The first four moves by black Bishop a8 allows his transformation in black Rook in h8 achieving the four corners theme.
Then castle is possible (Einstein effect) & the Rook transforms in Bishop. After many other captures of white pawns a1 & a3 will be necessary to get the good configuration in f6-g7 (PWC effect) allowing the mate by a pawn. (Author)

It is a fine demonstration of the potential of the fairy condition Disparate. In the solution, a white promotion (into piece X) occurs on square c8 before any move of [Qd8] or [Ke8]. The following move Qd7 proves that X is not a rook (it can still be a queen because of the fairy condition!). The immediately following move Ke7 proves that X is not a knight. Then Ke6 is played, followed by a move by Qd7 which proves that X is not a bishop.
X thus can only be a queen! (We still have to show that the position is legal.) Only after completion of the proof, the promoted queen is captured. It is admirable that the author managed to compose a move sequence obeying all mentioned constraints concerning the move order. A rich demonstration of the fairy condition, exciting to solve.
Henrik Juel: Definition of Disparate from Julia's Fairies:
If one side makes a move with a piece of type “x” (black, white, neutral, half-neutral, etc., King included), the other side cannot answer immediately by moving a piece of the same type “x”.). A pawn promoting is a pawn move.
To me, it is not clear from the definition that 9.c8 is undetermined, and only later is inferred to be 9.c8=Q
Why can White not decide to promote to queen? (2017-03-18)
Henrik Juel: I misunderstood your text, Vlaicu
Now I see that White indeed decides to promote to queen, and your argument shows why the other promotion choices do not work in this proof game (2017-03-18)
Henrik Juel: ... even though the promoted man never moves (2017-03-18)
paul: Jacobi checked the last 12 moves and gave unique solution.

Either the current position is a starting position, or White has just played 0. ... b1-b2, from a position with an impossible check which must therefore have been the starting position itself. In either case, none of the Black pawns have ever moved, and so are eligible to make a double move. wPc1 has also never moved. But what of wPb2? We are up in the air as to whether b2-b4 is legal.

Since we can never prove that a position is not a starting position, the default convention is that it is *not* the starting position. Therefore, White has just begun the game with Black in check, and played 0. ... b1-b2, so is not able to play b2-b4 later.

Eventually, when Chess960 becomes played out, we will all be playing Chess4E71, so best to learn it now. There are three diagonals wPb2 may move along, but only one of them works. Rigorous retro reasoning allows all the pawns to make a double move *except* for wPb2. (Author)

play all play one stop play next play all
Author's solution: Schema problem to show the idea. At first glance, h=3 seems completely impossible, even without the confusing fact that Black to move is apparently checking White. But this absurdity is what renders the problem solvable.

Law A1.2 tells us that if the player to move is already apparently checking or even checkmating the opposing king, then he is not allowed to capture that king, and must make another move. The assessment whether the opponent is actually checked or mated is made only when the opponent has the move. In normal chess, such a position is illegal, but it is no more and no less illegal than say wBa1 wPb2. Law A1.2, tells us that we can still play chess. (See Lese Majeste)

In Chess4E71 such "illegal" checks can clearly occur, but only in the starting position. Therefore no moves have been made in the game so far. In particular, bPh3 has never moved. Now Article 3.7b of the Laws of Chess says: "on its first move the pawn [...] may advance two squares along the same file, provided that both squares are unoccupied. So 1. h3-h1! is legal.

Now what happens to the pawn when it arrives on h1? Again we consult the Laws. Article 3.7e says: "When a player, having the move, plays a pawn to the rank furthest from its starting position, he must exchange that pawn as part of the same move for a new queen, rook, bishop or knight of the same colour on the intended square of arrival." The pawn began on the 3rd rank, so it would only promote when it reaches the furthest rank, namely the 8th rank (which it never can attain, under orthodox rules, but that's irrelevant). When it arrives on the 1st rank, it merely remains a pawn. I can almost hear the groans :-)

The rest of the problem solves itself. Or an engine does.

The recognition that BTM is delivering check in what must be the starting position is hardly retro reasoning, so the Article 17A bell does not sound to awake the demon of the Dead Position rule from his slumbers. Hence with a forward stipulation, we don't worry that there is no mate possible after B1 move.

A.Buchanan: Hark, what’s that I hear? :-) (2020-08-31)

A.Buchanan: I have changed the stipulation, and that seems to have fixed things (2021-10-21)
A.Buchanan: While this is ingenious, in the diagram position, Black is in the losing chess equivalent of check, implying that White's last move can only be Ke2-e1 or Se2-g1. This spoils the logic. Is it possible to find a 7th move for Black which escapes the check? (2021-10-21)
Henrik Juel: Thanks, Andrew
Surprising that changing Beweispartie to BP fixes the animation (2021-10-21)
A.Buchanan: And changing it back again to Beweispartie, it still works. Maybe there was an old version of the generated code which drives the animation based on the solution, and that needed to be refreshed? All very odd. (2021-10-21)

In this problem 10.h8=K makes both white kings non-royal, so 11.f4 is not an illegal self-check
The black king is royal throughout, so 5.exf8=KDTLS? would have given a disturbing check to him, leaving just 5.e8=B

As far as I know, this is the first example of a reflex proof game - if true it is therefore a new genre. Note that the condition Black reflex # might be generalized to White reflex and to Reflex when we sum up the 2 possibilities. It might also be generalized to almost any kind of goals (one for the black side and one for the white side, which could be different).

Remark that 8.f3 can’t be played instead of 8.Rh2 because of the reflex 8…Bg3#. The move 10.f3 shows that the promoted piece on square b8 is a Bishop or a Queen, as the above diagonal checkmate possibility must be avoided. After 16.Ka6 there is a new orthogonal checkmate possibility 16…Qb6# if the promoted piece on square b8 is a Bishop. As this reflex checkmate is not played but replaced by the capture of the promotion, this latter is necessarily a Queen, and hence a Schnoebelen one as it didn’t move before its capture.
Henrik Juel: Neat way of featuring a Schnoebelen queen, which needs some condition
I also do not recall a reflex condition in a proof game, but I have seen it in other retros (2022-03-02)
Henrik Juel: The problem should be marked C+, as the author has tested it with a new version of Jacobi (2022-03-03)
A.Buchanan: I discussed this kind of stipulation when I met Nicolas in his hometown of Lille around this time. Basically he sees reflex as a stepping stone to including optimal play in retros. It might first be r_1 (so the players spot all immediate mates) but can scale up to r_2 (the players spot all mates in 2). In the limit as n goes to infinity in r_n players always play perfectly! (2022-03-03)
A.Buchanan: I have added a new keyword reflex as a fairy condition, and populated it against all problems which had stipulation . This ought to apply to r# problems too, but it's too tedious to add until I get the Beautiful Soup spider running again automatically, if I ever do.

Question: are r# problems considered to in the fairy genre? (2022-03-03)
Henrik Juel: Yes, they are fairy, because they are s# with an added condition (2022-03-03)
A.Buchanan: In PDB currently, less than 20 of the 2200+ r# have the second genre "fairies" (2022-03-04)
James Malcom: That is probably because it is extremely hard to select multiple genres on a PC, unlike mobile where they are checkboxes. I believe the system should utilize check boxes for all screen mods. Heck, I don't even know how to do it on a PC. (2022-03-04)
A.Buchanan: I think you hold Ctrl button when clicking. So it's like when selecting items in a folder in File Explorer. (2022-03-05)

PR: "Reciprocal change in Meredith form, using an Anti-Mars specific mechanism. In the try, the wR and wQ do not observe a6 and d7, but they can move to these squares via their home squares, after the bS unguards these squares. Dual avoidance is achieved by the bS blocking each square. After the key, the wQ and wR cannot move to a6 and d7 through their home squares, but they observe a6 and d7 directly and so can capture on them after the bS arrives there. The try and key also utilise the fairy condition and show a reversal of white 1st move and threat. The bS defences also utilise the condition to move to a6 and d7 to prevent the threats via g8-f6."
Henrik Juel: The condition is not yet in the PDB, but here is the Schwalbe lexikon definition
