Henrik Juel: The only possible last move is b2-b4, so the ep key is permissible
C+ Popeye 4.61 (2021-07-26)
A.Buchanan: The main idea is to unblock the cluttered 4th rank, and this is complemented thematically by *blocking* four other lines: g8-g4, h8-h4, h8-d4 & "blocking the blocker" h6-f4.
The last move was b2-b4, so by the ep rule, capture is definitely legal. The convention only serves to resolve ambiguous situations where multiple possible histories exist. In retro problems, such ambiguity is rare if the retro logic does its job. However the pessimistic nature of the e.p. convention motivates *why* the retro play must exist. (2021-07-26)

P1007491 hingegen "Loss of tempo"? (2018-10-21)
Henrik Juel: Good point, Mario
Other things in the never-ending Keyword discussion include:
Tempoverlustmanöver is currently called the same in english and french, and has no definitions
Loss of tempo (Tempoverlust in german) is defined as
'With White to play, a sequence of moves to reach the same position with Black to play. (Help game, abbr .: TV)'
which makes little sense in proof games
In this problem [Pe2] goes e2-e3-e4 ('wasting' a move)

A.C.White: "LOYD lived up to his profession that others were welcome to reproduce and improve his themes better than some writers are wont to do.
There are dozens of instances on record where his problems closely anticipate later work by other composers, but I have seldom found that he made any objection thereto. On the whole I think he had a certain feeling of pride that others should follow in his footsteps twenty or fifty years after him. More than once I have shown him versions by distinguished modern composers, and he would laugh and say: " Has So-and-so really just published that ? Why, I made it when I was eighteen." It is impossible to refer to all these cases in such a book as this. No. 273 is a single striking instance among many, which I discussed at some length in the British Chess Magazine for February, 1910."

A.C. White: "He [Loyd] cared little for the means he used, so long as his results were successful. And, strangely enough, it almost seems as though his results were increasingly successful and all the more artistic when he took the most radical liberties with the conventional theories of composition. ... It is certainly not considered good form to reply to a check by Black with a direct capture. To do so is recognised as crude, obvious and unscientific. But Loyd's genius thought little of theory, giving all its attention to practice. And his results justified his independence. These problems are among his very best. The key of No. 581 is one of the most puzzling in all two-move composition, subtle, artistic and scientific in the highest measure; and the mates blend with it most beautifully."

Dort heißt es: "In justice to Mr. Rowland it must be noted that he undoubtedly can claim priority of publication over Herr Stahl. The Jamaica Gleaner assumed the contrary—in a recent article—upon the strength of a reprint of Mr. Rowland's version by Professor Brownson, but we have personally seen the Dublin Evening Mail of March 4th, and can vouch for the previous appearance of the position there and then.
It is somewhat curious that two of these, no doubt unconscious, reproductions should have occurred to problems crowned or highly commended in the self-same tourney. The Rowland—Stahl case is not quite so startling as the others, although the resemblance is striking enough and, if known in time, might probably have affected the award. ... the slight deviation on move one in these bi-move problems would rather tend to confirm the notion of deliberate piracy, were they the work of authors unknown to fame. We of course entertain no such suspicion and although the name of K. Stahl is almost unknown to us, yet we plainly see the probability that this composer's work was at Buffalo prior to March 4th, as also the utter unlikelihood he could have seen the Dublin Evening Mail of that date. The foregoing expose will undoubtedly not be without its utility, if composers will read aright the two-fold lesson it conveys. Viz :—First. Do not continue to harp upon old themes in a thin disguise. Let "the Bristol" rest in peace, and disturb no more the bones of "the poor Indian" or such used up subjects as the six move flight square two-mover. Second. Only false prophets tell you the future of the problem art points to positions with few pieces and scant variety. On the contrary, that way lies piracy and consequent mortification of spirit!"

1.Preis The Wanderer (Milwaukee) 1886; Einsendungsmotto: "Tit for Tat"

[BCM, 1886, S.70]: "The monthly column is an important feature in a new Illustrated Magazine entitled "The Wanderer," published at Milwaukee, price $1 a year, and devoted to the interests of the travelling public. The Chess contents are so thoroughly good in every way that we recommend our readers to write for a copy ..."

[ACM]: "A marked specialty of his work, which will serve as a faithful index of his style, is his constant predilection to elaborate the powers and functions of the pawn. This peculiarity, conjoined with an active use of the white king, can be traced through many of his finest problems. We will venture to illustrate with a few examples, commencing with the first prize winner of the Wanderer tourney, Milwaukee, 1887."

Two of the judges noted the similarity with Loyd's problem:
Carpenter considered it was legitimate, and gave it 1 pr, Elson
considered it based on Loyd's problem, and not entitled to any
