Reto: This is now the new record for the longest computer tested SPG. Strategy seeking takes up all the time, playing the 800 strategies on the other hand is done within a few seconds. (2023-08-11)
Reto: With the upcoming v1.6, this is solved by Stelvio in around 20min. The improvement is due to the fact that the cage in the south-west is now detected (either the wRa1 is captured inside the cage or the wBc1 is captured at home) (2023-09-02)

TRD: "The point here is that every move of the game is strictly forced in order and kind, the longest such game existant at present. I expect this task to go much further."
Original stipulation was: "White here mated in two and noticed on examining his score that the mate was administered on his 17th move. What was the game?"
A.Buchanan: This is the earliest unique PG recorded in PDB, but Dawson implies earlier, shorter ones exist. Can any of these be traced? (2021-01-22)

Yoav Ben-Zvi: The cook found in P0002554 re-opens the question of the current length record for unique capture-free SPG. A search in PDB finds this problem, assuming it is sound, to be the record holder, until Unto Heinonen publishes a correction (expected very soon). Prior to publication of this problem the record was 38.5, in Michel Caillaud's P0002187. (2019-07-10)

Henrik Juel: Following R: 76.h3xLg4, the resolution could continue with
Retract wKc8 to b5, sLg4 to c8, b7-b6, sSa8 to g8, wSa4 to g1, wKb5 to e1, sLb8 to a5, b6xTc5, wTc5 to d4, sKa1 to b5, a2xTb3xDc4+, etc. (2020-08-13)
Henrik Juel: A little analysis may be in order
Pawns captured all missing men
Kb3 is now confined to the SW corner, but if we retract b3xc4 he is locked in for good, so [Lc8] was captured on g4
Before we retract h3xLg4, sLg4 to c8, and b7-b6, wKf8 must be liberated
The plan for this is: Retract wKg8-f8, sTg1 to f8, sTe7 out, wTf8 out past the sT, wKg8 to e7, sT to h8, wT to e8, and further as per my old comment (2022-01-22)

Vaclav Kotesovec: After more than 513 hours, Gustav 4.2c was able to test this problem! (2023-04-09)
Vaclav Kotesovec: As a composer, I would have preferred to place the white king on h5 (and ser-!=112) with multiple switchbacks, but I understand that the authors were probably more concerned with the length record. (2023-04-09)
James Malcom: That is quite the dedication to computer testing! (2023-04-10)
Vaclav Kotesovec: This problem was one of a number of problems I chose to test the new version 4.2c of Gustav by Olaf Jenkner. I always test several problems in parallel, so even though the testing times may seem long (and in the case of this problem it was rather an exception), on average it takes no more than a week to test one such problem, so I get some results almost every day. The most time-consuming problems are, of course, correct ones, and cooked ones are usually discovered much faster. I consider the fact that this problem has been completely tested as another step on the very limit of the possibilities of current computer technology. (2023-04-10)

correction of P1298046
Henrik Juel: 21 consecutive checks; unfortunately, the position is illegal.
White never captured, while black pawns captured six times by axbxcxd, b7xc6, c7xd6, and h7xg6; but [Pf2] could not have been captured.
Nowadays it is rare to see an illegal prize winner, so the diagram may be incorrect (Pg2?) (2015-02-25)
Henrik Juel: Now I see that Jacques, in his comment to P1298046, gave this position, so my last sentence does not apply (2015-02-25)
Henrik Juel: The illegality is even 'worse' than I first thought, because [Pe2] could not have been captured either (2015-02-27)
James Malcom: I think it would be nice to have a legal version of this record. To do this, I propose we shorten the solution until a legal position is reached.

A #9 with 33B2N1/qrrp1ppn/1Ppp1np1/2QN2k1/3PKR2/8/b2p2P1/8 seems legal, no? (2021-02-06)

Valery Liskovets writes: A misattribution appeared already in the original publication of P1300392 in 2009: it ought to be attributed more properly as "D.Baibikow after V.Liskovets and Ju.Wojnow."
Not merely it is stipulated distinctly and with a slightly changed position but my/our intention was very different: under-promotions both in the solution and the retro-play. In the PDB description, a direct reference to our initial P0008499 with almost the same position and solution but non-rigorous last move) should also be added.

Joost de Heer: This is probably Kriegspiel? If there are no black pieces, the knight path on moves 25/26 can go over f6 as well. (2022-10-25)
A.Buchanan: Good catch, Joost. The black units (because of bK) are necessary. I haven’t heard the term Kriegspiel used to describe this. (2022-10-25)
Henrik Juel: This is a series proof game (where only White moves, and he may not check with an intermediate move)
I see no relation to the fairy condition Kriegspiel (2022-10-25)

A.Buchanan: This problem and its antecedant are NOT cooked. They are non-unique proof games, and there is no intention of uniqueness. Whilst it's useful to identify a shortest solution, it is disrespectful and confusing to wave around the terms "C-" & "cooked". When we have verified that this problem has no solution in 18.0 or 18.5 moves, we can mark it as C+. (2023-09-02)
Olaf Jenkner: That's quiet confusing. See P0000404 with stipulation "BP in 45,0". The keyword is "Unique Proof Game".
This problem has the stipulation "BP in 19.5". The keyword is "Non-Unique Proof Game".
I don't believe that the dot makes the difference. (2023-09-03)
Henrik Juel: One way of limiting the confusion is to change the stipulation to
Length of shortest proof game?
C+ then means that this length is indeed 19.5 moves (2023-09-03)
A.Buchanan: A root problem is that animation engine reads the stipulation to decide what to do. (AND the details are undocumented.) So if we change the stipulation to something correct, we will lose the animation. Also, there is no Originalforderung field to keep track of the composer's intent. The comma dot is another linguistic challenge which could be addressed if we had multi-language support for stips like we do for source, composer, keyword & fairy piece. Obviously I'm very grateful for Gerd's work, but he has given no indication when, if ever, he will restart serious development work on PDB, so in the meantime we need to muddle through. In the meantime, the best we could do is rework the stipulation to add "(non-unique)" or "how many solutions?" etc. This edit can be done by screen-scraping in an automated way, if we can agree the principle (2023-09-03)

The unassuming Rex Solus position hides a real treasure - a spectacular retro play, containing a length record and largest number (11) of uncaptures in Anti-Circe Proca retractors. (judge Ivan Denkovski)
