James Malcom: This may very well be impossible to C+ with Gustav, but there is an alternative for manual/partial testing by using chess.com's free analysis. When you enter in the position, it completely agrees with the first full 14 moves. It ponders on 15. between which pawn to queen. If you manually enter 15. d8=Q, then the following engine evaluation generally agrees with the solution, and eventually is will find the mate on some point. (2020-11-06)
A.Buchanan: It’s not a matter of style whether you have space after comma in the solution. It’s incorrect syntax for the editor (2020-11-06)
edderiofer: According to this Reddit thread, there is a refutation 1...Qb6 : https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/zslnov/this_2018_awardwinning_study_is_wrong_can_you/

I can confirm that Lichess' analysis agrees; after 1.Qa8 Qb6 Lichess eventually returns a mate for Black for every white move but 2.d8=Q, and after 2...Qb3 (any) Black has mate in twelve. (2022-12-23)

Olaf Jenkner: Gustav confirms that black can mate in 14 moves. (2022-12-23)
James Malcom: I emailed Popov about this, and he suggested Rd5-c5. How does this correction fare? (2023-01-07)
Olaf Jenkner: Now white can mate in 14 moves. There are 3 full length variations:

On this site - https://streathambrixtonchess.blogspot.com/2007/01/london-transport-chess-puzzle-ii_13.html?m=1- there is a small note that compares the work of the London Underground in "rush hour" with the solution in G. Popov's eight-move.

London Transport Chess Puzzle II

Five O'Clock inLondon, and a crammed crush-hour underground on the tube. The doors at each station open, the mass shift a touch sideways, each in tiny steps; and - yet another sardine leaps in. Curses under breath, shuffles almost kicks, dagger-stares, and sweat. The heat, the constriction of space. The needless pressure of time, the will to be some place. so what? Well - I was reminded of that inevitable squish by this chess puzzle, for fairly obvious reasons. It's composed by Grigory Popov, and white is to play and mate in eight. It was agony going through it. . . but later, I saw the funny side.
# posted by Tom Chivers

Indeed, the first steps of the solution resemble the behavior of passengers in crowded transport - . Passengers pack in and another " sardine " jumps into the car. The author of the problem invited Valentin Viktorovich Leader to give his version of events, covering all 8 moves of the solution . And here is his new novella-

Parliamentary passion

(diagram)

The Queen (Fd1) has long resented the presence within the walls of parliament of Mr. Krashodin (Krh1), who is steeped in corruption and linked to organized crime. At the request to deprive him of parliamentary immunity (black bishop g1), the queen was demanded a concession: to introduce into the government for the post of prime minister (field e1) a protege of parliament, the young and ambitious Mr. C * (Ch4). The Queen agreed, but C * linked his future appointment with giving him the opportunity to carry out reshuffles in the cabinet, relating, in particular, to the heads of such ministries as the ministries of finance (field b 1), defense (c1) and culture (done). After long four-day consultations, the Minister of Finance (Lb1) was dismissed in the field of his usual activities - Chairman of the Board of the Bank (1.La1!), Kr.s1, who once headed the cabinet, received the portfolio of the Minister of Finance (2.Kr. b 1), the queen, who felt in her place in the ministry of culture, became the minister of defense (!) (3.Fs1), and the prime minister became the minister of culture (4.Ld1). Meanwhile, members of the opposition parties in parliament (pp. b 5, d 5, f6) took a number of steps aimed at disrupting the consultations, but at the end of the fourth day of negotiations they were blocked. In order not to create a stalemate, on the morning of the fifth day C* was appointed prime minister (5.Ce1); on the same day Mr. Krashodin's parliamentary immunity was terminated (5…?f2 6.?:f2+). Attempts by some oppositionists to save the latter, however, costing the resignation of the Minister of Culture, failed, and the queen, with the support of the new prime minister, issued a decree on the arrest of Mr. Krashodin (6 ... g1 7.L:g1 + hg 8.F:g1x). Cleanly done!
