanan: There was a diagram error here. It should be bPd7 not bPe7. The existing diagram is vastly cooked with e.g. 1. Ke8 Kd1 2. Te8 Lb6#. WinChloe has the correct diagram here. (2022-05-24)

Whether Sb1 is White or Black, there are only the same two forward solutions, one with White Castling the other with Black. So it must be retro concerns that eliminate one solution in each case. bRa1 is original in any case, as Black has 8 pawns.
a) Suppose White can castle, then bRa1 must have come via cross-capturing White pawns. But Black has only lost 2 units. So White can't castle.
b) Suppose Black can castle, then bRa1 must have escaped its home by cross-capturing. But White has lost only 5 units. So Black can't castle.
This is not PRA. Rather, it shows twinned RS.
VL: Nothing to do with Retro Strategy (nor with PRA). One definite castling is legal in every case. (2021-02-09)

A.Buchanan: @Bernd: I made the change you suggested, but having seen the result I think the original diagram was wrong, not the solution. In the diagram with just wKh1, sLc5 & one wB , the wB should be on d2 (or f2) not e2, in order to eliminate a cook. Otherwise, the final pawn can be on d2 or f2: both are ICs. (2020-12-17)
Henrik Juel: Andrew, the final pawn must be on d2, not f2
Without wPd2 last move could be Td8-d1+, so this position is no IC (2020-12-17)
A.Buchanan: Oh yes of course thanks. So what cooks does showing wBe2 in the diagram prevent? (2020-12-17)
Henrik Juel: I was asking myself the same question, Andrew
But there are so many IC's around that it is unadvisable to move Pe2 from the diagram to the stipulation list
We should have asked Hans, some 40 years ago... (2020-12-17)

Keine Lösung: BP 19.5. (2024-03-24)
A.Buchanan: Please forgive me for being stubborn, but I don't think just checking BP20.0 & BP19.5 is sufficient for C+. The test must include BP19.0 & BP18.5, and these should be very quick to test compared to the first two. They can be done first, which would allow for some short cooks to be identified more quickly. Maybe Stelvio could offer an option for this "fourfold" test, to save on typing, which is the main inconvenience? (2024-03-25)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Moldenhauer. Yes, Reto responded today to say: "Actually 20 and 19.5 are sufficient, Stelvio always checks for any solutions of same parity, so 20 includes 19, 18, ... and 19.5 includes 18.5, 17.5... I can see your point with adding an option for automatic double checking, I've added it to my list."
That's great, so in my opinion the PDB C+ report needs to indicate that Stelvio has also tested for the shorter solutions of the same parity, as this is tool-dependent behaviour which future readers might not know. Ideally this statement would appear at the end of the Stelvio output, as a kind of "certificate" that could be copied to PDB.
A problem with this whole issue is that there are different choices being made by different people. It complicates things unnecessarily. I think C+ for a PG should mean that the three shorter lengths have also been explored. This should be doable without getting into the fraught question of whether a shorter solution cooks a PG, although in my opinion it does, whatever the parity: a PG is just a diagram. Conceptually to me, PG in x.y is just SPG, with a courtesy hint to the solver of what length they are looking for. (2024-03-26)

Welches war der letzte Zug?
Kamikaze

A.Buchanan: Last move sure, but prior to that could be Kg1-h2, Kh1-h2 or even Kg1xTh2. wSa1 needs to be present so it wasn’t uncaptured on h2, but I think it can replace wLb2, which cannot I think be uncaptured on h2. Am I missing sth? (2022-07-15)
Mario Richter: Does the Kamikaze-rule only apply to Black's moves? Otherwise, how can the diagram position be reached from the initial game array?
If Kamikaze applies to White too, I think, wSa1 also prevents Tg1xSh1[-wTh1] as an alternative last move ... (2022-07-15)
A.Buchanan: Hi Mario: thanks for this. Kamikaze applies to both sides. By default it’s Rex exclusive so kings can go round mopping up odd pieces. Black used three of Pacg BQSS to capture wBRR inside the cage. I now see wSSBQ must remain on the board of else there may just have been a capture outside the cage. If there was just a Kamikaze capture inside the cage, it can only have been Q&R or S&R (or vice versa). e.g. bSf3xRg1(-bSg1). Since a1 is occupied, can’t get bK past wR to retract via b2.
2. Aufsplitten in zwei separate Aufgaben.
Was wird gewünscht/präferiert? (2015-03-14)
Henrik Juel: I prefer your second option, Mario (2015-03-14)
Alfred Pfeiffer: Diagramm (als Zeroposition) und Forderung so klarer? (2015-03-15)
Olaf Jenkner: So gefällt es mir. (2015-03-15)
A.Buchanan: In the zero diagram, one might also put in a line between ranks 4 & 5. This separator is used in PDB for grid chess etc, but could be helpful here. What do you think? (2020-11-11)
Olaf Jenkner: If I was asked, good idea.
Maybe there's an issue because the line doesn't vanish in a), b) and c) (2020-11-12)

Rosalie Fay: R: 1. 0-0 b2-b1=B 2. d2-d3 c3xb2. What did the bP capture? A wQ or wR doesn't leave White a previous move; a wP makes an illegal wP structure, so wB or wN.

bK got into the SW cage via a3. When bK was on a3, [wPb2] was on b3, and [wPa2] was on a2. So these wPs did not cross-capture. wQ cannot have been in the cage at the time, because, if it were, bK could not get in without walking into check from wQ. So when wQ entered the cage, bK was already in. wQ must have entered via a1 or b2. To avoid giving an unparriable check, wQ must've moved to a1 with bKc1 and a shield on b1.

But this shield doesn't have to be the piece captured on b2 by the promoting bP. Why not

Pièces rétro-volages
VL: Solution:
1.Rg2=wR Rb6=wR!! 2.Re8=bR! 0-0#! (2... Rf1#??)
2.Ra(c)8=wR??

Here only one w rook is volage since they both stand on light squares
of ODD ranks: any promotee had to visit a square of the opposite
colour at least once in order to arrive from the 8th rank! Similarly,
only one bl rook is volage (EVEN ranks). By the AP logic, we have a
right to justify the 1st W's move by subsequent castling, which shows
that it is Rh1 that is volage. Bl rooks play by the post factum
(subordination) logic: the first one turns out volage.

Cooked (feenschach, 126): 1.Ra2(Rc2,Rb3...)=wR Rh7+ 2.Kf8 Ra8#
Correction: Rh8- e8. (2002-04-05)
VL: Correction (H.130): Rh8 to d8 (rather than to the light square e8). (2021-02-12)
A.Buchanan: shifted sT to d8 as per request (2021-02-12)

A.Buchanan: So this was Niemann's own correction, I guess. When was FEENSCHACH renamed feenschach? (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: Henrik: "Jungle & Garden" is a new perspective in the fairy chess terminology classification campaign. It comes from a frustration I've had in writing glossary entries (not just in chess, but in my professional life) as to what I am trying to achieve with a definition. Is it ever "good enough", or can it be? It basically says that any term is either a *description* of an aspect of the chaotic real world ("Jungle") or it's a *definition* in our provisional model of that world ("Garden"). Words like "love", "game", "fairy", "tempo", "joke" are all Jungle words. The meaning is derived from consensus: like a ship's anchor cable is made up of many fibres, in Wittgenstein's famous image. On the other hand, we are trying to build (in our software & databases) formal models which can classify, solve and compose chess problems (Gardens). The terminology in any one can and must be exact, as it emerges bottom-up from formal mathematics, logical and informational structures. However these terms are only provisional, and different Gardens may have different interpretations. It is acknowledged that they are not the same as similar terms in the Jungle. They are our best shot so far. It is valid to list (in a civil way) perceived shortcomings between the Garden and the Jungle, which can be put in a backlog to be handled later. "Legality" is an excellent example of a Garden concept, which is why I am exploring it currently. Comments welcome. (2021-05-25)
A.Buchanan: A database crosses the divide: it must store accurate "photographs of the jungle". Any transformation of these compositions (e.g. rationalization of the stipulation) cannot over-write primary jungle data. I thought this composition did that, but I think it's Niemann's own correction published later. (2021-05-25)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for the explanation, Andrew (2021-05-25)
