In how many ways can you add a White Queen and a Black Queen to this diagram to obtain a legal position?

2021 solutions
A.Buchanan: beautiful! (2021-01-01)
Henrik Juel: Yes, beautiful simplicity; finally one I can handle...
There are 64-9-9 = 46 empty squares, so the queens can be added in 46x45 = 2070 ways
The only illegality is that both kings are in check, which happens in 7x7 = 49 ways
Answer: 2070-49 = 2021 (2021-01-01)
A.Buchanan: Oh the other two today aren't hard, Henrik. But this one is a real gift from the Gods (2021-01-01)

After I posted the meme https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1459595-queen-elizabeth-chess-moves in Chess Studies and Composition group in Facebook, I was asked to augment it with a composition. So I added three pieces, but kept the spatial relationship between Her Majesty and some (arch)bishop I don't recognize. However an earlier version https://knowyourmeme.com/photos/1459589-queen-elizabeth-chess-moves shows that someone j'adoubed the board! (It's probably treason to j'adoube the queen herself.)

Authors' solution: hey wait: so is there a dual? Well no. What was Black's last move? Let's look at all the captures & promotions first:
White: captured P promoted RRRRRBS
Black: captured QRRBBSS promoted -

bPs all on original columns: no black cross-captures. So 7 wPs captured once and promoted. The exception must have been poor wPh, because it can't get past bPh anyway, and was waylaid on its starting file by an officer. Other wPs captured as axb, bxc, cxd, dxc/e, exd, fxe, gxh before promoting.

The sequence of bP moves must have been one of:
(i) bPc6 (allows wPd to pass) then bPd5 (allows promoted rooks to escape) then bPe6 (when all the rooks are out, letting wPf to pass)
(ii) bPe6 then bPd5 then bPc6.

So which? In (i) the units promoting late on e8 & h8 must have been S & B, as the door was closed on escaping rooks. But e8 is a light square, and h8 is blocked by bPg7 which never moved. So neither could have promoted to B. Therefore it was option (ii), pawn move sequence roughly:
bPe6 & bPh6
gxh=R, fxe=R, dxe=R,
bPd5
exd=R, cxd=R
5 Rs all exit
bPc6
bxc=S
bPb6
axb=B

Bottom line: all the bP moves and captures were historical, and so it must be bK which just moved. We can now use Retractor 2 program from Theodore Hwa at http://xenon.stanford.edu/~hwatheod/retractor2/retractor.html to validate our manual analysis of the retro play, ignoring any suggestions which involve capture. So wRa had already moved: no castling now.
Henrik Juel: Black captured [Ph2] with an officer
The other white pawns captured all missing black men to promote seven times
Last move was not made by a black pawn as this would ruin the promotions, so it was Kc3-d3
Retroplay: 1... Kc3-d3 2.De4-b4+ Kb2-c3! 3.Lb4-a3+ Kb1-b2! 4.Ta3-a1+ or Ta2-a1+ (other K retractions just postpone the inevitable), so 1.0-0-0 is illegal
1.Dd2#
Good problem, maybe the best in the tourney (2021-06-08)
A.Buchanan: Thanks Henrik. Can you figure out which pawns promoted to which kind of officers on which squares? (2021-06-09)
Henrik Juel: No, I would expect there were several feasible promotion patterns
But the need to move [Pb7c7d7e7] very carefully can easily make your suggestion correct
Offhand I do not see the right sequence, so you are welcome to enlighten me (2021-06-10)
Henrik Juel: I think I got it
(promote [Pg2] to rook on h8 at some early time)
first e7-e6, promote [Pd2f2] to rooks on e8
then d7-d5, promote [Pc2e2] to rooks on d8
get all promoted rooks out
finally [Pb2] promotes to knight on c8 and [Pa2] to bishop on b8 (2021-06-10)
A.Buchanan: Exactly! If you try the other way round, there’s nowhere to promote B (2021-06-10)

Henrik Juel: The retroplay is R: 1... Kh1xLh2 2.Lg1xDTSh2+, not 2.Lg1-h2+?? leaving Black no previous move
The uncaptured bishop is [Ph2] promoted on b8 or d8 after six additional white captures, so [Pa7] must have promoted
White has only D and S left to be captured, so the black promotion was on a1, not b1, and White may not castle, because Ta1 has moved
Solution 1.Lg2 thr. 2.Th1#, not the illegal 1.0-0-0??
A delightful birthday greeting (2021-06-19)
Henrik Juel: I am trying to estimate your age, Andrew
You published your first problem in 'Mathematics at DEC' in 1991, at which time you could be around 30 years old; so your current age might be 60
In any case, happy birthday from me also, and thanks for your contributions to PDB (2021-06-19)
A.Buchanan: Thank you, Henrik, but I'm just one of the noisiest of the many servants of PDB. In Lion's problem, I particularly like the Home Circuit. He asks if there is a name for the theme where a promoted pawn is captured after homecoming? On other matters, see P1299465 :) (2021-06-19)
Henrik Juel: I think that we should just let that theme remain unnamed (here, [Ph2] promotes and returns to h2 as a bishop, which is captured) (2021-06-19)
A.Buchanan: I ask more to try to make a general pattern. There are plenty of keywords which indicate when something gets somewhere. Maybe the dramatic qualifier "fatal" can indicate the fate awaiting the piece when it gets there? So "fatal homecoming", "fatal pronkin", "fatal Donati" etc? :) (2021-06-19)
Walter Lindenthal: The solution is clear-cut. But the sequence of moves that leads to the final diagram position is characteristically influenced by the kind of b promotion. a1=bQ/bS allows a rather FREE selection of moves and finally bQ/bS/bR could occupy h2 for the R-final capture wBg1x?h2, bKh1xBh2. In contrast, a1=bR directs the sequence of moves rather tightly, and ONLY the promoted bR can occupy h2 for the R-final capture (analytic details see Facebook). (2021-06-21)

A.Buchanan: This problem by an Indonesian composer is the first to be labelled "CC+", indicating that one engine gave a complete solution for retro, and based on this another engine solved the forward problem. The role of the humble human was merely to transfer data from one to the other, and there is no conceptual issue with integrating the two engines, to allow hundreds of problems to be classified as CC+. (2021-08-04)
Henrik Juel: Interesting new label
Solution 1. hxg3ep Se2+ 2. Kf5 Kxg3 3. Kg6 h4 4. Kh5 Sf4#
Pe4 ensures the legitimacy of the ep capture by preventing Kg2-h3 as last move; it has no role in the forward play (2021-08-04)
Mario Richter: In the testing approach described some human thinking is still necessary: one has to detect that two engines are necessary ... :-) [Although it seems possible to automate this process]
Or one can use rawbats, which automatically checks if an ep-capturing key is legal, so in this case it gives the intended solution without further human Intervention ... (2021-08-05)

SP: This is a correction of:
L. Kist
239 Illustrirte Zeitung 17/ii/1849
Source: original publication (p. 112). “Von Herrn L. Kist in Brandshagen bei Stralsund.”
The original position solves by 1.Lf8 (zz) e5 2.Se8 Kb5 3.Lc5 Ka4/Kc4/Ka6 4.Lc6/Sd6/Sc7#, but is unsound.
The 1.Lf8 solution can be isolated by moving the key piece to d7 and the wK to g5 (to cut off Lg5/Lh4).
P1394780 has been further reflected, which, of course, is optional. It should be noted that 1.Lf8 was not Kist’s intention. (2022-02-09)

SBD: I would suggest that the other be removed; what troubles me is that I used the same scheme only a few months later and thought it was original, in fact, I thought I was doing something based on another Rex Solus. I often make the comment in our Facebook groups that composers need to rotate their positions to look for not only predecessors, but also different ideas that may arise, and I find myself making that very error! SBD: Yes, I re used a scheme that I thought was original. I made the appropriate note in my Facebook groups that I had done this as I think it is very important to own up to one's mistakes, and since I am trying to develop new composers there as well, I need to show them my own mistakes. Thanks to the eagle eye who found this. (2021-12-28)

Zick-Zack Läufer
SBD: I have to thank Jon Levitt of my Facebook group for encouraging me to find this one. I had developed a rather not so good #8 in which the bishop goes to a3 and captures on c5, and he thought the zick-zack would be better. In this one, the bishop going to a3 mates in 11, and with the same rook mate on e3, only white has captured the pawns and the bishop sits on h6 or g5 without the pinning aspect of the mate. The only issue I have is that it plays out a bit like a series mover, although the eight also had that fault.

My friend Mirko has come up with a heavier twelve move version that might be included here as it adds content, but especially if we can find the corresponding Indian we know is there. (2021-12-28)

Chess problem by AI program ChatGPT

Q: Can you give an example of a chess retrograde analysis problem?

A: A retrograde analysis problem in chess is a problem where the goal is to determine the sequence of moves that led to a given position. For example:

White to move and mate in 2
[FEN "8/8/1p6/1P6/3k4/8/8/K7 w - - 0 1"]

In this problem, the goal is to determine the two moves (one for white and one for black) that led to the position shown. The solution is 1. bxa3+ Kd4 2. Kb2#
Henrik Juel: I do not understand this at all
It seems that ChatGPT is worthless for retro problems (2023-01-29)
A.Buchanan: Generally ChatGPT is amazing. We have entered a new age. Interacting with it reminds me of the first time I sent emails, or used a browser: we have crossed a frontier into engage with a function that will soon be commonplace. I already use it as a work tool for the last week. However it has limited skills and I was surprised it even attempted to construct a chess problem. It’s failure is humorous and kind of dreamlike (2023-01-30)
Henrik Juel: Thanks for your clarification, Andrew
ChatGPT is so amazing that it will give you a grade of B on some university exams; using it is obviously cheating, but do you enforce it?
In my youth calculators were developing fast; initially I banned the use of calculators in my OR exam, but the students were unhappy about it, saying that they were allowed in high school; I was forced to allow calculators, but then the poor students pointed out that the rich students had an unfair advantage; I then bought a few hundred cheap calculators and let the students borrow one for the exam (the rich students were still mad, but had to accept their lot in the social-democratic society of Danmark) (2023-01-30)

Mu-Tsun Tsai: This composition independently attempts a theme pioneered by G. Josten in P1409840: White makes a threat, Black counters the threat by capturing a piece with various piece types, and finally White mates by moving a piece of the same type as Black just did. This one achieves 5 different types, and I really wonder if 6 is possible. (2023-05-25)

White missing LB, Black missing TTL. Bearing in mind bishop tints, sBb6xLa5, sBh7xXg6. wBb2xTc3, wBa2xb3 & finally wBfxg or wBfxe=X. So the count is known, even if some details are unclear. sSh8 means no sT exited along that file. An sT did exit the Black camp to release wLc1 which was captured on a5. Therefore sBc5 (& sBb6, to unblock c8) were established there "a long time ago" and the last move was R: 1. a5-a4. This means that a pawn cage of b6, c5, b2, d2 was in existence prior to wBb2xc3, so sLf8 must have been on the inside of the cage prior to sBb2xTc3. However wLc1 must now pass sL in order to reach a5. This requires a bishop to have occupied a1, hence wTa1 shifted to lose queenside castling right.
Henrik Juel: 1.Dh3 Kxh1 2.Kf2#
White lost his long castling right, when [Ta1] moved to make room for a bishop, so that [Lc1] could reach a5 (2023-07-08)
