Teppo Mänttä: The diagram position is clearly misprinted. Cooked for example by 1.Lxb4#. "Computer test FIDE Albums" (1993) suggests: add black Pawns a5 and b3, then the solution works perfectly. The problem is misprinted in FIDE-Album, but Meson and yacpdb have added the Pawns a5 and b3. (2021-07-28)
Jan Hein Verduin: The reprint in "Jaarboek 1954 van de Nederlandse Bond van probleemvrienden" also has black pawns on a5 and b3. (2021-07-31)

A.Buchanan: PDB gives us very little flexibility for describing the quality of problems. I suppose we should record duals in the "Cook" field for now. Everyone would agree that the trial is a defect. But duals are not cooks, and even if we accept that "Cooked" is PDB-speak for "Unsound" for now, it would go against the view of many problemists to mark this celebrated problem as unsound. It would also violate Codex Section III https://www.wfcc.ch/1999-2012/codex/#c3. (2021-11-07)

Korrekte Version: Lb5>f1 & Sg6>e5 (Gustav 4.1c C+)
SBD: Cooked, 1. Bxc6+ also leads to a position in which hxg2/Bxg2 mate will be forced, dualized.
Best solution seems to be Bb5-f1, Sg6-e5. Then 1. Sg6! is the key. Not tested with a brute force mode, though.
An excellent problem that deserves to be rescued. (2009-04-11)

Laut AZW: "Erster und zweiter Preis geteilt im Problemturnier der Schachgesellschaft in Trollhättan 1925", laut YACPDB (id=268768) 1924.
SP: (1) The "C+" is an error. There is a dual 2.d3 in the thematic variation
1. ... c3.
(2) The dual was noticed in time and the problem disqualified (e.g.
RdSah xii/1925, p. 171). So 1st Pr went to Rduch alone, 2nd Pr Havel,
etc. Palkoska gives a correction in his 1928 collection making no
mention of a prize.
(3) Closing date 1/i/1925 (entries) and 1/iv/1925 (corrections). So
1925 is correct, though contemporary sources often give 1924-25. (2024-02-20)

msterkowiec: The whole idea can be "saved" for example in the following position: 1nn5/2qp4/2PPP3/RB1kp1pK/2pPN1Q1/2Rr2p1/1PN1P3/1N3bb1 (by adding bl.Bf1, wh.Nb1, wh.p.e2 and moving bl.R from d1 to d3), however it involves three white knights (promoted material on board). The question is whether a better fix can be found. (2024-02-04)

A.Buchanan: Here the threat play (1) is sound & (2) can never occur as Black has no neutral move. But if threat play is *unsound* yet can never occur, can it be safely ignored or will some directmate purists regard that as a defect? (2022-04-02)
